I lost my amazing dog earlier this month and I was devastated. I was going to give myself time to grieve him but a relative sent me a flyer that showed the shelters were all in the red and overcrowded so I thought at least I could look. I saw this fella immediately but waited, said if he was still at the shelter a few days later I'd go take a look. Well he was so I drove 2 hours to see him. It was love at first sight. He's such a great little dog and opened up the second day. He hit the jackpot with me as I've a huge dog community and he's been surrounded by love from the moment everyone met him. And I hit the jackpot with him . He's a total gem. The employees were extremely nice. The facility didn't leave me depressed. Was a lot cleaner than the other ones although I just looked in the front area and didn't go to the big dog area. The process to adopt Jake, now named Loki, was seamless. Glad I drove the 2 hours to grab him. He's amazing. read more

I fostered 2 kittens who were 5 weeks old. The process was very easy to get them. Yes this is a kill shelter- which is why I believe it's even more important to take an animal from here. Yes it's a riverside county establishment not privately funded so they lack a lot of resources. But the staff being mostly volunteers try as best they can. These animals need you to literally save their life. I would go here again if I was able to adopt. read more

I received my dog. It wasn't as easy as it should be when someone wants to adopt. They were kind to let me take him home for Xmas but had to return to get him spayed. The vet next door does this and they are not that good at communicating where you pet is in the process. There should be a FT liaison that wirks for both facilities. read more

While I appreciate the importance of adopting from shelters, I cannot overlook the issues I witnessed during my visit. I notified a staff member about the filthy kennels who turned around and told me that they do not manage that portion. WTH! It does not take a degree to remove litter filled food and water bowls and tiddy things up. I am giving 3 stars because they are providing a safe place off the streets. My foremost concern revolves around the shelter's practices. CVAC is a kill shelter, and I was disheartened to learn that they euthanize healthy animals simply because they may not be as social. Furthermore, the lack of attention to cleanliness in the kennels is alarming. I've observed feces smeared and stepped on by dogs, and the placement of food and water bowls next to litter boxes is unacceptable. It seems that staff and volunteers need to prioritize maintaining a sanitary environment for the animals. Another significant drawback is the absence of infectious disease screening upon intake. This lack of testing puts both adopted animals and their new families at risk. CVAC charges $12 for the SNAP test, which checks for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), feline leukemia virus (FeLV), and feline heartworm (FHW) and while reasonably inexpensive they do not tell the adopters. While I understand the importance of covering costs, this fee should be included in the adoption process. Do not be alarmed as these can be managed and treated. Some shelters and vets will encourage to use euthanasia which is totally inhumane. FIV cats can live a normal life, while their immune system is weaker they certainly can be managed with nutrition, species appropriate balanced diet, no kibble crap food. FELV cats should only live in a cat household of other FELV positive kitties. Please educate yourselves and be an advocate for these voiceless beings. I hope CVAC addresses these concerns promptly. Animal welfare should be the top priority for any shelter, and I believe improvements in cleanliness and health protocols are crucial for the well-being of the animals and the satisfaction of potential adopters. I also think they should not keep over medicating cats with meds that they are not responding to. They should get a better health exam and go to the root cause and not use ineffective bandaids. We came here yesterday to look for a new kitty since our Dexter passed way last Tuesday. We figured we would check this place out and see what they had as far as cats. As we walked in I was extremely happy that it was very well kept. Very clean place. We were greeted by a very nice lady who directed us to the right direction*the cat area ‍* after we told her we were interested in adopting a cat. Our "policy" is to let the cat choose us not us choose them. They had a nice selection of lovable furry babies for adoption. You are only allowed to see the cats through the glass. After going up and down and looking at all the fabulous cats that were there*if I could I would adopt all of these adorable babies* but I can't so we let the cats check us out. One 4month old grey female tabby was very animated and was trying to love up on my partner through the glass. She caught our eye and after one minute....we decided we would get this beautiful baby girl & spoil the heck out of her. Today we go to pick up "Sabrina" after 3pm. Everyone we came across was very pleasant & you can tell they love our four legged friends. I had friends go there yesterday morning. They were eager to adopt/rescue a dog. They said there were about 8 workers (5 standing in the lobby hanging out chatting). They were the only customers there. They were told that they were allowed to view/visit with ONE dog only (not one at a time)- one for the entire day because they were told the shelter was short staffed. They couldn't even each see a dog. It had to be one dog total. This is a horrible way to shelter animals. The goal should be to be to promote animals being rescued from the shelter/saved from euthanasia & to try and help as many potential adopters out when they show up to the shelter. Please put more effort and concern into helping these dogs/cats get adopted. Limiting people to view only one pet the whole day is ridiculous. read more

