I came with my boyfriend for the afternoon tea on a Saturday. Reservations for the afternoon tea begin at 2 PM to avoid the lunch rush. When we arrived we were greeted by a hostess outside at the end of a narrow staircase. Pretty busy place with lots of patio seating out front. We were told our area was ready for us in the back corner of the restaurant. Upon entering it was packed and disappointingly dark in the area we were sitting. Our table already had two scones and some jellies and cream waiting for us and an empty tea pot with cups. I wonder how long our scones were sitting there considering we arrived about 10 minutes early. About 10 minutes went by without anyone helping us as I chowed down on the cold scone which was nothing special. After it seemed like the lunch rush calmed down our waitress began bringing out food. I ordered the royal tea for $38 and my boyfriend got the high tea for $28. For the royal tea it came with a flute of champagne and a strawberry goat cheese salad. Two wooden cases with loose tea were brought out for us to choose from, 5 black teas and 3 herbal - very limited selection and relatively standard types of teas. Our food was brought to us on two cakes stands placed on each other. The presentation was cute with three types of sandwiches on top and a variety of desserts on the bottom. I have a big sweet tooth and man was I disappointed with the desserts. They seemed like they were just store bought, maybe that's why we had to call in advance and they said they had to buy things ahead of time. Overall the presentation of the food and tea were great, good ambiance but would have preferred a better lit area of the restaurant. Service was extremely slow when it came towards the end of the meal, it took awhile to get service but always friendly and nice. Food was very disappointing considering it was a $60+ bill for store bought desserts and cold scones. I would not recommend the tea service but perhaps just sticking to their regular menu. read more

Clifton Cafe is a cute little hole in the ground with good crepes and better coffee. For a savory crepe I'd recommend the Evan's Exotic but I always get it as a sandwich because the combination of Chicken, feta, pesto, tomatoes, and spinach stuck between two slices of bread tastes like Spring. For a sweet crepe I'd have to rave about the Mocha Madness. It's their only chocolate batter crepe and it's entirely focused on pleasing the palettes of caffeine addicts. I love this restaurant have been going for years but during COVID I went to brunch there and was appalled by one of the waiters who was not wearing his mask correctly. It was extremely loose and only over his month. I asked him to pull it over his nose and he did for a second and then continued to walk around and serve people food with it not on properly, breathing all over everyone's food. Clifton Cafe is a small cafe in Clifton. It's an inviting atmosphere; the kind of place people can sit, enjoy a beverage (of the caffeine persuasion for me hehe) and really relax. I really like the chalk art on the walls that display their menu choices. They make specialty drinks and serve food. Pastries, sandwiches, and crepes. The Clifton Cafe is exactly the kind of place you expect to find in Clifton's quaint throw-back of a downtown from upscale Mayberry. Comfortable seating and ambience, really good food, friendly and efficient service. But why is everybody ordering the sandwiches? They make phenomenal crepes here - anybody can make a decent frikkin sandwich. Get a crepe - really. Whether it's for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert or snack - they are awesome. The only thing that would make me more comfortable in this place would be if I could get the word "crrrrehps" to roll off my tongue without sounding like I was a poseur from Fairfax Station. The weather outside was cool and slightly damp, and being inside Clifton Cafe just made so much sense. Anyway, rain or shine, I still think Clinton Cafe is a godsend because there really aren't too many of these types of places in Fairfax County. Historic Clifton is such a charming area, and if visiting, you should stop by Clifton Cafe for the superlative crepes and interesting milk shakes, coffees, and desserts. Plus, you can also get freshly baked bread here. We sampled the vegetarian crepe and Don's Delight (peanut butter, bananas, chocolate, and powdered sugar). Both were delicious, and the crepe skins were delightfully eggy, thin, and fragrant. We recently sampled a crepe in Cleveland, and while tasty, it couldn't compare to these two. Clifton Cafe's preparation and presentation was so much more artful. The interior of the coffee shop is very inviting thanks to details like chalkboards with sayings and menu specials written on them, comfy looking chairs, and the friendly faces at the counter. You can also sit outside under heated lamps on nippy days or enjoy the summer breeze when it's warmer. Clifton Cafe is an ideal meeting place whether you're catching up with a friend or out on a casual date. Getting there may not be as fun on a bad weather day because the road leading to historic Clifton is windy and the surrounding woods are possibly swarming with deer, but it's worth making the trip on nice days and days when the roads aren't too slick. read more

