I have been going to this location for a very long time as well as both of my parents which makes good business for them considering the amount of glasses + sunglasses they have made for all of us over the years. On the day I called there was a snow storm and I called in to ask for pricing on a glasses, mind you I have the proscription and frames already (AKA all the info needed), ALL I needed was to know the cost of lens. The first time I called a guy told me he didn't know and that someone will call me back.... half a day later I called again and a girl named Georgia claimed that they don't "give prices over the phone" suggesting that I need to come in (which is far from home btw) just to have the same exact conversation with them/her in person. Makes absolutely NO sense. Not a great way to treat your long time customers, but def a great way to lose business. So sad because the people who used to work here were so nice, friendly and helpful. I ended up going elsewhere to get my glasses done and based of the prices I paid in the past it was slightly cheaper at the new location I found. The customer service is especially sub-standard, lousy. Cohen's on 71st had been my go to place, when it came to glasses, for 15 years, even though I had moved out of Forest Hills. I did not even compare prices. HOWEVER, the staff has completely been replaced. **Customers are NOT being treated with candor and respect.** I placed an order. I later set up an appointment with the optometrist/owner, Nick Protopapas, for the pick-up on 8/21. I re-confirmed an hour before the appointment, as I was heading over. To my dismay, Mr. Protopapas left before I arrived and stood me up. I lost 2.5 hours. I let him keep my deposit, and never came back. I was appalled at the surprisingly unacceptable sub-substandard of service which was provided. The prices are not any cheaper in that location. I had my eye exam at Cohen's because they take my insurance, the optometrist was fine, no complaints, and I did not wait for it, was taken in at the scheduled time. The saleslady helping me pick out frames was either purposefully or inadvertently wrong in the store's favor when she advised me that my insurance covers $100 towards frames when it covers $200. Then she told me that the frame I liked was $329, and when I came back to that frame 10 minutes later after trying on some others, she said the price was $399. I was like did not you just say $329, then I saw the little tag inside the frame that said $329. Now, if it had been only the mispricing of the frame, I would just say she got confused, but given that she also confidently declared at the outset that my insurance covered $100 instead of $200, I felt like I was being had. They put the lenses into frames that I purchased somewhere else and they were ready within a week, and they adjusted them for me when I picked them up, no complaints there. Too bad Stations Square Eyes does not take my new insurance, never had any issues like this over there. read more

On 5/19, I had eye exam and pick out several frames. The exam done by Dr.Nick was thorough and professional. But, the reason for this review is because of another employee, Georgia. I had a small problem with my insurance. She went the extra mile, to help sort it out. She could have just thrown her hands in the air; and said nothing she could do.But she didn't! She went the extra mile. She reminded me of a time when employees were professional and had a work ethic. Georgia is proficient in what she does. Customer service is clearly her Forte! Georgia is the reason I will always come back. I have already recommended this store to friends and family. With the special note, you got to see Georgia! Lousy place. The Optometrist, who introduced himself as "Dr. Nick" had me wait in his "office" for 20 minutes because he had just woken up (he lives nearby) and was not ready for work. I let that pass. Then, Maria kept inflating the price of my glasses, claiming that she was new there and did not know much.... Hmm... Then she called Dr. Nick who is also the owner of the place. He made me dizzy with all kind of calculations that did not make sense and gave me a revolting price, in the hundreds. I took my business somewhere else. This location goes above and beyond for their customers. I had been on my last contacts (my fault!!) and came in for a visit. I was a new customer to this location. I was helped by Ashley who I'd have to say goes above and beyond her professional calling. She is incredible!!! I got an appointment ASAP. I had to wait on the optometrist to get back from lunch but it wasn't even like 5 minutes. I got a hold over pair which wasn't even necessary because the order came in that week ! They made up for my lack of planning. They were extremely accommodating and understanding. They helped me chose glasses that met my budget and I've even gotten complements on them for "budget glasses". Their expertise was helpful. The girl who takes care of answering phone calls doesn't answer questions throughly and lied about the way they operate. It's concerning that it seems there is some scammy business practices occurring in this Cohens. I've been in their system for nearly a decade and have updated my insurance each time. The girl told me they would never save client information and she doubts they would find me name, insurance in the system? That she doesn't know what insurance I have? Very poor customer service. I visited this location looking to replace my lost glasses, one of the receptionist seemed almost bothered by having to attend to customers, the other was professional and friendly but still just not eager or motivated. The location of this store is so that the staff should at a minimum have a welcoming attitude. I left and walked over to the competition less than a block up and it was a complete upgrade to this location. I have gone there before, last time I went, on January, I