After having a loved one at this facility for 2 years, I made the decision to move her to a more…read moreprivate facility to get more personalized care. I also made the move because I had zero confidence in the current administrator and his ability to keep the needs of my loved one. In the short time he has been in place, I have seen morale go down, resident families complain and complaints filed. In my opinion this person is misplaced and not qualified for this position. I voiced my concerns to the ownership group, it's up to them how to address them. In my dealings with the administrator, I found him to be rude, arrogant and condescending. He does not interact with family members, rarely interacts with resident and his follow up is horrendous. He will give you all the right buzz words and corporate talking point, but does nothing to back them up. I would not recommend, at this time, placing a loved one in this facility.

I can't say enough good things about Hearthside Manor. Nine months ago, when we could no longer…read morecare for my mom in our home, Hearthside truly became her new home. Because of its size and the small staff-to-resident ratio, Hearthside Manor provides an intimate, homelike setting with generous amounts of individual attention from the caregivers and communication based on a resident's current needs. When my mother moved in, the staff and caregivers worked together to understand what would make her comfortable in her new surroundings, physically, emotionally, and socially, and input from the family in this process was sought out and valued. When she returned to Hearthside from a recent hospital stay, everyone had to work through that process once again--but they did, and she has settled back in to a little different routine. There's no one-size-fits-all agenda at Hearthside--each person is treated with individual consideration and respect. While there is a routine in place which creates order and calm, there is also flexibility for individual needs and tastes. For example, those with dementia often don't have typical sleeping patterns, and while this can disrupt the average household, it is graciously accommodated in this setting. One of the caregivers often will simply sit on the couch with a wakeful resident after everyone else is in bed and share a cup of hot chocolate and stories until sleep comes. The confusion and emotions that surface from time to time are always met with reassurance and kindness. Family and friends are encouraged to stop in at any time and are made to feel at home with their loved one and the "family" that is made up of all the residents and staff. There's always a story to tell--what's been going on and how the family member has been doing since you were there last--and there's lots of laughter! It's so heartwarming to watch the genuinely gentle care from the staff as well as interactions that occur between the residents from time to time. I never walk out the front door without a smile on my face and a grateful heart for the people who make this a wonderful home for my mom! Hearthside is always clean, the food is good and nourishing and creatively prepared, the grounds and building are well cared for, the facility is safe and secure, the staff are happy and get along well with one another and the residents--it's a wonderful place!

My grandfather was a resident in the dementia unit downstairs for 4+ years. Sure, the building is…read morebeautiful, the staff seems caring, and the food is much better than most facilities. I have worked in various facilities, specifically with dementia/Alzheimer's residents and despite the beauty of this building inside and out, the care is horrendous. It is the same exact care that you can get at any facility. Of all of the times I visited, there were always new staff members that had NO idea how to properly care for my grandfather. I spent hours going in to the facility only to care for my own grandfather rather than spending the time to visit with him and cherish those moments. I spent my time reminding the staff of the issues with his care and what they WEREN'T doing. He spent $10,000 a month to live there and in all honestly I could have taken better care of him myself without him spending $10,000 a month. His valuables were lost within the first year of him living there. He died with nothing on the walls of his room, staring into the ceiling with no one by his side. I am very disappointed in his care at this facility and do not recommend spending that amount of money because I can assure you that the money is NOT going towards those residents. Those residents spend their days staring at a TV all day with no one-on-one interaction. The nursing staff does not recommend PT or OT to help assist these residents to live a healthier/active lifestyle. My grandfather was put into a chair and thats where he ended up the rest of his days being there. The nursing staff lies to you and tells you that they are doing the proper care needed and I caught them in the act of lying. I had to remind them to donn his boots because he ended up with a nasty heel wound that the facility NEVER healed (still there when he passed away). He was chair/bed ridden and they couldn't even remember to donn his boots which is VERY important to avoid skin breakdown. I had to clean his mouth out and wash his face. I had to massage his legs because they would turn black/blue from being immobile and the staff wouldn't do it otherwise, even when asked. I had to ask them to reposition him in bed to avoid pressure sores and skin breakdown. I even asked them to give him a bath because he had a bad odor to him. To me, this is not good care. This facility needs to re-evaluate where all of that money is going and start doing their job. It is heartbreaking to go visit a loved one that suffers from a terrible disease only to find out the people that take care of him don't actually care about him, they care about their paycheck and when their time comes to go home. The staff was never attentive when we would visit. The CEO of the company only cares about opening more facilities across the state so he can make more money. We had several complaints throughout our time there and never once was apologized to or even considered for our feelings. I understand taking care of dementia residents is not easy, I can personally say it's one of the hardest things I've done but I have never turned a cheek on my residents and always did everything I could to care for them as a human being. The staff needs to put themselves in the residents shoes and care for them as they would like to be cared for. Karma will come around for those that look the other way. I recommend you think about the significant amount of money you will put into this company/facility and the type of care that truly happens behind closed doors. Think about how your loved one feels. This place is no different than the rest.

"Don't judge a book by its cover."…read more GenCare at Point Ruston is a beautiful facility, and has a very good marketing strategy. Where they fall very, very short is in their ability to care for the residents that need progressive care. We looked at numerous assisted living properties and were convinced Gencare was the right choice. The marketing director and executive director convinced us that as our 89 year old father's needs advanced, they were fully qualified to care for him; from assisted living to memory care, all the way to end of life care. The reality is they could not care for his needs beyond independent status. There were numerous missteps and outright untruths during our dad's six months at the facility. Medication confusion, neglect, and food safety were just some of issues. We live local and often said to each other, "what is happening to the residents who don't have family here?" Gencare is a great place if your loved one is independent, active and able to advocate for themselves. If there are any care needs beyond having meals prepared, this is not the right place. The 5 star reviews are misleading. There has been a top down leadership change, and the facility went from 12 residents to approximately 134 from March 2022 to now. They opened just before COVID and were locked down with their original 12 and clearly not prepared for assisted living reality when they opened up. Our opinion is they do not have the qualified staff in place to care for the geriatric needs as their residents age. Be very sure what you are expecting if you are looking for assisted living. We would definitely not choose GenCare at Ruston again.

The facility is understaffed, and the turnover rate is about what you'd see at a fast-food restaurant. There are some pluses. It's a beautiful facility just steps from a waterfront walking/biking trail. The day-to-day staff on the floor is very friendly and caring. On the other hand, the wellness team is understaffed and not allowed to do much other than distribute medication. One wellness worker checked on my relative when she was sick and told me I had to take them to a clinic to get care. I asked where the nearest clinic was, and she didn't know. I pulled out my phone to discover that there was one about 800 feet away. How does a person in charge of elderly health care not know there's a clinic a block away from their facility? Later, I had to badger her to call a doc who hadn't returned her call. When she grudgingly (rudely) did, it turns out that her first call went to a wrong number. Just incompetent. The default medical option for anything the staff can't handle (most issues, unfortunately) is an ambulance trip to the ER.

She was a fall risk and they knew this going in as we tell everyone that. She eventually called the UP MEDICS AND they called to ask if we trusted her to stay there until we picked her up????!! The poor permanent residents! The bathrooms have NO TOILET PAPER, PAPER TOWEL OR SOAP AND THIS WAS STILL DURING COVID IN MAY 2022!! I asked them every other time I was there and they said, oh, we will get some. Then, when she left they said oh, her missing, expensive clothing is still in the laundry. To this day they refuse to reimburse us saying they "don't reimburse," and can't find the items. I called their corporate offices several times and they either transfer me or never return my calls.
