Hi everyone. La colada is a sore disappointment. I bought several dishes and was excited to try them! After eating them, I wanted to cry, or just go find some people from Cuba to talk to so I could compare my reaction to theirs.
I entered with high expectations. I left really, really disappointed. Would Cubans be disappointed in this place too?
Cafe Colada (Colada Shop) in Rockville/ Potomac has all the fun and hype of good marketing, adorable bags, attractive color schema, cool interior design with a patio, fun merch such as the adorable mug that says cafe con leche, and engaging promotional material like the take out bag that says "This is how Cuba does coffee. This is how Cuba does food. This is how Cuba does cocktails. This is how Cuba does social. We call it Cuban-ism. Let us transport you."
I did get transported, but to yuck, not yummy. I was kind of angry. After buying a beef empanada and a spinach and cheese empanada, I call it fake. The only thing I was transported to is American fast food fried dough with some cheddar cheese and a lump of frozen spinach thrown in there. It tasted of materialism, and a quick way to make a buck, not of the love, care and TLC that should go into making empanadas. How can they sell their empanadas and be proud?
I remember my friend who, years ago, sold empanadas from her home. She was from Chile. Every weekend her home was packed with friends who wanted to buy her freshly made empanadas right out of the oven. Yes girl! It was worth the wait every time. THAT was food. THAT was social. THAT was empanadas. Dignified ones.......que nos dejaban con ganas de comer mas, que dejaban en alto el nombre de la empanada, con toda la dignidad y la gloria que se merecen las empanadas.
The beef empanada at Cafe Colada was probably the sorriest excuse for an empanada I have ever experienced. I was so hungry though, so I ate it. I kept hoping I could convince myself that it was better than it was.
The empanada was cheap, had thick, fried bubbly dough and was stuffed with a bunch of hamburger meat (no other anything). The hamburger meat was not particularly tasty at all. It seemed like they just cooked the ground beef by itself, without even adding onions. Huh? Yes. True. The cheese was the wrong kind (is Cuba into American Cheddar cheese?) and the dough was unpleasantly thick. Really thick. Goya's frozen empanadas at Giant are better than the ones I tried at Colada Shop today.
Overall, the Cafe Colada shop, to me, has bling seemingly without substance.
I tried the mamey batido. Again, that would be a no thank you. So much sugar and ..I guess frozen mamey. I have never been to Cuba, but the mamey batido I had today, I am sure, cannot compare to a fresh, authentic one. But kuddo's to Colada for trying.
Instead of road rage, I had a mild case of "empanada rage." I was so disappointed. The empanadas I ate simply do not deserve the name empanada. The owners cannot possibly approve of them, or do they? Then again, maybe in Cuba what I ate today would be considered a good empanada. I am not sure. As of yet, I have not had the privilege of going to Cuba or of having Cuban friends.
After eating food from Cafe Colada today, I would probably spend my money elsewhere if I wanted to try Cuban food. I remember the Cuban Corner in Rockville. It was great! I am not sure if it is still there. If I could not go to Cuba, I would first try many other places in the DC, MD, and VA area before trying Cafe Colada. I may give them one more shot because I did not try their coffee today. My expectations, if I return, will be very low.
Did I say my expectations would be low? Very. Cuba deserves better. read more
