This restaurant was recommended to us by the gas attendant, at one of the marinas in town. We asked what she recommended for the water, a place with good burgers, and this was one of her two suggestions, and we're happy that we came here. Prices were very reasonable and the menu selection was varied, but the focus was traditionally American fare, steaks, burgers, chicken and the like. If beer is something you like, they have a huge beer menu. The wine list was also very long. All three of us got burgers and asked for the medium. Two were perfect, but mine was more of a medium, rare side, however, I eat it is cooked, and it was delicious. My wife had ordered a pickle for hers, but none came with the meal, and she didn't feel like asking for one after the fact. Overall, the food is very good, and the prices were less than what one would expect to pay at a restaurant in a resort town. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the weight staff. They were very friendly and seated as quickly, but allowed us time to relax and enjoy a nice summer evening on the deck. We stopped yesterday afternoon, around 3 on Wed., it was quiet, but the staff was jolly on the spot. I asked for coffee, brewed a fresh pot, the food was very good, I have one of the burgers, my wife went with a salad with grilled chicken. Visited Thurs nite after labor day and really happy we went here. Not very busy; sat out on porch on the warm summer nite. Welcomed and seated promptly; servers very friendly and attentive. Large selection of craft beers; mainly in cans; but a nice list and both were great; although they could have a few more stouts, but the one they had suited me. Nice sized fresh side salad. K got the creamy mushroom pasta; was very very tasty. I got Blackened MahiMahi which was cooked perfectly; tender and seasoned well. Also nice portion of Fresh broccoli for the veggie. Not a rice pilaf guy; so subbed for the waffle fries; no problem for the server and they were very good as well. Everyone there seemed to be finishing their plates and looked happy. Nice place, but get there early! We tried the night before but were turned away because they were so busy they weren't seating anyone else. We watched them do the same thing on Monday too. I had their shrimp scampi that was delicious. My husband had the lasagna and really enjoyed it too. Their salad with homemade Italian dressing was also good. But no bread was served. My family and I visited Alexandria Bay for fourth of July. We stopped for dinner and this place looked nice. A fun old house turned into a restaurant. The front porch was a wonderful outdoor eating area that was very large. We did sit inside with plenty of seating and no waiting. It did take sometime to first receive service that is why they get 4 stars instead of 5. I had to go ask for drinks, but once a server came over the service was good. The prices are fair and the food was fantastic. Everyone enjoy their food. I had the stuffed shells with shrimp and it was fantastic. I would recommend to others for sure. read more

Not a lot of 4 star reviews in the town but the River House earned it for our lunch today. The wife had the haddock sandwich which came with a nice piece of fish and when you're ordering fish you want a "nice" piece of fish. I had a bacon cheeseburger which was cooked right though it could use more bacon but what burger can't? The only waitress working ran her butt off but the service didn't suffer because of it. Disappointed in the cleanliness of this restaurant. I expect to sit at a table with a clean tablecloth if the plates of pasta start at $15+. Every spot for our table of 5 had grease stained tablecloth that sat in our laps (as if the prior customers did not have napkins). I felt like I wanted to wash my hands the entire time. When I went to the restroom to wash my hands- I was even more grossed out by the filth. I was disappointed by our waitress, that did not know the tap list or the wine list. This place is a hidden gem. We started with the mozzarella sticks appetizer and they were freshly made ( not frozen then reheated ), and so delicious! I had the shrimp Po'Boy, which was 9 beautifully fried shrimp with a nice kick of heat in the batter, tomato, red onion and lettuce on a hoagie roll with their mayo, and every bite was fantastic! Hubby had the Haddock fish fry with thick cut waffle fries and said it's one of the best he's ever had! The service was outstanding too! Our waiter new his menu and was attentive ad congenial without hovering over us. The prices were great, maybe even a little lower than we expected for such great food! Had dinner with my family on a Friday evening. No wait for an outside table. The server was very nice, and was great with the kids. The dinner salad was an appropriate size, simple, but good. The dinner rolls were served hot and drenched in butter...excellent. I wanted more. The salmon was good as well as the kids spaghetti. The meatballs were the table favorite. We checked out the menus of a few restaurants and decided on The Riverhouse because of their specials not because of their standard fare menu. My wife and I each ordered