I wish I read the negative reviews before we came here. After first appointment, was handed an extremely expensive treatment plan, they refused to work within my means. We scheduled a deep cleaning which they kept pushing for us to get. Without consulting us, they put another $100 laser service on the bill, which I didn't notice till after. When I asked to be refunded they said they already sent it to accounting and will send me a check in 2 weeks. It's dental offices like this that give the profession a bad name. Money driven, and pray on the insecure, suggesting procedures you don't need, so they can make more money. Avoid this place, and take head to the negative reviews. read more

I've hesitated to give a bad review. But, if I don't warn other people, problem dentists will continue to be able to get away with things. I've run into crooked dentists in the USA, and while living outside of the USA. I trusted Dr. Roach, and found him to warrant that trustworthiness for the five years that I saw him, while living in Austin. My dental insurance has changed, I've since moved around, etc. The last time I went to Dr. Roach was in 2016, to get another opinion on a tooth that my downtown Austin dentist said needed half-crown, the prior week. Actually, Dr. Roach was my fourth's dentist's opinion on the same tooth over a 6-month period, while I was traveling - 1. "cavity", 2. "non-urgent cavity", 3. "half-crown" in Downtown Austin, 4. Dr. Roach visit in NW Austin. I brought my dental x-rays with me, etc. Before looking at the x-rays, Dr. Roach said there was another tooth in my mouth that needed a filling. As I was protesting, I found him shooting me up with novocaine, and going to work on the tooth. Cha-Ching! Then, he asked me why I still had my wisdom teeth, recommending that he pull them. Cha-Ching! Then, he looked at the tooth I came in for. Instead of a half-crown, Dr. Roach said it needed a whole crown. Cha-Ching! When I questioned him, he said it was because the tooth had a filling with decay around it. He also said that the tooth next to it had a cavity. Cha-Ching! He was so aggressive with me, along with his reception staff. I made up an excuse, that I needed to come back another day, etc., for the additional dental work. They called to follow up, pushing me to come in, etc. I made up an excuse, finally, when the receptionist didn't seem to want to take my polite no for an answer. The crown was going to be about $1,400! Plus the filing! I went back to the first dentist in downtown Austin for the half-crown, instead. Way less with my insurance too, around $200. But, first, I asked him if I needed a whole crown, and additional filling, passing on what Dr. Roach recommended. Fortunately, this downtown Austin dentist was honest. He told me, "I don't see any filling on that tooth (nor add'l decay), and I don't see a cavity in the tooth next to it." He repeated this twice to reassure me. Fortunately, he was honest. (Although, pretty rough on my mouth. But, I'll take rough over dishonesty.) It was so odd to me that Dr. Roach really became aggressive with me this last visit, saying I needed additional work on my teeth. Cha-Ching! I've run into this with other dentists as well. Even to the point of telling me I had 5 or 6 cavities without even looking at my x-rays and just tapping on my teeth with the back of their dental pick (in another country). Turned out I only had one small cavity per another dentist I saw the following week. My dental solution now has been to change my diet according to a researcher dentist, Dr. Weston A. Price, to try to avoid cavities in the future. Especially, since I'm only in Austin part-time to make it to the honest, downtown Austin dentist. I gave him a decent review, because I really appreciated his honesty. Although, I also hesitate to recommend him here, because he was so rough on my mouth, which I also mentioned in the review in a nice way. He's still fairly young. Although, he may not stay as honest - oy vey! I think they should do a 60-Minutes on rip-off dentists. I've been to 9 dentists in the last 6 years. And, all but the downtown Austin dentist has tried to rip me off, or sell me something I haven't needed. Scary! read more

I've been seeing Dr. Roach for over 10 years. I went to him on a referral from a coworker. Dr. Roach is a superb dentist with a great demeanor. He is super positive and friendly and his attitude is permeates through his whole staff. They really go the extra mile to treat you like family here. Every time I go for a six month cleaning everyone greets me and remembers my name. They somehow remember personal details from the previous visit 6 months earlier! I think they keep notes. I have had routine cleanings, a filling, and even "Invisiline" braces here. No matter what the case they always behave professionally and compassionately. The sign on the door says the "painless" dentist. I can't claim I haven't suffered any pain during the procedures they have performed but I can say that I have never suffered injury in the form of bad service. Any physical pain I have suffered has not been memorable. The waits in the waiting room are always short and the checkout process is smooth as silk. They take your insurance info once on your first visit and whenever you change carriers. After that they just send you on your way after each visit and mail you a bill if necessary for anything that your insurance doesn't cover. In my case the bills are always small. I have never met a less than pleasant person working in Dr. Roach's office nor have I had an unpleasant experience there and that is pretty darn amazing considering I have been going here over 10 years. read more

