It's not the hip spot it used to be. The polish tower has been pushed into the wall. The ambiance has changed. I made an appointment online for a pedicure with basic nail art. The text confirmation was missing words. I arrived early which was good because they took me early. Some people were waiting 20 minutes past their appointment times, so appointments are not honored. The manager checked me in and I showed her my nail art inspiration. She tried to push a manicure too, which is unacceptable. My nail tech was awful. I don't think she'd ever done nails before. She cut me and didn't want to get the Styptic, which is dangerous and a health concern. She tried to push callus remover on me. My tech didn't know how to do nail art so she tried and screwed up. She asked a colleague to help her and the colleague said no. She finally got the manager, who did the nail art, but it's not great. The other colleague walked by and laughed at the nail art and said something nasty. My tech didn't know how to use the checkout system. I used to love visiting Coatroom. My skin got bruised badly that I could see my red inner flesh on the side of my nails. I remember flinching every time she filed that particular nail but I didn't get a remorse or even an attempt at going gentler with the filing process, it made me wonder if the pain was in my head. She was somewhat aggressive with the nail file and buffer that I remember regretting ever considering doing my nails. Now I have some anxiety about if they even sterilize their nail files and buffers because I think they use the same files and buffer for all the customers. I haven't gotten my nails done in over a year, and one of my friends recently got into nails and had encouraged me to get mine done again. While on a walk, I saw that Coatroom was nearby my apartment so I decided to stop by spontaneously at around 11 AM on a weekday. They took walk-in appointments, which was nice, and I was instructed to wash my hands upon walking in. The interior of Coatroom looked pretty clean so I had high hopes. I wish I looked at the Yelp reviews first before coming in. Getting gel nails was $39, but since I haven't gotten my nails done in so long, I didn't know what to expect. I requested for white and no problems there. It took my nail technician over an hour to paint my nails which was pretty long based on what I've heard from other friends. The end results were pretty disappointing. I attached the pictures, but my biggest complains were how weird the cuticle lines looked and the overall messiness of the nail coats. The polish near the cuticle lines looked crooked and unprofessionally done. Additionally, I could see the gel polish on my finger pads since my nail technician did not do a good job cleaning the polish for a smooth shape or look. Additionally, the shape of my nails looked weird, too. To be honest, I don't really know how to appropriately describe how my nails looked besides "crusty" since I don't regularly get my nails done. To note, my hands were very dry that day as well, which definitely contributed to the crustiness. I just know they looked pretty bad considering I did pay money to get them professionally done. I attached pictures of my nails after my manicure if anyone's curious. I'm writing this review about two weeks since getting my nails done at Coatroom. Within a week, my nails began chipping. Additionally, the top parts of the polish would get caught in my hair when I wash my hair or something because the polish started peeling off. Not only did my nails look unprofessionally done, it was not a quality manicure whatsoever. Overall, I would not recommend this place and not surprised to see that the average is only a 3/5 on Yelp. After a long beach trip, my legs and arms are scratched up but my nails are still A+. The manicurists here are great but the entire process was disorganized. Here are some tips to make your process less painful than mine: -They don't honor appointments. I even called to confirm. However, when I arrived, Kim, (the nail tech I requested) was starting with another customer. There's no one at the register, all the nail techs ignored me, so I checked in and waited. -Don't let a random tech do your nails, and have a couple of colors in mind before coming. After 30 min of waiting, a lady shaped my nails. She didn't put much care into it, and my nails turned out slanted at the edge. She handed me a stack of nail colors, said "we don't have" to every color I picked, and tried to pull out some bright pink when I wanted a nude. -Kim is great! She stepped in and did my nails with a nice nude white she had. It wasn't the nude pink I wanted, but Kim did a beautiful job and was very meticulous. I came supper early yesterday, this lady started working on me ( and then when someone who came in who was getting something more expensive she stopped and went to her. I showed my nail tech a picture of what I wanted and the flowers are not the same and she didn't even follow the picture and added some dots onto my nail. The flowers she did were the flowers I used to do myself when I was in middle school. I would put dots in a circle and take a toothpick to connect it to the middle, which is exactly what she did. So the reason why I decided to try this place was because of the décor I saw when attending the taste of Arlington. I signed up and was advised I would get $5.00 off during my first visit. I called to schedule an appt because I was unable to set an appt thru the app for 2:30pm. When I arrived I stood in line to be checked in for my appt. When checked in I mentioned I had attended the taste of Arlington and was told I would get $5.00 off my service which the receptionist advised she would note and also take add'l $5.00 off for my friend's service as well. I waited by the drying the station to get serviced. The cube chairs were really small so if someone bigger needed to sit they would be uncomfortable. I typically get my nails and pedicure done at Mon Cheri Nails in Springfield mall which cost about the same for service but you get more of spa experience even when you select the standard. The standard mani and pedi includes paraffin treatment which is normally addl cost at other nail salons plus they have massage chairs and bubble massage. So rewind to my pedi experience at the coatroom. They place liner in the pedi bowl and place bath bomb in the water. I've used bath bombs from Lush and normally they are so strong the smell circulates the room which this didn't. I wasn't even asked which bomb I wanted