Went there on a Saturday... they had six employees running around. There was absolutely no order or reason to how they were assisting customers. There was no sense of courtesy from any employee and I, among others, waited over and an hour and a half before leaving out of frustration. When calling out names, the employees were not even being loud, with the dogs and cats barking, its no wonder how people cannot hear their names. Its like the girls were purposely trying to not have to interact with the customers. I noticed a lady asking the employees questions and she reported that the girl was giving her an attitude. It really did seem that way. I had gotten so anxious waiting and feeling unwelcomed that I had a panic attack and left before they even called my name. Got in at 2:25 and left at 3:55. It sucks to see the employees not care about others and the animals. I was there to adopt!! I hope they work on management amd customer servive because it was horrible. Ask anyone who went there today. read more

I had a huge situation with the re-location of an entire feline colony. I cared for this group of felines within the large colony ( i was told this was a 20 year rotating colony) since Covid. I never missed a day to care for them. Not one.I found them malnourished, in foul living conditions and ill. Fast forward to the current time and the property these cats have always lived on, was sold and the new owner wanted the animals off his Property. Now i had spoken to every animal care facility in charlotte and surrounding areas about this colony at least one or More times. All of them- finally i called animal control and had to go about the call as a " safety issue" ( as I had been directed by previous animal care and control dispatchers) .... I was not willing to allow anything to happen to these animal's. I humbly asked for their help. I was desperate. From the initial officer right on to the front office manager and back office staff the entire place are full of professionals, people that care about the animals, and they helped me take a serious situation and turn it into a good situation. Many of the cats have been fixed, micro chipped, and relocated. None of this would've been possible if it wasn't for the staff of the Animal care Control facility here in Charlotte! They helped me save many many felines LIVES! read more

While I was away in Italy, my wife and daughter conspired together and brought home our new cat. We've been without a male cat in our home for the last four years since Mister Bean passed. Now we have Prince Harry, a tabby. He was part of a litter of cats that was turned in and after he passed all his exams and had a spaying, he's ready to go home. My daughter picked him and named him. He's still settling in to our home. He immediately charmed our two female dogs but the three cats are still warming to him. Wonderful experience adopting from here. Chaos, but an organized chaos. And at the end of it, we have this new life to live with us! I'm really glad to have him with us, but really, people need to be doing better at spaying and neutering their pets. If I could give zero stars I would. The absolute WORST customer service I have ever dealt with in my life. We came in and to drop off a dog we found roaming in the street and it took 3 hours to check him in. The people who work here DON'T WORK. Absolutely horrible, lazy and rude staff. They told us to check in online which we did, and they skipped us to help other people which took hours. The lady at the desk had the audacity to hand me the chip scanner and tell me to "do it myself" as if I knew how to use something like it was my job. I asked her to do it and she said no and said "I'll explain to you how to do it" yet the other staff next to her scanned another lost dog, since she knew that was her job. It was absolutely ridiculous. At this point I was very upset at how awful the customer service was and she proceeded to say "oh you mad?" I said "yes" and she said "good". How can you all expect people to do the right thing when the staff you have is slow, lazy, rude and doesn't even follow the own rules they set? Unfortunately, this makes people not want to do the right thing and help animals. I will never come here again and tell everyone what an awful experience we had when just trying to help a lost dog. read more