Disclaimer: This was in July 2013 so things could have changed since then. "We accept all insurance but we are not preferred providers with any (considered out of network). With most insurances we are pretty close to the %'s that they allow (except Delta Dental). The best thing to do is call the insurance company and ask what the dollar amount they pay for a cleaning (ADA Code 1110...our charge is $103), initial examination (ADA code 150...$105) is. I was a patient of Jollyville Dental Professionals for a few years, and I would probably still be a patient except for the fact I joined a dental insurance plan, and this dentist does not participate in any dental insurance plan networks. Even though I was a satisfied customer, I could not justify paying them over $200 per visit every six months compared to having the same service covered at another dentist for just $24 per year through a dental insurance plan. My visits to Jollyville Dental Professionals were much like my experiences at any other dental office. I arrive on time and wait a few minutes for the hygienist to call me back. The hygienist works on my teeth a half hour, and then the dentist comes in for just a couple minutes to confirm my teeth look healthy. They finish and send me to the front to pay my bill. They are located in an old repurposed home, which provides a nice office environment. I thought they worked on me efficiently but not rushed. I never saw the office overcrowded with patients. They always treated me with kindness and respect. They routinely offered me teeth whitening procedures that I did not want, but I figured they just wanted me to look perfect. I felt their prices were high, but I otherwise had no complaints. If I did not have dental insurance, I would be comfortable choosing Jollyville Dental Professionals. read more

My husband and I have been patience of Dr. Roach for many years. It is RARE to find a dentist with as much care and diligence anywhere. Even when an injection is needed, you can barely feel it. Dr. Roach is always polite and happy. He really seems to love his job. Since we are always so busy, we have to schedule appointments very early. Dr. Roach will see you as early as 7 AM which is great for us. We got our Sonicare from him and love it. If you ever need a GREAT dentist, he is the one. read more

At our first cleaning appointment, my wife and I got oral cancer screenings. The hygienists didn't discuss it with us at all beforehand... turns out that's an extra fee. Then Dr. Roach gave me three air abrasion fillings for small cavities. They were likely unnecessary as I've rarely needed fillings; other dentists have noticed small cavities before and opted to just keep an eye on them. These are small frustrations in the grand scheme of things though. My wife had a temporary crown put in. They took a cast and sent off for a permanent crown, which took three weeks to deliver since they refused rush delivery. She called the next day and said it felt painful and a bit unsettled; their staff said to just wait a few days and see if the pain subsides. It didn't. They continued to drag their feet, and a week later she insisted on a followup appointment. After she came in, "Oh, it's unseated, you should have called our emergency number!" No shit. My wife was literally in tears while they reseated the temporary crown. Two weeks later, she had to come in a third time for the permanent crown. The whole process took three appointments over three weeks, with many painful days and nights in between. Not a great experience. read more

I have been going to Jollyville Dental for the past few years. My insurance covers the semi annual cleaning, so that is one of the big reasons why I have been going back. It is also very convenient for me. Lastly, everyone there is super nice and friendly... All except for this last time (this past Wednesday) that I went in for my semi annual cleaning, I asked about getting retainers made. I don't remember the lady's name, but she was not the person who did my cleaning. She was asked to make the imprint for my retainers. She was not friendly and didn't seem to enjoy her job. As a matter of fact, she pretty much shoved the metal tray into my mouth. Apparently, the metal tray stretched the corners of my mouth that it now hurts to open my mouth wide to floss and brush my teeth now. I have puss coming out from one outside corner of my mouth. Both outer edges are cracked. It's basically a sign that there was some "tear" and that my mouth is trying to heal now. I'm writing this review because the corners of my mouth had been hurting and I just realized why now after brushing my teeth. Previously, I would have given them 5 stars, but this trip really left me with a bad impression. If my insurance didn't cover the cleaning, I would not be going back. Well, at least I don't have to get retainers made again any time soon! read more

I have to admit, I generally avoid the dentist because of the pain, but when they had a deal online I decided it was too good to turn down. I figured I'd just get my cleaning and X-rays and whitening and be on my way. However, the staff was friendly and professional, telling me everything they planned to do ahead of time. They made sure I felt comfortable throughout the visit, asking if I was OK. There are also very modern techniques used to ensure it is quick and painless. This morning I went in for my second visit to get a filling. I figured, sure they can make cleanings feel OK, but fillings? The procedure only took about 30 minutes and, besides the numb feeling in my cheek (which I've never been fond of) everything went very smoothly. I got my whitening trays and was given detailed instructions on how to use them--even showing me what is meant by placing 'a dot' in the tray. I will definitely continue to use them. read more

Best dentist's office I have ever been to. Really nice dentist, oral surgeon, and staff. Organized, professional, and also a relaxed pleasant environment, which is important to me as I have had anxiety about dental work in the past. I've been going there for over two years, no complaints. Once on a weekend I was in pain after some work on a tooth, Advil wasn't helping, so I called the after hours number, and instead of an answering service, the dentist answered! (It was his home number). He called in something stronger for me, which helped me get through the weekend. read more

Obviously the good reviews are from friends and family or very old neighborhood patients. This dentist has outdated equipment and procedures, limited hours and over-charging. I had a new patient check up; the appointment was set 2 weeks out because the Dr. only works a couple of hours a week - semi retired. They only took a partial X-Ray and no basic cleaning but yet the bill was $275.00... Clearly the place is out of the 1970's with old equipment. The Hygienist didn't strike me as competent person either and spoke negatively about her last employer. Also a girl named Megan that does the billing could not justify why the high pricing and just kept hiding. Stay Away!!!!! There are much better options for active, healthy and value minded people in Austin. read more

