They are fraudsters. Their pet policy is unclear. They won't allow me to being a 5 week old bottle fed kitten to the rental. They say they won't refund my $3000 unless they can re-rent the house. We came as a small family vacation and the first 3 days were more trouble then what we should have gone through. Terry-Larr is not a place to stay 1st night myself and son's mother in law stayed up ALL night due to spiders, (Brown)cockroaches and some other kind of bug. We spent our night try to make sure the spiders stayed away from kids and grandkids. No sleep for us. 2 Pads on the bed were stained yellow. 2 comforter were also stained The carpets were so gross we couldn't put our 6mo old down nor could we let our 4 year old play on the carpets The other floors were so dirty and sandy that our feet became dirty within a short period of time being there. 2nd morning it was noted that the bathroom sink still had toothpaste spit on the faucet. We would have noticed this the first day but we didn't brush our teeth because we were on bug control. There where nails coming up from the deck, again unable to let the kids play out there nor were we able to comfortably walk on the deck ourselves One of the balusters was not fully attached and the kids could fall through. Some of the outlets had no covers, also a huge concern with the kids. No smoke detector in the main area of the home The outside shower didn't work. The first 3 days my son and wife complained about the king size bed sinking in the center. So the 3rd day we had to have someone come out to fix that. They ended up so tired they left Thursday. So due to it supposed to have been a family vacation myself and my son's mother in law left Friday. So this has been the worst vacation we have EVER had and will not be returning to this home. We will have second thoughts about even renting from this rental company again. We will NOT advise anyone to stay here or use this rental company. The only reason we gave it 1 star is because of it's location. I spent so much of my time on the phone calling the rental company and organizing maintenance- several times, house cleaners, bug control, carpet cleaners that my 1st 24 hours wasn't spent as planned with my family. It was a waste of my time and money that I will not get back. I am a nurse, I work 60hrs a week and need a relaxing vacation with my son and his family. Sadly we won't get this time again until next year and it will not be spent here. read more

My opinion/experience: The view from the 2nd balcony of "American Dream" is incomparable. The beds were comfortable; kitchen was well-appointed. Location can't be beat, steps from Ruby's Coffee and Kokocabana on the waterfront. The bad: asked if there were streaming services available. Was told no streaming, no Internet, no smart TV. Wrong on all 3. Was given 2 wifi passwords, neither of which worked at first. Bath ceiling mottled with gray mold, ugh. Shower head caked with pink mold. Shower curtain had a foot of pink mold on the bottom. Not cleaned for weeks. Same with the kitchen sink sprayer. I cleaned them, as well as the mildewed outdoor furniture. No icemaker, so one would expect ice cube trays. Nope. Refrigerator shelves were gross around the edges. Multiple burned out light bulbs; clock had a dead battery. Bedroom and living room fans did not work. Saw 3 palmetto bugs in the kitchen; something else was biting our feet at night. A pest inspector (whom the mgmt. company insisted had to come for 2 hours on my husband's birthday) didn't find anything. Next day, a young man showed up unannounced, didn't wait for us to answer the knock and just came in. Then I got an email asking for $100 for an optional late checkout (?!) I registered a complaint about all of the issues and the response was (paraphrasing) "we understand but you didn't report it all" - not true. They finally offered a small partial refund. Not acceptable. At a loss to understand the "perfect 10" reviews. Maybe not real... in any case, buyer beware big time. All they care about is the money. read more

DO NOT USE THEM! When you have issues, they completely ignore you. Our property had a broken ice maker with mold inside, the dishwasher did not work properly, all four chair by the pool were broken and clumps of dog hair were stuck on the outside of the HVAC vent. Also black mold was present as well as not use of the elevator (forced to use dangerous spiral staircase). Presented these issues to OIA on the first day of our visit. They sent someone by on Day 2 to look at them and take photos. Never heard back from them!!! read more