Do not take animals here. They are extremely insensitive, and allow these animals to sit in their feces. The workers were pressuring us into euthanizeation, disregarding the fact of our distress. They called us to let us know about our animals arrival and its "critical condition" with no further explanation. When we called back, it took 100 calls just for them to not give us clarity. They had also told us that if we did not come and pick up the cat or take it to a vet immediately they were going to euthanize it without permission, also in regards to the fact it had only been there for a couple of hours. They do not care about these animals. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMALS HERE. I adopted a cat here a month ago, my kitty has an upper respiratory infection. According to the medical records it's been a reoccurring thing. This is defiantly due to how filthy this place is. And why they would sell a sick cat without treatment is beyond me. Then I take my cat in to get neutered because all the papers that came with the cat said he was MALE. (I did not want to bring her here again at all but I would have been fined if I didn't?) Come to find out the day of surgery they tell me my cat is in fact a female... How is it that my cat has seen the vet there multiple times before adoption and they can't tell the gender of a cat??? That is absolutely absurd and I would not trust the vets care there AT ALL. All the paperwork Ive been given has different cats names at the top of it, therefore I can tell this place has no organization whatsoever. Very disappointed. I will be taking her else where to get treated for this URI and I will be telling everyone how poorly this place is ran and how the vet there lacks common sense. read more

Lousy experience with this place. I went in to donate two large bags of rabbit food as my rabbit recently passed away. There were 4 people sitting at the help counter. No one was in line in front of me. I walked up to the counter and one of the four looked at me, not acknowledging me, and immediately got up and left from the counter. That left one gentleman that looked older and like he was in charge and two younger females there were both playing on their phones. As I approached the man, another employee walked over and stepped directly in front of me to ask the man a question. He got up and walked out with her, not acknowledging me. This left the two young ladies on their phones. I stood at the counter for a few minutes. One never looked up from her phone and the other looked up multiple times but looked everywhere but at me avoiding eye contact. After standing there, unacknowledged for almost five minutes, I asked the two girls if either of them could help me. The one never looked up from her phone and the other said "She will help you when she gets back". I turned and left with my bags of food. It will be dumped out in the woods of my backyard for the wild rabbits. Glad that I was not there to adopt as that would have been one more animal left behind because of human incompetence. read more

The staff is very nice especially for all they have to do. It was busy but they make sure to help. As for the animals, shelters are sad. Seeing them locked up with nothing. I know the staff is doing it's best and do what they can. But overall my family and I are sooo happy we found the perfect pet for us and I would always recommend adopting at a shelter to give one of these special pets a chance to have a happy ever after read more

The staff for the most part here are very kind, however we adopted a cat from here not too long ago. She had a preexisting medical condition they did not disclose. When we took her to the vet, they informed us she needed a very costly surgery. We called CMPD animal care & control to ask about funds for this since her condition wasn't disclosed. They said unfortunately they don't have funds right now, but the only way she could get her surgery is if she was surrendered. We made the incredibly hard decision to surrender her, under the impression she would be getting the care and surgery she needed to no longer be in pain. Come to find out, they put her up for adoption immediately (did not disclose her condition on the website either) and say they do not provide the surgery she needs. This is heartbreaking as we were told she would get the surgery she needed to no longer be in pain. And now we learn that isn't the case and her new owners may not be aware of her condition either, and cause this to happen to her, or another pet again. I don't recommend adopting from here. read more

If you really want to make a difference in animals' lives, please come here! Animal Control desperately needs loving individuals to re-home all types of animals. Non-profit rescues are selective (I actually saw volunteers from local non-profits at animal control hand selecting which animals were good enough to take), but all animals deserve a chance at happiness regardless of where they land. Animal Control is no frills, but I believe they are doing the absolute best they can. They were teeming with dogs, cats, and interested humans of all kinds (lost dogs, adoptions, reclaiming) on a Sunday afternoon. They let us look at the many kitties needing adoption before letting us have private room sessions with a few to find our match. We fell in love with a two year old tabby, and the staff/volunteers were SO grateful that we were 1) adopting an adult cat and 2) creating space for another animal to go up for adoption. In addition, the adoption fee was literally nothing. They requested a donation, which I happily gave, but otherwise I was free to take my new girl home. I wish I could go back and adopt more!! read more