brought my dad and bought glasses for the both of us. Spent over 1000 dollars out of packet in glasses, exams, etc, and that was with Insurance! Two(2) Months later my dad's glasses fell apart, and 3 months later my glasses fell apart. And they won't fix this problem, I went there in April, it is now June and they are still waiting from the manufacturer to fix my issue! Gave me the most expensive price in New York City!!! Even Lens Crafters, not exactly known for discount prices, had price that's 33% less than Cohen. Stay away from Cohen. Seriously, this is like Kennedy Fried Chicken trying to charge Smith & Wollensky price. Absolute nightmare! If you're in Forest Hills area, I highly recommend American Vision Care - just around the corner. Friendly staff and optometrist. I found a Groupon for $25 that entitled me for a vision check AND $200 off glasses. Sounds like a great deal, right? After I got my Groupon, I made my appointment for 6:30 pm. I didn't see the doctor until 7:30 or so, but he was nice enough. Unfortunately, he was also answering phone calls during the appointment (2 during a 10 minute visit to be exact). The real fun started after I saw the doctor. I was looking at frames and the gentleman helping me informed me that I needed to purchase the glasses immediately if I wanted to take advantage of the Groupon. He then, he told me that if I wanted to take my prescription without getting a pair of glasses, it would cost me an additional $50. He then smugly told me it was part of the fine print on the Groupon. Fortunately my eyesight, although labored enough to warrant a visit to an optometrist, still allows for effective reading. There was no fine print that said anything close to this and I called him on his lie. Not believing me, he decided to read it himself to double check. He was lost when he realized he was wrong. The owner then came by and informed the salesperson to give me my prescription. That's probably a good thing as an optometrist is required, by law, to release prescriptions after a refraction test. I had a few days left to claim my 2012 insurance benefits so decided to just wing it this time... I had a few choices in the neighborhood so I decided to check out Cohen's, strictly because it's a name I've heard of. Let me tell you, this place is a JOKE! I made an online appointment for 10:30am which was confirmed by Cohen's, but upon arriving on time, I was told that the doctor comes in at 11am and they were "meaning to change that on the website..." wtheezy?! Okay... I came back a half an hour later and this was the scene as I walked in: one elderly lady helping a customer, everyone else just standing there staring into lala land, oh except for one young lady who was surfing bloomingdales.com behind the counter... I finally got the attention of one of the sales people and filled out some forms. I then proceeded into the examination room with the doctor. Call me a germaphobe, but don't most places have those sanitary sheets for you to rest your chin on the machine? This place did NOT, nor did the doctor bother to wipe down and disinfect the chin and forehead rests. I laughed to myself because the whole time I tried not to touch the machine with my face, so I was pretty much hovering in that area, but the doctor kept telling me to move closer... eeek! And not mention... holy crap did his breath stink!! kickin' like a muay thai boxer!! I was cringing as he told me to move closer... and to top off this sundae, this creepo kept calling me "Sweetie"... how unprofessional. Alas, after all the hovering, breath-holding and cringing, I was directed back outside after the exam and spoke with the first saleperson about ordering contacts. I must agree with the other reviews here that this place inflates their prices like crazy.. I've never had to pay this much... EVER for contacts and I've been wearing contacts for 15+ years... Last week my sister gifted me Tiffany's frames for my Birthday in Jersey, would have purchased lenses in New Jersey but the store did not have an eye doctor on premise that day. Not a problem will have lenses put in local eyewear store on Austin who takes my Unfortunately the Optical Store who takes EyeMed was closed. Frustrated, decided to give Cohen's on Austin a chance since Carl has been kind to adjust my 3 year old Prada frames for free. Walked in, was immediately greeted by Fran and Carl. Out of respect for Fran being Sales told her have frames which needs lens. I asked Carl what the cost is for Single Vision lenses he told me the price, it was a lot less than LensCrafters. Carl asked me if I wanted "Progressive and/ or Anti Reflective." Carl began to provide me with Product Knowledge of "Progressive" and "Anti Reflective." Since I was in a hurry for doctor's appointment, and low on money told Carl "whatever lens are in my Prada (from 3 years ago) is fine, I can't afford to pay additional." Had my eyes examined immediately. The Eye Doctor was very sweet- she sanitized instruments, and equipments, to include her hands before she started the exam. Very thorough, went through each testing told me what she was doing and what she was testing for. After the doctor adjusted my new lens prescription Carl told me to give him 30 minutes to cut the lenses. The new lenses were installed in less than 30 minutes- Express service!! Carl told me "give it 24 hours for your eyes to adjust new prescription, and as always feel free to come in if I need frame adjustment. A week later, realized need to use my optical insurance before end of the year. Went to another store to purchase my another frame. I did not purchase lenses from the store I bought the frames since they estimated 7-14 days for lenses to be ready. The cost of lenses at the other optical store was about the same as this Cohen's location with my insurance plan. Given the superior customer service and honesty I received at Cohen's, why would I spend money