Very old school place with a vintage style dining experience. Red table clothes and the traditional glass salad plates and decor on the walls really reminded me of great seafood restaurants in the 90s. This place is huge and they have a lot of food to choose from. The specials were all really good, I got a seasonal special perfect for the late summer/ early fall time of year. It was a shrimp risotto with corn and pumpkin seeds. I wasn't sure how it would go together when I ordered it but I trusted the chef and I wasn't disappointed! Been going to the Clipper for 20 years now. Brought our friends who have never been there last night. Food was fantastic as usual BUT Diane our server brought us what we thought was our bill, and we paid it with a 30% tip. We were finishing up our cocktails and 15 minutes later she comes over and tells us she was sorry but she gave us the wrong bill. We owed another 42.00. Ummm what would you have done if we would have left? You would have been screwed. The audacity of her to come and get more money from us so she could keep her tip not gonna lie pissed me off. She should have used her tip to cover it and took the loss. My husband said we just won't go back and I said so I have to stop going to one of my favorite dining spots because sure she messed up? Not hardly but you can bet when I make my next reservation, I will ask not to be seated at one of her tables. read more

To start, even with a reservation, you will still probably have to wait for a table, albeit maybe only 20 minutes. Once that was done, we were seated at an table on the inside dining room. I ordered off the special menu; Fresh halibut with bearnaise sauce and a baked potato. My partner ordered the "Boston cod" Oscar (or, another name for "scrod"), which came with asparagus and bearnaise, and a side of mashed potatoes with cheddar. Both meals were delicious, and service was pretty good. With 2 glasses of wine and no appetizers, the bill was over $90. They are also noted for steaks (which were pretty pricey..), but neither of us were really in the mood for red meat on such a hot day. Would return there if in the area again. read more

On our 62th Anniversary no less. We were seated at a table less than three feet from a raucous party of 10 adults well into a evening of wine tasting, filet mignons and loud conversation. Our waitress; also the waitress for the party of 10, eventually found her way to our table. Took our order for drinks, my escargot appetizer, salads, and breaded?, sautéed scallops("finished in a garlic creme sauce/white wine"). A young man brought my drink and some warm bread/butter. The ambient noise level was so loud that we quickly decided that any conversation was ludicrous; and decided to just sit and wait. But, over an hour later, we were still quietly waiting. Couldn't help but notice how our waitress seemed clearly dedicating her time to serving the large party. I complained to the maître de forthwith. Things dramatically changed. The young man who brought our bread when we were first seated, almost immediately brought our salads(without a word I would add). I advised; forget the escargot! The waitress next brought our scallop entrees and offered a quick word or 2 of apology. "I forgot to submit your order, I've been here 9 years"? The scallops were fresh and large, served on a dinner plate with a curvy slice of pineapple as garnish I presume. Unfortunately, it was clear that the lightly breaded shellfish had been slipped into ?? to heat them up and then a large dollop or scoop of garlic butter was dropped in the center. She returned in a very few minutes with our check; and more words. "Can I send you home with dessert boxes free". I just stared at her. And stated how she had totally and completely ruined our special day. She offered then to remove one meal, I accepted and left near nothing for her tip. Question: Did our waitress deliberately "forget" us elderly seniors in favor of the obvious "wonderful big bill" multi-hundred $ tip forthcoming from the large party? We were in the thousand islands area for Memorial Day w/e n were looking for a place for dinner n found clipper inn on Yelp. Nice clean restaurant. Seemed a like a small place but Looks are deceiving. Friendly welcoming staff. We had the sweet potato ravioli, sword fish special, filet and seafood pasta special. They were all delicious. Also the warm bread n side salads w house made dressings were very good. We topped it off w dark chocolate mousse, creme brûlée and the napoleon w raspberry dressing. . Oh my !! the Desserts were out of this world. So yummy. Diane our waitress was the best n recommended some of the best dishes and deserts. If u r in the area stop by. You will enjoy the food. I can see why a reservation is needed; casual yet feel free to dress up; plenty of parking attentive staff helpful with suggestions. They have specials which is why I was able have the pate. Their seafood plater was delicious and enough for two or 1 that's very hungry I throughly enjoyed it . Our waitress was helpful telling us our deserts options and what was most popular making the choices easy . I'm beyond saddened that the Clipper Inn will close for the season soon. read more

