Let's just put it this way: when I got home, my girlfriend was like, "That's not your normal, cool haircut; you look like a young boy or a really boring businessman or engineer." The prices here are FAR out of proportion with the caliber of expertise/experience. E.g. my "Advanced" stylist only had like 1 year of experience! The salon itself is beautiful, and the staff were all super friendly and nice. Unfortunately, the price charged for an "Advanced" stylist led me to expect a much more elevated quality of cut and style. Instead, I got a haircut that I'm not happy with, and which looks a lot like the haircut I once got at Supercuts (never again!). My stylist was noticeably baffled by the minor cowlick toward the back of my head, and she cut my hair after straightening and puffing it up with a hair dryer, which is just really not a technique that I've seen used by any of the *Advanced* stylists that I've ever worked with (they typically cut my hair normal, wet, or with product in it). I do not recommend coming here. Instead, I'd check out Hector Estrada Salon or Cetana Salon. read more

Naturally, I have almost jet black, coarse and curly Indian hair. In early 2016, I had decided to get highlights from a salon I didn't know too well which ended HORRIBLY with my hair fried from bad bleaching. I had to cut my long hair and decided to also use a box dye to cover up the bad job. A couple months later, I came into see Courtney Day at Code Salon. Courtney examined my hair as a detective, looking at each section very carefully. She was the first colorist I've met that explained the science behind chemically changing hair, how hair cuticles help determine texture and a full overview of the different curls I had. She also pointed out that I didn't have thick hair as most colorists told me, but medium hair (I just happened to have A LOT of hair lol) It was amazing! She gave me options for what I could do with my hair while retaining it's strength and gave me a nice brown base with golden balayage (like a Twix bar). Courtney is like a magical painter when doing hair - painting highlights carefully yet methodically. I received so many compliments on my hair! Now, two years later, the only person I trust to touch my hair is Courtney Day. I let her roam free with her art, allowing her to create a highly custom color that goes with my style and lifestyle. Currently I am more on the blonder side with a Balayage + Highlight + Base combo. Besides having the honor to rock a Courtney Day masterpiece on my head, Having such a talented colorist work and fix my hair has been life changing. Wow! I was blown away by the service at Code Salon. Today is their last day before they have to shut down again and I can say that this was without a doubt the best hair salon experience I've ever had. I have never colored my hair before so I was excited but nervous too. I had some ideas in mind for what I wanted but hadn't completely fleshed it out. Angelica was my stylist and she is absolutely amazing at what she does. She walked me through the whole process, listened to what I had in mind while adding her own special touch and suggestions. The result was a beautiful burgundy partial balayage to complement my natural black. She was super cool and fun to talk to the whole time and clearly knows exactly what she is doing. Code Salon is a gorgeous salon filled with luxurious and thoughtful touches. I came to get a blowout with a deep conditioning treatment with Annalizay last weekend, and she totally exceeded my expectations!! Not only was she polite and just super fun to be around, she really made an effort to understand what I was looking for and completely delivered. I felt that the deep conditioning treatment was tailored towards what my hair needed and I could see that Annalizay absolutely could assess what that was from the get go. In no way did I feel rushed or pushed to buy any products, but she made some really awesome recommendations and I can't wait to come back for a cut or color with Annalizay in the future! Parking was also a huge bonus (note: I came on a weekend). The salon is actually on Clara Street (despite the address saying it's on 4th). Follow your nose.. the scents are amazing in this salon! I've been to Code Salon twice and Jacelyn is a godsend! I recently moved to San Francisco and I had to find a new hairstylist. My hairtype is curly 3b, and jacelyn saved me from the dreaded "triangle head". She gave me a quick trim and gave me more layers to round out the shape of my hair. Now it's equally voluminous ! All I do is wash my hair, use my curl products, scrunch my hair and I'm out the door! I have been Code Salon customer for a while, last Friday, I decided to go for hair color to try the first time. When I get there color stylish after looking everything suggested to go for temporary hair color which will stay good for 4 weeks. Which did cost me $85 + 20% tip. From Friday till Tuesday only 5 days I noticed from my side hair are showing gray hair very visible. I called today to code Salon and try to explain, but they said it's normal and I said 5 days? Really When you said 4 weeks I understand after 2 weeks will start fading the color, but for 5 days I will not pay $100 for hair color. Especially I was not expecting from Code Salon. At the end they said if you want we can set the another appointment for permanent hair color which can stay for 10 weeks? But you have to pay again around $100. I live in NYC and have a hard time finding anyone who can cut my THICK, wavy, dry hair well. While out here visiting I chose CODE salon for my first hair cut in a year and a half based on the Yelp reviews. Louise gave me the best hair cut I've had in years, she listened to what I wanted and added her own suggestions, sharing pictures to help decide on the perfect cut. Something that really stood out to me was when I said I wanted to keep as much length as possible, Louise kept even more of it than I had hoped! Usually when I ask to keep my length, stylists will cut it to shoulder length. But she kept all of it! Louise herself was a pleasure to talk to and gave me some great suggestions for things to do while I'm in the Bay Area. She also was able to work her magic (wash, cut, style, and dry) in just an hour. And even though I was her last appointment of the day, it didn't feel like she was rushing at all. Best of all, she walked me through everything she was doing to my hair so that I can recreate the style myself at home. The price was exactly as expected based on their services page on their website. They didn't add any unexpected costs based on the length/density of my hair or the moisturizing treatment she gave me, like salons in NY would. Also they followed covid precautions and I felt very safe the whole time. It's rare that I walk out of a salon feeling better about myself than when I went in, but Louise made me feel like a million bucks! She created a loyal customer out of me, and I'll be returning whenever I'm in the area. read more

