Not worth it though because I ended up needing more stretching - used thick fuzzy socks and a blow dryer at home. They made it seem more complicated than it was. Unfortunate. I bought a vintage Louis Vuitton messenger bag at a flea market in Spain that needed a lot of TLC. I took it to an LV store to ask about repairs, and they wanted over $4k to repair it when the bag itself cost no more than $2k during its prime (it's an older full size Bastille messenger bag from the early 2000's). I took it to Cobbler's Bench instead to get it fixed, and they did a fantastic job restoring it! They charged me about half of what LV wanted, but it was well worth it. It's like a brand new bag! I only wish I had taken before and after photos. They were very prompt too with the repair. I was expecting it to take about three months and they did it in about six weeks. Do not recommend for bag repair. The gentleman was wonderful & kind - however the work was terrible. Brought a vintage satin clutch in for small repairs (needed new glue at seams) & cleaning -- was not a success. The bag was very dirty upon pickup - did not look like they made any attempt to shampoo. The glue job was not complete (warped). Total cost was $167 --- and once I brought it home, realized how bad it was. I ended up using a mild detergent & cleaned myself (should have done that 1st) - looks a ton better. I am actually wondering if the bag was mistakenly set aside & never worked on - & returned to me by accident before the work was complete. It looked exactly the same as I left it. read more

I had a disappointing experience at this cobbler for several reasons: 1. Delayed service: I dropped off a pair of shoes on January 29th for sole repair and dyeing. I was told the work would take no more than 1.5 weeks, estimated Feb 7th or 8th, but the shoes weren't ready until February 13th--well past the promised timeframe. 2. Failure to provide service I requested & paid for: the individual who took my order put in different instructions than what I asked for, so the job wasn't done when I arrived despite my clear request and despite paying in advance. When I dropped off the shoes, I asked for a receipt (since you pay in advance), but they said they couldn't provide one. The job I asked for was simple: leather peeling up on the toe box needed to be glued down and for them to touch up the chipping paint on the toes of the shoes. They insisted that in order to to paint/redye the toes of the shoes they would need to make some fixes the soles as well, which were a little worn down but nothing major, otherwise it would just chip again - resulting in me being charged a higher cost for the additional service. However, when I picked up the shoes, they didn't even complete the dyeing, so I just feel like they were trying to upsell me and then didn't even do what I asked for. When I picked up the shoes and saw the dyeing hadn't been done, I asked about it and they said I never ordered it. I was then told the only solution was pay additional money for the dye service which would take another week and a half. This is despite being charged over $90!!!! 3. Lack of Communication: They rarely answer their phone, occasionally for days at a time, making it nearly impossible to get in touch. With leather and shoe repair, communication and attention to detail are everything. Both of these necessary qualities were lacking from the experience at Cobbler's Bench - I feel like I was robbed blind and did NOT get what I asked for. These issues have guaranteed I won't be a return customer. read more

I dropped off a pair of Larry Mahan cowboy boots that had poorly done half soles and had severely slanted "riding heels" (good for stirrups, not great for walking). Pete replaced the soles with high quality German soles and put standard cowboy boot heels on them for a very reasonable price. The boots look fantastic and the craftsmanship is superb. Pete even added some flourishes like embossing the perimeter of the bottom of the soles, and using copper nails to keep the waist of the soles tight. Bottom line for those of you who aren't cowboy boot owners - I dropped off a pair of bizarre looking boots, and picked up a pair that I am happy to have. I have been procrastinating on get my rain boots fixed and when the threat of bad weather was approaching I immediately took advantage of finding a shoe repair store in my area. The threading was coming loose on the left shoe and since it was such a good shoe that I had for over a year, why not get it fixed instead of purchasing brand new shoes. They did good work on my new shoes. I bought 2 pairs of new men's dress shoes and I had them add rubber slip guards & heel taps. I also asked them to polish them. They got it done in the timeframe they quoted. They were polite and professional. This is my first pair of fancy, high quality dress shoes so I can't comment on the price of their services. TLDR: If you want to be treated with suspicion, come here. Really wanted to like this place because the location is convenient for me...but I did not appreciate the way I was treated. I brought in a pair of Loub's in for a heel cap replacement and rubber sole addition. Initially, it went well, I picked up my shoes and wore them for the first time since the replacement about a week later. I wore them from my apartment, to my carpeted car, to a paved parking lot, into a carpeted event space. When I got home, the heel caps were completely damaged and almost coming off...after ONE wear, on pretty standard/smooth ground (i.e. not cobblestones or rough terrain). I called the shop and asked if there was any sort of guarantee/warranty for their work, since I had only worn the shoes one time. I was asked to bring the shoes in. I had a couple of work trips back to back, so I ended up bringing the shoes in about a week after I spoke with the shop. The shopkeeper (not sure who it was exactly), looked at the heels and asked me how many times I wore them. I told him, very calmly and without attitude, one time, on a paved parking lot into a carpeted event space. He shook his head, as if he didn't believe me. He asked me how long the heels lasted before I initially brought them in, I said at least 8-12 months (can't exactly recall since COVID) and multiple wears. He again shakes his head and glares at me, as if he doesn't believe anything I'm saying. He also says, there's no way you only wore these one time. At this point, I'm really sensing an attitude from the shopkeeper and he tells me they do not have any sort of guarantee for their work and they usually do not fix prior work (even though it had been less than a month from pickup to return). I said well if you don't want to fix it or stand by your work then that's fine, but I don't appreciate you acting like I am lying to you or trying to pull a fast one. I then asked why I was told to bring the shoes in if you don't have any sort of guarantee. He said so they could "assess" the shoes. Again, I said well if you don't want to fix it then that's fine I'll take them back home with me. He said no, we'll fix it and grudgingly takes the shoes and says they will be ready for pick up in 1-2 weeks. I picked up the shoes and they look fine (haven't worn them yet). However, I really have a problem with how I was spoken to and how I was viewed with such suspicion, when I did not even approach the situation with an attitude. I have no reason to lie about how many times and where I wore my shoes. I don't understand why I was treated like a liar, but I do appreciate that they took the shoes back and fixed the heels. Nevertheless, I cannot get that bad impression out of my mind and I won't be returning or recommending this business to anyone. read more

