We recently had our wedding rehearsal dinner at the Colby Inn. Jeff was a fabulous host and his staff is second to none. Jeff set up the Garden Room and comfortably seated 26 people. The dinner and desserts were amazing. We stayed the night and the next morning, we were welcomed by Jeff and had a wonderful breakfast that was included in the room rate. My family of 3 were looking forward to an excellent Thanksgivings Day feast. It was anything but. The staff's attitude was generally non- committal to cold. The cheese board I thought was fine, although my wife and daughter thought the assortment of meats seemed passed their expiry date. My wife's squash soup had separated and appeared to have an oily film on the surface. She stirred it and it mixed together. The main course turkey white was dry and very grisly and did not have much texture to it. The dark meat was extremely dry. The mashed potatoes were OK but the gravy was mostly AWOL!. There was a dab of cranberries and a decent assortment of vegetables. The dessert was served mine was a chocolate cake and some how they managed to get both sides stale! Not just a little stale but 3 day old stale. We told them about most of the issues and they gave us $25 off and 4 slices of white meat that looked like loaf. Eaten there before and mostly found it enjoyable. But spending $350-400 and getting this is not acceptable. We could have gone to the Red Arrow diner and gotten a better meal for $75. read more

We stopped in for a late dessert on the spite of the moment and in the true fashion of hospitality the front house staff welcomed us with a smile and set a table for us. If you have never been here it is worth a stop as the food is always fresh and new and the desserts give meaning to the word "Savory!" I have not stayed at the inn as we live close by, but the Grazing Room Resturant should be on your list of top places to stop on New Hampshire if you live here or are passing through. read more

I am so incredibly impressed with my stay here that I would LOVE to return & have already told so many people about this wonderful place! You have to see for yourself! I wanted a tranquil place that wasn't too far from home that we could get away to for a night. I hadn't heard of this place before, but I had a feeling I would enjoy it from other guest reviews. I booked room #7 for one night 7/13-7/14 to celebrate my 5 year anniversary with my boyfriend. There is so much that I plan to write here, but let me start off by saying that the staff is so welcoming! Both Bruce (the chef) & Jeff (the innkeeper) welcomed us & Jeff brought us to our room. He gave us some background information about the property & offered us beverages if we needed any while we got settled. The room is quaint & I was sure to take pictures to always remember! The bed was comfortable, the entire room including the bathroom were immaculate, & I actually liked that there wasn't a TV in this room! There is a TV in some of the rooms & there is a sitting area with a TV & games to enjoy. When we arrived, we had about an hour before the dinner reservation that I had made so we decided to explore. As many people have mentioned, the grounds are BEAUTIFUL & well maintained! I can understand why people would host a wedding or a party here - it is perfect! We spent some time sitting in the gazebo & walking around enjoying the nature. We loved having the opportunity to take some quiet time & "unplug" from all of daily life. One of the most fun parts of our stay was going out to give the goats treats! They were so cute & definitely knew we were coming with treats because they were pretty excited to see some strangers headed in their direction! I have many pictures of them, as well! After exploring for a bit, it was time for dinner & I could NOT wait to experience The Grazing Room. It isn't often that we get to enjoy farm-to-table fresh food! The menu changes with what is available (which makes sense). It is a bit more on the pricey side, but it is fresh, fine dining so it should be expected. The kitchen was out of the rib-eye that my boyfriend had wanted, but instead he had the lobster dinner which was about $48.00. I immediately knew that I wanted the Summer Risotto (risotto is my favorite!) which was one of the least pricey meals on the menu at $26.00. We started with a cheese plate that was scrumptious! Again, I did take pictures, so check them out! In the background jazz music was playing; it was so calming & fitting for a romantic evening. I don't believe there were many guests staying during the time we were there, but that kept it more intimate. The next morning, breakfast was included (a small gratuity was requested) & there were 2 options. Danielle was our server & she was so pleasant & attentive! We started out with a parfait & a muffin that were delicious! Then we had the choice of french toast with a mixed berry compote or a Mediterranean dish called "Shakshuka" with fresh goat cheese. We each ordered 1 of each & tried a little of each other's. WOW. Just WOW! It was incredible, seriously. Check out was at 11 & we had some time to kill so again, we walked around the grounds & had a visit with the goats before parting ways to head to our next destination (Merrimack for the Budweiser Brewery tour!) While the rest of the world was excited to bring 2020 to an end, we found a slice of perfection in this rustic, cozy inn with the charm of a New Hampshire mountain farm and attention to detail of a 5 star restaurant. The accommodation made for a perfect New Year's Eve celebration. The staff and owners attention to detail was second to none. The bed and sheets so wonderful we did not want to leave the bed! Our room had warm morning sunlight coming in from over the mountains. The food infuses local flavors, vibrancy and style into this sleepy mountain ski town. This place is a massive hidden gem. We stayed 2 nights and the only downside of the weekend was having to leave. The innkeepers, the property, the breakfasts, the hospitality, the town of Henniker, the distance from Boston... Everything about Colby Hill Inn made for a perfect and relaxing weekend getaway. The food was especially noteworthy. It stood out from surrounding restaurants by a long shot, and it's definitely worth a visit even if you're not staying overnight. The property is also picture perfect. If I was planning a wedding, this would be my ideal location. And with lots of fire places and foliage to see in the colder months and an in-ground pool and beautiful gardens for the warmer months, I think it would feel magical any time of year. This quaint old inn gets five stars for the restaurant setting. We went for their advertised "high" tea. Although the soup, sandwiches and cookies were yummy. To cal this high tea is a misnomer it was buffet style and the set up for service was not explained well to us or any other table. A lovely choice of cocktails is served as part of the tea then a soup and salad are served to you. But that wasn't explained correctly so most tables got up and started serving themselves sandwiches before the cocktails or soup and salad were served.. the tea was an afterthought which would have garnered the whole experience a lower rating except the food was good. There was warm water in carafes and you picked a tea bag from a basket which you had to scrounge for a flavor you liked. But the water was not hot enough to steep the tea. I even asked for fresh hot water and they jUst brought out another carafe. . I would recommend for lunch or dinner BUT not to anyone looking for a tea experience. read more

We stayed in one of the carriage house accommodations. The whirlpool tub was a nice touch, but there were a few things that needed upgrading within the room. The star of the show for us was the amazing dinner and breakfast served at the inn. Farm fresh and made to order, we were pleased at each meal. Finding hidden gems like this leaves one with the dilemma- to review or not to review. I would love to keep this to myself, but the rest of New England should know. A welcome retreat in any season. My family and I recently visited the Colby Hill Inn. We stumbled upon it by the best possible means--the recommendation of a local. You know what they say, "locals know best", and fortunately for us, the old adage rang true. Once we entered, we were immediately greeted by a cozy old home, decorated with paintings, rugs, and comfy chairs. Every room had a nice, quaint feel. One of our rooms even featured a gas fireplace with a couple chairs for lounging. While the inside of the inn was impressive, the best views were to be found outside. The parlor and dining area featured tall windows, giving you a full view of the five acre property outside. It snowed a few days before we arrived, so every glance out the window was akin to staring at a postcard. A few times, my family and I walked through this postcardesque view to see what the property had to offer, and we were not let down. At the edge of the property is a small creek, separating the already impressive landscape from beautiful farmland. At the other end of the property there is a barn with goats. The front desk offers free treats that can be fed to the goats, adding to the homey farmhouse experience. You can even get $10 credit towards breakfast if you can get a picture of all the goats lined up in front of their name plates (good luck!). Although we did not look at it (I'm pretty sure it was closed when we visited it), it feels worth mentioning that the property also features a pool. Bringing everything together was the delectable