I had a really bad experience here. I brought in two pairs of expensive leather slip-on shoes to have them cleaned and have the sole replaced on one pair. He did a fine job cleaning/conditioning them but he really botched the sole replacement. He didn't bother to remove the old sole and just slapped a new sole on them. He added in a little extra material on the heel to even it out which looks terrible. He somehow pulled out some of the original stitching so now it's all frayed. I just took it to another place to have it redone and they were shocked that he had given them to me like this and said the sole is really crappy and cheap. It's worn out on the heel in under a month. GSR charged me $80+ for this shoddy job. I wish I could have gotten my money back but he was not nice about it at all. I rarely leave bad reviews but after having spent over $130 on simply repairing the soles of a pair of leather boots and a very unprofessional and negative experience, I recommend going to literally any other cobbler in the DMV. I first went to George a few months ago to resole a pair of black heeled vintage leather boots. He said he would add a leather sole and heel tip for $65. After about 20 wears, the sole on the pointed tip of the shoe started to wear down. I went back to George and he said whoever repaired this shoe should have used rubber not soft leather, another $65. I reminded him that HE repaired the shoe, if the craftsmanship is bad its his own. He said fine this time he will do a good job and add a rubber sole but its $65. When I went to pick up the shoes he had resoled only 1 inch of material at the tip of the shoe (not a $65 job) without rubber and AGAIN used soft leather. I told him that he was supposed to use rubber and I reminded him that he EXPLICITLY said he would do this and I would not accept the shoes without the rubber sole. He started yelling and deflecting, saying "that's your problem," and "Americans would say this is a great job, but YOU have a problem." (I'm visibly not White). I have never been spoken to in such a rude, unprofessional, and frankly, prejudiced tone. Not only was his craftsmanship subpar, he forgets what he tells his clients and blames them when he doesn't deliver. Steer clear of this place! read more

George's shoe repair charged me $180 to replace the zippers on a pair of leather boots. I thought that was pretty pricy even for DC, and upfront payment was required. The stitching job also turned out messy (I uploaded photos), and they acknowledged that it didn't look nice. When I asked for some kind of discount they refused and said their machinery couldn't do the job any neater, which was disappointing - it really affects how the boots look. I do give them credit for replacing the zippers and adjusting the boot width well. They also cleaned my boots which was nice. However, I was really disappointed in the aesthetic of the stitching, especially for the price. read more

I'm a little biased since this is the only time I've had my shoes repaired but it far exceeded expectations! Dropped my Frye booties off on a Thursday evening to be re-soled and decided to add a $10 shoe shine, as well. The gentleman working we super friendly, which is sometimes hard to find around DC. Picked my shoes up the following Wednesday and I swear they look better than when I first purchased them! I even damaged the wood on the heel and he fixed that without issue! This is my first Yelp and it is a Yelp well spent. After finally taking in some weather beaten dress shoes (snow, sleet, salt, and a restaurant job involving a lot of walking) that I received for Christmas in 2013, as soon as I entered into the repair shop the lovely woman assisting me assessed the shoes and recommended how they can save my shoes from purgatory. After taking another look and handling a quote that was fair and reasonable, she assessed that she would prefer her father to handle them as he will know how to best restore them, and restore is exactly what Jorge (George) did. I've attached photos of a before an after so you can see for yourself the quality. Truly a warm friendly service for something so minimal but at the same time means I have another year with these shoes. This is the second storefront to the now-defunct George's on 13th & U. I took my well-worn boots to George's when a zipper on my right shoe completely gave out (when I was out, in the middle of a snowstorm, no less). I was charged $40, up front, to fix my zipper. I wasn't thrilled about the price but also disinclined to purchase a new set of boots so I obliged the price. the zipper they fixed re-broke (!) but I took them back to George and they fixed them - for good - and without charge. Prices are certainly higher than average, but I appreciate that they did a job that they stand behind. (This after paying for each repair with about a month and half in between repairs). These guys are terrible. First I took my fiancee's shoes (yeah, leave me alone (honestly, they're not mine!)) in to get the heels put back on. They charged a lot and didn't bother to shine them. Then I took my shoes in to get re-soled. They charged a boatload and did a terrible job. There is glue showing all over the outside of the shoes, and one of the new soles is already coming off, on the 3rd wearing. My office looks down on their store. I brought in a pair of 11 year old go-to leather heels where the fore sole finally gave up the ghost and self destructed... at work, of course. They also needed new heels. I called several other places, and they all wanted well over $50 for the repair. I couldn't justify spending that kind of money on 11 year old shoes that I only paid $60 for, no matter how comfy and well broken in they are. I was charged $35 and got more than I bargained for. I got a new half sole and heel with genuine Vibram replacements and he thoroughly cleaned and reconditioned the entire upper. They looked almost new again. Jorge -- George, who who owns this perfect shoe repair shop, is wonderful. He can be a bit of a flirt with women -- not offensively, muy simpatico. Pero muy importante, my shoes and boots have always been repaired, re-soled perfectly with an extra bit of water-proofing and shine. When I've brought in repairs that could be handled more easily, like a sandal where the sole was beginning to come off, rather than take it and fix it for $10 (or whatever it would cost), he offered an inexpensive glue. I chose the glue, of course, and easily fixed my sandal hard and strong -- and the glue will last for many other home shoe repairs. Bravo, Jorge! read more

