Doug is a terrific Carpenter/Handyman. He did a bunch of work for us, including repairing and painting a large wood patio cover; patching & painting; electrical; repairing leaky gutters. I am submitting this review for my friend Pat Hall who is unfamiliar with Yelp but wanted to spread the word about Doug's good work... I have had Doug do several projects around my house.  First, he put in a back door and ramp off my back bedroom, then he put up a free-standing awning that a handyman could not install because he couldn't figure out how to do it.  Doug put up this awning all by himself, and it's quite heavy and awkward. When I first met Doug shortly after moving into my home, Doug noticed that the water heater was not vented.  The building inspector failed to notice this and did not report it.  Doug said that the water heater door, which faces outside, was not up to code and the heat buildup could cause a fire.  On further examination, Doug noticed that, yes, a small fire had occurred and melted a plastic part. Doug immediately went to the hardware store, bought a vent plate, cut the proper opening in the door and installed the vented plate. I do not hesitate to leave Doug alone in my home while he works if I'm gone.  He is very honest, is good to my dogs and his prices are very reasonable -- so reasonable, in fact, that I add to my payment and chastise him for not asking for more. read more

Doug just finished a new upstairs deck and a downstairs outdoor patio deck. See photo. We couldn't be happier. Doug always goes the extra step to make the work great. When I was getting bids I called Doug. He asked a ton of questions and tried to dial-in what we wanted. After he came out and brought photos, gave us Trex samples and sent us links to things we might like. This step changed what we had originally thought we wanted. We eventually decided on using Trex and TimberTech for both the deck and the railings. Eventually we went to JR Lumber and reviewed products with Doug and a rep. Doug wrote a really professional contract with easy payment milestones. The work took longer that we expected because his other carpenter got hurt and couldn't work. Doug is an easy guy to have around and our dogs loved him. He was careful with our pool, the dogs and the rest of the backyard. The last thing Doug did was to fix a lot of other broken stuff; outdoor electrical outlet....pool light...etc. I hope he doesn't get too busy because we're getting ready to hire him for many other projects around our home. Oh! Doug's prices are competitive....even lower than other contractors. read more

If I could I would give this company 10 stars!!!! We have been meaning to get our deck redone because the previous owner had done a poor job or the contractor they hired did "Mickey mouse" fixer upper. Doug has done an amazing job with our deck and it's perfect! He did not charge us any outrageous price, he is fair with prices, we even had him check our draining under the deck to make sure it was cleared. He also built us a crawl space lid, because it was in need to be fixed and again no outrageous price, still charged us which is fair but at a fair price! The very definition of condescending. Trully sounded like he was knowledgable about his craft, but hes the very reason why some business should have a sales person. I dont know about you but I like to be encouraged to spend my money, not made to feel like an idiot while spending my money. I went from: " I think this is the guy for the job!" to "I could and would never hire someone like him!" amazing how Doug talked himself out of a job. I know hes trying to help and make suggestions but spend some time on the phone with Doug and youll soon find yourself wishing you didnt waste your time. My request was for a Bar: Doug mentioned a price tag of $2500 - $3000 of course he would have to see the place. Thats seems fair and i didnt have a problem with the price. So what does that tell you. I used Doug of Coastal Carpentry on a property that I own and he performed the work in the time that he said he would and the finished project was even better than I had expected. Doug made a few recommendations along the way and he incorporated these improvements in the final design which really impressed me. He is really knowledgeable of his craft and also knows how to fix other things that might need addressed as well. He fixed some plumbing issues while he was at my property as well. I have recently given him work at other houses and he has done these projects with great results as well. I would recommend him to others. I selected Coastal Carpenter by chance, & also got several other bids, to replace a second floor balcony. Overwhelmingly pleased with Mr. Taylor's work. His bid was much lower than some,and yet inclusive of the needed materials. Some contractor's will underbid to get the job and then keep bumping it up to what it really should be. Mr. Taylor is licensed, insured and bonded. You do not want to hire someone who isn't. He knows just about every aspect of home construction and can also do electrical and plumbing work, kitchen remodels...etc. He will bid your job and provide you with a signed contract stating exactly what he will deliver. He takes pride in his work, has the integrity you can trust in and cleans up behind himself at the end of each day. I worked along side of him (doing some of the less technical stuff) and he taught me alot about the processes of what we were doing. He's very personable, likable, honest and forthright. If you want a superior job at a better price than the "big store professionals", you simply cannot go wrong with him. I have used Coastal Carpenter for both a sink repair and a bathroom flooring job and both times Doug has been top notch. He is a very knowledgeable carpenter with tons of experience in residential building in general. It shows in his diverse level of expertise and his attention to details across all areas. He knew what was needed to open the floor next to my toilet to stop the floor from moving which in turn made my toilet leak. He fixed it quick and charged me a very reasonable rate for the extra fix. After the flooring went in, I realized that he saved me from a major headache down the road by repairing the floor first. I now save almost $10 month on my water bill. He has also fixed a simple faucet / sink leak and he was super quick and efficient. He made it look easy, for him that is... lol... I would never use this contractor. He is not reliable. He made an appointment to install my door on Monday at 9:00 then called at 9:30 and said he was taking his girlfriend to the ER and would not be able to install my door until Saturday. No problem. Emergencies happen. However, Saturday came and he didn't show at 9:00. Never called. I tried calling. Voice mail was full. Kept calling. Emailed. Finally got an EMAIL telling me he was too busy with other projects and that I should probably find somebody else. Very unprofessional. He had all week to call me so I could have found another contractor but blew me off. read more