When on your 1st visit to Boldt Castle you ask for a good local favorite for dinner and 5 dock and Castle employees all say Clipper Inn, you gotta go! Boy, were they right! Menu had many enticing choices, homemade warm bread was excellent. My shrimp scampi was seasoned perfectly. Husband's cod Oscar and mashed potatoes were also excellent. Casual restaurant with a very extensive menu. We took advantage of the early special which includes a glass of wine and slightly smaller portions. It was plenty of food for 2 seniors. Price was also good. Before tax and tip it was a little over $50 and that was with dessert. Without dessert would have been under $50. Would definitely eat there again when in the area. read more

First time at the Clipper in about 21 years. The exterior looks similar to what it used to but obviously well maintained. We had reservations which were honored on time. The staff were extremely congenial and friendly. The entrees( Boston Cod Oscar and Chicken Cordon Blue) were delicious and both came with choice of soup or salad and a side dish. I opted for salad which was fresh and a decent size, my lady had French Onion soup that was ok but not great. We both decided to go for dessert ( unusual for us ). A Napoleon for her and a blueberry/rhubarb crisp with ice cream for me. Both were large and yum! The total bill with a couple of drinks ( n/a for me ) was $102.00 which we both thought was reasonable. If you happen to be up in the 1000 Islands, do yourself a favor and check out The Clipper Inn. Last night my husband and I ate at the Clipper Inn for the first time after living in the area for a few years. Overall the service, ambience inside the restaurant and food were good. I called on Saturday morning for an early reservation that evening at 5 for 2 and they were friendly taking my reservation as well as when we arrived 15 minutes late, got us right in to our table. Our server was nice and took good care of us. She brought out fresh baked bread right away and she and the team of servers made sure our water/ice tea glasses never went dry. My husband and I decided to split a lot of their appetizers/small plates to try out a bunch of their dishes! The three standout dishes were two specials of the evening the carrot ravioli-so delicious and so happy that we had leftovers today for lunch! Also the mussels in cognac cream was super tasty! What a great sauce! The dinner salad (or whatever the large one was) was beautifully presented and I love that it includes eggs, red onion, mandarin oranges, pepperoni, shredded cabbage and carrots and a homemade ranch-delicious! We also tried the following: Blackened chicken Alfredo-would not order again. Shrimp Scampi- nice amount of shrimp! You get a limited choice of items on the early bird menu but it includes a glass of wine, an entree, bread and salad for a reasonable price. We could tell she really liked working there which is a good sign. We had a reservation and came in on a Friday before the big rush right at 5pm. I had their prime rib (large cut) and it was awesome! My wife had their Boston cod and she loved it, too. They serve warm bread with dipping oil when you are seated, which is a nice touch. We each had their roasted veggie side and they were really good as well. The final nice touch was the fact that they brought out a complimentary dessert since it was our anniversary. I have to admit I have a certain nostalgia for restaurants like the Clipper Inn. Some may find them old fashioned but they remind me of my childhood. And in this case the food is also excellent. For dinner we started with the Carrot Ravioli with Brown Butter and Sage. I liked this more than my husband who thought it was a bit bland, but I really like carrots so that wasn't a surprise. Then came the house salad that accompanies most entrees. I love that they take the time to compose each one - red cabbage, carrots, olives, cherry tomatoes, mandarin oranges, and always two pieces of pepperoni. You have your choice of dressing. I then had the broiled halibut with a nice bearnaise sauce and rice pilaf on the side. My husband had the rack of lamb which was particularly good - well cooked and served with mint jelly. I would recommend both. Our nice waitress was very accommodating of our request to take dessert to go. We enjoyed the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cheesecake and Chocolate Pate later in the evening. Though we had no reservation and the restaurant was packed, they managed to squeeze us in after a five to ten minute wait. With an outstanding recommendation from a local winery to eat here, I couldn't have been happier. The Clipper Inn is a hidden gem in Clayton, NY. They take reservations snd walk ups. Plenty of parking. Large bar with a very fun vine. The decor is so cute inside with old-antique boats in the ceiling. The bread service is unique as the fresh baked bread is served with dipping oil and roasted red peppers, onions and garlic. I could sit and that all day long. All entrees come with a garden salad. The crock of french onion soup was oh so cheesy and full of onion goodness. The chicken parm was addictive and the prime rib had tremendous flavor and cooked perfectly (not to mention a hefty cut of beef!). We also ordered the sweet pea raviolis with crispy prosciutto, UNREAL. It was a special that needs to be added to the regular menu. Sweet, savory and cheesy. We shared the special Buffalo shrimp appetizer special, that was awesome. Each of us ordered the salad with the Italian dressing and bleu cheese crumbles. What a fantastic treat. My wife enjoyed the halibut special with the garlic butter sauce, I had the seafood scampi. We both recommend each. The cocktails were first class and worthy of praise. The desserts were wonderful.