Walking up the stairs to this salon was not what I expected. It's a very nice open space with all that is needed in a salon. I was attended to right away by the front desk then before I can have a seat KJ swooped me up to have a seat in her salon chair for my services. I came in for lash and brow tinting plus brow and upper lip wax. She started out with the tinting then the waxing. I loved the process, which didn't take very long at all. I didn't have any issues with the tinting and waxing; no allergic reactions. The wax was very smooth and light. KJ was very gentle and swift with the waxing and gentle with the tinting. She let me know before she attempted each service and clean up. KJ is awesome! Very professional with their services, clean and awesome customer service. Today was my first visit to Code Salon, and I had the pleasure of seeing Annalizay as my stylist. She was so friendly, confident, professional, and asked great questions about what I wanted. It was a big priority for her to know exactly what I imagined, and made to sure to check in with me during the process (I went from a shoulder length cut to a pixie cut, and I have curly, frizzy hair...not easy!) She offered a delightful head and neck massage, and had me out of the chair in a timely manner without things feeling rushed. The salon is beautiful, relaxing, and there seems to be a lot of great teamwork and camaraderie which always contribute to a positive experience. After living in SF for 6 years, I finally found my go-to salon. The staff here is incredibly talented - and every part of the experience is held to the highest standard. ANGELICA! I cannot say enough about her. She is incredible with color and styling. I always feel my best when I leave her chair and continuously receive compliments on my color. On top of that, she's so lovely and makes spending a couple of hours in the salon an extremely enjoyable experience. Do not hesitate to book a service with Angelica. I've also had a few cuts here with many different stylists. The junior stylists have given me some of the best cuts I've ever had. The space is modern, comfortable, warm and welcoming. It's been about 9 month after my last visit (which I wrote about in my previous review) and I must conclude... this haircut probably ranks in the bottom two haircuts I've ever had. I've since visited another stylist twice to try to fix the thin ends and unreasonable layers, but besides cutting a ton of length off, there wasn't a way to completely fix it. My hair still has weirdly thinned out ends that look wispy. There are no transitions between the layers, there's one bottom layer that is the longest, then another layer that is 6 (!!!) inches shorter. Nothing in between. As you can imagine, it doesn't make for a very natural look. I usually had to wear my hair in a pony tail or bun, or curl my hair to hide the awkward layers. Originally I tried to refrain from being too negative in my review, because I was afraid I was simply reacting to the change, but it's been long enough for me to safely conclude that I kinda just... hate this haircut. It makes my very straight, full, and shiny hair look thin and unhealthy. This haircut has even made me afraid of going back to Code Salon because I can't imagine shelling out $150+ for a senior stylist again. And a senior stylist would be the only person I trusted at Code to touch my hair. read more

