I was shopping at the banana republic factory store, and laid my sunglasses down and then when I went to pick them up again the screw from the temple fell out, and I couldn't find it at all. One of the employees told me to go to Cohen's Fashion Optical they'll fix it for you which I did . I entered the store and was greeted right away and explained my problem with my Coach sunglasses and originally they told me you'd have to leave it because the person who would fix it normally wasn't there today and come back on Wednesday to pick it up . But then the employee said wait a minute let me go in the back and see if we can do it today and lo and behold, they repaired it within five minutes. They also tightened the other temple's screw. I was able to get an appointment quickly online. The staff is not professional. They have no idea of what's going on. I have printed my coverage and they printed my coverage. My coverage includes any frame within $300 but they refused to let me pick other frames. The associate told me the frames is not price yet so she can't show me. If the frames are in display the items are priced. The optometrist assumes I need progression glasses without doing the eye exam. The things I ask for which was cover by my insurance did not get done(transition and anti coating). I told the associate as she was trying to do the paperwork. She did not put anything down and told me I can leave and told me she will handle it. I did not check my glasses until I left the store and was on the bus. Talk about bait and switch. I called and asked them multiple times if they take my insurance and they 100% ensured that they did. We even doubled checked with the receptionist when we arrived for our appointments They also ensured that my medical insurance will cover for free the extra eye tests that were above the standard 3 that are included in my insurance. Fingers crossed they aren't lying about this too. After the exam it came ime to pick out he frames, they had the plastic ones that are covered which are perfectly fine for us. But when it came time to do the prescription lens part, they said that they can NOT order the standard progressive lens and we had to buy their progressive lens which was $379, then there will be extra charges for transitions, etc. What the F? Firstly the eye exam was very good but getting new glasses is difficult and it takes a long time. They told me that my insurance wouldn't cover the frames I selected because the new lenses would be thicker than normal and so I'd have to pay an extra charge. I told them I don't want to pay out of pocket because they take my insurance. So then they said ok the glasses will be ready in a week or two and it's been almost a month and they're giving me the run around maybe another 2 weeks "we're still waiting for the lenses to be sent to us!" If you are part of the NYSNA union and trying to receive your union vision benefits here, DONT. I discussed with the male and female receptionists that I am claiming my vision benefits through my union and my benefit statement states they cover the eye exam and select frames. The male receptionist told me the GVS benefit will only cover the frames not the eye exam and that my eye exam will be covered by my health insurance. I know how my insurance and benefits work so I called my own insurance asked if I have vision benefits just to be sure and of course they stated NO, I will be billed in the end. I explained this to the male receptionist, he truly made it seem like I was dumb... He stated my benefit only covers the frames not the eye exam. How do you only partially honor a vision benefit from a union?? Perhaps it was their first time working with the NYSNA union but there is no reason to make the customer feel dumb for stating the actual facts on what their own health insurance and union benefits say. In the end I cancelled my appointment. The male receptionist seemed upset and left the store.. the female receptionist was very kind despite everything. Anyways any registered nurses using their NYSNA benefits, they are better off somewhere else where they actually understand the benefits.. if claim you are a GVS provider and are on the GVS website please educate yourselves on what to provide for GVS benefits members. read more

They offered to change my prescription to the new one and when I wasn't happy, they asked for it back in exchange for my original lenses that I had purchased elsewhere. Horrible horrible horrible! I am a MD myself and this place is not run professionally. Very upsetting experience. Day one- i call for an appointment and am asked to come right away. They said the wait is 30-40 min. So i reschedule for next day. Day 2- i arrive 15 min ahead and the front desk has me fill out all the paperwork and wait for 15 min to be told that the "doctor" as to go for lunch!!! And i got to wait for 30 min(for the pt ahead) and another 30 min for the doctor to have lunch. Seriously?? In my whole career I have not made my patient wait for my lunch. I've gone to this store for years with my family knowing that it was expensive and they always try to push higher end frames and extras on lenses. But knowing this, but living close, I still went and just usually pushed back quite a bit to get the basics. My husband went in this week by himself (first mistake) and got his exam, and ordered glasses. He asked for low end frames because he won't need these glasses all the time. The lady convinced him he had low end frames and then also convinced him to get extras on lenses. He was told his insurance was good and took 120 off frames and 100 off lenses yet still walked out of there paying over $600 for glasses. I had warned him they would try to upsell and he told them he wanted cheaper frames and they gave him "Ray Bans" and insisted these were the cheaper options (he didn't know that was designer‍). Yes, it was his fault for being gullible but if someone comes in asking for basics and they tell him these are the cheapest options this is dishonest. I've taken a family of 6 here for years and we will now find a new place. Shadiness when someone asks up front for basic frames, is underhanded. Taking advantage of someone's naïveté in the area isn't right. read more