My family has been in or around this area for 4+ generations. We used to have to make a 40 minute trek to DC for a decent cup of coffee. Once we learned that Clifton cafe opened, we were all delighted. Those were the golden years. Enter Clifton cafe, 2013. Nowadays Clifton cafe is a 45 min fiasco. Watery coffee and terrible service is routine. On my most recent trip I felt invisible. One thing was quite clear, the Clifton cafe of yesteryear was gone. Clearly, nothing lasts forever. The wife and I ventured out to Clifton today and stopped by this cute lil cafe for lunch (yes, I said cute, deal with it bucko). The place has a very quaint coffee shop feel to it. The decor inside of the place just totally fits. It's very warm and welcoming. They have a nice selection of coffee drinks as well as other fun beverages such as Italian sodas and Cremosas. As far as the food goes, the focus on sandwiches and crepes. They have an assortment of pastries and desserts as well. I had the roast beef sammich with roasted red peppers and havarti. It was good stuff. They served the sammiches with homemade potato salad which was also quiet good. I also had a banana and nutella crepe which was REALLY tasty. They topped it with powdered sugar and it was quite a tasty after sammich treat. The service was also very good. The waitress was friendly and fairly prompt. All in all, great experience and I would definitely come back. But, one lil odd note.... there was a girl sitting in a group sitting by us who ordered one of their turkey sammiches. The waitress came back to inform her they were out of turkey... so she changed her sammich order. Now, I did find it odd that they were out of turkey (and tomatoes too I later learned). But, what was even more interesting was when she came back with the sammiches, she had the girl's original order and said "We found the turkey." Really now... you found the turkey? Do I want to know where it was? I'm hoping somewhere in the refrigerator and not say, sitting on a shelf somewhere for the past few hours going bad... They offer variety of crepes and brunch menu, in addition to their long list of specialty espressos. Loved my spicy chicken guacamole crepe, and my friend also enjoyed the Nutella crepe with extra topping of strawberries for .50-.75 cents. It is a bit pricey for a local cafe but I love the location, and also the coziness of this place. I will definitely be back to try out other things on the menu! read more

Me and my boyfriend visited this cafe for the first time today and will not come back. First impression was that it was a very cozy cafe with friendly staff. We both ordered hot chocolate and we overheard one of the employees ask how to make hot chocolate... I also ordered a fudge brownie and my boyfriend ordered a scone. The hot chocolate was very tasteless and barely warm. Tasted like it was just milk and chocolate syrup. The brownie and the scone was tasteless. Brownie did not really taste like chocolate. The scone said it would have cinnamon, apples and raisins in the scone but the only thing that my boyfriend could taste was the raisins. As we were eating a whole bunch of flies surrounded us. They do not have a lot of flowers which would attract flies so I am thinking they might not take the trash out that often...? read more

I have always loved Old Town Clifton for the quaint, charming spots that basically embody the perfect date day/night. Clifton Cafe is no exception. I popped in here one weekend morning to grab brunch and a coffee. I was promptly greeted by the friendly staff who was going to seat me next to another table but allowed me to wait for one that had a little more breathing room (there is one tight section where you are essentially elbow to elbow with the adjacent table). The décor of the place is exactly what you'd imagine for a small coffeehouse/brunch café. Dark blue walls, 99% wooden everything, incandescent light bulbs, a chalk wall menu. Typical, but only because it works. Noise level wasn't too bad either, in spite of the crowd. Browsing over their menu I was pleased with the variety. They had a large assortment of crepes, some sweet, some savory, along with other common brunch staples, sandwiches, salads, etc. The prices seemed just a bit high, but I held hope that the quality of the food and drink would justify the cost. I opted for the Meat Lovers crepe with a Macadamia nut white chocolate latte. The crepe I received was good, but I wouldn't say that it was worth $13. It was slightly smaller than I would have hoped. The latte also was not entirely worth it, as it did not immediately come off as white chocolate or macadamia nut. Truthfully, I didn't want to give Clifton Cafe 4 stars due to the price to quality ratio of the food and drink, but I think 3 stars due solely to price would've been too harsh for what is otherwise a great spot to spend an afternoon. And perhaps their sweet crepes are better than their savory crepes. I would come back to try something different and recommend that you check it out! read more

Going with three and a half stars on this one... Visited with a friend and her two kids on Monday afternoon. A few other patrons, but all in all not a busy time. Cozy, warm atmosphere greeted me as I walked in the door and the magic bars in the pastry case called my name (but I resisted). Food: Ordered a savory crepe with spinach, goat cheese, chicken, and dates. It was huge and it was tasty.Lots of other choices on the menu that looked appealing. Smoothie choices also looked tempting. Price: (lost half a star)-For a crepe it came to over $12. A little pricey, but I do know that a lot of work goes into making them well. Service: (lost 1 star here)- Servers were slow and not particularly personable. Water was never refilled and our table was not followed up with once order arrived. They seemed more focused on gathering behind the counter socializing with one another. Bottom line: Would I return? If I am in Clifton again and feeling crepe-sy yes. Will I make a special trip? Each time I've been here there have been more staff than customers, but unfortunately the staff spend most of the time behind the counter talking amongst themselves. This is such a picturesque place! Exactly what I envision a small town coffee shop to be. The place is small, but so cozy. I got some tea and all of us ordered crepes to try. Every bite I tried was delicious. My crepe had oats and pumpkin inside which reminded me of oatmeal. The boyfriend had some mixed berries in his. I don't think you can go wrong with what to order here. The level of detail in the coffee even shows in the intricate designs they have on the top with coffee and milk. All the people that worked here are super nice. They had a table cleared out for us in no time for us to enjoy the place and I really would not have minded waiting longer. My only complaint of the place is that the seating is a little cramped, but they're letting as much people to enjoy the place at once. The perfect small town getaway to check out! read more

