The store does not mess around with their saftey precautions, they take extra measures to make sure their staff and customers feel safe & comfortable while shopping. They have a sanitation station where they steam the clothes you try on to kill any potential bacteria or germs ( yuck ). Staff was cleaning dressing rooms, and wiping down counters. The staff is extremely friendly and very knowledgeable about the products they carry and if they didn't have an answer they would research to find it. What in the world is going on with this store? Zero merchandising. Everything is racked like it was a rummage sale. Nothing is organized by brand or size. There were no less than 3 employees chit-chatting at the counter this weekend indicating there is plenty of time to organize. Been going for years and well, huge disappointment to see the state of the place. read more

I purchased online, so this is not a review of their actual store in Lake Geneva, but rather of their web store. I ordered a Kelty Light Year 40 Degree Down sleeping bag online on the Thursday at about 2pm, and it arrived here in San Francisco on Saturday morning! And this was using their "Free Standard Shipping." Awesome. As I am in CA and CWO is in WI, I paid no tax, so all I paid was the exact price for the sleeping bag. When the package arrived, it came with a nice handwritten note on the invoice! (I'll upload a pic.) That's something you'll never see from a huge outfitter. While I won't be making the 2,000+ drive out to their store anytime soon, I'll definitely be back to make another order online. Highly recommended!! read more

There are a handful of paddle companies in the area, so which is cheaper? They are all the same. Trust me I checked. $40 for a minimum of 2 hours rental. So why did I choose Clear Water Outdoor over the others? Because I love technology and the ease of online booking. Gone are the days of actually having to talk to someone! Verbal communication, such a daunting task! Their website is easy to navigate. You pick a day, how many boards you want to rent, pick a time slot and pay. Done and done. When we arrived to the storefront the rental process was pretty seamless. They took my drivers license and walked me over the the park across the lake where 2 boards were ready to go. It is a 5 minute walk from the store to the park BTW. Oh and they have a safe place to store your belongings in the store because there is no where to put it on the beach. read more

We have a family summer home in Lake Geneva, and when we are here, clear water is always one of our stops. The staff is friendly and never pushy, the merchandise is awesome, there is literally nothing in here that I wouldn't want to own. Recently I was trying to buy a pair of boots for my son & daughter. They didn't have my daughter's size so they offer to ship them to me. when I got them, they fit perfectly but no room to grow so I took them back. Needless to say it took me a month and a half to get them back. By then I had purchased another pair somewhere else so I was a bit nervous they would have a problem returning them. There was NO problem at all, they were happy to take them back for me and even remembered sending to them to me in the first place. This place is awesome. They want to please and they do. read more

Whenever we make our way up to Lake Geneva we always make sure to stop by Clear Water. I'm a big fan of outdoorsy clothes, boots, etc and they have what I'd call a less than common group of clothing/shoe lines that you won't find at most other stores. Prices are a tad higher but that's okay..the people who work here are always knowledgeable and friendly. We stopped in today after a brisk look at the snow sculptures along the lake. In need of a new pair of athletic shoes I happened to take a look at their rack and noticed a pair I really liked. Since they only have 5-6 different men's athletic shoes and I'm very picky about what I pick out, it seemed to me that I should sit down and give them a try. Five minutes later I was at the checkout counter. This seems to happen every time we stop in. They don't carry hoards of clothes here but what they do have is pretty damn cool. Cheers! read more

Clearwater is my go to for any outdoor item I need regardless of whether I can get it cheaper on Amazon. Why? Because you cannot beat the friendly staff that will go the the ends of the earth to make sure you get what you need and secondly, I am able to go try on and "play" with everything before I get it. It is a huge help to know that I am buying quality items and that I am buying the right tool or the right item for what I am planning even if I am just looking to buy a new day bag as my everyday purse. One thing that I find keeps me coming back and I think is a sign of excellent customer service is when they don't carry a specific product that will fit me, instead of telling me it doesn't exist or that I shouldn't be doing it, they suggest to me the brands and locations that I can shop for it. While this seems counter productive for a small business, it is not to me. I still come to Clearwater as a loyal customer for any little item knowing that they have my best interest at heart. Huge selection of hard to find day bags and accessories is why I keep coming back, but they are outfitters for hiking, camping, kayaking, climbing.... If it is done outdoors they will hook you up and make you look good doing it (oh, and looking good is because everything that is comfortable and practical also happens to look super stylish and awesome!) read more