They admitted they owed me a refund following a cancellation because the property was re-rented but they have not paid it (now months past the stated refund window). I have called and left dozens of voicemails and they will not call me back. Ridiculous, no way to run a business. So disappointing! We arrived at Splendid Days on Sunday, July 7 after driving 5 and a half hours at 4:15pm (check in was at 4) to find that the housekeeping staff was still there. We offered to drive around, but one of them wanted to let me know that they were very concerned about a smell coming from the hall bathroom and she wanted me to check it out. Immediately upon entering the rental, I was struck with how dirty and run down it looked. The pictures on the website make the house look so much cleaner than it actually is! As for the bathroom in question, she said they had cleaned it several times but felt like they couldn't get rid of the smell. It seemed like the smell mainly originated from under the sink, in the cabinet where the pipes are. She said they had reached out to maintenance but they weren't responding so she urged me to reach out as well which I did but never heard back. I also reached out to Oak Island Accommodations, but no response from them either. We are now certain that there is a serious drainage/plumbing issue within the entire house. Armed with our own cleaning supplies as well as the fact that we had already paid for the week, we decided to try to have a good time! We also wanted to take advantage of the kitchen and cook several nights during our vacation, including that first night. We were disgusted to find that nearly every single pot, pan, plate, and utensil was dirty. Later we found out that the toaster and an eye on the oven didn't work correctly. The AC vents were all continuously dripping with condensation (one even dripped constantly onto my daughter's top bunk bed) and one vent in particular in the living room was hanging from the ceiling. In addition, every closet, drawer, cabinet, and storage space was cluttered and disorganized with random stuff just thrown in there. I didn't even want to utilize the closet and drawers in the bedroom! The next day we noticed that the outdoor shower was not draining properly. One of my favorite things about beach houses is the outdoor shower but we could not use this one due to the drainage issue as well as its lack of cleanliness. My son took one shower in it on our second day and after only a few minutes, there was standing water to his ankles. Gross! I also reached out to maintenance about this issue but never heard back from that message either. We also noticed that whenever you flushed the toilet in the "master" bath, you would hear a gurgling sound in the shower. When the housekeeper left on Sunday, she had left a large bag of linens from the previous tenants on the deck and assured me that someone would be there to pick it up soon. No one picked up that nasty bag of linens until Wednesday. This also after we had had a few heavy downpours of rain. The property also seems to have a pretty significant insect problem. We kept finding small ants crawling on the kitchen counter and found a significant amount of activity in the kitchen cabinets. There is also an outrageous amount of an unidentified insect in the outdoor area under the house and around the outdoor shower. My husband hosed down the area one day and he noticed that they hang around where part of the structure appears to have water damage and rotted wood. Other issues, although minor in comparison, were weak WiFi and tall grass in the yard. As mentioned before, communication with the rental company and maintenance was horrible. No one responded to 3 messages sent. Our family travels a lot due to kids' travel sports, visiting family out of town, and just to get away (as was the case for this trip-- we were actually celebrating my oldest daughter's graduation and birthday!) and we have always had great communication with other rental/lodging companies. Unfortunately that was not the case with Oak Island Accommodations. This was our first experience with the company and sadly, it will likely be our last. The one positive this property has is its proximity to the ocean. Thank goodness since that is where we spent most of our time! Oak Island is wonderful! Unfortunately, we decided to leave a day early since the weather looked rough and we didn't want to be stuck in the house the house the rest of the time. read more

Checked in a day late... The property was left unlocked, filthy floors, urine in the toilet, a used condom beside the fire pit and blow up toys (plastic) stuffed into the fire pit. Busted outdoor furniture and piled high crap pile in the bottom part of the house. In addition there were extra keys in the property... This Company hasn't got a clue about how finding extra keys makes a family feel when renting a property for a week. Security concerns are not how you want to start a vacation. My advice is NOT to use this company to book a vacation. I am sorry I made this choice and will not waste my hard earned money ever again with this group. Part II- Last day at the seashell cottage. A few more pics... it is truly a shame that a piece of property which could be so nice is left so un kept and falling apart.... I have a propensity to want to clean things up that are dirty to straighten things up that are disorderly. If someone just came out here with a power washer a weedeater, and spent a day working and cleaning up all of the junk that is either broken or worthless this place might be a pretty nice property. read more