If you need beautiful, customized color I recommend seeing Angelica! She is the sweetest and most genuine person while also being professional and knowledgeable. It won't take long for you to warm up to her. I went in a couple weeks ago to refresh and change up my color that had faded. Her bleaching process is precise and she mixed up a few bright pink color options for me and I ended up with a perfect result. The salon is above the optometrist office and Aveda. It's very clean and spacious inside. I saw Cynthia since I had heard she can cut Asian hair. Courtney so phenomenal with color, she is always up for any challenge I throw at her and has great ideas for what I can do to keep my hair really fresh looking but still low maintenance. She gets my tone, shading and highlight/balayage placement perfect! And Denise is the only human allowed near me with a scissors. She does such a lovely job with the haircut and understands my preferences for "choppy, not straight, but also not frizzy" cuts that let my waves hang down really nicely. A quick anecdote before my review; I remember after a haircut at CODE last year (seems like eons ago), I joked with the staff about how rigorous their sanitation procedures were. My stylist shared that if there was even a stray hair at their station and an inspector came by, they could lose their license. My appreciation and respect has been on high for them ever since. Fast-forward to my first post-COVID visit last week, and CODE has somehow leveled up their already impeccable standard of compliance and cleanliness. This was the most high-end and thoughtful implementation of COVID protocols I have experienced; but none of them disrupted what I've come to know as the CODE code; an uplifting, inspiring, non-judgmental environment with world-class talent in a beautiful space. Glass partitions, individually enveloped masks, customized signs that guide everything from how to shop touchlessly to which shampoo-bed is sanitized and ready for use. It was like TSA-levels of "stand there, put your bag here" but with the grace, warmth, and professionalism of my favorite 5-star resort staff! I left with a hair cut and color that I would not have trusted anybody else with--a testament to the creativity and relevance of the CODE artistry and skill, and also a joie de vivre that is so necessary in these times. Code has some of the best stylists and colorists I have ever worked with. When I find a hair stylist I like, I am fiercely loyal. Enter Celina Gonzalez. Not only is she knowledgeable, she is professional and so incredibly warm and welcoming. Comfort is a big factor for me, and I felt that immediately when I sat in her chair. She really listens and checks in - definitely qualities I look for in a good stylist! Committing to coloring my hair, other than covering the visible grays has not happened in years. But, it was time for some dimension so I booked an appointment with Sam for base + balayage. She is so fun and knowledgeable - I felt very comfortable with her! I wanted very subtle color and she delivered. I have received so many compliments since my cut and color appointments. It was my first time going to Code salon and I've officially found my new spot! I decided to give it a shot after seeing some other recent reviews. I have thick wavy frizzy hair and usually find getting a haircut to be a chore but that was before I met Danny! Danny took the time to understand my hair, what I was looking for and talk through his recommendations. I walked out looking and feeling fabulous! Also a cool feature is the hair washing station which has these inclined bed things that are super comfy compared to normal salon chairs that strain your neck. An A+ experience overall! read more

Totally incompetent. I went in for a simple straight blowout and the lady (Sam), spent 1 hour to only come up with a cheap looking, self home styled wavy hair. To fix it, she styled it for another 15 min with flat iron and my hair ended up looking like I was back from the 90's. Who uses a flat iron for a blowout appointment? Long story short, they also charge you more than the initial price you get when you set the appointment. I ended up paying $70 for a horrendous service. And all I wanted is a simple blowout, fully straight. You would think that should be the basics for a hair stylist. Went there just because of the reviews, but now I am really confused how they collect these good reviews on Yelp. read more

I've been going to Code for the past few years now and it's been the best experience ever! I have been a loyal customer over multiple different services and they are the best! The sanitation level pre-covid was already above and beyond and now post-covid, it's exceptional and one of the first places I was able to step into without anxiety. I have been seeing Cynthia for the past 7 months and she consistently does an amazing job. As a guy with difficult, curly hair, I have struggled my whole life to find a stylist that I can call my go-to and who makes me feel excited to show off my haircut rather than hide it under a beanie. Cynthia hands down is the best I've seen because she repeatedly does an excellent job with curly hair, which is very difficult. Cynthia has curly hair herself which gives her insight into how to cut my hair. She has a pleasant personality, is very focused on getting the haircut right, and throws in a hot towel treatment which makes the whole experience just awesome. Updating my review, as I now go to CODE for all my brow needs! TL;DR -- do your brows a favour and pay a visit to Kelly H! While I no longer go to CODE for haircuts (still sad Celena moved to Minneapolis), I return every 3-4 weeks to have Kelly Higgins work her magic on my brows! I'm fiercely loyal once I find a good aesthetician, which is why despite having lived in SF since 2012, prior to meeting Kelly, my go-to brow person was still based in LA. I'd tried a few different places in the city for waxing or threading (Lucid Beauty, some other place in FiDi, etc), but they all just clean it up without doing anything special/noteworthy. TBH I didn't have super high expectations when I first went to CODE for brows, but Kelly blew me away! First of all she's the sweetest person EVER. Secondly, I didn't have to give her much guidance at all, and I was very pleasantly surprised that my brows were definitely "on fleek" (I think that's what people say nowadays? Or has that passed?). She's so knowledgeable about waxing/skincare, and always takes extra care to be sure I haven't changed up my routine in a way that would cause lifting (my actual nightmare). Had my first hair appointment at CODE. I have very thick and curly hair, a Jew fro you could say, so a new stylist is always scary. After reading several positive reviews of both the salon & Danny's capability to successfully cut/style curly hair I decided I had been putting a trim off long enough and I'm so glad I did, Danny was awesome. He took his time during the initial consultation, playing with and looking at my hair and asking me questions to get a good understanding of what I was looking for. Apparently it's standard protocol to give a little neck massage which I didn't argue with! Danny took time cutting my hair, making sure to add some framing around my face without too much layering. He also recommended a great product to tame my curls while allowing them to look 'light'. I am very pleased and couldn't be happier. Thanks Danny! The salon was also very clean and had a ton of natural light with a full height glass facade making it very welcoming.
