Avoid 1 Fish 2 Fish & CVROI - Filthy Home, Cockroach Infestation, and Poor Service We rented 1 Fish 2 Fish for the week of Sept 13-20, 2025. The listing advertised a "beautiful new home" -- what we got was filthy, infested, and absolutely not as advertised. The home had stained linens (what looked like urine), black mold in bathrooms, hair in showers, sticky furniture, and dirty dishes. When a deep clean was finally done, it disrupted hundreds of cockroaches, making the home uninhabitable. We had to get a hotel for safety and hygiene. The emergency line was not answered, and customer service was dismissive throughout. We were eventually refunded (minus insurance), but only after repeatedly chasing and being treated like we were the problem. I do not recommend this property or working with CVROI -- their customer service is slow, unhelpful, and defensive, even in situations involving health hazards. read more

Office staff was nice but house (Calico Cat) left a lot to be desired. Old and unsafe oven that sparked when we tried to use it, very cheap kitchen appliances, windows you couldn't open, and a/c that failed to cool the bedrooms. Furniture was worn beyond belief. Even the toilet seats needed replacing. We have been renting homes on the North Carolina coast for many years. This was by far the worst. It appears many other customers have been deceived by Coastal's pictures and property descriptions, too. I did leave several reviews on their website, but they have failed to respond or publish them. There are just too many other choices in rental companies. I won't be using Coastal Vacation Resorts again. read more

Rented a house on 72nd St that was a slum with cockroaches, windows that didn't open, filthy refrigerator, broken furniture. I called them the next morning and they said they would send a maintenance man and exterminator. I wasn't about to leave contractors alone with all of my things so I declined. I checked out the next day when I found even more cockroaches. I looked at the reviews for this property that weren't there the I booked and they all said the same thing. So nothing had changed and they knew it. Then they said we don't refund your money. The woman wouldn't even look at me and the owner wouldn't post my review. Before I share details, I will note that I have made 2 attempts to contact the company before writing this review. Operations Manager, Amy must STILL be in the meeting she was in Wednesday morning (5 days ago) when I called to address multiple concerns after not receiving any contact from my list of complaints upon arrival last Saturday. Bree assured me that Amy would be in contact once she was out of her meeting. I am still waiting on her to contact me. I have rented from Coastal Vacation Resorts Oak Island since 2015, and have never had an issue with them. This time was a whole different story. For starters, I rented a different house than the one I usually rent because this home was supposed to have a screened porch and the other one does not. That is the only reason I chose Serendipity over Tropical Breeze this year. (photo of ad attached) There is no screen on the porch. Serendipity has beautiful photos on the website, but the house is a literal dump in person. There are roaches all over the place, which I know is common on the island due to the water, but this house belongs to the roaches at this point. I'm sure it did not help that there were nasty dishes left in the dishwasher upon our arrival. I am attaching a screen shot of my initial email to the company. Tuesday evening, right after returning to the home, an old beat-up truck with music blaring pulled into the driveway. They just walked up the home and grabbed the trash bin. Once we were noticed on the balcony, she said "oh, we're just pulling your trash to the curb, tomorrow is trash day." ummm ok. I was aware and had planned on taking it to the curb before bed. I have never had someone show up after dark, music blaring, and just walk up to the house like that. It was a shock to me. On top of that, the town never came and picked up our trash the following day! I have read some of the more recent yelp reviews and they are spot on, this company does not care to communicate with guests once they have received their payment. When I arrived on the island to check in, I found my packet (pictured) among several others in the after hours check in bin. (it was not after hours) my name, the address to the home, the code to get in, and keys in the packet were all there for just anyone to grab or see. That made me feel uneasy from the beginning. I have always checked in with someone at the company, never by just grabbing a packet from the bin. Not to mention I had to go to the local Dollar General immediately after getting to the home and purchase cheap rugs for the bathrooms and light bulbs if I wanted to use any outdoor lights, they were burnt out. This was an all-over poor experience, and I would not have been nearly as upset if someone had actually acknowledged my concerns from the beginning. read more

Rented a property with Coastal Vacation Resorts at 924 Dolphin. After arriving, we discovered that the TV did not work and the internet password given to us was not correct. We attempted to try to fix ourselves with no success as Coastal Vacations Oak Island was closed until Monday and the emergency number was only for "emergencies." The yard had trash in almost every bush, there was random junk in the middle of the carport that was a tripping hazard. In the bunk bedroom, there were holes in the wall, the counters had sand on them when we arrived, and there was unused computer cords laying everywhere. Also there were electrical outlets that did not work. This home had not been prepared for our arrival and was not renter ready. Furthermore, the staff has yet to contact us after promising someone would address our concerns when we checked out. Kept telling us that the property had just been sold. Definitely will not use this company again. read more