I love their new program for staycations for the dogs! I can not commit to a dog full time, but I often have long weekends when I am home and I am so active it's nice to get a dog out for long walks and playtime! It was no hassle and easy process. I adopted a 4 year old chocolate Lab on January 14, 2019. Imagine my surprise when my spayed dog went into heat last week! Took her to my vet and it was confirmed she was never spayed, still has a uterus and definitely was in heat. ($57 vet appointment). So I've booked her appointment to be spayed (cost estimate is $400). Ruined carpet and bedding (lots of blood). The fact that I feel like an irresponsible owner as I've taken her out in public confident that she was spayed when she wasn't (the guilt). There is also the stress of making sure she doesn't come in contact with any male dog for the next month. I contacted CMPD Animal Care and Control (was only able to leave a voicemail) and of course they have not responded. Love my dog, but I wasn't prepared for this. If you adopt a "spayed" dog from here you might want to have it confirmed by an independent vet. read more

Any "kill" shelter is going to get bad publicity but until I started volunteering as a foster, I had no idea what this place did for animals. They take in every stray animal you can imagine from raccoons to even horses. Strays often take extensive rehab and CMPD takes great care in getting these animals ready to be adopted. From behavior issues to health issues CMPD works hard to get these animals ready. As you walk the adoption kennels you will notice labels on them about whether they are House broken, crate trained ect. Each dog is carefully reviewed before they are deemed adoption ready. They have an extensive network of fosters who work with the dogs until they are healthy enough or adapted enough for adoption. (They always need more volunteers.) If you are looking to adopt a pet or for volunteer opportunities, this is a great organization to work with. read more

I am beyond impressed with the shelter! I began fostering over a year ago and have learned a lot about how things work behind the scenes. They truly go above and beyond to do all they can. I've seen several practically hopeless cases given EVERYTHING (surgery, meds, care at home by staff, etc) just to give an animal a fighting chance. With limited resources, space, volunteers, and staff - they truly do the best they can. I'm honored to play a very small part as a foster and thankful I chose this shelter to partner with. If I could give no stars I would. It hurts my heart that this place pretends to care for animals. I found two healthy dogs one was micro chipped, I took one to my vet once I found them in hopes of them finding their home. I call them and said countless times if no one claims them I will keep them. I was told I would be "stealing" so they took the dog and their pictures have not been added online or at the shelter. This is a kill shelter! I've called countless times, messaged to adopt they belong together. No one knows anything. This is a horrible place do not do business. I wish I could shut this place down and find homes for theses animals bs putting 8mon healthy dogs down. Their in humane I hate this place. Charleston animal society would never do this. Well lets see, I had one of them refer to me as the "crazy blonde" to a police officer friend of mine because I was upset they showed up at my job and I was upset about my dog. I got fined $50 for "leash law" even though I had a leash on my dog but it snapped. I have a friend who does dog rescues and they wouldnt even let her in to see a dog. She also told me the dogs they capture are worth more to them dead then alive cause they sell their remains to a horse feed place. I was part of a group trying to rescue a dog they had and they were determined not to let this dog be adopted so we finally got someone to lie and say it was their dog that escape their fence. **Please also know if you take your dog there cause you cant keep it anymore, consider it dead with 48 hours. They will not try to adopt it out because once you hand it to them its their property and they put it down. Please tell people to take dogs to rescues because they take an oath to do whatever to save an animals life and they will not put it down.*** read more

Dont ever expect Mecklenburg Animal Control to actually help. They will find ways to directly have to do anything. It takes away from there time to take pictures at fundraisers or charities. I read they like to put down dogs, well they wont do anything about my nuisance neighbor dog non stop annoying continuous barking. 311 to animal control no help. Unfortunately, they are not a no-kill shelter, so if you need to rehome your pet PLEASE do it through a reputable rescue. That being said, the employees and volunteers at Animal Control truly care about the animals and they use every last resource they have to get their animals healthy and adopted. I adopted my tiny chihuahua from them 3 years ago and have recently fostered two amazing pit bulls. The staff has always been accommodating to the needs of the dogs and are genuinely excited for them when they are adopted and find great homes. Volunteers are an essential part of helping as many animals as possible. The place has wonderful staff. When My husband & I went, as soon as i walked in we were asked what we wanted to see & we were then escorted to see them & will let you walk around & see them at your own pace. Once you decide they will put you in a room with the animal you choose. Once you're happy with what you choose to adopt Its the easiest paperwork process ever. Wasn't expensive how I thought it would be. I payed about $115 - $130 for my dog & for my kitten it was however much you want to give. I got them both the same day!! They're BFF's!! read more

