I was referred to Coastal Eye Group by an ED doctor because of cellulitis in my eyelid. The initial triage nurse was wonderful--compassionate and attentive--but unfortunately, the rest of the visit quickly went downhill. The nurse who took my measurements and dilated my eyes was extremely rude. My husband, concerned that the drops being used might worsen my condition, asked a simple question, and instead of reassurance, her response was snarky: "It's protocol." To put this in perspective, I was dealing with a painful stye that had turned into cellulitis and had already been suffering for three days. Rather than feeling cared for, I felt dismissed. The entire office had the atmosphere of a factory--patients processed as quickly as possible with little regard for comfort or understanding. This was one of the most impersonal medical experiences I've ever had, and I would strongly recommend steering clear of this practice. read more

Message says the office is closed but the hours listed says open ( Murrells Inlet) Called 79 th street and they came back and said no Docs on call and to keep calling? Business must be good? This review is for the Murrells Inlet office. My wife is not mobile and has to use a wheelchair and a van to travel to medical appointments. She had an appointment today, and when she got there, was t old her appointment had been canceled and rescheduled. No notice of this was ever received. When I inquired of the check-in person about how notice of this was given, I was told the cancellation and rescheduling was done via USPS. not via e-mail or text message. No such notice was received. This did not create any visible staff concern or surprise. No office manager was on duty so I was unable to explore the matter while I was there. Neither was any doctor on duty there. I confirmed that contact information was correct. In this day and age, not using electronic communications for an appointment matter is inexcusable. The staff I spoke with didn't seem to be particularly concerned that the notice was not received. It looks to me like there is an administrative problem with this office. It contrasts very poorly with my own experience at the Myrtle Beach office, which could not have been better. But because that office is not equipped to handle a wheelchair patient, my wife has had to go to the Murrells Inlet office. read more

I had cataract surgery 3 weeks ago on my right eye and it is still slightly swollen according to them . My vission is stil blurry but they deny that. At a follow up I was asked to read an eye chart at least 6 or 7 times and could only once guess at the blurry letters. When I sked how the results were, they told me everyting was fine. Obviously I must find a different opthamologist. read more

They have a disclaimer that says we are a specialty eye care office and as such, your wait time can be one to three hours wait. This is ridiculous as the staff doesn't schedule long enough between appointments. Looks like money grabbing to me! read more

This place is a joke. I called asking for an e-mail to send in bloodwork results, they gave me kaycroderick@gmail.com as the e-mail to send it to. That's right a gmail address...days later I receive a certified mail saying that I am not following up and could lose my vision as a result. I call in and they say they have not received this bloodwork, so I go out of my way to find access to a fax machine to send it that way instead of e-mail. After two more follow up calls getting sent to voicemail and never returned I finally get through to someone days later who tells me they got the bloodwork and sent a referral out for me. I call the office they "sent" the referral to after not hearing from them for a few days to find out THEY NEVER SENT IT. read more

My family and I have been loyal Coastal Eye Group patients for more than 20 years. We had always received excellent eye care from their doctors. In the past couple of years, the Retina Specialist, Dr. Charles Doering, left the practice and opened his own practice. We followed him because we credit Dr. Doering for saving my brother's eyesight. Recently my brother required an eye surgery that our doctor does not perform. Coastal's Dr. Hazelton was able to perform the needed surgery. We were not prepared for my brother to have little to no vision after the surgery. In the healing process, limited vision has returned but is extremely foggy. When I took my brother for the second surgery follow-up he asked Dr. Hazelton would the fog or cloudiness disappear. I quote Dr. Hazelton's reply, " You want darkness or fogginess?" I have had only good experiences with Coastal Eye Group, at three of their offices over ten years. We currently go to the Murrells inlet office. My mother currently sees Dr. Prinzi for macular degeneration injections every few months. These treatments have saved her eyesight. For that, I'm willing to wait in this busy office. (Hey! It's Myrtle Beach! Expect it to be busy!) The office is pleasant and well-organized. I've found the staff to be professional and accommodating to my mother's special needs and my requests. Dr. Prinzi is skillful, patient and kind. We will be staying with him. Today they took us early and the visit took an hour; it's a three-step process. No complaints! If you don't like to wait, practice patience and bring a book! read more