We are currently staying at a rental on Caswell Beach and we are very disappointed with the house as it doesn't quite match up with the way it was advertised. I would recommend this rental to anyone who: Wants to arrive and find the rental to be flithy. We are convinced it wasn't cleaned before we arrived. The windows were literally sticky with handprints and other suspicious bodily fluids. Same for the countertops. If you like saggy, discolored ceilings, please rent this place. Oh, and busted closet doors. And a washer full of sand and a drier so crammed with lint that it won't work. Warnng: bring lightbulbs and beware...the furniture is shabby. I mean SHABBY. The beds are so lame and uncomfortable, like a cheap flophouse. Also, the TV doesn't work, so there's that. Please help me salvage my vacation! read more

Since we are unable to rate the house itself ( BANANA HAMMOCK) We will leave our rating for Coastal Vacation Resorts instead. Awful. House was filthy and disgusting. The living room furniture so smelly we asked for extra linens to cover them. Too many years of wet dogs and bathing suits ( and possibly urine ) on them. Beds awful and uncomfortable. Kitchen stuff full of unnecessary items. Cabinets full so you have no place for a week's worth of food. So many light bulbs burned out we purchased our own from Walmart. Ceiling fans did not spin. We rented a golf cart ( later returned ) because the outside electrical plug did not work ( for charging it ) When we called Coastal they sent a guy out who said "That's gonna need more that what I know how to do...." And never heard another word about it. Golf cart people were very kind to refund our money. The list goes on and on. The maid service left a bar of soap from previous renter with hair wrapped around it in the shower. A pair of underwear and slippers also found under the bed that was held up by books. Here's an idea Oak Island - open checkin and checkout days to Friday Saturday and Sunday so your maids, grocery stores, gas stations are not CRAZY every single Saturday. read more

Unfortunately, this company has absolutely no concern or care for the comfort and well being of their customers who are paying good money to rent from them. The first night we arrived the smoke alarm went off at midnight. We were all sound asleep and upon calling the nonemergency number we were told to evacuate the house until the fire department could check it out. They found nothing so the rental company sent out their maintenance guy the following night at 8pm! He proceeded to remove all of the batteries from all of the smoke alarms. The batteries were never replaced the entire time that we stayed. My entire family, -2, could have easily perished in a fire in that house with no smoke detectors. Not to mention it's illegal not to provide them in a rental in NC. The rental company had no concern and no sense of urgency to replace or repair the smoke alarms. The second issue we had was the fact that the house was bug infested. We contacted the rental co 4x's and we're promised that someone would be out that day, each time. That never occurred, so we had to deal with the bugs for the entire week. It was so bad that my nephew took an ice cream cake out of the freezer to let it sit for a few minutes so he could cut it. Within 10 minutes I walked over to the ice cream cake and it had 6 to 8 roaches running all over the top of it. In the trash it went, a $65 ice cream cake! Every time we turned on a light, tons of bugs scattered. It was horrible. We stayed at the Beach House. After we left, we did receive a 200.00 inconvenience credit, but no apology or ownership for the lack of communication and problems that we had during our entire trip. The fact that there was no communication from the rental company speaks volumes for their lack of customer service and they truly do not care about the comfort and safety of their patrons. We will never rent from them again. PS- we will be returning to Oak Island though! Gorgeous place! read more

My family and I have rented from Coastal Vacation Resorts, Oak Island every year for the last five years and have nothing but great experiences with the staff and the homes we have rented. We have previously stayed in Blue Marlin which is a beautiful and well maintained home close to the pier. Any issues or concerns we may have had were handled both expediently and professionally. Well, after many calls to their office, they tell me that the manager I need to speak with is not in. They never call back. On my last call, Brooke who answered the phone gave me one excuse after another why it's perfectly acceptable for them to have the housekeepers show up after 5pm on the day we are checking in, after they gave us the key and let us walk into the dirty house. It's clear this is just how they do business. Renters are a commodity they are providing to landowners, and they aren't concerned with providing a good service to the guests. read more

We were unable to inhabit our beach house rental due to Tropical Storm Isaias. Coastal Vacation Resorts refuses to refund our $250 damage deposit because they are angry we consulted our credit card company for reimbursement of other charges. It is Coastal's responsibility to refund the damage deposit. Be aware their travel insurance carrier is several months behind in processing claims. Coastal staff provided poor customer service throughout, and were rude to my husband over the phone. read more

