This came up as one of the top rated consignment shops in Asheville when I began to plan a visit there. It is located outside of the downtown Asheville not far from the plaza with Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. The shop has its own parking lot - not a lot of spaces but there were enough when I came about an hour before closing. The shop is divided out into athletic/sports attire in the front room before you enter the main shop, tops and bottoms in the front by the window, jackets in the far right back corner, and shoes in the far left back area. The owner greeted us when we came in and told us to check the tags on items, as some were marked down further. She has a board of tag colors that indicate what is not marked down, 20% off, 30% off, and 40% off. I found a Saint James Breton top which was $15 marked down 30% off. (Normally these retail for $120+ new) It did have stitches coming out of the neck hem but it's easy to replace. A great find! Brands range from Eileen Fisher to some older ones - the demographic here feels more like for women who are 30+ but there are great finds here if you look through the racks. There's a cute poodle you may seen walking around the shop named Rosie. She's the owner's dog and is very friendly. read more

I had a good experience here. I was picking up prom flowers across the street at Merimon Florist and it just so happened that I saw a prom dress hanging outside this business that caught my eye. It was on sale and in my size so I asked to try it on. The owner was nice and she showed me a fitting room. It was w great fit and exactly what I needed for my adult prom event. She also helped me find multiple matching accessories and worked with me on the price to fit my budget. I was able to get an entire outfit here and a matching tie for my date. Only 4/5 stars because she did not follow the mask mandate, as other reviewers did note. This is correct. Otherwise w good experience. read more

What a pleasant, serendipitous find of a vintage & on trend consignment shop. I checked out "Clothes Encounters" along with a few other vintage stores on a whim during a recent visit to Asheville and serendipitously stumbled upon a great pair of boots that I tried on and they fit like a glove - a pair of Camper knee high leather boots in GREAT condition that was less half it's original retail price, so I bought them on the spot. The owner, Ayelet, was a delight to talk to and I left the store feeling like I got a great deal and made a friend:-) The store is a short trip - by car, bus, bike or walking- from downtown Asheville and highly recommend stopping by when in town. In the five years since I wrote that positive review, things have changed dramatically at Clothes Encounters. This Spring I dropped off my winter boots to be repaired as I have done in the past. As weeks went by and I heard nothing, I phoned Clothes Encounters. They had sold my boots, kept my $20 cash deposit for the repair, and never got the boots repaired at all. I am stunned. The store itself was nice but the women working was pretty meh. When I enter a store I expect to get greeted especially if the person working isn't really doing anything but sitting. Anyways, we got in the store (tbh I didn't even realize someone was working bc it was so quiet) and we looked around; nice store as I said and then another women entered and got greeted very nicely with a smile and a hru? just felt it was odd. Then when we were leaving we said "thank you" and the lady said nothing! Honestly ruins the mood, but the whole thing itself was meh. read more

I used to shop this store often. Felt it was a little overpriced, but for great merchandise. I do agree that the customer service was horrible. It felt like they were intentionally trying to avoid customers. Have only shopped in there twice since the ownership changed, and the store is overcrowded with stuff. Feels more like a thrift store with all the junk in there. Not very clean and very disorganized. Still not friendly. Don't shop there any longer. Some cute clothes but mostly only sizes S/M/L, and pricing doesn't always seem to reflect the actual quality of the individual pieces. They stock very few articles in XL--basically nothing past a size 10. To put that in perspective, 68% of American women wear a size 14 or larger. Additionally, none of the three women working here were wearing a mask in spite of the citywide mandate. read more

On a recent Saturday I stopped in to Clothes Encounters. Based on the store's reviews, I was excited to explore. Unfortunately, I was appalled at the lack of common courtesy and lack of customer service. The older woman behind the counter did not speak, greet, or ask if she could be of assistance. I found the clothes to be tired and over priced. It appeared the store was selling the last of the winter items. What a disappointment in terms of selection and customer service. The only bright spot in the trip was the large grey poodle lounging inside the front door. Perhaps this store needs a few lessons in professionalism and common courtesy.