I dropped in one day to check if they accepted my new insurance and Kelly was so helpful from the get go. I had problems logging into my insurance website to check for providers myself and Kelly was able to figure out why - the insurance company had put in my DOB incorrectly so I was unable to login. The doctor was helpful and thorough in explaining everything after not having had a check up in a couple years. In updating both contacts and glasses, Kelly went above and beyond in giving me the breakdown of prices, explaining pros & cons, helping me pick out glasses that fit well and looked good. They were prompt in ordering my new lens and glasses and notified me when they were ready for pick up the following week. I'd definitely recommend this Cohen's location! read more

I've always had my eye on Cohen's but like Jessica A. said, Cohen's can be hit or miss depending on the location, staff, etc. Luckily my first experience with Cohen's was a great one. I only went to the Bay ridge location because it was near my job (Century 21) and the also accepted my health insurance (which a surprising amount of eyeglass stores don't) and they had a $99 eyeglass deal which covered lenses, fashion frames and the exam. I've been walking around with broken glasses since July of 2011 and as soon as I walked into Cohens one of the workers said, "I'm gonna make sure you leave this store today with brand new glasses". First I must say, the selection they had for the discount frames was the best I've seen so far. It was so hard to choose a pair! Secondly, I had told them before that I did not wish to get polycarbonate lenses because I was y'know, shopping on a budget (I'm only 18 so 160 bucks on a pair of glasses is A LOT for me). When they realized that the plastic lenses were too thick for the frames they said they'd give me the polycarbonate lenses for only 30 bucks. That's half off the normal price. Like the worker said, by the time I left the store, I was wearing brand new trendy frames. All in less than 1hr. That's the quickest I've ever received glasses. But it gets better! My glasses only lasted one day because I bought the day before New Years Eve and eventually lost them at a party. I came back to this Cohen's in hopes of re-buying the same frames, unfortunately the $99 dollar deal was over though and they didn't carry the frames I originally bought. I have been coming here for years to get glasses and contacts in addition to eye appointments. I have never been disappointed with the customer service. Several occasions I have had to come here for tiny adjustments and they were happy to help. The eye doctors who take you for the appointments are always so nice. Today I went in to get new glasses and contacts and the female doctor was patient and lovely ! One time that my eye was really hurting me and it was late at night and Cohens was open and the doctor saw me and just explained that it was my contacts (silly me) They are always there to help you. The sales girl that helped me pick out my glasses genuinely wanted to find a frame that looked nice on my face. I love good customer service! I don't even know where to begin, so, I'll start off with my semi-dramatic back story. In December I was struck by a vehicle as a pedestrian. My very expensive Chanel glasses flew into the air, cracked in half by the bridge and the bottom of the left frame. For three and a half months I've been walking around with my glasses crazy glued and I had to re-glue them on three occasions. Since I'm a driver, my anxiety level was at an all-time high - thinking at any time while I'm the Belt Parkway they'd just fall apart and I'd wind up driving straight into a pole or another car. My beautiful limited Chanel glasses were gifted to me. I cried when they broke 1) because they were a gift; 2) because I couldn't immediately afford a good pair of frames like these myself while paying student loans. I was hoping a settlement would come through to pay for them, but since I won't be holding my breath, I bit the bullet and on a whim I walked into Cohen's Optical at 414 86th Street in Bay Ridge. The best decision I've made in a very long time. Dr. Alexis Kapoian and staff were at the height of true professionalism. I want to thank Dr. Kapoian, Yana, Alla, and Ínez, even the girl who gave me a ponytail holder, for all their efforts in assisting me in finding a beautiful frame, quality lenses, and most importantly assisting me in the financial help I needed via Care Credit. I truly walked away from this experience with deep gratitude and amazement at their patience, honesty, and kindness. Thank you, thank you, thank you for putting humanity back into customer service. I invite everyone in the community to please give this store a chance with your business. I will be referring everyone I know to this Cohen's Optical. They won't let you down. Amazing customer service! I went in with a prescription from my fancy Manhattan Neuro-opthamologist so when Cohen's recommended I let them do an eye exam anyway I said no I have a prescription "I trust my doctor, he knows what i need" Famous last words! My doctor completely messed up my prescription so when i picked up my beautiful new glasses , took them home , wore them for a bit I then realized my new fancy glasses made things worse Back to Cohens the next day- crying - they called the docotor who admitted he made a mistake ! Cohen's fixed everything for me , they gave me an eye exam and had me walk around for a long time looking at things to try out different lenses to make sure this pair would be the right pair. I picked them up today and they are so much better. The only glasses chain my family has used for years. We tried the Bensonhurst location but I didn't care for the workers nor did I trust one woman as far as I could throw her. The Bay Ridge location has all friendly staff and a pretty nice selection. My last two glasses I got from here always got and still get major compliments from others. They also have an in house eye doctor which was alright and with the coupon, worth money you'll pay for the most part. But if you can go to a regular eye doctor, I suggest it. read more