a different soup and shared the rigatoni with vodka sauce. French onion soup was very tasty and the stuffed pepper soup was thick and delicious. The vodka sauce was excellent. Portion size was large enough to share and there was no charge to split the meal. It wasn't busy so the waitress chatted with us a bit and was very attentive. Food was ok. Would have been told a time for how long it was going to take before being seated. Definitely don't feel like the food was worth the price. Server was friendly and very polite. Food took a bit to come out of the kitchen and was warm when we got it. Mountain Dew had a funny taste, was able to replace it with another drink with no problem. My friends and I were in Alex Bay while on vacation and were about to go to the Dockside Pub for a late lunch when we saw the River house next door. The service was very good. Our young waitress was extremely friendly and joked around with us. The food was o.k. I had their special of the day - Cajun Tilapia Po Boy. The Cajun seasoning was OK, but a little lite. The sandwich was overpowered by the tartar sauce spread on the hoagie roll. The sandwich was served with waffle fries which were very good. Several of us ordered New England Clam Chowder which was not as thick as we all had been hoping for. Others in my group ordered cheese burgers, chicken parm hoagie, hot roast beef sandwich, a white pizza with broccoli and a children's order of spaghetti and meatballs. The children's order was a great size for the cost. The white pizza was a good size, but the crust tasted like it was a pre-made frozen crust. Burgers were ordered medium rare and came medium. So, we tried to try this place out but didn't get very far. We sat at a table that wasn't clean but, ok, I get it, its Fourth of July weekend. Yet, it wasn't busy.... Anyways, they gave us menus and a "specials" menu. I ordered two items off the specials menu. Right away, the server let me know that they were out of my one item. Ok, fine. I picked an item off the regular menu. She comes back about 10 minutes later and let's me know the other item from the "specials" menu was gone as well. It was only 1:30 with a full day to go and the two things I wanted were already sold out. We ended up leaving. "They can take a reservation, but they just can't hold the reservation, and that's really the most important part...." Awful place and rude service.... We called ahead for a reservation for a party of 16 and the girl who answered told us that she could seat us in 30 minutes. It was a nice day so we decided to walk down to the restaurant (a 25 minute walk). When we got there the hostess or manager, rudely informed us that there was no way they could seat a party of 16 on a Saturday night with 30 minutes notice. Despite the fact that her hostess informed us that they could seat us at that time. Although she admitted that the she took our reservation the manager refused to seat us. The frustrating thing was that there was no line and there were multiple open tables outside. This left us a bit screwed as it was 7pm at this point and we had no where to go. Sad thing is we have been here numerous times before- it's usually the restaurant we frequent most while visiting Alexandria bay. Typically it would rank about three stars in the past. The food is always decent with a good variety, the service is hit or miss but we are used to that and I typically have a little more patience having worked In the food industry so that is never really a big deal but this time when we went, the staff was annoyed, too busy to wait on us. We walked in and the outside was full, ok no big deal we will sit inside- the only ones inside seated right by the door. The girl that sat us told us someone would be right with us. As far as I could tell there were only 2 other servers besides her. We waited at least 15 minutes before she came back to at least take our drink order which after another server walked by and said he'd be right with us. After getting our drinks slammed down on the table we waited another 10 minutes before he was "right with us" he seemed super annoyed to even have to be bothered to take our order. My husband has a shell fish allergy so we asked if they cook certain things separately and his response was we try to not cross contaminate, but everything is cooked together. Um. That is hardly not trying to cross contaminate and also contradicts itself. We just asked for the bill for our drinks and left. All set with this place. read more

This was our first time trying this restaurant. We were looking for something casual with outdoor seating and a variety of food choices for our family of 4. We took a table at the edge of the deck. Storm clouds rolled in so we moved over one table. Then the sky opened up and it poured sideways. Everyone seated outside ran inside. We were now at our third table. Though all this, the staff was wonderfully patient, helpful and flexible. They handled it beautifully and our food was delivered fresh, hot and delicious. Friendly staff, good food, great atmosphere inside and out. We will be sure to come back next time we are in Alexandria Bay. read more