I wish I had found George sooner! I've taken several pairs of boots in for repairs over the last couple years, and he has done an outstanding job every single time. Every other shoe repair I'd previously tried in DC pales in comparison. George completely resoled my leaky 25-year-old cowboy boots for only ~$100, which I was nervous about because they have sentimental value. Now they look as good as they did back in '91. George has also given me solid advice on preventive maintenance repairs: I recently took in a pair of boots with leather soles because the heels were getting worn down, and he recommended adding a rubber sole to make them more weatherproof. They're wearing terrifically now. All of the employees are super friendly and knowledgeable, the shop is efficiently run, and the work is invariably high quality. read more

George's knows shoes. They are fairly priced, have a fast turnaround, and are reliable. I mostly go in for heel replacement (Which is often. I like heels.) but have also had them replace soles, elastics, etc. The one time I had a problem with a replaced boot heel that immediately broke again, they repaired it a second time for free. I was nervous going in because I had read mixed reviews under another name of the business. I had to come home and write a review while it was fresh. I just took my favorite shoe in that had a small rip in the seam underneath a strap. So my little sandal kept getting caught on my pinky toe! I brought it in and didn't want anyone to touch my fave sandal, but they looked at it, took it on the spot and put some shoe glue right where it needed it. Very nice gentleman that runs this store, sadly he had to close his other location that was on 14th St, but U St. location is still up and running!!! Had him replace a zipper on my left boot. And replace the heel on the right boot that got damaged from improper storage during moving.....did a good job....the heel that needed repair had some extra glue that looked a lil messy but nobody will notice except me. They had several different options for the soles and I was able to find one that matched my boots well. Years ago, this used to be a very good repair/shine shop. The work that has been done on my shoes over the past couple of years has just been mediocre--while the prices have gone up. The gentlemen is always extremely nice and welcoming, which is plus. But there are other cobblers in the neighborhood who are just as pleasant, if not more. This place actually ruined a pair of my shoes with a different colored dye that rubbed off in patches after I wore the shoes one time, and charged me exorbitant amount of money for putting soles on another pair. I had this stuff done in Manhattan, top notch job, for 1/4 of the price and turnaround time. Overall, I think it's overpriced for services. It's fine for basic stuff, but if you want very good service at reasonable prices, there are other options in the U street corridor. read more

Been here more times than I can remember and everything always comes out great! I've had multiple heel and/or full soles replaced on pumps and boots.
