I came on a Thursday afternoon and enjoyed this charming little restaurant. The French fries and Biscoff waffle was our favorite! We also tried the crab cake sandwich and French onion soup (also yummy). The ambiance is wonderful with French music playing and a darling patio. Deliciousness - 4/5 Happiness - 5/5 I love Belgian beer, and Cock and Bowl is my favorite place to nab some of this great nectar. This place keeps the Belgian brews stocked across the spectrum. From fruity Lambics to Tripels (my personal fave) and Quadrupels, pales to darks. There's a lot to explore here. The food is pretty good too. The frites (fries) are excellent and pair well with the beer. They are thick without veering into steak fry territory, nicely crunchy, and packed with a pleasing amount of salt (and I believe a hint of vinegar). The waffles are also a standout, typically topped with light and airy cream. The merguez lamb sausage is also hearty and delicious. I wish the building itself was larger. There's only a few tables, meaning you may be in for a wait if you go during the colder months. And I recently had the chocolate mousse and didn't care for it. It was much more akin to pudding, and there wasn't a deep enough chocolate flavor to contrast with the whipped cream. There's no better place I've found in Occoquan to eat, drink, and be merry. I highly recommend you stop here when you visit. read more

Our party of four went to Cock and Bowl for dinner on a Saturday night - it had been a long time since we visited and I was excited to go back. The menu caters to Belgian dishes and beer (an amazing Belgian beer list!) I had a hard time choosing which mussels to order, so I went with the classic Mariniere, and it did not disappoint - they were perfectly done, tender and flavorful! Our table also ordered the Steak Poivre, beer braised sausage and Belgian frites - all of it delicious. And we finished the meal with Belgian waffles and creme brulee - absolutely perfect. The restaurant is small, but the outside seating area can accommodate quite a few people. The service was wonderful - friendly and not rushed, and the owner stopped by to chat - such a likeable person! The ambiance, the menu, and the welcoming staff make this a truly unique restaurant - it is a hidden gem in the town of Occoquan, and we are looking forward to going back. read more

Stopped by after a hike looking forward to Belgian food! It was a cold day but the inside seating here leaves something to be desired so we took a chance on the outdoor patio with space heaters, very cute neighborhood. We started with the foie gras which unfortunately, was the greyest I've ever seen in my life; evidently had been sitting out for hours, extremely unappetizing looking but tasted ok. I enjoyed the seasoning on the bread crisps. I got the croquet madame which was pretty heavy once the bechamel coagulated. My brother had the mussels and couldn't finish them because they tasted odd and barely had any broth. Dad has the bratwurst sandwich which was ok. Service was scarce for a quiet Sunday. This is my second time here and the first dining during the day. The outdoor scene is great. Plenty of shade (first time we went it rained and we didn't get wet under the huge umbrellas). The Belgian waffles are to AWESOME but this trip I abstained. They have a pretty extensive Belgian-German beer selection but all bottled so no trials. I ordered the Sauicce (sp??)which is a German pork brat w grilled onions in a brioche bun. It was very good, I added spicy mustard and their mayo. Came w Belgian fries that are doubled fried. Phenomenal. I mean the weather was perfect and the server offered a good alternative to the beer I chose as they were out of it. Never had the McChoufle before and glad I trusted his recommendation. The pretzel as an app was a good mix off crisp exterior and soft interior. The grain mustard was a good complement, the spicy mustard will clear any sinus issues you may have. Seriously, I was overcoming laryngitis due to allergies and one sip of the spicy mustard improved my voice. Gotta check this spot out. Next time I'm getting the waffle. They are so good. read more

There is a huge selection of great beer, and the food is also really good. I got a sandwich and French onion soup and enjoyed both. The two beers I sampled were also excellent (and normally hard to find). I also appreciated the good service. It was crowed at first so a little hard to get attention, but as things thinned out my server was very attentive. The only negative is the upstairs dining area is very small. Don't expect more than a group of 4 people at a time to dine in. They do have an outdoor sitting area, but that's only for fair weather. Even so, this place is awesome for beer lovers. read more

We came for Riverfest but it was pouring down rain on the way there so when we arrived it was fairly light foot traffic in the little town. By the time we were seated at the restaurant outside we had the whole to ourselves which felt like our own private patio. The service was very pleasant, allowing me to sample a wine or two to pick one and he liked the beer and selection, and everyone really enjoyed their entrees. Highly recommend the shrimp croquettes and don't sleep on their wine list. The service and food was easily 5/5 and we would happily return if in the area again. read more

