The Wife and I have been coming here for over 20 years. Found this place by happenstance when we were on our honeymoon and fell in love with the food on first bite! We try to make it up at least a couple times of year. The service is always impeccable and the food, there are not enough superlatives to describe the food!! Always love the variety of specials offered and are always torn on what to try next but always start with the seafood pate and escargot! Wonderful olde thyme steak and seafood restaurant. Many selections, plenty of specials and a killer list of appetizers. The place is clean, our service was excellent during our meal time. I had Davey's Locker, which was a nice selection of seafoods, my wife had the prime rib special and it was cooked to perfection along with a nice side of sour cream horseradish. Tiramisu was one of the many dessert selections and we got one to go because we were full from dinner. Hit this place up, you will be glad you did!! read more

Anyone who has an opportunity to have dinner at the Clipper Inn should definitely go! This is the kind of "blast from the past" that should never change! The food was delicious, perfectly cooked, served by the wonderful waitress, Mary, and was everything the reviews said it would be. It's been along time since a place felt as charming as this. If there was a minor complaint to make, we requested that our desserts be served warm ( pecan pie and a crumble). We sent it back because it was not warm at all, and it came out again and was barely lukewarm. Whoever is warming up the desserts should adjust the amount of time in the microwave so that the final note is as perfect as the rest of the meal. I hope this place never changes! First of all, we spend much of the spring summer and fall in Clayton. We have our favorite restaurants which we frequent often and regularly. Having have said this ,we had never tried this place. We were wrapping up our boating season and wanted a celebratory year end dinner. Due to the yelp reviews we made reservations . We were immediately impressed with the atmosphere. I wish our dining experience would have been impressive. We were looking for a nice relaxing dinner. Not to Be ! Our waitress was very impatient! In a big hurry constantly ! Totally destroyed our RELAXING DINNER. She needs to be trained in people skills. Going out to dinner NEEDS TO BE RELAXING. Not hurried. Our dinner was mediocre at $100.00+. If the chef comes out to greet you (he dotes on Mom) at the table, I could deal with the greasiest fried chicken and I'd probably still like the place. Fortunately, the food is quite a bit better. One star off for the price point, but I get that it's better than 95 percent of the places within a 30 mile radius. A wide variety from Italian to duck breast... kind of like an eclectic upscale diner without the breakfast. We popped into the Clipper in on our first night in Clayton. Although it was prime dinner time and we had no reservations, they cheerfully found us seating in the lounge. Although they were super busy, the waitress immediately took our drink orders and brought delicious fresh warm bread. I ordered the shrimp scampi and my husband ordered the grilled salmon. Dinner began with a salad that puts most to shame. The honey mustard dressing was delicious. I enjoyed my shrimp scampi, that had a generous amount of shrimp over angel hair. I think my husband was even more pleased with his salmon that came with a dollop of butter on top (easily removed if you prefer not to have it), canteloupe on the side, and a medley of vegetables. Definitely no room for dessert! We had a lovely dinner and would definitely return, upon our next visit to Clayton. read more

This place is fantastic. We've been coming to this area for years, but never have stopped. It will now be a regular stop! I had the filet and lobster. Both were outstanding. The lobster was one of the best tails I have had in a long time, and this is with yearly visits to the cape! House salad with creamy garlic was outstanding! The side special was sweet mashed potatoes and they were seasoned perfectly and not too mushy as sometimes they can be. My children loved the giant grilled chicken quesadilla - and the special touch of a fruit salad plate! My husband had the broiled cod, and he said it was good but after tasting my filet and my lobster, I think he was jealous! We almost skipped dessert until I saw another review recommending the Napoleon...oh my goodness!!!!! It was to die for! Unbelievable good food starting with their very special salad and ending with desserts "to die for". The owner will have it no other way! He can often be seen stopping by a table to chat a bit and see that the guests are pleased or just to say "hello." I grant you I've been locked in for 3 months, but it was my anniversary and I wanted to treat my wife- I say the Clipper was bailable for take out so started to do an online order. I noticed a note and called and was surprised to find they had opened for inside table Service! Dinner was as special as I remembered - we weren't disappointed at all! I had a wonderful 30th birthday dinner at Clipper Inn. I tried the Portuguese swordfish dish that was on their specials menu. The fiance had duck with cabbage and cranberries. I thought both dishes were wonderful but the swordfish was definitely closer to my preferred flavor palate. The swordfish sauce had tomatoes and bell pepper and was perfectly seasoned. The portion sizes were just right (not too big). The entrees come with a side salad that was much more substantial and delicious than I expected. I tried both the creamy garlic and the creamy horseradish dressing. I thought the horseradish was exceptionally better. The garlic one didn't have a lot of garlic flavor. The side salad had tomatoes, escarole, shredded carrot, cabbage, pepperoni slices, and croutons. It was colorful and delicious. You're given free bread prior to the salad. The bread comes with an oil and spices dip. I felt like they gave too much oil and that was a bit wasteful. I would have liked more spices in there. They give you the bread on a cutting board with a knife so you have to do the cutting yourself. For dessert I tried the napoleon with Chambord sauce and the German chocolate cake/pie. The desserts were very yummy but both were too sweet. The napoleon cream could have been 1/3 sweetness and it still would have been delicious. The German chocolate pie is a new addition to the menu. I liked how many dessert options they have. They also have a ton of coffee options. Thank you to the waitress that brought out the birthday dessert sang happy birthday to me. The interior of the restaurant is super cute. There are tree branches/twigs everywhere with fairy lights. I tried two cocktails: key lime martini and tropical martini. Both were super delicious. I liked the key lime one slightly more. It wasn't too sweet and wasn't too strong in alcohol flavor. I liked the foamy/creamy quality of it. read more

