I visited here as it was one of the few places near Yankee Stadium that was clean and quiet. The cashier and workers that attended to me were friendly. And promising authentic Jamaican eats and large portions, it was an easy choice over the Hard Rock Cafe. The small space feels even smaller due to the heavy-duty glass structure fencing customers off from the kitchen. Contemporary music and chatter between patrons echo loudly around the room. The yellow walls are decked sparingly with the required NYC restaurant code posters, broken ordering touchscreens, and a muted flat-screen TV playing CNN. Two mismatched tables are squeezed into the tiny area. Mains and side dishes sit in trays along the display counter, but with such quick turnover, new batches routinely replace old ones. My girlfriend and I arrived just before 5PM, and not a moment too soon -- a line quickly began forming just after we ordered. We opted for Jerk Chicken and Oxtail Stew Combo Plates, with sides of Butter Beans and Tomatoes, Sweet Candied Yams, Mac & Cheese, Collard Greens, and Ripe Plantain. Both platters were enormous: our large takeaway containers were loaded nearly to the brim. The chicken was slightly dry and therefore was well-complemented by its thick, sweet-and-spicy jerk sauce. The sauce was so good that we couldn't help but dip our plantains and mac & cheese into it. The tender oxtails, coated in a light gravy, melting in your mouth with fatty decadence. Especially busy before or after Yankees games. It doesn't have much room inside so you're likely taking it to go. The food isn't the best price. It helps that they give you a lot. The last time here it took awhile to make a few items that were a part of our meals. It's forgivable especially if there's a game. They have food in a combo where you choose items and sides. A good food option for those frequenting Yankees games a few blocks away! I swung by Flavas on a Friday evening prior to heading to a Yankees game and was I glad I did. I dropped in at around 5:30pm and there was already a line out the door. The employees were chill and taking their time, as it was their every right, so it took about 15-20 minutes to finally make it to the counter to order. The restaurant was pretty much a no-frills type of spot. You order, you pay, you're out the door. Simple as that. The menu and prices were listed right behind the counter. If you're familiar with Jamaican food, then they had your run of the mill chicken, meat and seafood combo plates, which came with 2 or 3 sides, depending on if you ordered a small or large plate. The small plate ran $9.95, while the larges ran $13.95. I ordered a small and that was more than enough food, so beware of spending the extra $4 for a large. I ended up with the stew chicken with candied yams and rice, while my wife had the stewed oxtail with mac & cheese and plantains. The meats were really good. The stew chicken and oxtail were delicious and flavorful. No complaints there. The sides were a bit on the weak side though. Although we understand that the islands like their mac and cheese dry, we weren't a huge fan of it. The plantains were also lacking too, in terms of flavor and texture. They were supposed to be sweet, but were too hard. Nothing about Flavas' food convinced us that it was spectacular, but it was solid. Walked into Flavas after having about 30 minutes between work and a meeting. I had read the reviews about how Flavas always has a line and this was true of my visit as well. I worried that I would run out of time, but the line moved fairly quick. The first thing I noticed were the rows of fresh home-cooked food. A lady would emerge from the back and refill them regularly. The gentleman who helped me was a bit sour and unfriendly, but the lady who charged me was very kind. Due to my time constraints, I ordered a chicken patty and a Jamaican Kola. The patty was extremely flavorful and could have been the best had the edges not been so dry. In the past I've ordered the fried shrimp, fried whiting, macaroni and cheese - all of which were okay but nothing to really write home about. So, if you're seeking that smoky, charbroiled flavor that you'll often find in a Brooklyn Caribbean restaurant you won't find it here. I absolutely LOVE the smoky flavor of grilled chicken, so I totally get if that sounds disappointing. But with that said, I still really like their chicken - and I get it every single time I visit! Now the Rasta pasta: Flavorful and not dry. At times they make it with an extra hint of spice - which I luv. But, if you want to try it (and I think you should), don't try to order it before 12:30/1pm - although the restaurant opens at 11am, it's usually not available until then.