Rented OIA Don't Worry-Beach Happy Sept 5-12, 2020-$4200.00. We were told, the House was inspected, ready to occupy, once the "Renter Restrictions" were lifted from Hurricane Isaia Aug 3, 2020. A 5 bed/3 1/2 bath, Pool, Dog friendly w/dog run. Day 1 Sat. Front door would NOT open, no matter which way you turned the knob it would not budge. So we used the kitchen door, to get in. The Pool was like a "Black Lagoon", before the day we arrived OIA called said something wrong with the pool, they were working hard to fix and would be ready when we arrived. It was filled with algae and black gunk. Neighbors said it was like that for a while. There was insolation material hanging from the main-floor under the house above the stairs to the kitchen. Damaged PVC material on the ground bottom floor. Dog run could not be used, the gate wouldn't close properly. No white rockers on the ground floor, & on the back balcony No lounge chairs around the pool, as in the Rental photos. A beat-up deflated kids pool & broken chair along side of the fence near the pool. The grass on the entire property was 2 feet high. The floor lamp in the liv. room, no switch to turn on and off. The room with the bunks had large spiders on the wall. Remotes for TV and DVD players, broken held together with Duct Tape, needed batteries. Air conditioning was not working on the main floor, the temp monitor 80 deg. G/S advised did not Handle HVAC and the owner used a 3rd party venders for repairs. The Master suite: note written on the Toilet seat: must hold the lever down until the tank fully is empty or nothing will go down to go down. Note above the shower head on "Duct Tape", For shower to work turn on the water knob, go to the side of the tub, there is a fixture, reach up and pull down the lever. Large cockroach's 2" long, round, reddish brown that coming out of tub spouts. called G/S they laughed, called them "Water Bugs" said are very common on the island, when it rains.Two vanity sinks main-floor, lever drain water from the bowl, would not open or close. Master Suite had no spread, comforter or blanket, just sheets. The closet had bedding on the floor, pillows fallen from the shelves, went without, unknown if all was clean, used, or dirty. Under all furniture living room and dining table was Sand. Had to vacuum the entire house, all floors. In the living room chairs shake, vibrates for a few minutes then stops. Looked for big truck passing, there was no traffic. It happens often. Later the chairs and table in Dining area shakes. The vibrations are felt o 2nd / 3rd levels all during our stay. The Fire Alarms were sounding non-stop in the house. Maintenance changed all sensor batteries, unable to find sounding alarm. Found alarm in the main-floor Master, doorway to the bedroom and removed it. Co. Rep says Owners decision to use other 3rd party venders for repairs versus their maint. div.. Cal us later says HVAC called "Bells" will respond to the by 10:00 p.m. first night. No one showed up until afternoon the next day, Sunday. Day 2 Sunday Hvac says was frozen over, Huge chunks of ice on the ground below the air-conditioning unit. Said system will cool in 3-4 hours. It It never did. G/S said they had put in calls the following three days with no response. On Thursday, six days into our stay, the Maint. Div. brought by two window units, both were not big enough for the width of the windows, there was 4" opening for mosquito's and bugs from the black pool that enters the house. Everytime the family left the house if they were near the pool where the cars were parked bugs bit up their legs, my son had over 30 bites. G/S Sup. says still trying to reach Owner and requesting compensation for this $4200. Rental. Day 3 & 4 Mon & Tues House still hot, I stay behind waiting for repair staff, no show. Unable to stay on back deck, smells bad, bugs. G/S says even if we put dog in our indoor crate, will not enter if we are not there. "Safety reasons." Day 5 Weds In-Laws arrive, say the house kept moving/shaking during the night. He inspects says the house in not sound. He owns Welding and Constr. Co. Day 6 Thurs Yard service shows up "Banana's Yard Service," They blow ALL the cuttings into the pool and leave it! G/S is and they then inform us that pool parts and HVAC parts still on order. Still no repair man. OIA Maintenance Sup, good enough to send 2 window units, but not wide enough for window space, leaving 4 " open as mosquitoes and bugs from pool get inhouse. Day 7 Fri House is vacuumed by us for Sat. departure at 0800 hrs. Day 8 Sat We pull all linen and Bag same. Rental: 7 Days have passed, Now being told the Owners wife will talk to her husband, as to compensation. No decisions on Compensation! And yet had the nerve to place another family in the home this wk. We put Good Faith in this Co. & this is what we got for our hard earned money. his beach rental home should be called : "Beach Disaster-Be Ready to Be Unhappy!" read more

This is an owner that currently uses their rental services but will be making a change next season. They sold a revenue management system that they failed to monitor. The most popular week of Oak Island is July 4th. Due to their lack of management of the system, we lost revenue with no reasonable resolution provided by management, only excuses. read more

We have been going to Oak Island since 2009 and have always stayed in an oceanfront home and have always had the best time. Prior to this year, Oak Island Accommodations has been wonderful. They have been responsive to any problem we have had. One year, our home was not going to be ready for our stay because of a delay in repairs. OIA PROACTIVELY called us and offered us another home, larger than the one we had originally rented, with all the amenities we required, and at no extra cost. We appreciated their service and felt valued as customers. This year was a different story. We put down a deposit for a week in May in an oceanfront home. In April, we received an email informing us about the beach renourishment that was taking place to restore eroded beaches. Since the work was to be completed by the end of April and we were going in mid-May, we took little notice. However, we received another email four days before our trip informing us that the dredging company had received an extension and the work would be completed by midnight on the Saturday we were to arrive. Two days before our trip, we called OIA and spoke with a lady who seemed to know very little about the renourishment. She promised to find out what she could and call us back the next day. When we received no return call by mid-afternoon the next day, we called OIA again. We spoke with a different lady who seemed to know a lot more. She did not know if they were working near our house, but she reiterated that the city website said the work had to be finished by midnight, Saturday. When we arrived at our beach house, we went to the back porch and immediately saw that the work was being done about 8 houses to the east. It was somewhat noisy, but the beach in front of our house was open for business. And the work was to be completed by midnight. When we took our walk the next morning, we were surprised to find the work still going on, and the work area had moved to within four houses of ours. When we questioned the man who was guarding the work area, he informed us that his company had received a second extension and that the work would be going on, 24 hours a day, for the entire week. That night we could not sleep because of the constant clattering of the tracks on the bulldozers as they moved sand, the constant beeping as they backed up, the big flood lights that shone through every window of our house, and the shuddering of our house as the bulldozers worked. When we got up the next morning, we saw that the work area had been extended to in front of our house. We went to OIA on Monday morning and asked to be moved. At first, we were told that was impossible, but a little perseverance resulted in a person who said she would look into whether there was anything available. She called an hour later and said they had no oceanfront houses available (even though the beach was practically deserted all week) but she could offer us a condo on Caswell Beach. Feeling like we had no choice, we moved into the crap condo. It was far inferior to the house we had chosen and previously rented years before. The view was obliterated by a huge sand dune covered in vegetation. The TV and DVD player didn't work. We also had no wifi the first night because the information was well hidden and unreadable when we finally found it. There were light bulbs burned out. Several electrical outlets didn't work. The microwave could only heat water and cook popcorn. We had to throw out the frozen dinners we had purchased. When we sat on the balcony, we were driven inside by cigarette smoke. In short, it was a disaster. This was NOT the OIA we had dealt with in previous years. We had to initiate the discussion about moving. While the beach renourishment was not OIA's fault, they should have been proactive to find a similar or better house for us instead of a second rate condo. Rather than the relaxing beach vacation we were looking forward to, we left a day early with a bad taste in our mouths. read more

