    After acupuncture!

I began taking my 18 year old Dachshund to Coast Veterinary when I came home to find his back legs paralyzed. I bought him a cart and other items to make a now paralyzed dog comfortable. I was recommended for him to do acupuncture so I took him to Coast Veterinary. Within weeks, he was walking again. It really was a miracle. Their entire staff cares about your pets well-being. I highly recommend them.

My 16 year old Bichon Frise, Reggie

Kindness away from home: I would like to share wonderful experiences at Coast Veterinary Services. My family went for a short trip in Santa Cruz area so we spent the night in Scott Valley. We were traveling with our 16 year old diabetic Bichon Frise, Reggie. It is not easy travel with Reggie but we love to have him with us. I thought I prepared everything for him , insulin, food, bowl, diaper etc. However, I still missed the most important thing, his U-40 syringes. How could I inject Reggie without syringes. U-40 is not common either. I tried Walgreens, CVS but no luck. Reggie missed out 1 dose of insulin so his glucose was Hi as he drank tons of water like crazy. I researched for veterinary clinic in Yelp and Coast Veterinary Services was shown. In the morning, I drove there. Tasha greeted me warmly. I told her my situation and I needed 5 of U-40 syringes. I sat and waited there then Karen came out and gave me the whole bag of U-40 Syringe (10syringes). Not only that, when I wanted to pay, Tasha told me to have syringes and she did not charge me a penny. Thank you Tasha, Karen and Coast Veterinary Services, you all saved Reggie's life. I really appreciated your kindness. You all made my trip memorable with human kindness. If I have lived in San Valley area, Reggie would be the good patient at your clinic. Thank you very much once again.

Our fur baby feeling much better
    T R.

We brought our 8yr old AmStaff here. She has chronic tummy issues and we needed answers. Our fur baby was seen by Dr. Sullenberger. After a thorough examination and a series of tests, we discovered we're dealing with IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease). Dr. Sullenberger answered all of our questions and concerns. We now have a plan set in place to deal with future episodes of IBD and feel confident that our fur baby is going to be feeling much better. Thank you Dr. Sullenberger.

I brought my cat to this clinic for a second opinion after years of infrequent episodes that I believed were pain-related. Over a four-year period, he (my cat) had about 10-15 of these episodes, and our regular vet was unable to find a cause. I asked to be present during the exam, which is completely normal, and Dr. Dawoud rolled his eyes and very reluctantly agreed. Once in the room, Dr. Dawoud performed an extremely rough "exam", which caused my cat to wince, cower and show clear signs of fear he had never displayed before. He handled my cat like an object he disliked, and my cat was visibly terrified and in pain. At one point, I reacted with a yelp (yes I yelped) as he pressed unnecessarily hard on my cat's back. He reacted by dramatically rolling his eyes again and menacingly asked, "Are you sure you want to be present?", and added an irritated sigh. I was shocked. In nearly 40 years of growing up with and caring for cats, I have never seen a veterinarian handle any animal with such heavy handed disdain, as well as treat me as if I were a nuisance and not a patron of their business. Never. And I've had my fair share of bad vet experiences. This was so disorienting because I was so taken off guard. He then convinced me (in my state of shock) to leave him alone with my cat in the exam room by sending me to the front desk for something they didn't even have! I deeply regret leaving my poor sweet boy alone in that room with Dawoud. When I returned, he claimed to have "found" the cause of my cat's episodes and proceeded to press on my cat's back until he cried out in pain and looked back briefly at Dawoud in fear, before averting his gaze and cowering. Dawoud then said my cat had back pain.. as if what he had just done was simply to show me this.. ?! And what an incredibly vague thing to claim is the "cause" of the sporadic spasm episodes and vocalization my cat was experiencing. He also claimed that both of my cat's ears were infected, but we had just seen our regular vet 1 week prior and there were no issues with his ears, at all at that appointment nor at home. He then said that he would give a Solensia shot. Dawoud did not ask for consent or clearly explain the treatment plan, or what the shot even was. He simply stated that's what he was gonna do and left theroom. A few mins later the technician came in and heavy handedly cleaned my cat's ears and said the doctor would be in shortly to administer the Solensia injection. I asked for them to have Dr. Dawoud come explain it more thoroughly. So Dawoud returned, visibly annoyed, and vaguely described it as a monthly arthritis pain shot. When I questioned whether this made sense, he brushed it off. When I asked about side effects, he mentioned only injection-site pain and nausea and did not disclose potential neurological risks or more serious reactions. I refused the shot and was still billed over $300 for this horrible experience. Later that night, i had to rush my poor boy to the emergency vet.. What I had previously believed were "pain episodes" were identified by the doctor on staff at the emergency vet as seizures. The ER vet also noted that my cat's back was painful and recommended we see a neurologist as soon as possible, explaining that stress and pain can worsen seizures and increase frequency. Over the following week, my cat experienced up to 7 seizures per day. It was terrifying and heartbreaking. The neurologist later confirmed that these episodes were seizures, and we have been controlling them with much success for 1year now. We have actually been able to start a taper schedule to hopefully get him controlled without the medication seeing as ( before going to Valley Oak Veterinary Clinic ) the episodes were infrequent enough to not require the use of a prescription drug. The trauma Dr.Dawoud caused my cat, plus whatever happened in the 5mins in that room when he was alone with him, is what triggered my cats previously very infrequent single episode seizures to turn into 7 seizures a day for a whole week-week and a half before we were able to see the neurologist and medicate him. Also, Please understand that Solensia has a known reputation for neurological side effects, and I truly believe that if I had allowed that injection, my cat's outcome could have been much worse. Finally, this clinic should correct misleading information online, including removing reviews on Google for doctors who no longer work there, fixing misspelled names, and correcting false claims such as identifying as a "woman-owned business" when Valley Oak Veterinary Clinic is listed as solely owned by and licensed to Sameh Dawoud, who does not identify as a woman. Please look for red flags and always be in the room with any vet you are unfamiliar with