We have been coming to Oak Island for ten years. We have always used a different company to rent a beach house. I made the mistake of using coastal vacations this year. This will be the last time we use this company. The house does not have its own WiFi, even though it advertises that it does, the cleaning was not done on time which delayed our check in ( after driving 11 hours , we just wanted to get in and it was after the check in time), the vacuum cleaner doesn't work and almost caused an outlet fire, there were flies when we got here and the people at the company keep telling us to close the doors... we have not been leaving any doors open. The management company doesn't know if they can get us a different vaccume , this house is carpeted and it's impossible to clean without a vacuum. During a storm, the roof leaked. It all adds up to a not properly maintained house and a company that just blames the renters for every issue instead of managing the property properly. We learned our lesson! If you want bad customer service, then use this company! We rented a house on the beach for a week. When we arrived, the house was clean, linens ready, and everything was fine. We did enjoy the beach that evening. The next morning, we did get out on the beach for a couple of hours. After we had lunch, we wanted to go back out to enjoy the water, but the beach was being cleared off and bull dozers and dump trucks were brought in. The town was doing work to rebuild the dunes. Now, we specifically rented a house oceanfront because both my husband and son have a medical condition where they are not able to walk far without blistering. Because of this work, we were not able to access the beach at the house, severely limiting the access for both of these guys. This work continued from Monday until Thursday. Fully half of our vacation taken over with this mess. Now, not just the access, but the noise of dump trucks anywhere from 6 in the morning until 8 at night...and even though we brought bikes to enjoy, with those dump trucks on the road, that was not a possibility. As we contacted the rental company the day this started, all the response we were given was to have them take our information and they would have someone call back. The next day still no call back so we called again. This time they said that they were going to find out when the work would be done and then said they would call back. We did get a call back the next day. To use their words 'I know it's no consolation, but they told us the work would be done by the end of the week.' They said they got in touch with the homeowner and the homeowner wasn't notified of the work. Essentially, it's not their problem so they don't care. As a business person, you must understand that when things are not right for your customer, you make an effort to make them happy. Coastal Vacation Resorts Oak Island obviously does not care whether the customer is happy, as long as they fill that reservation space, they wash their hands of anything else. I think that if you are a rental company, you have a responsibility to notify customers of issues that may affect their experience. If I wanted to drive a mile to get to a beach access, I could have rented a house further out and saved money. Or had we been told ahead of time, I certainly would have asked to move to another location where the work was not being done that exact week. It is really poor performance from a company to act like they can do nothing for you, and they have no responsibility on keeping up with essential conditions of a location you are renting. I know I will continue to say it to anyone who will listen, do not waste your money supporting a company that says 'It's no consolation but....' read more

Disappointing rental this year -- 525 Ocean Blvd West, Holden Beach, "Chesapeake" -- first week of August. The air conditioning did not work properly, the roof leaked when it rained, there were broken and burned out lights in virtually every room, one of the ceiling fans sounded like it was about to fall out, and the house was in a general in a state of disrepair. Unacceptable for a $4,000/week beachfront rental. I would suggest you avoid this property, and based on our experience I cannot recommend Coastal Vacation Resorts. read more

There is no way I would ever rent from Coastal again. We have rented from them for years and the past two have been bad experiences. Last year, we stayed and found roaches. When we notified the staff, they made it a joke and reminded us we were in a tropical climate. We left after 5 days because we couldn't take them anymore. This year was the same. We chose to leave after 3 days. Obviously, pest control is not something that this management company is on top of. We've stayed all up and down the east coast and have never had issues with roaches. We rented Tucker's Choice for a week from this company, and we arrived to find dirty underwear, used soap in the shower, dirty silverware in the drawers, food on the floors, candy wrappers in the dresser drawers, a tv that didn't work because it was missing a remote and a few other misc electrical items. We contacted this company quickly, and they offered to send a cleaning crew again, but we declined ( because we already cleaned ourselves ) After four days they still have not fixed the other electrical items or brought a remote for the tv. This rental company did not ensure this house was ready for us, and was incredibly rude in the process. We would not recommend this house or this rental company! Rented Mol Sea with hopes of having a great family vacation! This was our first and last experience with Coastal Vacation Resorts! We could not check in until 5pm due to cleaning with Covid-19, however when we did check in the house clearly had not been cleaned at all. There was trash in every room of the house! The floor was absolutely filthy! The ceiling had clearly been leaking for a long time and looked terrible. The plaster was literally falling from the ceiling! There were live and dead bugs! I went to use the restroom and had a very large bug staring me in face!!!! Luckily I always bring cleaning supplies with me!! We were provided with the wrong wifi information! The back bedroom smelled as if someone had urinated in it. With the late check in I didn't want to interrupt our vacation with yet another delay and interruption so we did not call! We decided to clean, make the best of it and move on with our vacation! Needless to say a Hurricane interrupted our vacation and had to vacate due to a Mandatory Evacuation!! When we contacted the office they refused to give any type of refund!! We asked to speak with a manager, emailed requesting to speak with a manager and have yet to hear from a manager!! We spent a total of 3 nights in this house and paid $1,700 for the week!! I would love to know if the owners of this house actually know the way it's being managed. Because I would hate to know this was my house and it wasnt being taking care of properly!!! This company is an Absolute JOKE and this will be the last time with deal with them! read more

