After a couple of years of seeing it promoted, we decided to check out Tubapalooza for the first time. We attended Tubapalooza 2025! We're glad we did! The staff was welcoming and warm, even on this slightly chilly day. The music brought on the right atmosphere, the vibes were fantastic, and the food came when we needed it the most! We got the camping packet that let's you camp for 2 tonight/3 days, and includes the Tubapalooza, and other tubing options each day. There were a vast selection of campsite options. We were surprised that it wasn't packed (especially the night before Tubapalooza). Our campsite was next to the river, it couldn't have been more ideal. The location was calm and the sounds of the river and nature were soothing, even on the few times when the geese went wild. All in all, if we're still living in Pennsylvania, we plan to return next year! read more

It's a decent run and we did it once before when the water level was below 2.60, and they let you go twice b/c you're only doing half the run. So I've been watching the site for the water level, and only purchased because I saw the water level was above 2.60, but when I get there I'm told they're only running half the course again, despite that the water level was above 2.60. No announcement on the site or on social media. So I feel like I got a bait and switch. I drove 2 hours to get there and I guess I'll call ahead in the future before paying $80. read more

My friend and I planned a girls weekend with Coal Tubin as the main event! We had such a great time that when our trip was over, we paid for a second trip down the River, So worth it!! We hope todo it again do this again next summer we had such a wonderful time! read more

We loved Coal Tubin'! They are super enthusiastic and excited about what they do and the Johnstown area. Spoke with Chad on the phone, and Sean ran our shuttle - both of them can easily convey their excitement into you, too! I look forward to checking back in the future to see how they've grown. I grew up near this area of PA, but never did these types of things growing up. Now they are making it accessible to everyone. We rented two bikes from them for a ride on the Ghost Town Trail. I had a great time on my first float! My boyfriend and I want to make an annual summer tradition of this. We both have "weekends" in the middle of the week, and we loved that it wasn't crowded for our float on a Wednesday. The changing rooms are spacious and the workers explained everything so well. They also provided a rope that kept our tubes together. We paid extra for larger tubes but I think we'd be fine with the standard ones next time. Our float took about an hour and, although we got stuck on a few rocks due to lower water levels, that's not anyone's fault and we enjoyed every minute. Next time, we plan to schedule an earlier shuttle time and make several trips. Perfect day trip for other Pittsburghers -- less than a 2-hour drive and beautiful views. Highly recommend. read more

This was my first experience tubing and it was fun! I'd definitely do it again. When we got in, we first had to sign a waiver. The man who helped us was very nice! They also had written how high the river was running that day, which was helpful. The office also has bathrooms in it. They also have cubbies so that you can leave your things there. We were given options for the kind of tubes we could pick. They had special tubes for an extra $5. We chose the pink Cadillac ones with backing and can holders so we could hold the alcohol we got (from the local Bargain Beer &Pop). We got a very quick safety talk and then took a bus to the river, picked up our tubes and were off! The river was ok...not particularly beautiful but maybe all tubing is like that. The pickup process was a bit confusing. After getting off the river, we waited a bit outside without realizing we had to walk all the way down to the road to get on the pickup bus. There wasn't a sign for a bus or anything, so this was a bit confusing. Overall, good experience. Not 5 stars because there are definitely improvements that can be made. read more

So much fun!!!! About $20 a person but you get to float all day until they close at 6:30pm. They have gear to buy like stickers, shirts, water shoes, etc. There are bathrooms to use along with showers. They have Corn hole and chairs set up outside in case you want to switch it up. Jill, the owner, was SO GREAT! They have their dog Mosley running around too. So friendly! Abby at the front desk check in was wonderful to be with! I recommend this place to everybody! Even with water levels at 2.44 we still had a great time. We had over 20 in our group including teenagers and everyone had fun! The kids requested this be a yearly back to school activity!! My wife and I made the drive from Pittsburgh a few months ago and I'm just getting around to writing the review now... First off... FIND THEM ON FACEBOOK to see if they are still in operation. There has been some building, permit & parking issues that they're dealing with and FaceBook tells the whole story. We went on Memorial day (May 27th) and the water was still running mid to hign from the winter so we didn't have to worry about a dam release. Speaking of 'Dam releases', their page on FB says that even the dam control board isn't helping them out with a water release schedule and hasn't done any releases for river tubers in months. Yes- bring river shoes so you can pull out & relax on shore and not have to worry about walking on sharp rocks. Yes- bring a cooler BUT if you can find one of those nylon covered ones with a shoulder strap- they're ideal. You can either tie it to your own float or get an extra float and put it in the middle. DO NOT TIE yourselves together! If you're wanting to float down together the best idea is to each bring a short section of rope (maybe 4 feet long) and tie it to your own float. When you get to open areas of the river you can grab the ropes on your friends floats and form a floatilla then let them go easily when you need to... If you smoke- be sure to bring a good, stroke Zip Lock type waterproof bag with you for your smokes & lighter! Better yet- go to REI or any other outdoor store and buy a water proof pouch for your stuff. Thank god I didn't trust my basic zip lock bag with my iphone! I missed alot of great pics, but I never would have been able to get them out of a waterlogged phone... And don't forget the basics- sunscreen, sun glasses, maybe a hat. read more