Cohen's can obviously be hit or miss: it all depends on which one you go to. I've been patronizing this one for years and have never had anything but a good experience. They can normally fit me in within a day, which is awesome. I've seen two different eye docs here - both were great. Also happened to meet someone a long time ago who I think was the owner, and he was especially friendly. I just get a good vibe from this place in a way I don't expect from a chain. Obviously Nick is the shining star. I hadn't been to the store in over a year; he remembered my job, the friend I came in with last time, etc. All the things you rarely find in customer service anymore. I've only gone there for contacts so can't really speak to their glasses selection; but Nick did help my friend pick out two frames that look great on her, and she still likes three years later. read more

OK, so for full time eyeglass wearers, finding a great place to have your eyes checked and get the right pair of glasses is key. Plus, if you're a bit picky and want to work with professionals, optician choices are even more narrow. I recommend Cohen's at 414 86th St. The staff is very professional, knowledgeable, and patient. I worked with Kelly and she was excellent. The manager, Yana, was also very helpful and both worked with me to help me understand pricing and insurance questions. Dr. Coleman and the tech staff conducted a thorough exam with all sorts of hi-tech equipment and the doctor's consultation helped my understanding my needs as my eyes are aging. Then they try to make themselves seem like they're so considerate for letting customers try on "so many glasses," when that's their actual job and it's part of the process to try on multiple pairs of glasses before you decide which is best. The russian lady with the grey hair and one of her assistant's were really misleading and tried to pull one over on me and my insurance company as well. One of the worst customer experiences of my life. The doctors I met with were courteous, professional and extremely knowledgeable and I enjoyed my time with them. After my examination, I was instructed to pick out eyeglass frames. The woman working with me was rude, confrontational, uninformed about my insurance, became contradictory when I began asking questions and made me feel uncomfortable. The sales woman told me that my insurance covered nothing, which was not true and other things that made no sense. I left and told them I would pick out a frame next time I was in for a follow-up appointment and work with someone else. my next visit, the woman who helped me pick out my frames was helpful and nice, although my paperwork was lost and I had to wait an hour to find it. After looking online to research the glasses I purchased for $300.00 I found them at a competitors store for $70.00. Additionally, they were presented as "designer frames", which is odd since this "designer" doesn't even have a website but they do have a wholesale location in Chinatown. I felt as though I was overcharged and brought my research to the store hoping to get an adjustment. The woman who I spoke to began accusing me of making this up and even if it's true, they offer an "experience" of purchasing glasses. I explained my previous experiences and how none of this equated what I would consider a positive customer experience. She offered me $100 store credit, which is useless in that store and told me that I wouldn't know fake from real. Regardless, I left with my glasses and a decision to never return to a Cohen's Optical. I reached out to the corporate office to complain but still have not heard back. With all the online retailers and options available, you would think they would pride themselves on their customer service. Doctor is great. However, the managers are good with fish and bait. When asked for the $99 frame and lenses, they dig into old boxes and get frames that were old and dusty. My boyfriend came in here yesterday evening because he needed glasses last minute for his drivers eye exam. When I called to make an appointment the girl on the phone was nice and super helpful and worked with us to allow him to set up an appointment 30 minutes after I had called them. Unfortunately I was stuck at work so I was unable to go with him. When he came in they took him in right away and the girls at the front desk treated him great as well as the doctor. The doctor was good. The doctors assistant was good. The gentleman in the frame department was good. However, they did 0 work at managing expectations. I had no idea what was going to happen after I signed in (saying I needed new lenses) or how long it would take. Furthermore, the Russian or Polish woman with the grey hair was her usual high pressured sales self. For that reason alone, I'm going to get my lenses elsewhere. She makes clients feel as if they're in the wrong, don't know anything, etc. I asked for my prescription and said that I was going to shop around d and might be back. She and the nice gentleman had a whispered convo that I could hear, and came back to give me a discount. Only, I didn't want a discount, I really do want to shop around. So it all started when I needed to renew my drivers license... I found myself on Good Friday walking into Cohen Optical where several pleasant women greeted me upon entering, which was a nice surprise to be greeted so pleasantly...that rarely exsists anymore! They directed me to the insurance desk and of course i forgot my vision card and in top of that could not remember my provider. This is when I met Suzie. What a sweet patient professional. Suzie literally took the time to search through several providers until she found my information. After my exam and consult I was greeted again by Suzie to help me choose frames that looked perfect for me. She was honest about what worked and did not work for me although I had predetermined ideas she helped guide me into a great pair of glasses. Thank you Suzie! This place was recommended to me by a friend. Went in for a routine exam and left with a new pair of glasses, contacts and eye drops. Dr Alexis Kapoianwas very knowledgeable and professional. She treated me with the upmost respect. Didn't recommend any unnecessary treatments like my previous doctor. All I needed was some tear duct plugs for my dry eyes, which helped tremendously. I bought contacts here last Aug 2015. I was extremely satisfied with both the owner and the eye doctor. Last Thursday I made an appointment for today at 1pm. She was able to find me in their computer within seconds. When I handed the woman my Blue Cross card today she ask me if this was a medicaid card. I am not poor, homeless or 65 so I asked to speak to someone else. The next lady took five minutes on the computer and could not find me. She called someone else over and they were then able to locate my account. They then asked me if I was here for glasses??? I left - AVOID THIS PLACE!!!! read more

