Management has not been doing good. I reported that there was a barrel of explosives chemicals that was recently removed.

The administration is a hodgepodge mismatch of willful ignorance and indifference. Mutuals are run by octogenarians who don't know yet know what the internet is for. The golf course occupies the entirety of the open space and is off limits to all. There are no mutual gardens, no basketball courts, no picnic areas, no athletic fields and no dog run. It is mired in the past and doggedly refuses to consider change. It is a poorly constructed bargain to satisfy the dufferdom whilest the needs of the ageing population are neglected.

I have had to go to shovel the snow in fear because it is so dangerous for my mother and other elderly people to try to walk, ice below the snow because of their careless way of maintenance. There have been robberies which they do not take responsibility for; this is a (supposedly) guarded entrance so how are people getting robbed, by the people they hire. Our mother was a resident at Brookdale at Monroe for 17 months. We had high hopes that this move…read morefrom independent living would continue to foster our mother's sense of dignity and self-worth. Unfortunately, our experience didn't match our expectations. The facility was clean, pleasant, and the activities and food were without complaint. Our biggest and most consistent issue was how our mother was treated by the staff and the lack of appropriate action taken by administration to address these concerns. Our issue was solely with the administration and how they handled the complaints we made on behalf of our mother and her treatment by the aides. A slight stroke left out mother with limited mobility which necessitated a move to assisted living. Being confined to a wheelchair meant that our mother was completely reliant on the aides to for every physical move; ie in and out of her recliner, wheelchair, toilet, commode etc. The only thing our mother could do was brush her teeth and feed herself. Dressing, toileting and even just reaching for her water, tv remote, and blankets was impossible. Therefore her reliance on the aides was all encompassing. While some of the aides treated out mother with patience and respect, there was a consistent lack of understanding, a sense that out mother should be doing more to assist the aides and a conveyed feeling that our mother was a burden and inconvenience. Over the course of 17 months, we reported specific instances of inappropriate, rude and hurtful comments, such as; " you are too heavy for us to move", "you don't help us at all", "stop drinking so we don't have to toilet you so much", "my back hurts from lifting you") however, the response from the administration was always in favor of the aides. We were always told that the aides reported a different version of the incident with our mother being described as uncooperative and needy. We found this to be unconscionable, indefensible and without regard to our mother's feelings or well-being. We never felt as though our mother was cared for or respected in the way we were told she would be during our tour and inspection of Brookdale. The last 2 -3 weeks of our mother's stay at Brookdale caused great concern by family members. She was attended to last for meals resulting in her eating a cold breakfast alone in the dining room; oftentimes being the only resident at her table for lunches and dinners. Our mother was a dynamic, vibrant and accomplished independent woman who experienced many unfortunate physical illnesses which slowly limited her mobility. She remained sharp and had limited cognitive impairment which made her treatment at Brookdale all the more demeaning and unacceptable. She always stated that she felt she was treated as less than a human being which made her situation all the more difficult and sad for her and our family. We have since moved her to another facility where she receives respectful and decent treatment as she should. In our first week, an incident arose in which an aide made an inappropriate comment. When we reported it to the administration, it was handled in a quick and professional manner with the aide apologizing to our mother and family members. This is all we ask and expect; for our mother to be treated with respect, dignity and kindness. Unfortunately we rarely experienced that at Brookdale.

He requested kosher food, and was provided with a very limited diet that essentially consisted of stuffed shells and sandwiches - a very poor diet, especially considering he was supposed to be building back up his strength and endurance after pneumonia. Communication (the lack thereof) continued to be a major problem. After yelling and screaming several times, we finally got little bits and pieces of information from the facility. While at Cranbury Center, he contracted Covid (and was sent into "isolation" as a result), and then suffered another bout of pneumonia. The facility at least called us to tell us about these occurrences. Finally, he had shortness of breath and a low oxygen level, which resulted in the staff releasing him back to the hospital. Thank goodness he was finally able to "escape!" To add insult to injury, the facility then sent my parents a bill of close to $3000, since they'd kept him for more than 21 days and his Medicare only covered the first 21 days. The facility's lack of professionalism and transparency have been absolutely appalling, and my father on more than one occasion told me he felt like he was not going to survive his stay there. We have told the hospital that, if he needs to be released back into rehab, under absolutely no circumstances was he to be released to Cranbury Center.

You made our decision very easy because your facility can offer superb programs and care. I was confident enough to leave my parents under Atrium's care because everyone treated my parents like a family. Daisy Newson the Director is very professional and understands how important family decision it is to entrust their parents to a facility without feeling guilty. I feel her genuine compassion towards my parents . My parents lifestyle changed for good after moving to Atrium Assisted Living. They are both happier with the care, food and activities. It is also convenient for my Dad to go to his physical therapy because it's just next door. The convenience you provided from the visiting doctors , 24/7 nurses and aides is unparalleled. The facility itself is like a five stars resort. I particularly like Ms. Newson's unique approach to her clients by assuring us that Atrium will take good care of my parents and most importantly you value the trust of every family that come to seek for the best care of their parents. I would highly recommend Atrium Assisted Living to anyone that seeks excellent place for their loved ones.