I volunteer at the shelter. The staff who work there are caring and committed to these animals. They do a lot for a lot of animals on a shoestring budget. And unlike a rescue, as a public facility, they have to take in every animal. They do not get to select who they want. Please support the shelter and adopt a pet who needs a home. read more

PLEASE help get the word out about this shelter!!! They deleted my friend's post from Facebook so, I'm hitting every other site I can. My friend's dog got out of their yard on Saturday 8/10/13. The family posted fliers and checked with them daily. Sadly, her collar came off and was found across the road. The family found out the shelter got the dog 08/13/13. Instead of waiting the 3 days they euthanized her immediately saying "We thought she was 11 (old)". She was 3 years old and a happy friendly dog. Regardless the dog SHOULD HAVE BEEN HELD!!! The family was checking in every day. The family including 4 year old daughter is devastated. They should be held accountable!!! read more

I just adopted a new family member, Ranger, from this shelter. They were very helpful and super nice. One mishap occurred with the adoption, but that was because Ranger had kennel cough that they were trying to take care of, and wanted to make sure he was healthy before getting neutered. What is keeping me from giving five stars is that while I walked back to my car, some lady I hadn't seen there before drug Ranger thru the doorway to get to his kennel (he didn't want to go). I have since been back, and she isn't there anymore. Yes, this is a "kill shelter", but I put it this way, I have been in there numerous times, and have seen a lot of the same dogs in there. I honestly believe they truly try to save as many dogs as possible. The staff was very informative, helpful, and caring. Same goes for the vets as well :) I would definitley recommend this shelter to anyone looking for a new furry family member. They also adopt out bunnies, hamsters, guinea pigs, chickens, etc! I am very disheartened with the shelter I fostered the second dog I now have knowing he had heartworms I was told they would provide all the treatment and I could adopt him at the end of his heartworm treatment after about six weeks with me the medication that they had given me had caused him seizures I was never warned that this could be a side effect however when doing research and speaking to other vets it appears this is very common so when I contacted the shelter to let them know the dog I was fostering was having seizures they said there's really nothing they could do for me except for give me a voucher so I took him to animal Long Hospital where they started him on seizure medication after about three weeks he had seven seizures in less than 48 hours and we had to rush him to the emergency room or I was billed almost $600 for one day and two nights when I reached out to the shelter to ask them for help because I was fostering this animal they told me that they had already made out the paperwork when I had told them that he was having seizures and that now I had technically adopted him I told him that I never authorized an adoption and I never signed for paperwork. More than writing a bad review what I would like is for someone to help me if possible or direct me tell who I could talk to so they could help me take care of this issue it's very disheartening this is literally more than half my rent. At the end of the day all I want is for this dog to be happy and healthy and the response I got was that if I don't want him I could bring them back but honestly I feel like if that's the attitude they have towards the dog then I don't even feel comfortable bringing him to that shelter read more

On 10-4-2016 I witnessed a disservice to a citizen & three (possibly four) of his pets, Ghost, Sandman & Pup. His dogs had been picked up & were at the end of the holding period, the citizen had brought what money he had. Rather than offering to work with the man, the shelter employee (in front of other shelter employees & citizens) loudly spoke of how much money he owed as if he could conjure up more until the man who had gotten a ride with someone else in an effort to retrieve his pets had to turn around & quietly walk out, no doubt broken, leaving his dogs to be killed. The shelter employee put on a gross show of control & power. Those actions benefit no citizen & no animal. read more
