Such a laid back, friendly and knowledgeable guy, Kyle made us feel like we were just a bunch of friends hanging out on his boat for the day. Was gift for my mom when she was visiting from NJ. She loved it. Saw coconut island with hundreds of fish, then walked around sandbar, then saw about 20 turtles maybe more and then lunch stop at secret beach (or was it called island) and then past china mans hat. Very special excursion, away from tourists, and I plan on recommending this to all my mainland guests. Made me wish I had a boat but then again I don't know the first thing about maintenance, rules on boating (is that a verb) etc. will just have to make sure to become a regular patron of this business.

The team and group size is perfect for maximum turtle sightings and less crowds. The crews are experienced and knowledgeable about the islands and so fun to be around. It's like an outing with your close friends every time you go. We had a small medical emergency occur (totally unrelated to water and boat activities) for one of the members of my family and the Captian and crew were incredible. Their quick thinking and rapid response to the situation ensured everyone's safety and comfort getting her back to shore. They were so kind and supportive and made a potentially scary situation for her as easy as possible. We will absolutely be returning to them on our next trip to the islands.

I read about the excursions off Waikiki that all but promised seeing Honu. I did some research and chose to book with Captain Max Boat Tours and their Turtle Canyon Snorkel. I read reviews and what really attracted me to this outfitter was the fact they ran semi-private boat tours with only 6 guests. Correspondence (email) leading up to the excursion was clear and helpful. We arrived a few minutes early and visited their small shop while checking in. We waited just a few minutes and then were walked over to their boat dock, meeting both the guide, Sophia and the boat captain, Stephanie. They gave us safety information and prepared us for the short boat ride out to "Turtle Canyon". Our craft was a zodiac type inflatable raft with a mounted seats and a windscreen for the captain. We glided out to the snorkel zone with Waikiki beach before us, a grand ocean view of this famous beach. Sophie helped the other guests get their snorkel gear (included in the price) except for us - we bring our own snorkel equipment. We put in the water and after all guests were in, Sophia called in the direction she was leading us. On the way over we swam through schools of fish. This was an awesome experience we did not expect - we snorkel a lot and love seeing the marine life. We learned that some outfitters feed the fish out here and so they stick around instead of swim away, which we're used to experiencing. In about 20 feet of water our guide pointed out several turtles on the bottom. Lucky for us, one of them swap up for air - and stayed near the and stayed near the surface for quite a few minutes (longer than we usually see) which allowed us to get a great view of this beautiful creature (all the while, maintaining a safe distance to protect the turtle). Sophia led us to two other spots nearby, seeing fish on the reef below and several more turtles. Once again we were fortunate to have another turtle swim up to the surface for a few breaths. I'm very glad we chose Captain Max as some of the other outfitters that bring larger groups would have been a very different experience with a group clamoring for views of the few turtles that were out there. Our guide was knowledgeable, approachable, and friendly - and ensured we were all safe (and the marine life were also protected). On our way back to shore we were treated to another great view of Oahu, with Waikiki and Honolulu in the foreground and the mountains behind. Thanks Sophie and Captain Stephanie for a memorable excursion! NOTE: We know that early in the morning is generally the best time to snorkel as the water tends to be calmer, visibility better and fish ore active. We had a 930 start but next time would be the early time (730) as I learned there are even fewer other outfitters out on the water at that time.

Our tour guides were native Hawaiians that told us endless stories about Hawaiian traditional culture. Stories that were told to them by their ancestors and some that they learned in elementary school. That was honestly my favorite part of the tour sailing in the ocean and listening to traditional stories from his childhood. Water climbing shoes are also a huge plus if you have them so you can climb and explore the island rocks easier. KOA had a water proof bag to keep personal items and provided water. I would suggest bringing easy snacks to enjoy and then hitting up the bar restaurant across the street from the beach when you're done!

Parking is available near the boat for a pay by hour cost using one of two apps. Their timeline for return was accurate, and we even got to a point of being out where we had enough and were ready to return a little early. Bathrooms are available in a nearby building with key from the boat, or on the boat itself. A majority of the people on the boat took motion sickness medicine prior to the trip to avoid any issue. It was consistent waves the whole trip with no stopping so be prepared. The boat has a covered area with table and seats, along with air conditioning and fans. We brought some snacks and a cooler with drinks and food that we put out on the table for all to consume as desired. The crew put the lines in the water for the large fish which we didn't catch any of. Apparently the reel spins when a fish is on the line and you jump on it to reel it in. I've never been sport fishing to know the feeling of reeling one in or seeing one reeled in. After some time waiting for something to hit and everyone getting tired, they put the smaller poles in the water and allowed people to hold them trolling. This is how we caught the fish we did catch that ranged in size from probably 12-20". They put up a little fight and we lost a few along the way that could've been much larger but we'll never know. Upon return, a neighbor boat gave us a 25 lb fish they caught since the crew was cleaning our catch. I don't eat fish but my wife is very happy with what we brought home. The crew was very helpful in trying to provide a pleasurable experience by helping with the poles, advising, and cleaning fish to take home. Overall a great experience and we would likely return hoping to catch something larger.