It appears like a lot of the information on this Yelp page is outdated, so hopefully this will help some others! We had a terrific experience last Friday doing the white water tubing adventure. We booked a few weeks in advance online and filled out our waivers in advance so we could make the trip quickly and efficiently. The biggest downside is the amount of time spent at the facility vs the amount of time actually on the river. Our "float time" was at 10A, but we stood around their facility until about 10:45A as we waited for everyone else in our float group to very slowly get changed, buy river shoes, get fitted for helmets, etc. We probably only spent about an hour on the river, which felt like a steep price for us for only an hour in the water, but we did have a lot of fun and enjoyed every worker we came in contact with. We're eager to go back one day to do the lazy river float, as it seems it's more worth the price with less upfront hassle upon arrival. They're also a tad unorganized in the office where you start and end your trip - it seems like they're in the middle of renovations, and as I mentioned, it was a bit disheartening that we stood around for 45 minutes while we waited for everyone to casually get ready to float. The white water float is definitely more physical than a lazy river float, but it's nothing crazy and doesn't take any skill aside from holding steady on your raft as your float over the little "rapids." read more

This was our 4th time doing the Coal-Tubin raft float. I definitely like the new check-in building which allows you to enter the river right from there and just take the shuttle back. The trip was about 1 1/2 hours long so we went twice. The check-in area has a very nice building across the street which houses the restrooms and private changing areas. It was very clean. The check-in area sells various snacks, drinks, water shoes, t-shirts, etc. There is also a firepit and corn hole :) If you like to just let go and relax, this is the trip for you! Just one big lazy river! We rented the cooler tube and brought our bluetooth speaker. We just laid back and enjoyed the ride! It is well worth the 2 hour trip from Pittsburgh. The staff has always been kind and helpful. The only glitche this time was that we all signed our waivers online, but only 2 went through. The other 5 had to fill out the waiver in person. The staff did say that they were going to check into this. There is a safety presentation that lasts approximately 1 minute. There is not really any danger (even for little kids) as long as you are smart! By smart I mean not doing stupid things to endanger yourself. It is best to wear water shoes or tennis shoes because the rocks are slippery. For $25 (we got the tubes with the backs - they are much more comfortable) and paid $20 for the cooler tube (which the 7 of us split the cost). It is a cheap price for a full day of cooling off and relaxing! I am looking forward to my next venture at Coal Tubin! My job is very stressful, and this is the perfect do nothing, think about nothing, serene, peaceful day!!! Thank you!!!! read more