I used Coastal Carolina Vacation Resorts, Inc. for our annual girl's trip on Oak Island. They were very kind and professional from the start. I contacted them several times with questions because we had 9 people staying in the house we rented. They were always happy to answer any questions I had and/or make recommendations. The entire staff was great! Check-In and Check-Out was flawless. They explained everything. The house we stayed in (Copacetic) was everything we hoped for. We had one issue that the outside shower was not turned on. I called the office right before they closed and the gentleman was there the next morning and had it turned on for us. I would highly recommend them for any of your home rentals on Oak Island. I'll definitely use them again!! Great job, great company! read more

I rented a home during the first week of August, 2014. The washing machine was broken when I arrived, and after several service calls & delays, I was there all week long with an inoperable washing machine. When this company contacted the owner, the owner volunteered to reimburse me for one trip to laundry mat, however, I still had to go home with 4 large bags of laundry. (If I wanted to rent a place at the beach without a washer, I would have stayed in a motel room!) All that week, I was told they would " make it up to me", but then one day turned into two, then the whole week went by and still no washer. The owner ended up having to buy a new washer, which was being delivered the day I left. I do realize my contract states they are not responsible for appliances not working, and I know things do break down, however I was told when I checked out that in order for me to get anything for my inconvenience; they would have to contact the owner, as it's up to the owner whether to reimburse anything. They were going to email the owner, but instead I offered to send an email to them, to forward onto the owner, and was told they WOULD BE GLAD TO. I sent this company a very detailed email telling about my situation & everything that occurred during the week. I received an email back from this company saying they would forward my email to the manager & the broker in charge. I replied back asking if the owner would also receive a copy of the email, and was told YES, and THEY offered to give me a $75 credit if I stayed there next year. (This credit is from them, and not from the owner.) I told them I wasn't going to commit to 2015, until we come to a resolution for this year's rental. After several days went by, I contacted the company, asking them if they had sent my email to the owner of the property. They told me they WOULD NOT be sending my email to the owner, and they will only send the owner their invoice for their maintenance fee & the vendor's service call invoices. Also in this email, I was told to refer back to the contract I signed saying they aren't responsible for appliances, etc... I was very patient & understanding all week long, and they did acknowledge the good attitude I had about everything. I had no reason to get upset with them, because I thought they were honest, and they would work something out with me at the end of my stay. They lied to me while I was standing in their office, as well as, lied to me in their email, about contacting the owner for me. I wasn't asking for a full refund or any amount in particular, as my email to the owner stated "I am asking for you to consider my side of this situation, and ask you to reimburse me with what you think is fair". I do not feel what I was asking for was out of line or uncalled for. I am very disappointed they keep telling me they would make it up to me, and then, in the end, I am the one having to pay the price for the inconvenience. read more

The people who work there are very nice and friendly, BUT you had better read EVERY SINGLE LINE and go over everything with the agent or you will get hit with fees you shouldn't. Case in point, my wife and I, after of 4+ years of renting, are getting hit with professional cleaning fees for the carpet. Thing is THE OWNER KNOWS THE CARPETS ARE TRASHED. When we moved in we were offered new carpet or keep our cats. The carpet was horribly stained and was in dire need of replacing after the last renters left, but, in the most recent lease, its our job to get the carpet professionally cleaned and NO ONE LET US KNOW UNTIL AFTER WE LEFT TO TELL US THIS. Nor did they go over it with us when we were getting ready to sign it. It was simply hilighted and buried in the depths of the multi page lease. We also spoke with the rental agent during the move out process, and she never mentioned it. Instead of replacing the carpets as they needed to be for the new tenant, THEY opted to keep the thrashed carpets and charge us instead. Second, the cleaning crews they hire are second rate at best. When we took the place, it was still dirty and even had deflated ballons tied to the master bedroom's ceiling fan, and WE'RE getting hit with excessive cleaning fees. My advice to the next renter of this property is RUN and watch your back as you do it! read more