Too bad you can't give a 0 star review, because I would. We rented "Fitz Us Too" from 12/26/2021 - 1/2/2022. This is not a negative review of the home itself, the home was very nice and in a great location. This is all about Oak Island Accommodations (OIA). We did choose the house specifically for the elevator as we have 2 family members with mobility problems who have great difficulty maneuvering on stairs. When we arrived the evening of 12/26, the elevator was inoperable. We called OIA and left a message (due to the holiday and Sunday check-in, which by the way, was also a problem, but that's not the main issue) They sent out two maintenance people who seemed unfamiliar with the house or elevator. They were unable to do anything to help us and went on their way. I called OIA to see what they were going to do for us (reimbursement wise), as we really needed the elevator. Their response was to send one of the repairmen back without our knowledge. We ran into him wandering around under the house. When we questioned why he was back, his response was "because someone here keeps calling to complain and they told me I couldn't leave until the elevator was fixed." He also stated he wasn't authorized to fix the elevator. We again called OIA and told them to send the repairman home. On Day 2, we waited for a call from OIA which never came. We called them and they sent out another of their repairmen, who chastised us for not answering the doorbell that we could not hear on the top (main living area) floor. He wandered around looking for the elevator electric panel, told us he'd gotten the elevator door to open, but couldn't get the elevator to move. He left, after asking us if we knew who had installed the elevator. (Really? we just rented the house) Day 3, we wait for a call. None came. When we called we were told they had not yet contacted the elevator company. No explanation as to why. Day 4 -Our 83 y.o. father/grandfather/great grandfather fell down the steps, broke his thumb, and, embarrassed and sore, decided he would end his vacation and go back home. We did not call OIA that day. They did not call us. Day 5- We waited again for that elusive phone call. It did not come. We called OIA and they said they were having Port City Elevator (PCE) come out today between 10 & 12. Port City Elevator contacted us, told us when to expect them, arrived on time, and spent less than 15 minutes checking and replacing a dead battery. He double checked to see if there were any further problems. The elevator worked fine from that point on. Too late for grandpa, though. This was a very simple problem with a very simple solution, had OIA just followed through on anything. When we asked about compensation for our 5 days without an elevator, we were initially told that there was no guarantee our house would have a working elevator. After pushing harder, they said they'd give us $300 for our trouble, take it or leave it. In summary, OIA offers nothing but excuses, never a solution. They repeatedly lied to us. After contacting the homeowner directly, we found that they also lied about us to the homeowner and lied to us about the homeowner. For what reason, is beyond me. We have rented houses from this company for years with very few problems. This time was ridiculous and we will never rent from OIA again. read more

EDITED: I'll change to three stars because I have reached a resolution. After reaching the president of the company, we were compensated for the five days my mother could not leave the home. Her response was exactly what I wanted. I just wish we could have gotten that type of service from the people working in the office and, of course, I wish the maintenance supervisor, Erin, hadn't totally ruined our vacation. ZERO STARS ---- My family rented a home called Pier Pleasure because it had an elevator and my mother uses a wheelchair. They were aware that this was a necessity. A few hours before check-in we were told the elevator was being "finicky" but were assured it was being taken care of and would work for the couple of days before the elevator repair person could get there. Maintenance got it working for her to get into the house, and then for almost five days she was trapped on the third floor of the house unable to leave as poor communication and lack of competency delayed the right person being sent until three days later, and it took two days to complete the repair. I set up a meeting to speak to someone about compensation and the person with whom the meeting was set, Erin, refused to show her face, instead sending an underling who said himself that he had no authority in the situation. After we demanded she come in to answer some questions, she showed up and told us she got off work in 8 minutes and couldn't stay to talk to us. We were offered very little compensation for the five days of lost vacation time and cannot even get someone to return an email or voice mail about a resolution. In addition to this major problem, they do a terrible job managing properties. There were many, many things not being taken care of in what could be a nice property. Do NOT rent from these people. They are dishonest and should not be in the hospitality business as they are the least hospitable people I have ever encountered. read more

