From my personal…read moreexperience, I learned that my Pilates instructor was wrongfully terminated following an incident with another member named Ed Pacelli. During a class, Ed made an extremely inappropriate, racially charged "joke" about hanging African American people directed toward our African American instructor. His own wife tried to stop him, left the room embarrassed, and he still went ahead with it. What disturbed me even more was how the situation was handled. Instead of supporting the instructor who simply asked for him to be removed from her class because of how unsafe and uncomfortable the comment made her feel management chose to side with Ed, reportedly because he's been a member for six years. From my point of view, that choice spoke volumes. As a minority woman, I cannot support a place where staff and clients of color can be exposed to racist comments and then left unprotected. In today's political climate, where safety and respect should be the bare minimum, it's heartbreaking to see an establishment so willing to turn a blind eye. I refuse to spend my time or money somewhere that tolerates behavior like this.

Your first class is free so you can try it out without having to pay. Most of the classes are 90 minutes but some are only an hour if you're looking for something shorter. Single classes are $18 each but if you purchase packages online, you save 5%. In addition, they also offer student/senior deals on TOP of that so it truly pays to book online! My 6-class package came out to $68. My only complaint is that on hot days, it gets HOT in there. I've done hot yoga before, but this is a little different: it's just stuffy, humid, and uncomfortable. I'm not sure if they don't have A/C or just choose not to use it but if you're planning on going in the summer, dress lightly and bring a headband and towel. The Ramsey location has an overhead fan. They also have a brand new GORGEOUS location in Chestnut Ridge, although the air situation is comparable (and no overhead fan). It's also next door to a coffee shop and the walls are VERY thin, however, the coffee is great!

The latter is evident in not only the way they guide you, but the way they can move their bodies. It's so inspirational. I'm sure the rest of the teachers are no different. Recently they've decided to add a Pilates class, taught by the fabulous Ms. Anjali and I couldn't be happier! While this is a yoga studio, I think it was such a phenomenal idea to introduce Pilates into the weekly schedule. I'm crossing my fingers that in the near future I'll see this class offered more than once a week!

The beach is very clean, with fine grain sand. They have green flags posted, which indicate designated areas where you can swim. Lifeguards are on duty. There are seagulls and other birds that hang around, but they won't bother you, even if you're eating. They will eat food that's left unattended and out in the open. Police rovers patrol the beach so I think rowdiness is discouraged. One party next to us was playing music on a speaker, but otherwise it was fairly quiet, except for the crashing waves of course. Lots of free nearby parking, but I imagine it fills up quickly on busy days.

This is what Nanuet Lake should have been like all along... no thanks whatsoever to my parents who thought this was some tough love version of Shangri La, albeit minus the all consuming bliss one often finds in paradise. I kid about my parents (almost) and am happy to bestow five easy stars for a childhood reclaimed. I still hate snakes.

An incident that could have ruined my day only ended up costing me twenty minutes (spent in friendly cycling chat) and a lot less money than an Uber ride home. This is how well they treated me even though I don't live locally, didn't have a prior relationship with them, and was not a prospective repeat customer. Susana is a very caring, seasoned, and knowledgeable instructor. Bergen County is lucky to have such a compassionate instructor in the area. My personal experiences with her classes have only been extremely positive ones. She targets each area of the body making excellent use of all the available equipment while still managing a group class environment. I have seen first hand how she demonstrates new exercises to the class. She helps clients with form and is making sure exercises are being completed properly and more importantly safely. Lots of love for this place! I have very minimal experience with pilates, not big on exercise as a youth and that definitely holds true now. I took a few classes with Denise and Katie, such as the Reformer Flow 1.0 and a Cardio Sculpt, and they are amazing! Denise will walk you through the class, with your breathing technique and what you would be most comfortable with while still getting the benefits of your exercise. Very easy to book a class also, since they have their schedule accessible online as well as on an app that you can download onto your phone. read more

I've heard so much hype about Orange Theory over the past few years. I had to kill my curiosity and give it a try myself. SIGNING UP: The Hackensack location offers an intro class at $12 for first-timers. It's only free for specific locations. I signed up on the website and chose a 12pm class on a Friday. Keep in mind that they would like you to arrive around 30 minutes prior to the start time just so they can give you a mini "orientation". On the day of my class, I was greeted by one of the front desk employees, Jackie. She was enthusiastic, informative, and overall a pleasure to speak with. She explained what I would expect out of the class, gave me a tour of the studio, and went over my medical history/consent forms. WHAT IS ORANGE THEORY?: To sum OT up in a nutshell, it's basically a fitness studio that offers one hour group fitness classes, specifically two types: a HIIT-based one and a strength training one. I've only tried the HIIT one, so I can't speak on the other. Each class is led by a coach who instructs and guides you on the workout for the full hour. We rotate between three stations: treadmills, rower machines, and free weights/body weight exercises (planks, bicep curls, squats, lunges, etc.). The workouts change daily so there's always a new challenge. Everyone wears a heart monitor that the studio provides so we can track our heart rate. The monitors are synced up with each machine and on a giant screen so we can actually see how fast or slow we're going as well as everyone else's. There are different "zones" of heart rates, with each one representing the percentage of your maximum HR. For most of the workout, you want to try to stay in the ORANGE zone, which is 84-91% of your max HR. MY EXPERIENCE: Jeff was my coach. To put it simply, he was awesome. He had great energy, gave enough personal attention to everyone in class, and was encouraging the whole time. He also had a fire playlist, so that helped a lot haha. The other members were very friendly and welcoming. No judgment here- everyone came from varying level of fitness backgrounds, all shapes and sizes, and all ages. They have a strong sense of community, which is always nice in a fitness environment. I really enjoyed the class and I'm actually surprised at how much fun I was having. I'm not really into HIIT or cardio classes so this was a nice change from my usual weight lifting. I liked how I was able to see my heart rate and how hard I was working. After the class, Jackie followed up with me about how I felt and how I did. You're able to see your "stats" after every workout, like when and how fast your heart rate was changing and calories burned. She explained to me the different membership options and she wasn't pushy at all. Their memberships come in either a package of 4, 8, or unlimited classes each month. FINAL THOUGHTS: Although I had a positive experience, I decided not to sign up. Why? It doesn't exactly fit into my current fitness routine/goals. I'm a dancer and I also lift weights 4-5 times a week. I don't see myself taking their classes that often. At most, I might take a class twice a month, or maybe 3. I think their classes are motivating and challenging, but aren't my cup of tea. I prefer a gym floor with dumbbells, barbells, squat racks, benches, and machines... they don't have that here. Orange Theory is great for getting your cardio in and building your endurance, but I don't recommend it for those who really want to build more muscle, gain strength, and hit higher PRs. Last but not least, I think the prices are a little outrageous. $89/month for 4 classes, $189/month for unlimited, AND $100 for the heart rate monitor is not really worth it to me... Regardless of your fitness goals and experience, I still think taking an intro class is worth a try. If you like it and don't want to sign up for a membership, it's $28 for a drop-in rate + $10 for the heart rate monitor rental.