This was so much fun! We traveled about an hour and a half from Pittsburgh to the river tubing and it was the perfect summer activity! I went with three other friends and that's the perfect group to go with, especially if you want to float together and not get separated. We booked online in advance and you can choose from three types of tubes you want and you can get a cooler tube to hold drinks, clothes, snacks, you name it. I highly recommend it! Check in was at 12 and the shuttle left at 12:30. I really don't understand why they made us arrive so soon to stand around for 25 minutes when all we did was sign a form that probably took less than 5 minutes. They explained the days activities for about a minute and then the shuttle takes you to the drop off location and you tube! I suggest bringing your own rope since their rope snaps off easily. We tied ourselves together which makes it more fun! Definitely wear a water shoe or tennis shoes since the rocks are slippery. We even brought a waterproof speaker to play music and a waterproof pouch for our phone to take photos. There are very tiny rapids and it's like you are on a lazy river. Very relaxing day and it takes about an hour and a half to float down. You can go as many times as you'd like and the shuttle will take you back down again. There's spots you can pull off to eat or stop for a few minutes and a few spots are deeper than others but not very deep at all. At the end there should be signs where you stop, I don't see why they can't add a few of those for safety but other than that most of it's common sense. Only thing i can say is very disappointed. Called the night before to see what the water level was for the river, and was told it was fine and a little low and nobody was complaining. Took the drive which was 1 hr and 45 minute drive and the ride on the raft was only 1 hr and continuously got stuck. Very disappointed in the management because we complained why it wasnt 2 hrs long like last time we went. Highly recommend a Coal Tubin' trip if you like to relax on the water. The Stonycreek River is clean and relaxing. While it's perfect for families, our group of 22 was all adults and we had a blast. The Coal Tubin' staff handled our large group with ease and an awesome attitude. There was supposed to be a dam release the weekend we went but it didn't happen (July 27). Coal Tubin' staff advised us of the issue, told us the trip would be shorter because of it, and offered to make it worth our while by letting us do the run as many times as we wanted. We took them up on that and floated a second time. Not being from the area, I think that Johnstown has a lot to offer as a summer weekend trip - the flood museum and memorial, the incline, and Coal Tubin' are a few of the things we have done. read more

Seeing that it was 129 degrees on Saturday, we packed the cooler with enough beers for a long afternoon and took the 1.5 hour journey from Pittsburgh to Johnstown to use our Living Social coupons for Coal Tubin'. We parked when we arrived across the street from the block building with hand-painted signs directing us to "River Tubing $10". There was a table and a picnic tent set up outside. We literally just followed what other folks were doing - there was absolutely zero organization. Fill out the release form on the picnic table, surrender your money/coupons, and then also provide your drivers license, keys (or really anything that means something to you - he was taking access cards, credit cards, jewelry) to the guy handling the paperwork. They will provide you with a cooler at a cost (ours was included in the coupon) but good luck finding one that doesn't leak or has a functional handle. The rental of the tube/trip also includes a ride in the 'shuttle' to the river, which occurs on either a school bus circa 1970, or a van that has has to be restarted every time you hit a red light. Just stand over by the tubes with your group until someone comes to pick you up. Then grab a tube and off you go. I guess my main complaint is that we only did the lower section of the river, which took less than an hour (even at my extremely slow pace) and they still charge the same price. When it has rained or there is more water volume, they open the upper part for tubin' and its more like a 2-3 hour journey. Either way, it's silly to pay the same price for half (or less than half) of the trip. The river itself is nice, clean, and there isn't much road noise at all considering how close it is to metro-Johnstown. And thank goodness for sturdy tubes, cause when there isn't much water, there sure are a lot of rocks! read more

We drove down from Pittsburgh to go tubing today, and it was fantastic. I know that Coal Tubin' wasn't responsible for the weather, but it was a perfect day for it! I get what the other reviewers are saying about them being slightly disorganized -- I wasn't entirely certain what we were supposed to do, but when I asked "hey, what exactly are we supposed to do?" they told me. The entire staff was also very nice, relaxed, and despite the fact that they were extraordinarily busy they never seemed flustered or put-upon. The only problem was the amount of time we had to wait from the time we arrived until the time we got shuttled to the river - probably about an hour - because there was a shortage of tubes and we had to wait for some folks to get off the river. Once that happened, though, it was fine. We were able to float the whole 3.5 miles, it took about three hours. There were a couple small rapids but nothing nothing nothing at all what I was fearing (if that's "category 2," I should definitely stop being afraid of Ohio Pyle), and a couple spots where you have to lift your butt up to avoid bumping it along the rocks. The hardest part was keeping our group of seven more-or-less together. If it wasn't an 1.5 hour drive from where I live, I'd definitely go back over and over. As it is, I'm already scoping out places near Johnstown to go camping next year so we can make a day of tubing without having to drive home afterwards. Coal Tubin' is a perfect summer activity for families or groups of friends. Even though the lack of recent rain meant they were only doing the short run, the shuttle makes unlimited trips so we were able to go twice. We had a blast! The water is clean, and the staff were very friendly. I recommend bringing a small cooler with a handle to tie to the tube and a pair of water shoes (or old shoes) because the rocks are slippery. And wear your suit under your clothes because there's only 1 bathroom on site. read more