The pineapple apple cider was so crisp, sweet and delicious! Although the Belgian fries left something to be desired (the duck fat fries in Belgium are much thicker and taste like heaven...these were thin by comparison and didn't taste the same at all), the waffle was decent and my companion enjoyed the grits. I can't comment on the food as we only stopped for beer, but it looked like folks were really enjoying their mussel pots! The patio here was the perfect place to beat the mid-afternoon heat -- shaded and nestled between buildings it was quiet and enjoyable. They also offer a FANTASTIC selection of German and Belgian beers too! My husband had a Cuvée (Cuvée des Trolls) that was definitely one of the best beers we had in a while. They have outdoor seating and indoor, if the weather is nice, we definitely recommend the outdoor seating. Patience is always required when things are made fresh and it's a small team but it is worth the wait. It has a quaint European atmosphere inside. The food was DELICIOUS!!! Best sandwich I've had in a long time. I had the Croque Monsieur with fries. A family member recommended we eat here for lunch today and it was awesome! The setting is so perfect for a nice day and having the option to sit outside. They have an impressive selection of beers. I opted for a raspberry Lambic Frombaise and it was delicious. My husband and I split the crab cake sandwich with french fries and the Wallon salad, which we added chicken too. All of our food was so good. The crab cake was super fresh and just lightly breaded- nothing too heavy and overdone. The service was excellent! We felt very well tended too. For a Thursday, they had a lot of customers dining outside during the lunch hour. I absolutely love this place! It's such a cute little spot tucked away from the Main Street. They also have a really nice out door seating area. Inside the dining room is upstairs and is very intimate. Went in for a late lunch on a Sunday and had a great time. Great beer and wine selection- our waiter was super knowledgeable about everything and all his recommendations were amazing. We tried the charcuterie board, the pretzels, and had the Coq & Bleu and Saussure for mains. The fries here hand made are top tier. Can't recommend this place enough. You can tell that everything is made with care and preciseness. The beer selection is also top-notch, especially if you're a fan of European brews. My husband and I stopped by here in the later part of a Saturday night. We are fans of historic Occoquan and had not been here before. It was exceptional with heated outdoor seating, French music in the background and attentive waitstaff. Laminated menus that were peeling apart, the one bathroom they have (upstairs) - trash overflowing and didn't look like it had been cleaned that day - there were only two tables with customers when we arrived. Heard the waiter tell two other tables (only other customers) that they were out of food items as well and apologized repeatedly - not his fault though. Barry and decided to try this restaurant on Saturday evening which may have been the wrong evening to try, even with reservations required, we had to wait 5 minutes for the table then another 15 minutes for our order to be taken. It's nights like this that we chose to not order an appetizer. The staff was cheerful, just not available to refill waters or just check even after most of the crowd cleared. Barry and I wondered if maybe inside was busy. I was able to flag someone to request a water refill, and received an " oh ok". My request for water brought water to everyone,so it was a good thing that I requested it- Barry said that this may be the first and last time that we come here. It's my second time here and I was craving mussels so came in again anyway. 50% of my mussels weren't open and I spit 3 of them out because they tasted weird and off and one of the 3 had a weird bubbly slimy structure. The owner is too busy to chat. I took a picture. My husband's mussels looked very different. They looked like your standard stock photo image mussels. I will update if I end up with food poisoning. They took 50% off the one portion since I did eat some. I will not be back. I really wanted to like this place despite the negative reviews and rude staff and aloof and cocky management. We were quickly seated outside on the patio area - I should note that if you're easily bothered by bugs and the like be aware they are a presence when the weather is nicer. We ordered the Brie and Prosciutto toast as an appetizer: good choice! As an entree I ordered the steak frites (medium rare - sorry no cross section), from the picture you can see the steak came out on a large bed of fries so come hungry! The garlic butter was delightful, but unfortunately my steak came with a hefty amount of fat that I didn't want to deal with so I cut it off, otherwise I think I would've pushed for that last star. We tried this place on a whim, trying to support small business. I ordered the steak and frites, as did my friend. While the service was initially good, we both ordered medium rare steak. When it came out it was so well done we could barely cut them. We sent those back and got two new steaks. This time though they were both raw in the middle. Ridiculous. The server offered us to go boxes. Both steaks were unable to be saved and were thrown out at home. When my friend mentioned the problem, the server almost laughed it off. This cute little gem of a restaurant is a little slice of Belgian heaven on the river. First, they have a very nice selection of Belgian beers, and a small, but well appointed wine list. The service is spot on, and our waitress did not lead us astray. I had the Brew Ha Ha mussels. Quite simply, they were the best mussels I've ever had. The sausage, potatoes and garlic steamed in beer. So so so good. And the waffles for dessert. Do not leave without having the waffles for dessert. Ate here for the first time tonight with my wife. We had the Brie appetizer with honey which was amazing. She ordered the muscles in white wine sauce with fries and loved it. I had the Coq & Blue and honestly would not get it again. Chicken wasn't juicy, bacon was over done and I couldn't really taste the blue cheese on the sandwich. Here is my review update as of June 2019. After maybe 5 times of visits, I have to change my rating to three stars. It's the quality of their mussels. As in my photo posted today, their mussels are consistently like these. They are stretched out inside the shells, which means they were dead before cooking. This is how mussels and clams look when they were not fresh/live when they are cooked. If I were the chef, I would not use the dead (usually opened ones) mussels for my customers. I bet many of the customers may not know what I am talking about but all mussels should be whole and plump in their shells when cooked. The place is still attractive and they do their waffles and fries great. I will just not order mussels any more. Although this was my first and only visit here just two days ago, I don't mind giving five stars for this charming restaurant. My overall experience with Cock & Bowl was very good - from the time I called for the call ahead thing on the day of, to arrival at the restaurant, entering from the back door thinking that was the main entrance and still welcomed with a smile by the staff inside, to be seated at the table upstairs, ordering, eating salad, fries, mussels, bread, waffles, ... The PEI mussels were very good but the fries and waffles were excellent. Everything was satisfactory. 4 of us all enjoyed our business lunch (or lunch + waffle brunch!so much that we didn't want to go back to work! But we all did. ;) read more