I am so happy we tried this restaurant! Everything was delicious. The bread and garlic herb olive oil was a great starter. Our entrees came with salads and I chose the thousand island dressing. The salad was huge and had olives, cabbage, mandarin oranges, carrots, onions, and tomatoes. The dressing was perfect. Tangy, sweet, and just the right amount of creaminess. I would come back just for the salad! For the entree, the steak was slightly overcooked, but it didn't matter because it was still so juicy. Seasoning was spot on. The shrimp scampi was also very good. And fries were amazingly crispy. Somehow we managed to order dessert even though we were full. The Napoleon sounded too good to pass and we were right. The cream between crispy pastry and tangy raspberry sauce was the perfect ending to our meal. read more

We were in the Thousand Islands area 10/8- 10/11 and came here for dinner twice. Our first evening we went somewhere else for dinner and it was terrible! We were delighted on Friday when we came to the Clipper Inn and had a wonderful dinner served by a very nice waitress. We were very happy, so happy that we decided to come back on Saturday. Our waitress was Emma and again, she was wonderful, along with her 2 brothers who were also assisting. And we were told that dad was in the kitchen where he has been for many many years. Ok... wow. I'm seriously amazed. Everything from the moment we entered the restaurant was amazing. The server staff were so kind and warm, checking on us every time it was necessary. They were very knowledgeable about the menu. The owner actually works at the kitchen, and he came over to check on all the tables around including ours. Now, the food - I've had the shrimp,shitake and crabmeat pasta, my girlfriend had the rack of lamb. And there was absolutely nothing I would change about those dishes. Simply cooked to perfection. They advertise the best shrimp scampi you ever had. Not by a landslide. I ordered the steak and scampi. The salad was both beautiful, very colorful and delicious as they make their own dressings. Steak medium well came out burnt and flavorless. I don't think they used any spices. Scampi was 3 shrimp in melted butter. Very little garlic and again, fairly flavorless. For dessert we ordered dark chocolate mousse, which wasn't very dark. Was okay. The chocolate pâté was fabulous!!! A chocolate lovers dream! So for $95 for 2, I enjoyed the salad and the dessert. It was a last minute decision to visit the Clipper and we called at 4:30 and took a 6:30 reservation. Upon arrival, we were seated immediately. It had been quite some time since we had been here for dinner and our waitress, Sam, was uber patient and gave us time to peruse the menu. My husband went with the rack of lamb, which was one of his favorite items from Sbarros and he hasn't found anyplace since they closed that he really liked. Until tonight. It was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. I had a hankering for steak alfredo which wasn't on the menu. I know it never hurts to ask and our amazing waitress, Sam, said she was pretty confident she could make it happen. Not only did she make it happen, but It. Was. Fabulous! I purposefully saved some to take home so I could indulge in dessert and while I'm not typically at a loss for words, The Napoleon left me speechless. It was SO, SO good! Such a great place to eat! Staff is attentive, seating inside or on the patio, both great spaces. Patio has space heaters so you don't freeze while eating out there at night. Restaurant is kept very clean and wait staff is consistently busy attending to customer needs. Soft music, nice lighting, and appropriate decorations make it a very inviting atmosphere. Complimentary bread is perfectly warm and crispy. Drinks are tasty. Ordered the Cashew and Coconut encrusted chicken which was the tastiest meal I have had in months. Chicken was perfectly tender and just the right amount of curry on the side. Salad was tasty with different dressing options and included red onions, olives, tomatos, lettuce, croutons. Seems like a nice place for families and couples. Menu had quite a variety of options which is refreshing to see. Prices seem reasonable. This restaurant is definitely worth trying at least once! The Clipper is our favorite restaurant in the Thousand Islands. The bartenders and chef make you feel like family even though we are only summer residents . We have never had a bad meal in the 15 years we have been vacationing here. The chef has his eye on the current trends but also keeps the favorites. It is not on the water but they have captured the River vibe in their decor. Give them a try if you have not. You won't be disappointed!! read more

Easily the best restaurant in the Alex Bay/Clayton region - seriously. This is our third time there, every time has been fantastic. The halibut and duck breast entrees were great, and their dinner salads are next level! I wish I could make one that good at home. Fair price for what you get. I recently led a Thousand Islands bike tour of 8 friends, a repeat of an annual event. We were staying one Friday night in Clayton and had dined elsewhere in Clayton previously and the choices had not been to everyone's satisfaction, so I looked for another option and found the Clipper Inn. Initially, I made a reservation for 8 people and then needed to change it to 9. I also had to change the time of the reservation twice. And touring by bicycle, it was hard to know our actual arrival time at the motel nor what time everyone would be ready. We ended up arriving at the restaurant a half hour before our reservation time. Nine hungry cyclists expected to wait at the bar until our table would be ready. We were surprised when we were lead graciously through the busy dining room to our waiting table! From that point, things only got better! The accommodations were comfortable, the wait staff was attentive, the prices were reasonable, the food was good, portions ample, and a great time was had by all. I heartily recommend the Clipper Inn. read more

Camping in this area, we went to the Clipper Inn upon recommendation from a local. I ordered the split king crab legs and my husband the prime rib. From the artisan bread, salad and entrees, our food was of excellent quality and taste. Our service was fantastic( Thankyou Fransuase!). We finished with Irish coffee and dark chocolate mousse. The only disappointment was a take home key lime pie that was to tart( I liked it, my husband didn't), however, our experience still rates 5 stars. This place only is getting any stars due to the service and the ambiance. The crab legs I ordered were over cooked and a waste of 45$ , the rice pilaf was inedible and hard as a rock. They tried to make it up to me with a free desert but after ruining an expensive meal it didn't seem like a fair trade.