Staff was so caring and genuine. I took my new rescue dog on their doggy vacation / adoption and after one week I knew that Sarge was going to be an amazing companion for me. The staff at the shelter set up to have Sarge neutered next door. Very convenient! Sarge was having a hard time coming out of surgery. I am disabled and unable to lift a 110 jobs animal into my van. Three petite ladies lifted him up with the assistance of two body straps and walked him to my van. It is difficult to find that level of service! read more

I adopted a wonderful dog in 2006? It was when the campus was relatively new. They brought the dog out of the kennel to us and we went outside to see how the dog was with us and if course he was excited and hyper and we took in consideration that this dog would need a commitment from us to make sure he was active according to his breed and then when we came back to get him they had him bathed and he was just sooo happy prancing around knowing he was going home. Sadly this summer we made the decision with the advice from the vet that he should get put out if his suffering at 17 1/2 yrs old. I waited about a month and just was looking for another dog and didn't want to wait if there was iI thought would be perfect for our current living situation. I was just sickened by the over populations of the Siberian Husky breeds that it was really difficult to pass by them. One was doing circles out if it mind in the tiny bed while the other one was just staring at him. He was in distress obviously. What are these dogs doing in this climate in such abundance. It's clear that they are there because they are born runners. They are a breed that resembles the wild wolf and a cool looking dog to have hat maybe mark intimidating while beautiful. Until they take off and run. What a horrific ordeal these dogs are suffering in the heat of this desert. Why dint you ship the majority of the one that may be in danger of getting put down to a colder climate. Where they stand a chance of getting a family that can provide a home that gave knowledge of the Characteristics and the room they will need to thrive. Maybe a temporary rescue while put on a list waiting to be adopted while at the same time not subject to lose its mind and be ignored of the severity and obvious suffering that dog is going through at that point. Then I spotted a terrier mix just laying very still in the middle of the big dogs on his side and it looked like his sister was behind him. He was not ready until the day after the shelters special was over. Ok I was there 2 hrs 1 st in line for him. Waiting in the heat. They said regardless if I was first or not if someone else is interested they will do a raffle. A raffle? Something didn't make sense. So I waited and let me tell you that there was not much smiling. Very stern. Like I was being helped by a jail warden. Like I was the bad one. Finally they called my name. I had his leash and collar just in case I was lucky to see him. They said the day before when I saw him that they don't take the dogs out if the kennels didn't you can meet them. Afraid of passing diseases. ? So I Started to get ready to receive the Puppy. At that point I got the word that this dog dies not walk. I won't be needing his leash and collar just then. Also telling me ay the same time he is infested in fleas and ticks. That they treated him but had to wait for next treatment because he was too young. They placed gum in my arms and we got the ..... out of there. He is a bouncy puppy and his parasites are mostly all disappeared! Now I do have To say when after a few days he Was not eating well they did make an exception fir him to be Seen and gave me medicine and he did get better and started to eat. They said that when I got him neutered that I would get $75.00 back however when I looked into the papers I got back from animal Samaritan's states I have a balance of $85.00. No they were very professional and nice at animal Samaritan's and they were there with much support and sincerity when I Had to say goodbye to my dogs I'm hopi G someone might take Notice about so many Huskys that are now in the shelter and maybe have a solution to get them somewhere they might fit in better and not take a chance they come back to the shelter and maybe when handing over a dog to a chance of going to a home after a traumatic life, to crack a Smile and how hard to spruce a dog uo With a quick bath and get the dog ready to hand over. I think maybe they were over crowded and understaffed. Thank you for being there as well but maybe give a high five to the families that are taking their new family member home with best wishes and a smile! Our puppy runs around like crazy now and is very happy! I wish I had got his sister too. I heard she got adopted and hope she got a wonderful home too!!! I don't know how to leave a minus star, but just picked up my dog who got out, someone found her right away and took her to the pound.. it cost $450 to get her back, loaded with ridiculous extra fees, apparently you get punished for bringing her home, most people cannot afford that and would just leave them there for that price, I definitely can't afford it either, but they take advantage that you love your pet.. it definitely discourages anyone from saving their own pet if they get out.. read more