at an optical who had blasé "I really do not care to work with you" attitude because "you are using EyeMed insurance." I prefer to spend my money at Cohen's with Carl, Fran, and Juan who cares about their customers. I prefer to pay out of pocket for professional, fast and friendly service at Cohen's than "insured" optical with an attitude. Thank you Carl and staff at Cohen's for your superior customer service. I hate when people try to rip me off, and unfortunately, the sales person in Cohen's is what he tried doing. I went shopping in various places for new eyeglasses. I became attracted to titanium glasses because they are so light weight. I found a pair of brown Konishi titanium glasses that looked great on me! I asked the salesperson how much would it cost with high index and anti glare. He told me it would cost $380 with my DC 37 voucher. As he was telling me the cost, instead of him checking high index, he checked polycarbonate. Wow, he must think I'm really stupid. He had this sheet of paper right in front of me and it's not like I'm stupid and not know what polycarbonate is. He wanted to charge me for high index when I would only get polycarbonate if I bought glasses from him. I was also interested in these metal thin brown frame glasses (not titanium) that my union would cover. I was aware high index and anti glare would cost extra money. He said I can have those glasses for $205. Are you kidding me? High index and anti glare for $205 is overpriced. To prove how much of a rip off this store is, I told him his prices are really expensive and told him I went to Lens Lab Express for titanium glasses and charged $180 for both high index and anti glare. He gave me this look, lied to me and told me that it's impossible to get titanium glasses for that cheap. Of course, I walked away. I also went to Mandarin Optical in Elmhurst and I also found Konishi titanium eye glasses! The sales person in that store, Michael, charged me about the same price as Lens Lab Express (he no longer accepts the DC 37 voucher, but he still offered a good price). Stay away!! This place was so ridiculous! There was this woman who looked like reincarnated Jaja Gabor who LOST this woman's credit card on her way to completing a transaction! The elderly lady, who was the customer, was dumbfounded by her idiocy. The clerk blamed her for the whole thing. In the meantime, the sales agent helping me was extremely rude and difficult. She immediately asked for my medical card and started putting my information (including my DOB and social) into the system. When questioned, she was snappy and downright rude! There are MANY eyeglass options in this neighborhood and some great businesses that deserve your patronage. Maybe better business for their competitors will teach them to get their act together. Wendi was amazing!! So warm and sweet. Especially during a time like this, this is the type of atmosphere to be around. I am thankful for Dr. Protopapas. who helped me. Please beware of the practices here! They tried to charge me for a PD measurement even though it was included in the price of the exam because I wasn't buying eyeglasses from them. I spend $199 on an exam and contacts. However, this was not enough to treat me with respect and dignity. If you don't mind being milked or have money to spare, then you will have no issues. If you are a smart consumer trying to save $, they will treat you like garbage. I hope NY gets on board soon with the other states like NJ, which require doctors to include the PD measurement in the prescription. You are always entitled to your prescription copy. I had recently broken my glasses and was in he neighborhood when I saw this place on the corner. I walked in and received friendly customer service immediately. I asked about the $99 frame collection and was led there and helped with trying them on. There was no pressure to purchase expensive designer frames, which is what majority of the store is composed of. They asked if I wanted an eye exam at that moment, I said yes, and after waiting about 5-10 minutes I was seen. The Doctor was very very friendly, fast and knowledgeable. My exam took a total of 10-15 minutes, and I was told my glasses would be ready in about 30 minutes. Overall, I had a very positive experience here and I would certainly recommend it to a friend. read more

The store is such a mess and disorganized. I was 2nd in line to get eye exam, but they kept on letting others going before me. I waited 40 minutes and the sales rep. told me the Doc. is going to call me in a few minutes and I'm next. A minute later, I saw the doctor called another person in for eye exam. So I asked the sales rep. why she's going before me while I was told I'm the 2nd in line (at that point, I think I became the 4th person). Then, he told me "oh, the lady had an appointment". Lost my glasses and needed a new pair quickly and was able to get a new pair in a jiffy. The service was friendly and was able to help me find a cheap pair that actually looked good on me and not too old fashioned for less than $100 for the frames so it ended up being free under my insurance. When I found the same pair that I lost, I still wanted to keep both glasses and they were nice enough to adjust the glasses that I didn't buy there for free to better fit my face. No charge, no questions asked. This place is really convenient for me to go to, but would probably recommend shopping around for prices if you are on Austin street. The optometrist here is excellent. He gave a thorough exam, explained all of the tests he performed, and an easy to understand explanation of the results. It is one of the best refractions I have had. The optician showed me different styles and price options for frames. They were upfront with pricing. I was lucky, and they were able to make my glasses on the spot. Everyone was friendly, helpful, clearly like what they do, and working with each other.