I'm glad Exotic Pet Clinic of Santa Cruz has the expertise and resources to help them. The fact that they don't even treat cats and dogs is reassuring, knowing that my rabbit is being cared for by professionals who are dedicated to and have valuable experience with small animals and other less common pets. In fact, I was referred here by a different veterinary hospital closer to home who knew my bunny would be in better hands at the Exotic Pet Clinic of Santa Cruz. As it turned out, they were attentive to my bunny's needs from the moment I stepped inside the exam room, and showed understanding toward my situation and how overwhelming having a sick pet can be. I appreciated that they were honest and detailed when providing answers to my questions and options for treatments to address my bunny's condition, and clear and upfront about potential outcomes. They even explained the itemized billing in a way that was easy to comprehend. It's a bit of a drive out for me from San Jose (and the twists and turns on highway 17 are definitely not my fave), but it was worth it to get my bunny the help he needed. I'm grateful to all of the staff on site. And having a place like this around is something I don't take for granted.

I think we are "Furequent Flyers" at this point- the staff here have nursed Lorraine through tumor removals, teeth extractions, a dog attack, rampant diarrhea, and many, many vaccines. I feel that the care team at Aptos-Cap are kind and also very professional: They have always ensured my dog has access to the highest standard of care but are considerate and non-judgmental when I decline procedures or ask for cheaper alternatives (e.g. declining an echocardiogram and sticking to x-rays and careful monitoring of my dog's heart condition). I've had the pleasure of working with all three veterinarians at the clinic and each of them are cost conscious, reminding me of prices as they build the invoice and suggesting strategies for meeting my needs. For example, they determined that my very anxious dog needed a sedative (gabapentin?) for a procedure and Dr. Hage explained to me the steep price difference between intravenous versus the slower but cheaper oral option. My dog is on multiple medications and they have happily given me paper-copies of the prescriptions to buy my meds at wholesale pharmacies. All the techs I've had are very gentle and patient with my dog (shout-out Trish!). Their new clinic is *noice* and feels exceptionally clean. Georgia at the front desk is the sweetest but on top of it with last-minute requests. No complaints about costs... Vet care in California is extraordinarily expensive across the board and Santa Cruz County is one of the most expensive places in the state to live or run a small business. I waited in long long lines at the free monthly vet care clinics when I was younger. You get what you pay for.