Highly recommended. There are signs all over, asking for patience since there have been major budget cuts and layoff. Despite being understaffed, the staff were still upbeat and friendly and glad to help. The facility is beautiful, and all of the animals seemed content and well cared-for. We took a lot of time wandering the kennels to get a feel for the animals' care. When we spotted a little cream-colored dog of indeterminate origin, we took her to an outdoor 'get to know each other' spot and were smitten by the dog who was to become ours. We completed the paperwork right away, and they took her to Animal Samaritans next door to be spayed the next day. Before we left, we went to pay for her and to buy her license. It was then that they told us that our little Pierogi was marked as a "Mayflower" dog, which meant that she was free. So for $8 licensing, we got a sweet, friendly, spayed little dog who has made our home happier. But even if we'd paid the small fee (about $65), she'd be worth it. read more

I brought my dog here today yo get her shots. They took my debit card information a few days ago and I Noticed this morning they charged me $56 and my appointment was at 3:20 pm. They charged me before I even got there. Then a man came out with a clipboard and asked me a few questions.....how has Jade been? Any vomiting or diarrhea? No. Then he said someone will be out in a few minutes to get Jade. About 10 minutes later they came out and brought her back about 15 minutes later. They gave me her tag and paperwork. When I got home I was looking over the paperwork and seen they charged me another $43.77.???? That's almost $100 for shots. I called them right away and left a message to call me regarding these charges. No call back yet. The paperwork also indicating my dogs weight as 7lbs. I knew my dog weighed more than that, so I weighed her and she is 13lbs 4oz. I am very upset at these additional charges. I won't go back. read more

Super cold place for animals to be kept. The two older ladies just looked at me with a frown while I walked in and the younger lady to the end of the desk kindly greeted me lifting my spirit a bit. Shoutout to her for being a real one. I didn't get names since I'm a bit down that my kitty is lost. The guy walked us through the animals very quick and made me feel like a burden and said "ugh I hate cats" at every kennel he took me to. Been here a couple times now to get my kitten (Kittywampus) shots and to get my Mommy Cat (Sonny) fixed. This clinic is new and clean and is very inexpensive. The shot clinic is convenient and really a good value, little to no waiting especially if you get there right when they open. I did take Sonny in one time to get her ears checked out and I had to wait an hour so if you have an appointment get one first thing in the morning so you do not have to wait. Overall, excellent value and they are well staffed with some compassionate animal lovers. read more

They do their jobs well! I have adopted two animals through them, and they are always there to answer questions and make the adoption process go as needed. I wanted to adopt a kitten who was too young for adoption, so they allowed me to foster him until he was old enough to officially adopt, thereby ensuring that he was being socialized during those first few critical months. I was really impressed, as the litter of kittens he was with would have been just one more that they would have needed to care for. This shelter has cat traps which they lend out to people wanting to catch feral cats to bring in off the street. They also RESPOND to calls when you call about leaving their poor dogs in cars in the desert heat. That is HUGE! The dog runs have indoor-outdoor access, with elevated cots for all the dogs. (contrary to what an earlier reviewer posted) Some of the cats get to be in a cat room, but others have space in smaller cubicles. The black cats SHOULD be placed higher in better lighting so their features are seen better, and then have a better chance of being adopted, but hopefully the staff will catch on to that. The place is clean and well-lit; which is very good for the animals. They WANT to adopt the animals, not euthanize, and recently put 54 dogs on an airplane to be flown to the Northwest where they would be joined with forever families. i set an appointment to look into adopting a dog we drove from Nuevo all the way out here to get greeted so rude. the lady who was helping the customer infront of us seemed irritated already asked if i had and appointed i said yes she walked in and came out and said what are you looking for i was suprised by her attitude and said we were here to adopt a dog preferably a small breed and she then answered with the rudest mood we don't have that only big breed we then asked can we see them and she then asked the lady in back of me if she had an appointment.. we drove an hour to be completely ignored.!! my husband and i got on our car and drove off super upset she could have said it in a nicer way we set up appointments for a reason.!! she was short and had blonde highlights hair wasn't able to get a name very upsetting.!! read more

