Easy to find, convenient parking, 3-4 tables inside and a homey vibe, and tons of menu options to mix and match. Also I'm just a girl, so portion was enough for me to both snack later and have another lunch. The rest of the people I was with, went on an ordered food. They came back with huge sides with barely any meat. Ox tails were so tiny and blah! They gave an adequate amount I suppose. The wings are pretty big, they're wing pieces. They were kind of soft and chewy I'm use to a crunch with my jerk wings. The warmer probably softened them up. The first Jamaican spot that I have visited in Mississippi. All in all it was a very decent experience. It's a cafeteria style set up where you can select a variety of main dishes and sides. I was torn between the jerk and the stewed chicken. Played it safe and chose the stewed chicken for now. The cabbage was cooked down enough to be tender and the sweet plantains were delightful. Looking for something different, we decided to try Coastline Caribbean. The restaurant is just north of Pass Rd on the west side of Hewes. Parking isn't obvious, so drive around behind the place for more options. There aren't many seats in the restaurant, and it is order at the counter. You choose from four plate sizes, chose an entree and your sides. I had the oxtail with cabbage and collards. My wife had the curried goat with cabbage and rice with peas. All was super wonderful. I have never had oxtail. I will make the drive again for that oxtail. Oh MAN was it good. So was the goat. We just wish it were a bit spicier. We made the mistake of using the hot sauce on the table without testing it first. It was so stinking hot it made us cry. But oh was it good. Beware of the hot sauce if you are sensitive to spice. The hours that Yelp has listed for this place are off...I've driven by the restaurant more than once when they were supposed to be open (according to the times posted on Yelp) but they were not open. However, I was finally able to catch them open today, so I was excited to try it! Unfortunately, they were out of oxtail so I just went with the jerk chicken. The chicken and plantains were cooked perfectly, but the rice and cabbage could have used more flavor. It took my by surprise when I saw the Jamaican flag as I was detouring around some traffic. Being from the islands myself I couldn't help, but stop although it was right between lunch and dinner. The food was very good and enough for two people unless you eat more than your share for one person... I enjoyed it tremendously and they had all the authentic trimmings including Ting soda!!! It made my day so much that to get the full effect, I took my meal to the beach a block away to eat it. I plan on getting lost there more often. Full disclaimer, this review comes from someone who has never had Carribean food before. So I have nothing to compare it to, but MAN it was YUMMY!!! As others have said, the parking is a bit strange. I didn't realize you could park around the other side. I just parked right off of Hewes where there are only 3 spots. As I got out of my car, before I even walked in, I could smell the delicious food. When you walk in there's one person plating the food and one person behind the scenes cooking and cleaning. There are a couple of coolers by the begining of the line. They have a variety of drinks including the peanut drink someone else posted about in another review. When it's your turn you pick: what you want to eat, what size, and what sides. I went with the medium Oxtails with extra sauce/gravy on the rice, rice and beans, and steamed cabbage. The server was very nice! He greeted everyone who walked in and didn't miss a beat making plates and taking payments. When I got up to pay, I asked if they accept cards due to a previous review that said they didn't. He said, "we take cards, cash, or you can do the dishes," with a big smile. I appreciated his humor even though he was very busy. I paid with my card, tipped in cash, and took my food to go. The first bite all the way to the last bite was AMAZING! In the medium size plate I got 5 oxtails. There was one that was a little tough where it probably wasn't fully submerged in the liquid while cooking, but the rest were all very tender and falling off the bone. They reminded me of beef tips except with a wonderfuly sweet and mildly spicy after taste. The rice and beans were very good! I did get extra gravy on the rice and beans so it probably did enhance the flavor. The big part for me though is that the rice and beans were both cooked all the way through. There were absolutely no hard or crunchy pieces. The beans were cooked dry beans which are far better than canned to me. The steamed cabbage was good. It had red and green bell peppers mixed in as well. This wasn't a highlight of the dish for me, but it was still good. I can't wait to go back and try other dishes!! read more