I really want to give them two stars, but I don't fault them for trying...I went to school in Johnstown, so I know how difficult it is to making a living in that city... They must be a new business, because it is seriously disorganized. I definitely would not make the drive from Pittsburgh to do this again, unless I knew 100% for sure there was going to be a damn release. If we wouldn't have stopped along the way in the bottom section of the river, we would have been done in less than 30 minutes. The drive there took 3x as long as the float itself. Make sure you follow them on FB, and / or call to confirm they are doing a dam release, otherwise it's not worth the time. That being said, the water seems relatively clean, I saw some fish so this part of the river isn't dead (unlike the gross cement channel that runs through Johnstown.) It's definitely not a "nature" float, as there are electric lines and manufacturing buildings along the river, but there are birds and plants all along the way that hide some of the industrialized parts of the city. read more

I still love Coal Tubin, but i cannot more strongly recommend you go only when there is a FULL RUN. First time I went it was a full run, nice long float, and super enjoyable until the end when the water is pretty shallow and we kept getting stuck on rocks. Short run means you get to tube that crappy part. :( You can go as many times as you want but I didn't really enjoy myself that much bc we kept getting hung up on rocks, then my tube flipped over nad falling on rocks in 2 feet of water is NOT fun. You will love Coal Tubin, but trust me you will love the full run more! We did see ducklings though...ducklings make everything awesome. read more

Five of us did Coal Tubing yesterday, after a dam release, and had a great time! It sounds like they've got more organized since the previous 2 reviewers' experiences. The service was friendly and informed, the ride was really pleasant and the weather great. Some tips: 1. Go only on weekends when there is a release of the Quemahoning Dam -- it makes a huge difference and they post the info on their site. This was my first time, but my sister had gone before when there was almost no water and she said it was much better. I'd say the water was 3-6 feet deep. It took us just under two hours to complete. 2. I recommend some heavy duty water shoes! The water is all churned up and pushing against the banks after a release and we did find ourselves having to walk/swim/push ourselves out to the center of the river a couple times (this is probably because we were tied together -- see tip 3). There are huge rocks under the water which you cannot see. 3. Carefully think before knotting yourselves together. After becoming separated after our initial drop-in, our group tied ourselves together with plastic twine we found on the bus. Once connected, we couldn't undo the knots and found ourselves clotheslining a few trees/trestles and thwacking into the aforementioned embankments. I do wish we'd been warned if there was a better way to do this. 4. More to the right before existing! There are some great little rapids on the left before the end of the ride -- they encourage you to get out, walk up the rock formation and do them multiple times-- but the exit immediately after is on the right. 5. If there are more than ten people in line for the trip, stand near the driveway -- they can only take ten people on the little bus (with tubes) and it's a first-come first-serve thing (not necessarily "in line by how you signed up"). You'd think there'd be a more efficient way to do this. 6. Bring your own cooler and sunscreen! Even on a cloudy day you get a significant amount. The water is really mellow, kinda brown, and you are in Johnstown -- there are wires above you and at one point an old steel plant beside you. It's not the Potomac, and I wouldn't make a long trek to town to do it, but if you're in the area, it's a great activity. And at $15 a person (less if you get a Groupon), it's a great deal. The most dangerous part of the entire experience is crossing the parking lot to the office. Johnstown is my hometown and I always make fun of the slow drivers when I go back. Apparently all of the fast ones are on Central avenue. They don't slow down for crosswalks and certainly don't slow down when there isn't a crosswalk, as is the case here. All in all a great experiecne. People of all ages were on the river. Only one of us flipped and that was over the initial rapid, which we were warned about! read more

We did the stony creek whitewater rafting trip today and it was awesome. The crew is not only friendly and helpful , but they know their stuff. Their gear is practically new, and they have everything there for you to use to keep you warm and comfortable. We've done ohiooyle a few times and while fun, this was EVEN MORE FUN! All whitewater for the whole trip. Very little downtime, almost no doldrums. Just rapid after rapid. No waiting for tons of people to take their turn..just a nice intimate bunch careening down the river. We've done coal tubin too, and it's a blast. The short trip is cool because you can go multiple times. I'm thrilled these guys opened up so close to where we live. We can add whitewater trips and tubin to our list of fun things to do on a regular basis. See you guys in the spring! read more