Where do I begin.... This place is in it for the money. I'm sure Dr Roach is great in what he can do, but they'll just hand you an endless list of what they recommend you do, as if we all just have thousand of dollars just sitting there for that purpose alone. When I first called and asked if they take my insurance I was told they just put the paperwork in and will b starting Jan 2012. So I made my appointment for the new year. Front desk was nice enough and I was in pretty quick. The dental asst was nice, but took about 25 X-rays to get what needed. Dr Roach came by and did a pretty extensive exam and dictated a long list of needed treatments. After all was done I was led to the 'money desk'. The most unkind fake-nice lady manager printed a 5 page list of treatments with prices. Over $6K worth. She also handed me an invoice for the current visit. That stated the total, an estimated coverage, and my partial payment amount. It was $22, which I found reasonable. But then came the switcharu game - after I handed my card for payment, she explained "the thing is..." I need to pay the full amount and then get reimbursed by my dental plan. I wasn't expecting that. But somehow I just went with it. She has some strong witch powers. I decided to call my insurance and double check - they told me this practice was NOT in network (though the clinic said they were!!), and in any case, they never send checks to the patient but pay the practice. I was lied to. Straight faced. I called my bank and put a dispute in the payment and got my money back. A week later I got a thing in the mail that my bill was indeed paid 80% directly to the Clinic. I have no clue if my bank actually called them and pulled my money back, and i wonder If they will or would have called me to give me back my money!!! Cause otherwise they might b sitting there with a double payment.... So, in my opinion, no matter how good this Dr could be - with such a money machine fraudulent practice - I can do better. You can too. Walk away from this place. read more

The office staff misled me to believe that my dental insurance was accepted by them. I called and scheduled a teeth cleaning which is covered 100% by my insurance. Once I got there, they started doing x-rays and other things I never asked for. Then I got the bills... Turns out my insurance is not "fully" accepted there, but they didn't bother telling me that until I complained about the bill. They were unwilling to help me out in any way by re-coding any of the claims. In the end, I feel like I was lied to. My free yearly teeth cleaning ended up costing me $400. I Saw Dr. Roach in 2008. Initial appointment included him doing a complete workup giving me what his 'plan' was for my teeth. It included removing my fillings and replacing them with nice white ones. I didn't need the work because I had been seeing a dentist regularly (every 6 months). I did not elect to have that work done; however, while he saw me, he wanted to do a root canal and new crown (molar #30). He did the work. Yesterday, I had a second root canal on that tooth because he failed to get all of the root. The second root canal was just as painful and they had to drill a hole in my beautiful new crown! Plus, it was more expensive than a regular root canal. I'd never see Dr. Roach again and would never recommend him to anyone. If you need a root canal, ALWAYS go to a Endodontic who has the microscopic tools to handle the job. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Roach and his awesome team since I moved to Austin in '99 and I must say, they are so delightful. I don't think there's ever been an appt where I've had to wait or where they are falling behind -- a huge plus for me as I have a very busy professional life. My husband and I have been going to Jollyville Dental for a few years now and they are wonderful. I don't have any dental problems so I just go in for a cleaning twice a year. Lexi is the best dental hygienist to ever clean my teeth. She never pokes my gums and is very thorough. My husband, on the other hand, needed lots of crowns and a replacement cap. The office was very comprehensive about telling us the cost of the work beforehand which we really appreciated. While they are not "in network" for my dental plan, the office does a great job of submitting charges to insurance and letting us know what our out of pocket will be. Even out of network, the twice a year cleanings are still covered by my plan. All plans are different so always check with your insurance provider. I just really like the staff. They are always so friendly and send me appointment reminders via text and email. A friend recommended Jollyville Dental to me and I would certainly recommend them to anyone else. read more

I am a new patient to Dr. Roach at Jollyville Dental Professionals. I found out about this office via google. The location is easily accessible and easy to find on Jollyville Road with ample parking directly outside the front door (very much appreciated having just moved from Chicago). From the rocking chair on the front porch of the office building to the country house feel in the waiting room and large windows and nice views from the dentist's chair, the unique atmosphere in the office is comforting and enjoyable. The entire staff handled themselves with the highest level of professionalism and were very friendly. Percine, the dental hygienist who examined me was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Dr. Roach was no exception being friendly, personable, knowledgeable and professional. I felt that I was in very good hands and would refer anyone in need. read more

They were all very nice...BUT...they seem to be just in it for the money. They charge an arm and a leg for all of their services. I have never paid so much in my life just for a cleaning and x-rays. He wanted to refill several of my teeth b/c the color wasn't just right that would have cost over $750. I also was instructed to buy 1 of their fancy electric toothbrushes and special mouthwashes that would have cost over $100. They said I needed to come back for a 2nd cleaning but it would be before my insurance would let me so I would have to pay out of pocket...I don't think so! They call me about every week sometimes multiple times a week to try and schedule services that I don't want. I will never go to them again! read more
