My honest opinion - I liked the atmosphere in Ichiban much better - a bit nicer and spacier. But, when it came down to the sushi itself, I'd say I liked Cloud 9 better. One of the best sushi places I've ever been and I've never had issues with my orders, wait time can be a while depending on when you arrive as it's a very popular area and there's bars next door and the space is very small but they do the best with what they've got. Went on a Monday night and it was packed. I took a girl there for a second date and we got seated by the window next to another couple. The seats are SO close together, you're practically at the same table as the other party. My date started talking about an uncomfortable date she went on followed by a story of how her ex threw a vase of roses during a nasty Valentine's fight. I could sense the couple next to us squirming in their seats. Staff is super friendly and the food is amazing. Edamame and Sapporo as an appetizer, because we know how to do it. Also ordered the Tutuna roll with tuna and asparagus (kinda fell apart but it was still good). Definitely recommend. read more

On a cold, windy, half snow\half rain kind of night we made the trek to cloud 9. Normally I wouldn't prefix a review about food with the weather, but every single time the door opened all of those things came sweeping in, which is pretty distracting. My first impression was how tiny the place is, and how the number of people packed in like sardines must be some kind of fire code violation. There were 3 open seats at the bar which at first seemed like a quick way out of standing in the aforementioned doorway for forever waiting on a table. I took the awkward corner seat with my woman on the left, a buddy on the right. That was great until we realized that anyone else wanting to enter\exit that section of bar or the surrounding tables meant said woman had to get up, move into the aisle, wait for them to get situated and then return. That's pretty awesome, and totally allows one to really enjoy the dining experience. Not really worth fighting, though. The chairs at the bar are made of metal. They're plenty sturdy and wouldn't actually be outright uncomfortable except that it was so cold that we all left with numb butts. And again, every time the door opened we were accosted by the elements, thereby removing any warmth that had been stockpiled. That's right, we were sitting on heat sinks. Still, not worth a fight. The service was almost non-existent. But I'm having a hard time holding it against the workers as there were like 60 people crammed into this place and only 3 of them there to handle everything from seating people to delivering drinks. It took 10 minutes to get an order sheet. This is annoying, but not worth a fight. Then the server brought us our beer. The bottle was cold, but the beer was warm. It obviously had been in the cooler, just not long enough. Now I'm considering sending them back... but the poor worker bees just look so slammed and it would take 20 minutes anyway. We drank the semi-warm beer as I muttered to myself, "Surely the food will make up for this." The sushi came out mercifully fast. Mine came without wasabi or ginger (mission critical items, imho) and we were missing any form of utensils. After frantic waving and yelling for a few minutes to no avail, we stole utensils from a nearby table. Just getting to the table to lift some chopsticks was a Tolkien worthy journey thanks to how crowded the place was. I'm too hungry to fight at this point. Must eat sushi. And we did. And it was all very pleasant. It was presented nicely (even if missing a couple items) and was all delicious. But, I can't say as there was anything outright exemplary or outstanding. All great, but not memorable. The bill came and it may have been the highlight. The half price part is pretty awesome even if it is just cheesy marketing. And it fit the obviously half price service and venue. Also, in case you're feeling clever: the half price deal only works on dine in... not carry out. Now, I will say that we were there at dinner time. I love the fact that they're open ridiculously late (even on Sundays) so I'll probably be back under different circumstances. But it won't be for an outright dinner. No single thing was worth battling the staff. But the sum of a bunch of small things starts to get pretty hard to ignore. And an angry woman sitting next to you talking about another sushi joint 3 doors up that doesn't have these issues is impossible to ignore. We walked back out into the cold and took a right. We walked past Ichiban which had spacious, open tables and a sign out front that read: Half Price Sushi! We shall see....... read more

