Better evaluation of the dogs and cats under their care. And how they interact with other of their species.

I arrived at 6:45 and was third in line. If paperwork is done before, it's quick. However, some options are offered without explanation. Since it's online and doesn't have explanation, I didn't select the $109 extra. I did add IV fluids, which I know helps the healing process. I also opted for sedatives, since the body heals faster when it's not in pain and rest is possible. The incision is outstanding. It's small and aligned perfectly. I'm impressed! I was told to expect a call between 1 and 3. If nobody called I was told to show up at 3. I was getting worried with no call. What if something happened? I did select DNR. I headed to pick her up, a bit anxious. I was early, but soon other people, who I saw drop their pet off in the morning, were there and hadn't received a call either. That was a relief. Whew. I waited and they slowly began to bring the pets out, after a vet came out and gave a helpful post-op care speech. At 3:45 my little one came out, looking great. It's been a couple days. She's reading well and healing great. I give high marks. I pulled one star for the worry. A call would have been so appreciated. An "out of surgery and doing well" call would have been such a relief. I was so worried that they were going to tell me something bad happened. Pricing is reasonable, staff is polite, and the place is clean. Parking is ample too.

This is not about being disappointed about not getting a dog through the adoption process as other…read morereviewers here have stated. It is about what led to that. Three of us went independently to see one dog we saw in the 'coming soon' category. We called on a Friday and were told he was at the groomer and would be available to be seen the next day, so all of us went independently to meet the dog. We were told up front there was a lot of interest in this particular dog which we understood. Each one of us had been told that the dog was to undergo a full exam and would be neutered but not yet on the schedule for that procedure. Once neutered it would take 1 to 2 weeks in order to be moved from coming soon to available, and only once he was officially available would we able to fill out an application. I had been told over the phone by a gentleman I could take a blank application home in order to get it ready ahead of time but when I showed up they said I could not have one. We were all told to call during the time the dog was recovering from the neutering (1-2 weeks) in order to see if he was available yet. This was on a Saturday. By the first of the week, maybe 2 or 3 days later, we all are told (in separate phone calls), "He's been adopted." The photo of the dog had been removed from coming soon, and not transferred to available for adoption. This was a particularly attractive dog. There is a concerning mention of someone within the organization taking him. I don't want to believe that as they stressed how only when the applications were gathered and vetted with references phoned would a decision be made and not to expect a call if you did not get the dog. They emphasized thorough vetting to find the very best home for the dog. We believed them and respected the process. But the outcome was not at all what we expected and certainly not what we were told. The dog had not even been scheduled for exam and neutering when all of us saw him that Saturday, and even if the dog had been neutered it would've still been in recovery. There is something very fishy about this. I will say again, this has nothing to do with not being chosen to take home this dog. This is totally about being misled, and worse--quite possibly someone working there quickly taking the dog for themselves and denying the public some of whom, like us, have donated to this 501c3 over the many years. An element of trust has been taken away by this non-profit after this episode, and the reviews here seem to echo that area of concern.

Thus I was at a loss as to how to bring another bullie into my life after 15 years with Tigre, placed from this rescue. Someone online was still manning their site, and informed me about this rescue out in the desert. So I headed out early one Saturday morning with a friend and a crate, hoping.... The people running this place were SO patient and informative. I spent the entire morning having them bring out a number of candidates. Lots of bullies to visit with, but as I am a "single" bullie mom that works, I really wanted a bullie that was a little mellower (over 2 years old), and also, 100% dog friendly, as Tigre was hit or miss ;)) Overwhelmed by all the bullies, I asked which one they felt would be the best fit, and they both said the same name, at the same time. Its 2 1/2 years later, and (black) Mamba has been the perfect #3 bullie. LOVES seeing other dogs on our walks, and although 60lb of Bullie love, has convinced the smaller neighborhood dogs that he is cool - So fun when he gets all excited and does his fasties to impress ;) Bottom line - I highly recommend this rescue. Yes, their background check was quite a bit higher than I had gone thru in the past (mentioned in the 1 star review which prompted my review today), but it was done for the right reasons.

Swearing "never again" after losing a soul that was by my side every day, they become a part of you. The silence was unbearable, so I reached out to The California Paws rescue again. And Ms Moxie found her way into my heart. The Paws staff really know what they are doing, saying "NO" to my first two choices because they were watching out for me and my specific needs and Moxies forever fit! That's the kind of rescue work that changes lives. Now I have a new love bug who is already spoiled and knows she is home. Roxy would be proud. I gave her 12 years of constant companionship and now Ms Moxie gets the same full-hearted love thanks to the wonderful dedicated staff at The California Paws rescue. We adopted our new dog Jet here and had a positive experience overall. Everyone we met was kind, and it was clear the staff genuinely cares about the animals despite limited resources. Jet was clean when we met him and appears to be in great health. We also appreciated how understanding the adoption coordinator was about allowing a proper meet and greet with our senior dog Gus (15 years old, 14 pounds, and very dog selective), which helped us feel confident in the match. This shelter is very full and many dogs have been waiting a long time (6 months to 2 years). Compared to shelters that get more attention and donations, this location in Desert Hot Springs is less visible and easy to miss, and many dogs are housed outdoors in extreme desert conditions. We only met Jet because we came back multiple times and asked for a full tour. I understand it can be stressful for the dogs, but the reality is many won't be seen otherwise. Jet was not what we planned to adopt (we originally came looking for a small female), but he's a calm 50 pound sweetheart and we couldn't be happier. And if you're not in a position to adopt right now, please consider donating or volunteering, this place truly needs it.