food that the kitchen featured. As the name bed and breakfast suggest, breakfast was indeed included with our room, which provided a great opportunity to get the family together every morning. Breakfast featured two courses: a yogurt parfait with some sort of baked good and a second course with a couple options, usually a healthier egg dish and a sweeter bread option (e.g. French toast, waffles). Every morning we were filled with anticipation to discover what our breakfast options would be that day. Jeff, the innkeeper/owner, was an excellent host. He served us every morning with the upmost hospitality, really adding to the human aspect of the experience. Overall, if you want to stay at a place that will be just as memorable as the rest of your trip, give the Colby Hill Inn a try. I promise you won't be disappointed! read more

I have never stayed at the Inn myself, but I have had family from out of town stay here, and I have joined them for the delicious breakfast that is included for Inn guests, and it is out-of-this-world delicious! My family had nothing but 5 star plus things to say about their stay - from the comfort of the rooms, to the accessibility and kindness of the Innkeeper and Chef, who own the Inn. I have had brunch and dinner in the Grazing Room Restaurant more times than I can count, and I will continue to go back as often as possible. The atmosphere is charming, the food is to die for, and the people are welcoming and kind. After an arduous day of hiking at nearby Mount Sunapee, my husband and I looked forward to relaxing at a warm B&B. Colby Hill Inn did not disappoint, with its quintessential New England setting, warm furnishings, and friendly service. The charming, idyllic atmosphere provided the perfect place to unwind, and we were also impressed by the inn restaurant's ability to turn out some of the tastiest food and cocktails we've had in awhile. Stayed at the inn for a leadership retreat meeting. The space was perfect for the 17 of us. Everyone that stayed overnight had their own room. I was in #3 which had a working fireplace, tv, and super comfy king size bed and private bathroom. The inn was very clean through out. Much of our meeting was held in the big dining area and was set up for good interaction and discussion and we utilized the two sitting areas and smaller dining room for smaller break-out discussions. The food was incredible. We had dinner, breakfast and lunch. I'll post more about the food in The Grazing Room. All staff were very courteous and friendly and super busy the whole time we were there. We spent two nights here to celebrate our 10th anniversary and it did not disappoint!!! We found a great deal on Travelzoo so we upgraded to one of their suites, which was an amazing deal--we probably wouldn't shell out the regular price for the suite but we would love to return if only for the food!!! The inn is very cozy/homey. Clean and comfortable. It was great to splurge on the suite, the whirlpool is excellent and housekeeping provided great smelling aromatherapy salts for the tub. But the Grazing Room is the big draw here. They did not skimp on breakfast!! Beautiful parfaits or muffins, and some sort of choice of a hot entree. The food was excellent. Nothing fussy and you can tell it was crafted with care and plenty of attention to detail. We came for dinner one night and had easily one of the best meals of our lives! Great drinks/wine, atmosphere, and service. The charcuterie and cheese platter isn't one to miss, great variety. The menu changes often but I had the duck, and it was perfect. My husband had the steak and ate everything. Really outstanding experience and we look forward to returning!! read more

The most friendly owners and staff I've met anywhere in recent years. The name says "Inn," but it's an excellent bed and breakfast. We were so comfortable there. Our room was awesome, and we enjoyed every minute of our stay. Some rooms even have fire places. We had trouble getting the fire started using fire starters, and then jumping to large logs. Some twigs, sticks, and medium-size pieces of wood would have helped us start the fire that night. I suggest getting a room with a gas fireplace, assuming the small to medium wood isn't available. First of all, this place is incredible and this review is long overdue. The first time I stayed here, I was planning a birthday surprise for my boyfriend. We stayed here for three nights and skiied at Pat's Peak nearby. The whole experience was a dream from start to finish. The innkeepers are kind, thoughtful, and have seriously thought of every detail. Our guest room was perfectly clean and had a fireplace + everything we needed to get the fire going. It was SO nice to come back from skiing all day to our cozy room and to be able to get a real fire