This could be 5 stars if management understood how to treat customers. Had the special today which was too dry to consume. Asked for extra sauce to fix it but still was too dry. Waitress (great by the way) said she would tell her boss and that she was sorry. Weird thing is, they kept it on my bill. Charged me $9 for something I ate a quarter of. They should have just swallowed the cost of the sub (probably $3 cost to them) for my repeat business down the road. Not sure why they decided to not have my business for 3 whole dollars...... On the plus side, some of the best latte's around and great options for crepes! Should def check it out, just don't get the meatball special. Can never get enough of their "Matt's Meatless Mistake" crepe- the perfect option for a vegetarian! Full of vegetables and cheese, perfect for any morning. My Favorite Coffee Cafe of ALL TIME, no seriously. The first time I stumbled upon this little gem was during a girl outing with my bridesmaids to Paradise Springs back in 2011. We stopped and parked on the little downtown street of Clifton and walked around, taking pictures and went into the wine shoppe. We saw Clifton Cafe and a picture of a coffee and we looked at each other in a pre-coffee coma blank stare and telepathically agreed with each other to go up the stairs. We each snagged a spot after each ordering a latte. I remember ordering a Bermuda and a massive coconut macaroon to share with my girlfriends and I believe I blacked out after that. After my first sip of my latte, my eyes rolled back into my head and I believe I experienced some sort of out of body experience...and I'm an atheist. My husband and I only lived about 20 minutes away, so we visited there fairly often after that. He does not drink coffee but he still came with...so sweet. Every time I went, Dan made my coffee and I secretly dreamed about him making me coffee, yeah, he was good. Then, I started going and not seeing Dan, I inquired as to where he was, and sadly he left to go elsewhere or school or something. The girl that made my coffee on that trip disappointed me with her coffee making skills, she didn't even put a beautiful little frothy design on the top...but I learned to just settle for less than what Dan would create. But, don't get me wrong, it is still delicious. I always try to save room for one of the yummy sweets they are selling under the glass (usually involving coconut). Now that we live in DC, we do not get to visit often at all, but on our last encounter, they have expanded their seating area to outside, and now have their liquor/wine/beer license, so we ordered drinks and sat outside. I FINALLY ordered a crepe. Yes, I know they are known for their yummy crepes and over the two years never ordered one, but I can officially say that the one I ordered was delicious! I wish Clifton Cafe would relocate or open a new store right below our building in NoMa, but until then, Clifton Cafe will be my 45 minute drive for an extra special coffee treat. Love love love this place. I heard it can get very crowded, but my gf and I got here at a really odd hour, 10:30am ish on a Thursday, and it was empty. Do not let that fool you! Within the hour, the place was entirely full. Firstly, I love the decor and the set up. Wine is whimsically displayed on the walls, the artwork and chalk boards are beautiful. The mix of regular wooden tables and chairs with upholstered arm chairs is chic. Every item on the menu sounds delicious, for me anyway. Service is great and prompt, very friendly. I had the goat cheese and spinach crepe, and i absolutely loved it. So much so that I decided I was going to learn to make it so I could make it for myself. I am not from VA so I can't exactly return every single day. My gf had the mushroom and cheese crepe, which both of us loved. She had ordered an espresso, I wish I could remember what the name was, but she said it was the best espresso she had ever had. She would not stop talking about it. I had the chai latte, and I liked it too. For dessert we had the chocolate, pb, and banana crepe and we both were huge fans of it. For me it was a little too much pb, but my gf said it was perfect. Very awesome humble little "mom and pop shop". We love taking the kids here on the weekend for family brunch. They tend to be busy on Sunday after 10am. They're very accommodating when we came with 8 people. It is first come first serve but they'll take your name down and call your cell so you can walk around to the stores or the little park down the road until your table is ready. I loved the coffee and especially the presentation with the foam on top. Indulging in a mimosa is also a must. My husband loved the blood orange mimosa and swing in' salmon crepe. My daughter loves the Jenns Joy strawberry banana crepe and I love the sausage supreme crepe. They will customize your order any way you prefer. Worst service I have ever received at a restaurant. I had to go to the counter to get waters for us after waiting 45 minutes for beverages. The food we waited forever for was cold.