We are at the rental LOW TIDE within Oak Island on the beach for the week of July 4th 2023. We have cockaroaches, no electrical outlets in the bathrooms, we are blow drying our hair in the bed rooms. No hair dryer, beach towels, umbrellas or beach chairs. We traveled from Coloardo. Two of the electrical outlets aren't covered. The furniture is stained , we had to cover them with sheets. We have called the main office for assistance, help , asked for a discount or move us to another proerty with no avail. For the high cost of thee rentals andpoor value, it is my recomendation to NOT rent properties in OAK ISLAND. read more

Oak Island is the most disgusting place and people I have ever encountered. They have a no refund policy so watch out!!! Our Whale Cottage was filthy dirty upon arrival with hair in the shower, sand and dirt on the floors, disgusting/dirty area carpets and rugs, mold on baseboards and holes/cracks in the floor tile. Also, we had an electrical fire which burned the living area roof. The TV and internet went out after the fire and no one cared at the office of Oak Island accommodations. We couldn't even get anyone to clean up the fire damage mess. Needless to say we were inhaling smoke fumes as well as the mold smell. These people are despicable an care nothing about your safety. My whole adult family got time off work to go on a week vacation in October 2020 on Oak Island. Less than 24 hours to our check in time, they emailed to inform us that the house was not available. Then offered us a lesser option. We declined the offer and asked for our money back, in which we didn't get until we were back from our vacation. My family rented a house in June 2023. The microwave stopped working on Wednesday afternoon. I called and left a voice message. long story short I ended up calling 5 times over the next 3 days and still no one came out. By Friday afternoon there was still no microwave. Try going 3 days on vacation with kids and no microwave. We are very disappointed with the customer service and will definitely rent from another company next year. read more

Do not use this management company. We started with them in 2013 when it was still a locally owned company. It was sold out to a nationwide agency. They are now awful! This month alone I have been faced with $825.00 in additional maintenance and cleaning fees that I am told is "normal" rental use. They do not care who they rent to, do not enforce rental contracts, or have any iterest maintaining or protecting owners property. I had one check out this month that required 18 man hours to clean - I was told this was "normal". Photo below show how guest left rooms. We performed a deep clean two weeks prior to this guest - the house and rugs were spotless when they checked in. Use Margaret Rudd or Turnkey- they take care of BOTH owners and renters. read more