True Professionals running a well oiled machine! After a frustrating experience with another eye group, it was a blessing being treated by Dr Frank Sloan and his capable staff. Two cataract surgeries later my vision is back to pre 40's. No more $600 glasses. The $20 reading glasses are just fine. I never had a good experience with coastal eye group from the first phone call. Attitude is poor! Very limited options for financial payments on elective surgery. I waited 4 months for an appointment!! Then got a letter that requested insurance info, that's ok, but, doesn't say when your appointment is, No phone # to call anywhere on the letter. Told to come 10 minutes early, then waited an hour, and ten minutes. I got up and walked out. You are treated like just another eyeball to fix, the staff was stupid, even the first office worker said she was losing her mind, she lost the insurance papers, that I just handed her. Lol! I'm driving down to Charleston rather than deal with this incompetent group! Beware, do your research, and check the Google reviews also! read more

I've seen the younger Dr. Sloan 3 times for my glaucoma. Never once did he explain much of anything, On the 3rd visit he claimed that my vision has drastactly changed and the drops weren't working and I needed surgery. They only do surgery in Georgetown which I find strange. That's a 2 hr drive from Little River. I scheduled appointments, paid $1,020 with a balance due day of surgery (I was getting a lens put in as well as the glaucoma and cataract procedure). I cancelled all those appointments two days later because I felt like it was a production line type office. No explanations, no bedside manner. I have since changed doctors and learned more in 20 minutes with a new doctor than I did with this group in three visits. I should also note that I still have not received my refund. They are still holding onto my $1,020.00 I would strongly suggest going elsewere. read more

Had an appointment with Dr. Doering this week. I had to wait 1.45 minutes to be seen. Very inconsiderate of people's time. Dr. Doering has zero bedside manner. Dr Carl Sloan put a stent in my eye even though I did not have glaucoma. Three doctors at MUSC and two at Duke told me they never would have put the stent in my eye. I have been in excruciating pain for a year and half because of his poor judgment. My life has been ruined since my eye is not only painful but my eyelid troops to the point of almost covering my pupil. I have spent thousands of dollars trying to undo his work. Incompetent quack! The waiting room here is terrible. I've come here in the morning, and in the afternoon and there is almost never any open seating and the entire room is packed. Plan to wait a long time in the front waiting room and in sub-waiting. It seems like they overbook the patients making it almost impossible to get people in and out in a timely manner. The front desk staff is usually pleasant, but I feel like a lot of the people working in the back that work under the doctors and specialists have an almost aggressive attitude and seem almost always put off. Every time I've taken my mother here we've always had to wait 2-3 hours, which to me is a little excessive for only seeing the doctor for under ten minutes or so for basic eval or cataract eval. For a place that sees mostly elderly and handicapped individuals there aren't very many handicapped spots in the front as well. Overall I've been grateful for the work they've done for my mother's eye issues, but they have several issues they need to address in house as far as wait times and overall consideration goes for their patients and their time. read more

Make sure that you have an entire free day to devote to your appointment. Currently still sitting in the back waiting to be seen by the doctor. My appointment was at 11:40 and it is now 1:40. They dilated my eyes and then left me back here sitting for two hours now. This is insane. read more

We are traveling from Florida to Michigan with a 3 day layover. Noticed flashing in my eye that could be a torn retna. I called and they got me in the same day. They took me back shortly after doing paperwork. Had a eye scan and saw Dr Doring shortly. He was very business like but friendly that's what I like when dealing with my vision. He did laser my eye and I was our in about 2 hrs. That's quick for a basic walk in. The staff was very nice and friendly. I would use them again if needed. After reading reviews here I was expecting the worst, that was far and away from my experience here I would highly recommend them. read more

Absolutely incompetent staff. Made appt for visual disturbance, told me nothing for a month. Called to confirm and they said I had no appt. Rescheduled, verified insurance. Arrived, said they don't give Rx for glasses and they don't take my insurance. Girl at desk said I was given misinformation when appt was set. Wasted a whole month because of their incompetence. I arrived at 11 am per my appt. I waited 15 minutes and they called me into another waiting room. I waited there about 1/2 hour. They then took me into one of the exam rooms and I waited again. After about another 45 minutes of waiting I stood at the door hoping someone would look my way. Someone did look my way telling me that the doctor would be with me in 2 seconds. I told the staff that I was getting ready to leave in another minute. Dr. Doering came in and apologized stating it was the busiest morning since the pandemic hit. He spent about 10 minutes with me. I noticed it was now 1 pm as I was leaving. This was my third visit to this place. I had at least 1 hour+ wait the previous 2 times. Not a happy camper but the other places I called were not taking new patients. I told the scheduler as I was leaving that my appt was 11 am and I had to wait almost 2 hours and asked "Does that mean I can make an appt next time and arrive 2 hours later?" His bedside manner is a little standoffish, but I didn't go there to make a friend, but to get excellent eye care as I have a bit of a history and was new in area and needed to establish a good eye doctor.