but my friend was asked. The nail techs didn't even talk the whole time we were getting pedicures. I felt like I was getting a pedi in a bath of water. Prior to this pedi experience being completed three woman came in for Pedi's and one was serviced immediately while the other two waited in the pedi area with her. The receptionist came over to ask if they wanted water while they waited and also asked some other patrons but failed to asked my friend and I which I tried to brush off. Than as I waited in line to pay the bill I heard the receptionist quote the total to the two women ahead of me paying prior to swiping there card. When I got to the desk I reminded her of the discount which she disregarded and proceed to charge my card for both pedicures without advising me of the grand total as she did with the other patrons. While visiting a friend in Arlington I came in for a manicure and usually my gel nails last a good month before starting to peel at the bottom and here it sadly didn't last that long. At first I thought it looked fine but on FaceTime with my mother she thought it looked very poorly done. The color choices are also very less. They didn't even have a basic gray in gel. I recently moved to ballston Arlington in Nov 2020 and needed a new nail place. This place was right down the street so I thought why not! In the midst of a pandemic they were still able to take me and my aunt in as a walk in and were very accommodating. The place is clean & the massage chairs are bomb. I first got the owner, Brian, as my nail tech but moving forward he was always booked! The next time I got my girl KIM and I have been a loyal clients of hers since. I typically get a gel pedicure and manicure so I cannot speak for acrylics but just know that these employees strive for perfection and have never let me down. I am so incredibly disappointed with how my appointment was handled. Here's the full story: A friend and I came in at 5:30 for SNS manicures (including removal), and we were told to come back at 6. When we came back, my friend was immediately sat with someone and I waited for a few minutes at my seat. I was sat on a side where no one else was, and while I was a bit disappointed they didn't just seat us next to each other when they could have, I was fine with waiting a bit. Then the experience got worst. The woman who sat my friend and worked on her SNS removal rushed over and started working on my removal. She didn't even sit down - she was standing up and helping check out other guests while quickly working on my nails and making a bit of a mess with the acetone. I was feeling a bit stressed because of this because it was hurting at times because she wasn't being careful. I decided to let it go - she clearly was busy so whatever. She put my nails in foil and went back to work on my friend's nails. I then waited for around 20-30 minutes with foil on - in this time no one told me sorry about the wait or anything. Now I was getting annoyed. Another employee finally came over and started taking the foil off, also rushed, scraping off most of the polish but started getting impatient and giving up so she put the foil back on and went back to her original customer. (Listen, I know it usually takes two rounds of foil to get the polish off but she seemed to be quite annoyed by this.) I then waited for ANOTHER 20-30 minutes with the foil until finally, my friend's entire manicure was finished and I was sat in her seat. I was so annoyed and feeling impatient that I asked for no polish/manicure, just for her to finish the SNS removal and file my nails down shorter so that I could leave. She tried to convince me to change my mind and I kindly replied no thanks multiple times. She also refused to file my nails shorter after I asked because she said they look nice long (right after telling me they would break if I didn't get an SNS manicure). She told me to come back tomorrow to get the polish - I simply agreed just to end the conversation. So, I walked out of the salon after a full hour with no manicure and long nails that I had to cut/file by myself at home. My friend expressed that her manicure also felt rushed and she wasn't happy with the service either, but the woman did apologize to her. But I received no acknowledgement by any of the staff that I was waiting, no apologies for the long wait time. Just horrible treatment and service. They have a rewards system (Five Stars) but their system is always down so you can't check in to accrue awards or to redeem them. Part of me wanted to just try any technician but I stood my ground and requested the person that was actually confirmed for me. I typically get gel manicures but have wanted to try out sns for some time, so when I saw a groupon for this place I figured I'd give it a shot. The space is nice and welcoming, the staff less so. I didn't exactly expect anyone to roll out the red carpet, but my technician was pretty cold and gruff. The manicure looked nice when she was done, and I was excited about the results -- I was under the impression that sns/dip lasts around 3 weeks. In actuality, the manicure lasted about 6-7 days until huge chunks of polish started coming off. My typical gel manicure lasts around 2 weeks, so I was very disappointed. I event took spedNot worth it at all. My technician also cut my nails extremely short even though I did not ask for this -- I don't think my nails have been this short since infancy, honestly. The lady made me bleed on three different fingers when removing my cutilcules, then applied a polish chosen from the shelf which was way passed its useful life but she accepted to remove it (thankfully). I recently received an email stating I had a 20% discount for my next service at "Coatroom/Milan Nails". I have never visited Milan nails but frequented Coatroom when I lived in Arlington. I went in & got a gel mani & standard pedi. When I was paying for my service I was told the discount was "only for Milan Nails". Nowhere in the email does it state that. In fact, it specifically states "Coatroom/Milan Nails". When I put my number into the iPad for the rewards program AGAIN I was prompted with a screen that said I had 20% off my service. This time it only said "Coatroom". Still, the women at the desk were arguing with me, telling me I was wrong & the discount was only for Milan nails. I paid full price for my service & emailed the owner of the salon over a week ago & have not received a reply. I did not ask for a full refund, I simply want 20% of my service credited to my card.