I appreciate that the business has a commitment to sustainable brands and fashion. During the summer, they offer kayak and paddleboard rentals. The staff at the boating department is very friendly and they make sure that you are well informed about all of the rules of the lake before they send you out. read more

I had been looking for fashionable flannel-lined jeans in my size (very small) for quite some time, and found some in the Prana Holiday Season catalog. I called Prana...but they were sold out. Most other third-party retailers were also sold out in my size. Finally, I found my size on Altrec.com, ordered them, and received an email the following day that said it was a mistake and Altrec did not actually have them in stock. I finally found another pair at Clear Water Outdoor, same price as Prana advertised, and they shipped for free, and got to me on the West Coast in two days. Overall, excellent customer service and processing speed, as well as excellent selection. I know they don't stock everything, so who ever decided to stock these pants - awesome choice! read more

I found them with a quick Google search, but was incredibly happy to see that they were a local brick-and-mortar store, and not just another internet warehouse. The shipping was super fast, more important was the personal touch. One of the meal bars I ordered was not in stock, so I received a friendly email from a real person offering great alternatives: replace it with a different bar or just remove it from the order and they'd still honor the free shipping even though the order would then be below the free shipping price. I had a bizarre and unpleasant experience at this store on 10/16/10 when I tried to buy a pair of Vibram Five Fingers Bikila along with my girlfriend. After spending about 20 minutes with two female salespeople who extolled the virtues of the Five Finger running method, my girlfriend and I both decided to buy the pairs we tried on. At this point, something strange happened. Seconds after I removed the Five Fingers, a separate male salesperson (who had not been helping us) surreptitiously swooped in, grabbed the pair I tried on and disappeared. My girlfriend and I were confused, but assumed that the salesman was taking them to the counter for us to purchase. After putting my original shoes back on, I noticed a huddle between the two female salespeople who were helping us and the male salesperson who grabbed the Vibrams from me. A few minutes later, the male salesperson told me that he could not sell me the Five Fingers because some one had purchased them on the internet a couple minutes before I removed them from my feet. I was then informed the store did not have another pair in my size. The salespeople then went into overdrive trying to sell me a different pair and trying to ensure my girlfriend still wanted to buy the pair she had tried on. We left the store without buying anything. I can understand how the circumstances presented a difficult scenario for the sales staff, but I think they handled it poorly. They acted sketchy in grabbing the shoes from me without explanation. I also think in-store purchases should trump online purchases. Finally, they were shameless in trying to convince me to buy a different model in my size that happened to be in-stock. read more

The only reason I gave them 5 stars was because six weren't available. You really don't know how good a business is until you have a problem with something you bought. Last October I bought my wife a pair of winter boots for snowshoeing. Well we finally got snow, and after using them a few times she found out they were cutting into the back of her leg. After all this time they took them back cheerfully and refunded us. Our satisfaction was their priority . . . Tell you what, we will definitely return. I love this store - so many new active/casual wear brands that you won't find at chain stores - my new found favorite at Clearwater is Lole - I have a great, stylish new winter coat, waterproof, washable, warm and really cute! Also discovered Haiku bags and Rogue shoes here - they have a great lower level "bargain basement" and if you have ever wanted to learn to Kayak, the store manager is an expert and leads many kayaking excursions, including a girls only trip that looks like a lot of fun. It is hard to make it out of Clearwater without a purchase...Sara, the owner is very helpful and active in the community - I really appreciate a small business that really trys hard and provides great products - I really love shopping here! read more