EDIT: thank you for the reply, OIA. Please know that vacating on Sunday and receiving a full refund was never presented as an option. Also please know that the options offered were a 3 BR house which was flooded and had the beach closed and construction equipment operating in front of it, a second row house with a green algae laden pool (I have a 4 year old-not acceptable), and a house not within walking distance to the beach. Yes I left two voicemails. I also called your office numerous times during business hours. I live in a different country. I trusted your company to provide clean and safe properties, therefore did not make a contingency plan to vacate immediately even had that been explained as an option. Where do I take my kids, parents and guests at midnight on a Saturday when we finally got there? You manage hundreds of properties and could not relocate us to a place without major issues. I'm not sure what kind of rental agency assumes the customer would be more successful than their entire team at handling issues associated with their properties. I also don't think it's fair to ask me to spend additional money to get us to another place when at no time could your office tell me any specific information on whether or not I would get a refund, and still HAS NOT REFUNDED MY MONEY. At NO TIME was vacating immediately and receiving a full refund offered. It was stated that while we attempted to resolve this issue, we would not be charged for the time we waited for your communications. I left because you wouldn't communicate with me nor would you give me any specific information regarding resolutions. Beware, renters. OIA assumes once you leave the beach and go back home you have no recourse. It is unfair because they have your money already and the only way to get it back is through litigation. They try to wait you out, hope you'll try not to ruin your family vacation, and just not have the energy to follow up with legal action later. Most renters are not local. We've used OAI as our rental company for almost 20 years. This year was a complete disappointment! The condo we rented was not only very outdated, but very dirty. OAI entered the unit without notification three time during our day to investigate a leak to the unit below then asked us to restrict our bathing to help determine the cause of the leak. We recently stayed in Oak Island for 2 weeks and used OIA. We have rented with them previously and had no major complaints. It pains me to write this, but this year was VERY disappointing. I called before we arrived with concerns. I was told to give it a chance and call when we got there. Ha! I will make it known, we tried several times to contact them. They "conveniently" called when we were at the beach. We had no interest in sitting by the phone waiting for them to call for hours.For starters the beach restoration project was a real bummer. The big trucks and beepers are FAR from relaxing. We actually got kicked off beach while enjoying a sunset. Wow. We rent the house we do so we can WALK to the beach. I don't particularly care to load up my car with the kids and fight for a parking space. We had to use two cars and chose West beach to avoid construction. Now add on gas and traveling time... plus no bathrooms! We understand OIA had no control over this situation, however there was no attempt to compensate for the inconvenience caused. Next, when we arrived the house wasn't close to being ready! It was past Check In time. Although the cleaning staff was friendly, the house was not clean. Gross stuff in sink, hair on floor, bleach left on counter ( ruined shirt), and it smelled of strong cleaners as well. In addition, The Wi-Fi didn't work. This was the second year in the row for this! We were told last year everyone was having problems. Seems that Is Not true. After almost a week of back and forth, it was fixed. I had to keep unplugging it. Seems silly, but it's something we look for a house to have for our phones and iPads. We have kids who enjoy watching movies on line in evening to unwind. Our data quickly drained. So much I had to call provider to change our plan. So, there's more $ down the drain for a second year. A new router or receiver was connected and it cleared up the problem. Absurd. The gentleman who fixed it was kind and accommodating. It's too bad the company isn't as helpful as him. Another issue was the door we had to use because of keyless entry. The screened porch door was broken. We tried to let OIA know, but no one came. Eventually it completely came apart! So we couldn't enjoy the screened in porch because of all the bugs. A huge disappointment! Another amenity we paid for and didn't get. We love sitting outside and enjoying the sounds. The door was in pieces because no one ever came! I couldn't believe it! We love the island. We enjoy the low key energy and the people there. This company did a poor job representing the town and the people we rent from year after year. If I was the owner, I would be highly upset of how terrible the renters are treated. I will be sharing this review on other sites as well. I hope you find a way to correct your errors and communication practices. This isn't what we expected or what we paid for. We work hard to treat ourselves and our children to an enjoyable 2 weeks. We rented with OIA a few years ago and were pretty happy with it. We decided to come back again this year with our whole family and baby grandson, staying at Stingwray Cove (formerly Landmark). I'm writing this review on day 5 of our beach week. It seems things have gone QUITE downhill since our last rental and that is a shame. The entire street and driveway was flooded when we arrived, which I understand is a weather event and outside their control, however, the driveway was a disgusting muddy mess for our whole trip. Nearby beach houses, managed by other rental companies, all had fresh gravel delivered and spread after the flood, but not this house. The house was fairly clean, which was a relief, but there were fleas. One son has bites all over his feet and ankles. He has pulled off dozens of live fleas from his legs and clothing. Our son's dog, who has never had a flea problem, and was treated systemically 10 days ago, has been scratching like mad since we got here. I have called several times and they told us they'd have someone come spray Tuesday. We cleared out and came back two hours later like they said - there was no sign anyone had come and there were still fleas. I called again this morning and they said they'd send the exterminator out again today. It is 4pm, I have stayed in the house all day to be sure they came, while my family went to the beach, and big surprise, no one has come. THIS IS INSANE. We paid way too much money only to have to deal with a flea infestation. We have been non-stop vacuuming and still finding live fleas in the vacuum canister. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY AND VACATION DAYS!! I tried to put a review of a specific property (2015 west beach drive) taken care of by Oak Island Accommodations, but realized they repeatedly ask if you are a robot if you try to leave a poor review. That's why this property has 4 stars on their site!?! So here is my review of Oak Island Accommodations and the property. This property is in great need of upgrades and management needs to take a look at what they are renting and how they are cleaned. We arrived to a large amount of gnats breeding and a POORLY cleaned house. The beds are cheap and old and the linens are cheap and don't fit the beds (they appeared to be donated by a closing hospital). The replaced deck is maybe 5x6 feet without covering and has 1 chair...1 chair! The dining room table is against the wall and only has 5 chairs (this property says it can accommodate 10). Don't think about cooking- it had 1 skillet that you couldn't cook an egg in and a rusted can opener. Just leftover pieces thrown under an open counter. The washer had a dirty wet dishrag in the bottom and the dryer had a full load of someone's linens. We did not touch them! My chest of drawers had a dirty jacket in it. Most decorations haven't been updated since 1962. The walls are the original dark wood with old scratches everywhere and no repairs if anything was replaced like the bathroom sink or door. Only 3 tiny lamps in the living area (very dark and depressing). The TV in bedroom didn't work so repairman and then Spectrum had to come out. Didn't work for 5 1/2 if 7 days. The owners scheduled AC preventative maintenance without notifying OIA. Lastly, the bathrooms. So small, you had to sit diagonal on the toilet or risk hitting your legs on the tub. Mold growing on the shower curtain so I guess that wasn't cleaned. The 1/2 bath- you had to turn sideways to get between the sink and toilet which clogged for no reason. This property could be nice with a little paint and a few upgrades. And OIA, you should be ashamed of not keeping up with your rental properties, your maintenance, and your cleaning crews! I guess quick cash means more than keeping repeat business (which you had til now)! For almost the same amount and a different company, my brother's house was awesome!! read more