It is always happy hour at Cloud Nine - dine-in sushi is always half priced. It's best to get there early or you'll be waiting for a while. Especially after midnight. The rolls are all really good so be adventurous and try something new. We always get the shrimp shumai, salad with ginger dressing, miso soup then on to sushi. I went for the first time last weekend. The atmosphere and cleanliness of the place was not impressive but I was going with friends who suggested it. If it were just me, I would have passed based on those facts alone. I will note, that for the place being so busy, we were seated quickly which was appreciated. As for the food, my husband and I got the CA roll, AAA Roll, and a Crab and Asparagus roll. The part that was a bit off putting for me is that the food wasn't as crisp and fresh as I like sushi to feel. It was a bit "room temperature." I have actually been coming to this establishment for years before the pandemic. My fiancé and I are still weary about eating in so we deiced to get takeout. The first red flag I experienced was that once the to go orders were filled, they would sit them at this table inside, basically baking in the sun by a window until someone picked them up. Other sushi establishments have put the sushi orders in a refrigerator upon pickup. The food tasted ok. Again, the tuna seemed off to me. Nothing worrisome at the time. I have had plenty of sushi from other places to know what it should taste like. I didn't even finish the roll because I knew something wasn't right. However, 3 hours later, I had some of the worst food poisoning ever. My stomach is still not right and this establishment has ruined my sushi experience from now on. We like to sit at the bar so that we can watch the rolls be made while we wait for our food and eat. The beer selection isn't great, but there are some okay choices. I really like the shrimp shumai to start. There are a couple of tables to eat outside, and depending on the time you go in the evening, you may have a wait. The food is solid and good for a quick sushi fix, which happens often. I've probably tried upwards of 15 of their rolls and all have been good. Stopped by during an epic karaoke night at Million's to grab my favorite roll, aka the Phoenix. It was great and the service was very fast. Our group chatted with the sushi chef behind the counter and he was friendly and funny. I am glad to see that things are still going well here. Your go to place for fresh sushi on a budget in Cincy! I've been here several times over the years and it's always consistent. I get something different every time and it's always good. You can make your own roll or choose one of the specialty rolls. At half price I usually get two rolls but if you're with a group you can get several to share. My wife and I decided to try both "half price sushi every day" restaurants in Mt. Lookout Square, Ichiban and Cloud 9. Bottom Line: Both were fine, but we both strongly prefered Cloud 9. Cloud 9 Wins: Sushi Rolls : selection: Ichiban has a limited amount of Sushi available at "half price". Those rolls are smaller and have less premium ingredients than equally priced Cloud 9 rolls. Sushi Rolls : flavor: Admitted, this is literally a matter of taste, but the eel sauce at Ichiban tasted more of LaChoy soy sauce, while Cloud 9's was considerably sweeter and more complex. My wife had only had Kroger Sushi prior to these visits, and she (and I) thought Ichiban's California Roll tasted just like Kroger's. That is a huge loss. Cloud 9's California roll was bigger, tastier. That was true in general, actually. Happy Hour: Ichiban had one fru fru drink and half price domestics. Cloud 9 had half off everything, including premium Japanese imports. Another huge Ichiban loss in our book. Cloud 9 loses: Atmosphere - Unless you're into the whole eating close to strangers thing, Ichiban has it all over Cloud 9 in atmosphere, with real tables and boothes and lots more of them. Service - We went to both on a Wednesday evening, we were served and out of Ichiban in less than half the time we were in and out of Cloud 9. Bottom line: It's all about the food, Cloud 9 is our first choice for Sushi if we don't feel like driving to Kentucky for Jo An or Matsuya. read more

Seriously. Why have you guys not told me about this place before? I came here one night after a lame birthday party with some friends. THIS was the highlight of our night. I'm really very impressed with the sushi itself. It was after midnight and it was just as fresh and delicious as I would expect it to be at any other time of the day. I only tried one roll, so I can't comment much on the variety (I did sneak a bite of my friend's Sunday Morning Roll- yum) but the fact that it's half price is enough incentive for me to return. Came here for date night with the lady after the wait at Dancing Wasabi was 45 minutes. This was a solid choice. The inside is kind of shabby though, weird stuff on the wall, odd seats and mismatched furniture. One thing I will say is be prepared for lots of college aged kids, not a bad thing but also not my scene. This place was packed but our waiter quickly came over and got our drink orders. We ended up getting edamame and pork dumplings for apps and 6 rolls of sushi along with a large beer and two glasses of wine for $65. Great deal. Rolls were large and in charge as well as delish. Edamame was covered in salt, just the way I like it. Beers were cold and wine was flowing (plus for me). Count me in for a repeat visit. read more