going. The breakfasts we had here were - no exaggeration - the best breakfasts I've ever had in my life. All in all, I loved the personal touches, the kindness and positive energy of the innkeepers, and the coziness of the inn. I was recommended to Colby Hill Inn by a family who live in Henniker as great place to stay for an evening. However, they made no mention of the incredible food and the fact it was a 5 star rated Inn. Well, to my surprise I had no idea what I walked into. I called to make a reservation for dinner for my son & his girlfriend at the inn, when I told thm it was dinner before the prom I was asked if I would like to give a credit card number for the meal so my son wouldn't have to worry about the bill; I thought this was very considerate & indeed helpful. So on prom night my son and his girlfriend went to dinner & came home not raving about the prom but the wonderful dinner they enjoyed! He had never had goat cheese before but now he wants to buy a goat I think we'll just go to the Inn when he gets a craving though. Stayed at the Colby Hill Inn last weekend for a 60th birthday party. We expected a place to stay but we had a great experience instead. The Inn is beautiful and in a great setting. We had a gourmet breakfast every morning. The party was also at the Inn and the food was great. The grounds are beautiful. The hosts, Jeff and Bruce, work so hard to make everyone feel at home. We will be back to stay and have dinner. The only amenity we haven't tried yet is dinner so we are ready. And if you go don't forget to feed the goats. The desserts are terrific. Hands down this Inn has the friendliest staff and owners ever. Ever! Beautiful room, excellent meals and they bend over backwards to make you comfortable and feel welcome. We brought our little one year old and were worried about how we would keep her milk since she was no longer on formula. We just decided we would have to buy milk wherever we were eating when she needed it. EVERY SINGLE TIME we asked for some milk for her at the Inn ( normally at a meal or before bed) they refused to charge us. Are you serious? In this era of businesses nickel and diming the public to death you refuse to charge us? They even offered baby a sippy cup (though we had our own) and she got a little duck from the owner when he found out she was teething. People, the service does not get better than this. We dined for NYE. Granted you should expect a busy evening. We waited - 1/2 hour to be seated.... 1/2 hour for water..... 1/2 hour for drinks and an hour for a mediocre dinner. This was an 8:00 pm seating and we barely made it home before the ball dropped. I thought I could blame it on NYE - but no... bad service... bad wait staff... bad meal.... bad everything. Went last night for my bday dinner and it was awful!!! We had warm water and asked for more and still no ice in it and it was warm. My husband got his salad AFTER his entree, his slow roasted chicken was tough as hell and my halibut had absolutely no flavor. Service was slow. I went to the Argentinian wine dinner this past Friday night and was blown away by the wine, food and service. The night started out with a scallop ceviche that was so fresh and filled with flavor. The presentation was beautiful with the plantain chips. I also had Pumpkin Gnocchi that was out of this world- I loved the maple syrup/cider reduction that was on it. Third and fourth courses were Lamb Empanadas and Carne Asada. Dessert was amazing, my favorite was the mini spiced chocolate pot de crème. What really stood out to me about this dinner was that the actual owner/wine maker was there from Argentina and he spoke about his family and the vineyard. It was really neat to be drinking the wine and hearing the story of how it came to be. Another thing I really enjoyed was that Chef Bruce Barnes came out with every course to talk about the food and its relevance to the culture in Argentina. My wife and I were in Henniker to visit our kids at camp. This is the 'swankiest' place in town and, really, even though the ambience is pleasant, the food is absolutely mediocre. The menu is pretty limited as these places go and it feels like the cook could make this stuff in his sleep- it is that dry and uninspired. Everything is plated in a rudimentry style and tastes flat. Nothing seems fresh, which is a shame , as we have had really great local ingredients in other New England towns, such as Woodstock, VT. The waitress had no clue about the wine list and amazingly enough neither did the bartender. The wine was a tad bit warm. You get the picture- this place has gone long past it's usefulness/effectiveness. Although I have spent more for bad food I would save your dollars for something else, like the BBQ joint in Hillsboro, NH, only 15 miles away. read more