I love this facility! I love the setup, it's nice and clean and the staff is pretty cool too. I came in originally wanting a white cat (because I couldn't find another black cat as a companion for my other black cat at home) and I came in a day later to adopt and saw the cutest little five year old black male cat sleeping in the window. I asked to see him instead and the bond was instant. The woman that helped me did a fantastic job. She was very helpful and super delightful to talk to! I don't think I'll be getting another cat soon since two is my limit, but I'll definitely recommend(: if you want a quality pet with a great personality, go here. I've just adopted a beautiful pit bull boy. He is absolutely the most loving and playful boy I know. Honestly they treated him very well , he already knew how to sit/stay and Paw! He is friendly with other children and pets! I can tell they put a lot of effort into taking care of these animals. Horrible customer service. We had our eyes set on a dog, we offered to adopt it right on the spot. They told us it wasn't ready for another 4 days. So we came back bright and early. Made sure we were the first ones at the door! We were the first ones who told her we wanted the dog and she went and asked other families if they were interested in adopting the dog even though she told them there was another family ahead of them. I thought it was first come first serve. But that's not the case. The lady who works the adoption process was absolutely rude both times we came. The made us raffle for the dog, and we ended up losing and leaving heartbroken. I'm really disappointed in the way we were treated here, we had high hopes for them. read more

Seriously how could I possibly give a KILL SHELTER any stars at all?? I know it isn't the fault of the shelter itself, but the crappy laws that have to be changed. I have never in all the times I have been there seen a dog with a blanket or bed, I will say the facility has been clean and the workers friendly & helpful. But definitely understaffed. I know they call shelters & rescues when they have a pregnant momma to be, or a new born litter. So it sounds like they do have a heart, but then I know of a dog murdered after they had been informed that a rescue was on the way to pick the dog up. A county office with great customer service and knowledgeable employees... yay!!! Very helpful staff. Went for licenses and happily also left with adopting a rescue puppy. Everyone we worked with was courteous helpful competent and NICE! We didn't wait around or get ignored, did not deal with employees who can't find their butt wit both hands (as can often be the case in a county bureaucracy). It as a pleasant and surprisingly delightful experience! The campus is beautiful and clean, the animals look healthy. They are not a no-kill shelter, no county facility can be. RESCUE HOMELESS PETS!!! And this is a really good place to go to do it. SO LOOK HERE FOR YOUR NEXT PET! read more

Let me start by saying this review is not for how the animals are treated or cared for which seems to be pretty well. The crappy one star review is for their "rules". We believe in adoption and since our family dog had recently passed away we went looking. We found the perfect little dog for my granddaughter but we told we couldn't adopt her on Saturday we had to wait until Monday. We were told they open at 9 am. Perfect! Being there are 8am only to find out they open at 10 SUCKED! But hey a little 6 year old girl really wanted her puppy to help her heal the loss. At 10 the doors open and another customer was mulling over a couple dogs to buy for her sister EVEN though we already knew which one we wanted and made it clear. Since she decided she wanted the same dog it went to a raffle. SERIOUSLY, A RAFFLE! After waiting 2 hours and being the first person there, its not a first come its a raffle! That is the dumbest rule I can think of. You don't walk into a department store and find the last pair of shoes and say, "I want them too we have to raffle for it." Our hunt for the perfect "meant to be" dog will continue but I hope you change your way of doing things! read more