Property Tide. 2630 E. Beach Dr. Oak Island, NC. Managed by Oak Island Accommodations Let me say that the location of this property is great. It's directly across the street from the beach with no houses obstructing the view. My husband and I went with our 2 children and spouses, along with 4 grandchildren. A pool was a must and we thought this location would be perfect. We we're wrong. 1. The house was filthy. We all actually washed our comforters before putting them on the beds. They had questionable stains that made us all uneasy. The closets had extra blankets that were balled up. It looked like they were thrown in. They we're nasty. 2. The floors were dirty (old grime). Baseboards were full of dirt and dust. 3. All furniture, including nightstands and chests of drawers were plastic. In fact, most of the furniture was plastic (the kind of plastic furniture usually used outdoors). There wasn't a comfortable seat in the entire house. The sectional sofa had no support or cushioning and this was the one piece of furniture that was remotely comfortable. 4. The throw rugs had sand spurs in them and the den rug shed white strings constantly. There was no carpet, which I can understand, but the broom was so old it wasn't useable. It was shaped like the letter J (hope that makes sense). 5. The kitchen cabinets looked as if someone threw the pots, pans, bowls, etc in them. I actually organized them myself to make cooking a little quicker and efficient. The shelf liner had dried food and stains on it. We had to throw a lot of our refrigerated food out as the refrigerator froze most of our food: milk, lettuce, lunch meat, etc. Of course a cold fridge is great but not when it freezes your food solid. No ice maker. 6. The bathrooms were the worst. Again, filthy floors. The shower curtain had mildew on it!!!!! The toilet holder and matching shelf weren't secured into the wall so we're unusable. One bathroom was obviously so soggy with water that we felt like the floor was going to "give away". 7. Pool wasn't clean. Trash in the water. Old deflated floats laying around the pool, with sand and dirt covering them. Pool noodle (1) was torn into about 4 pieces. You had to access the pool by going outside and reentering the gate. If you came in from the pool, you went out of the gate and up the back steps to the 5th bedroom. The door to go inside opened out, which meant you were standing on some steep steps and had to go to the top step to reach the doorknob, then you had to back down the steps because the door opened out. Very hazardous esp with the children. 8. The enclosed front porch (which we knew from the description wasn't air conditioned), had a squishy floor, most probably from water. 9. Washer and dryer was in a room in the carport. Again, the location was excellent. And we still managed to have a great vacation despite this mess of a house. We aren't a "fru fru" family. I know I've listed things that mays sound "picky". However, the main complaint from everyone was the overall uncleanliness of the place. We just expect that for the amount of money we spent, that the place be comfortable and clean. This was not. Beware!!! If you are anxious about Covid, would you rent a house that was blatantly obvious that it was not clean or sanitized? They take 2 hours off your vacation by making you check in late and check out early for extra Covid cleaning. They make you sign a waiver to not sue them if you contract Covid. We discovered after settling in that there was used soap in the tub along with hair in the drain. The house was not vacuumed, nor did it even have a vacuum onsite. That began the two weeks of worrying whether or not I was going to get sick. I called Oak Island Accommodations and got silence. Garbage and recycling bins were full. We called twice. They never picked it up. We had to store our used garbage in the house. No TV unless you have a Roku account. Outside spigot didn't work. The only way upstairs was a rickety spiral staircase. Listing says its 2.5 baths. No 1/2 bath. I have been renting with them for 20 years, now I am done. This is not the time to cut corners by not cleaning to save money. read more

Can I give negative stars? I am the person who 100% will give stellar reviews when warranted and think long and hard before giving a negative review. We understood that in the midst of a pandemic and then the island being hit by a hurricane that there would be delays in responses. As we were trying to figure out two weeks prior to our planned vacation whether or not we could even take it, we could not get a call, email or anything back from OIA. Finally, I figured maybe they would answer social media, which they did, telling us that others had to be answered first. Didn't help us much in choosing whether or not we needed to purchase plane tickets for some members of our party. Because we are resourceful and self-sufficient, we looked closely at the Oak Island evacuation orders and figured we would be okay. We finally got confirmation from OIA and we planned our trip, packing as much as possible, not aware of what might be available on the Island. The morning we were to check in, we got an email stating that each member of our party had to sign a waiver that we would not hold OIA responsible if we got COVID. We would not receive the code to the house until this was completed. Considering we were already well on our way, the waivers were signed under duress. Were we supposed to turn around and head back on a 12-hour drive? Once we arrived at the house, code in hand, the code didn't work. By the way, we were supposed to check in at 3:00 originally and then told to check in at 4:00 and we arrived at 4:15. We did not get into the house until almost 6:00 PM and the staff member who came from OIA was nothing short of nasty and rude and appeared to be bothered to have to come out to open the door for us. We never did get a code that worked. We loved the house itself (except for the dusty and gross air vents, gross outdoor shower that wouldn't lock, again, fixed with our resourcefulness, and the hose that needed special mental skills to figure out how to work) and it was nice to have the linens provided. However, on all previous visits with other rental companies, we were provided with a welcome package to include information such as when to put out garbage, wifi password, etc. We were provided with nothing and had to wait for the offices to open Monday morning for these. Monday we called because of a running toilet. We were told that someone would come and turn off the water. That was the last we ever heard. Nobody ever came to fix it, and we ended up with only one bathroom anyway for 7 people. Now, the next issue isn't necessarily the fault of OIA, but should have been disclosed. It turns out that where our rental house sat, when it rained, garbage floated down the street and to get to the beach, you had to wade through water that had been standing and smelled horribly. The water was so deep that if you didn't have an SUV, you needed to stay at home. Finally, the day before we were to leave, we were sent an email stating that our checkout time was now an hour earlier. That was enough. My husband did call and tell them that we would not be leaving earlier. Regardless, the linen company arrived at 8:00 am to change out the linens. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. PERIOD. AMEN. We will be back to Oak Island, but will NEVER use this company again. NEVER. read more