This was our second time tubing with Coal Tubin' and won't be our last. It's a short drive from Greensburg, PA and I think it's a much better tubing experience than that of the Yough over in West Newton. The staff is always friendly, helpful and engaging. You can really tell that they want you to enjoy it. The coolers aren't tubes anymore, but you can float your cooler in a tube so that's cool. Just don't drink too many adult libations or you may float to Pittsburgh lol. Definitely worth trying at least once. Fair prices and there are always living social or groupon offers going on. An updated daily post as to current temps (weather and water) as well as water levels would be helpful. I see it posted time to time and maybe it's listed somewhere and I just missed it. We went July 5th and it was only a half run, but they shuttled us up as many times as we wanted for no charge. Super awesome! See you there! read more

I went to Coal Tubin towards the end of April this year. It was 38 degrees outside, and our guide told us that this was the first time he ever took customers down the river when it was snowing. People looked at us like we were insane. My group did the Deluxe Whitewater Rafting trip, and it was awesome! The guides really know what they are doing and are very knowledgeable. It took many hours to get through all of it. This was my first time rafting and I don't think it could have gone any better. The near-freezing temperatures were a great motivation to row hard and stay warm, and it makes for a great story! If you have any interest in rafting, this is a great place to go. read more

Went yesterday (Thursday, July 18th, 2013) with my wife and cousins and we had a great time! It's a river, which I think most people forget, so don't expect it to be the crystal blue waters of Bermuda. That said, the water was very clear and we didn't see any litter on our way downstream. Make sure you wear water shoes, as near the end I got off my raft barefoot and took a quite painful spill, which was my own fault for trying to walk on slippery rocks in my bare feet. The scariest thing about the entire trip was trying to cross traffic to get to the office. read more

Went on 6/22/2013 and had an excellent time. Only the lower portion was open but we did three runs and could have done a fourth. The transportation was fine - what do people expect on a river run - and the employees were very helpful. A previous reviewer was correct. You park across the street from the building, sign your release and off you go. Simple as that - not quite sure why the previous reviewer was complaining. It's not a trip to Disney World. The river is clean, took about an hour per trip down, and waited no more than 10 minutes for the next shuttle up. I would give this a 5 star if the scenery were better- it's not bad - just not outstanding. A 4 rating is not a reflection of Coal Tubing. Drove in from Pittsburgh and will be doing it again! I had read all of the reviews before we went so that I knew what to expect and what to look for. I was VERY impressed with the improvements that have been made. I went on July 5, 2014. The "greeter" for lack of a better word was named Bob. I made sure to get his name because he was AMAZING. He explained everything, cracked some jokes, and made sure everyone was in the correct place and knew exactly what was going on. He explained the rules, the guidelines, had us sign the waiver, answered any questions, etc. It was a very organized line. After, we went on the bus and the driver was also very knowledgeable. Everyone that I experienced that worked there was very sweet and knew what they were doing. I'm going to be honest with you - Chad from the previous comments and the owner really took the comments previously to heart and improved on this experience 100%. I am very impressed. The only problem that I had was that it was not posted on Facebook or Twitter that it wasn't a full run that day because of the water being low. I would have went a different day because you WILL run into rocks and it WILL hurt. Overall, a very good experience and I would recommend it to all! read more

I'm wavering on 2 or 3 stars, mainly because of the quality of the river. The tubes were inexpensive, and I was satisfied with the service, for the most part (which I will explain later). I was expecting a lovely calm relaxing river run - I had done tubing before -and that was what I was looking forward to. Unfortunately, the water never got deeper than about 2 feet, and more than half of our 3 hour journey was full of rocks that my tube would get stuck on. About halfway through the ride, I noticed that my tube was leaking air. My husband confirmed that he could see bubbles coming out of my tube. I suspect it sprung a leak on one of the rocks. Fortunately we were part of a large party, including 2 children who were able to share a tube. My brother held them while my husband and I struggled to walk to them on slippery rocks. I can't imagine what we would have done if it were just us. There was nowhere to walk beside the river. I was exhausted by the end of the trip from the walk to get a new raft from my brother, having to keep dislodging myself from rocks, and all the hand paddling to avoid getting stuck on rocks. Now, it was quite scenic and I probably would have liked it a lot better if my tube hadn't deflated, but it was rarely the calm, relaxing experience I was hoping for. I don't plan on tubing down that river anytime soon. read more
