Mother's Day - A Birthday Extravaganza!…read more Two years ago I flew in the SNJ-4 Texan for a birthday thrill; this year my wonderful wife gave me an hour ride in Vintage Aircraft's P-51 Mustang! She's the best! If you love the sound of a WWII high performance engine, love speed and appreciate the 20 year old pilots who flew these magnificent machines during a war, the P-51 is a plane to experience. Drove to the Schellville airport on Mother's Day for my ride. Travis pulled the P-51 from it's hanger, went through it's extensive pre-flight check and fueled her up. At this point, my heart was pounding with excitement and anticipation of a ride in a P-51! I told Travis I was also taking another P-51 crew with us that day, he had a quizzed look. My mother's deceased husband was stationed in England during WWII and was assigned to a P-51 squadron as an armourer (loaded 50 cal ammo and fueled the planes for their next flight). Found a picture of Mick, the pilot, mechanic, crew chief all standing beside their assigned P-51, the GlenGaryGuy. Pilot had his wife's name "Jackie" on the other side. They all got to go for one more ride! Chris Prevost, the pilot, asked where I wanted to go? I'd done the Golden Gate Bridge, out over Marin County to Tomales Bay and back in the Texan. Chris had a suggestion - Schellville to Lake Berryessa and over into the San Joaquin Valley, up along the Vaca Range to Middletown, over to Santa Rosa, out to Bodega Bay, Tomales Bay and down to Mill Valley and Mt Tam with a ride down Miller Ave, out to the Golden Gate Bridge and back to Schellville - heck yeah, sign me up!! Travis gave me instructions on how to climb onto the plane and into the rear seat, tight but comfortable and buckled in. Thank goodness I had a hat. I'm 6'1" and just barely had head room (though I was too excited to care). Chris brought the Merlin V-1650 to life and we taxied down to the end of the runway, brought the oil temp up, closed the canopy and we rolled down the runway - full speed ahead. Pulled back and up we went - what a rush! Travis had taken my wife to a point where she could record the whole liftoff - yeah! My adrenaline rush was in high gear! I immediately thought of the young pilots who risked their lives for our freedom; here I was just on a joy ride in a plane they flew in actual combat or escorting bombers - kind of surreal. Great sidebar to the flight was being actually being able to see the devastation from all of the fires from Lake Berryessa all the way too Middletown - scorched earth. Bodega Bay to the mouth of Tomales Bay gives a real perspective how beautiful our coastal area is. Chris did a couple of sharp turns, the P-51 cut the sky like a sharp knife. I kept the headsets halfway on, wanted to "hear" the roar of the P-51's engine. Down to Mill Valley, lined up on Miller Ave and out we went to the Golden Gate Bridge. What a day! I guess I should end my story, though writing about flying in the Mustang brings back all the fun I enjoyed that day. Travis and my wife had been monitoring our flight and were ready for our landing. Past the time we should have gone back, Bob took us into a shallow back bay as the sun dipped down and told me to cast into a side channel. Bam! I caught a healthy sized striper. He had hooked one for my girlfriend earlier. With Bob, it's not just the fishing. He gives tours and he weaves that into the guided trip. His great sense of humor and genuine desire to put his clients on fish really sets him apart from a lot of guides I've had. He took a lot of time to teach my girlfriend how to cast and she truly surprised me on how far she was casting- farther than me at times!

On a private tour on Bobs boat, we ventured out from Napa all the way out to Wingo (ghost town). We saw wildlife, plants, flocks of birds, old duck clubs from the 1920's, sunsets, pink skies, stars. It was beautiful and serene. We were the only ones out there in San Pablo bay and it was so peaceful. If you enjoy nature, this tour gives you a different perspective from the comfort of a boat. The sunset boat tour is one not to miss. I will be back again to do another tour! PS: Dress warm and in layers (depends on time of year). Bring your cameras, binoculars and recording devices because you would want to capture nature's moments.

The staff were so…read morepatient and kind as they assisted my grandmother, who was having a hard time getting into the gondola. They tried different ways to assist her and she finally got in. In my party, there was 5 of us, who were all curvy and we all got in and had a fun time. Shawn, our gondolier and owner, played music, gave us information, and even sung songs. I would definitely be back to experience it again and try their other cruises as well. It was such a peaceful and beautiful moment. I believe everyone should try it at least once. I attribute the success of this adventure to my two guides, Charlie and Johnny, and to the proprietor of Off-the-Hook Fly Fishing, Mike. Upon arrival at Putah Creek my memories from more than 55 years ago when I bait cast for natural trout on creeks in the Feather River Canyon were revived. From the smell of dry grasses on the California hills, the sound of babbling water in Putah Creek, and learning again how to fish for trout, I was transported back in time. And most importantly, the knowledge and patience that my guides Charlie and Johnny provided paralleled that from my childhood neighbor who taught me how to catch trout in those creeks. The two days I fly fished on Putah Creek with Charlie and Johnny exceeded my expectations. I was fortunate that Mike had arranged different guides for each of the two days, since Charlie and Johnny had their own style of teaching and guiding, and took me to different locations on the creek. The different fishing spots provided various water and terrain conditions that allowed me the opportunity to learn and use casting and mending techniques. I am now confident that I understand the basics, and I am prepared to go off on my own to practice fly fishing techniques and catch some fish. Ok, fine, just a tidbit about the anniversary...my man booked Golden Gate Helicopters to take us to Napa for a special dinner. When we drove up to the super exclusive (never before known by us) private airline portion of SFO airport, I had the opportunity to meet Tim and Tom. Both greeted us with welcoming smiles and gave us a little insight on what it feels like to go on a helicopter (think of yourself as sitting on a washing machine was their analogy). Basically, we weren't blindly led to a helicopter for the first time and told to put on our seat belts. A very good explanation was provided to us and it really calmed me down because I realized I was slightly freaked out. Tim and Tom have a ridiculous amount of experience and they share a great sense of humor. The ride to Napa and back was beyond excellent - I got to experience the Bay Area in a never before seen way - from thousands of miles up in the sky! Everything was smooth except for one funny little episode where my husband asked if Tim and Tom wanted to "crash" at our place due to the fog rolling in...while we were in mid air! Haha...not. Helicopter tours/rides ain't cheap, but I highly recommend this luxurious "ride" for a truly unforgettable, special and unique event in your life. Kudos and thank you again T&T! I loved that they plan the day for you so all you have to worry about is getting to the trolley in the morning. We went to 4 wineries and we really enjoyed them. I would definitely go to most of them again independently. The guides at each winery were knowledgeable and I definitely learned a lot. The most expensive stop was $50 per person as they do special pricing for the trolley guests, so you do save a little over going there independently. Lunch was a delicious chicken sandwich and pasta salad with homemade cookies that we ate picnic style at a winery. It was delightful! I appreciated how attentive they were to my allergies. I would certainly recommend the wine trolley to any first time visitors to Napa! If you are a regular visitor to the area I don't know if you'd enjoy it as much.