Groupon buyers beware - store does not honor deals they put up. I purchased a Groupon worth $260 (inclusive of eye-check) toward prescription glasses. In my first interaction over the phone, I was told to cancel the deal (which was not possible) and informed about rather non-negotiable terms - which were never mentioned in the 'Fine Print' with the offer. I decided to go ahead anyway and visit the store, scheduling an appointment. I had a talk with the store assistant, who showed me $ 199.99 glasses she said she could include in the package, after which I selected a frame I liked and proceeded with the eye exam. I kept off the eye exam till after I made my frame selection, since the store assistant had told me upfront that I would need to pay separately for the eye exam if I did not end up buying glasses - again, something that was not mentioned in the original Groupon offer. I was surprised when at the time of billing, I was asked to pay extra $$. Store assistant was rude and kept arguing about how she had 'handled many Groupon customers before me' and that I would need to either pay the extra $$ or pay for the eye exam. Important to note here, is that the Groupon deal was inclusive of eye exam + prescription glasses. Store assistant further told me she had nothing to do with Groupon (contradictory to her statement of dealing with Groupon deals, plus they were selling services on Groupon, how can you not care about what your deal says on Groupon!!!), and that I could go ahead and cancel my deal (despite the fact that I could not, dont know what scam she was trying to sell) and did not care at all about the money I had already paid to Groupon which Cohen's had received (I assume). I ended up paying for the eye exam since I did avail that service, had found the optometrist to be good and felt on Thanksgiving eve that *someone* should at least show some sense of ethics and decency, but I am never returning to this store for glasses or any service. read more

I can confidently say I will not be going back to this location. The first time I went for a scheduled eye exam. I was right on time, but, the eye doctor wasn't even there. I was waiting for 30 minutes before the doctor saw me. Everyone was sitting around and flipping through the T.V. channels. It seemed very overstaffed. They were nice though, so I figured I would give them a second chance. Maybe it was just an off day. Unfortunately, my second experience with them was even worse. I called 3:30 PM asking for my eyeglass prescription. The woman gave me a hard time, saying that it was given to me during my appointment which was 4 months ago. Clearly, I didn't have it anymore or I wouldn't be calling. Finally she said, "it will be out in a few hours". I found it very strange that I would take a few hours to send over a prescription. At 6:30 PM, I still didn't receive my prescription, so I called back. The woman told me that I called during their busiest hour and getting my prescription "takes a while". Which is funny, because my previous appointment was around 3:30 PM and it was dead. Also, the email containing my prescription consisted of a photograph of my prescription and nothing else. It was sent less than 10 minutes after I got of the phone with them for the second time. I find it absolutely ridiculous that not one employee could have taken less than 10 minutes out of their day to provide good customer service. read more

The Service is the worst I've ever seen in my life the store should be Closed immediately. The women that work in the front store especially the big Ukraine women are so rude to customers. I have shopped in this store from time to time for many years but I hadn't been in there for a couple years , it was run by a fine gentleman in the past.