I was told 2 weeks MAYBE a little longer to have my items ready and it took 2 MONTHS. The owner is exceptionally rude and overstates the quality of his work. My LV bag restored was just sewn over not properly fixed. I got my LV duffel cleaned and he didn't clean the handles. It is obvious because the airport sticker is still on. Furthermore, I got shoes resoled here and they are falling off and the heal taps broke off after 2 wears.. I've tried a few different cobblers in the area and none compare to this place! They are the best. They take the time to discuss what will be done with the item/how much. Then they email you once the item is ready (normally this has been earlier than the estimated time they've given me). I've had some boots fixed and a pair of Gucci loafers resoled. Saw that this was the place in DC with the best reviews and took a pair of brand new, very very expensive boots (Carol Christian Poell) to get a protective sole and a rubber heel, ran me 89.89 total. I was told it would take about a week, and they were ready by then as promised. I have no complaints about the protective sole other than that I hoped it would be cut slightly further up to leave the shank/sizing information exposed(pictured), but that isn't a big deal. The heel seems to have been over-shaped in a way that is curved inward and quite different from the way it was originally shaped(pictured), and the layers above the rubber heel were smoothed into each other in an unsightly way. There were various scuff marks made on the right boot(pictured), and when I came to pick them up, one of the boots was pulled from underneath a pile of shoes with its shaft folded completely over. I'm assuming that the other one was only outside of the pile because I had called a little while before to ask if they were ready. The boots seem to have been given some kind of shine/polish that is greasy to the touch and has changed the original state of the leather(looks like candy at the moment, I'm going to try wiping it down a few more times). This was neither mentioned nor requested. It turned one of the lower zippers black(pictured), which I had to scrub off. I would be less bothered if these were old boots that I had already worn down and scuffed up myself, but because these were brand new, the amount of changes to the initial state of the boots has really upset me. I had seen and ignored another review that said that this was not a place to bring new shoes, but now I would agree that this is the case. The boots are still wearable, but the apparent lack of care that the boots were treated with doesn't match up with the price that I paid. In the future I will try George Shoe Repair, which was my second choice. Based on a phone conversation with them, they use Vibram products despite what their pictures online show. For old, worn shoes you'll probably be fine and your shoes will be finished within the promised time window. For new shoes, I'd recommend finding a place that has enough shelf space to store shoes horizontally instead of vertically (or spend a great deal of time explaining how much you care about them and want their shape/state retained, and ask them to write that down on the ticket). read more

Anytime I buy an expensive pair of shoes I always have protective soles put on them to preserve the life of the sole. I haven't bought any shoes like this since Covid until now. The only place to go to have this done to perfection is Cobblers Bench Shoe Repair. These booties were a bit tricky since the body of the shoe was a delicate see through mesh leather. They did an amazing job on them. Adding a protective sole adds no bulk to the bottom of your shoes/heels and prolongs the bottom of your shoes forever so when you pull them out a few years later they still look brand new. It's so nice to know that shoe craft still exists today. They were super prompt too. read more