Splendid Days was the name of the house we rented. We arrived at 3:45 pm, you have to call to go in before 4, and were told the house had not been cleaned yet! Took a stroll on the beach, came back as cleaners were leaving. They were fast but the place definitely wasn't really cleaned. We had alot of issues such as a slow draining tub (they did come and fix it), an inch of dust on all the ceiling fans (yuck), dirty dishes in the cabinets, sagging floor in the kitchen in front of the sink, whole house smelled musty, one burner on stove was not working, if we used the stove or oven the fire alarm went off (no, nothing on fire or smoking), etc. Reported everything to OIA, said they would compensate somehow for having to wait to check-in, didn't happen. Also said they would call back to schedule maintenance and cleaning to come back, didn't happen. I have left reviews on their website and VRBO. No response from either. Very disappointing. read more

***Potential Customers Beware*** - I have been working in the area for almost two months staying at Oak Island Accommodation properties. Today a gentleman let himself into my property (my car was in driveway) claiming to be pest control and that he was going to be spraying outside. Still no idea why he would need to come inside the property if he was spraying outside... After multiple calls with Oak Island staff, I was told they would make a note that no one should enter the property (thought that was implied from the beginning of a reservation) and the pest control employee was getting "written up", but nothing more they can do since it's a 3rd party vendor. Be careful leaving belongings in your property because who knows what employees of third party vendors may help themselves too incase you're not home. Such an utter invasion of privacy and lack of accountability; will never use Oak Island again. read more

BUYER BEWARE - We just stayed 2/25-3/4/2023. Purposely rented a house with an elevator (that we had rented twice before) as we take my 89 year old mother-in-law with us. Upon arriving elevator didn't work. Found out from the neighbors the elevator was disabled not up to code. We called and they said they had no idea elevator was broken and after my husband called them out - finally admitted it was out of code. We asked for some $ back as we could have paid much less for a house with no elevator. Wouldn't return our calls all week - finally they came up with "it wasn't advertised as having an elevator" which is a lie - We've been renting on Oak Island since 2005 and in recent years 2-3 times a year. Lots of new management companies in the area - I would recommend using someone else unless you don't mind being lied to and paying for something you don't get. Oh and the dishwasher broke on Tuesday and was supposed to get a $100 credit for that - Still waiting for that. read more

We rented a beach house and the owner called the house the first day asking that we make sure we don't leave the outside lights on. He called again and I didn't answer the phone and unplugged it. He Later text and called our cell phone. OIA gave him our cell number. He complained that the light was left on the night before. He has four outside cameras. I then found that one of the cameras was pointed at the outdoor shower. I complained to OIA with no response. Had to call and text many times. The only way to get money back is to buy the travel insurance offered through OIA by Red Sky. But their policy is so limiting as to be almost worthless. I arranged a long-term, 6-month rental of a 'patio home' at Caswell Dunes - The Ninth Tee - through Oak Island Accommodations in good faith as I am moving to Southport and waiting for my townhome to be completed. I arrived to find an unkempt, poorly maintained and extremely dirty property. The condition of the 'home', its yard and its contents are disgraceful. Oak Island Accommodations AND the owner of the property should be ashamed. I have brought the following repeatedly to the attention of staff and only a fraction of the infractions have been addressed. Communication with staff was haphazard with three different employees contacting me about one issue and leaving the rest unaddressed. My calls and concerns would be passed from one 'department' - housekeeping, maintenance - with no one in particular taking 'ownership' of a dissatisfied client's concerns, especially those manning the front desk. That OIA would even accept this property to represent and rent out is unconscionable. After reading recent reviews, it would appear that what I detail here is now the norm rather than a fluke or an exception. Wow!! This company did an amazing job of preparing the home and maintaining it! We spent two weeks in Oak island and the first week we rented with a different company.. we were extremely disappointed with their rental etc but our second week and renting with Oak Island Accommodations was stellar! The home was clean, as advertised and maintained beautifully. The towels and linens were clean and they even have a little getting started kit with mini soap and toilet paper etc. when we noticed the pool was a bit Sandy, I called and they requested the pool to be cleaned by the maintenance team and it was done the next day! If you enjoy all these qualities then rent here.. If you also like someone stealing your money and saying they can do nothing to help you then rent here.. If you save all year long for the money to cover your rental and then only arrive to find out that you can not stay there due to the place being toxic full of bug spray, having lots of dead roaches and bugs all over the place then rent from here.. We rented the cottage Tranquility for a weekend in February. The heat didn't work in the cottage. We called and reported and they sent someone to repair but the servicer couldn't fix the heat. Oak Island Accomodations brought space heaters. The space heaters did little to warm the cottage and it was 52 degrees inside in the mornings. We asked for a partial refund and were denied.
