Your nostrils are hit with the wonderful smell of ice cream and waffles. (They gotta make a candle with that scent!) And the creations are literally endless. Whatever combination you can think up, they can put it in a cup. The servers were courteous and quick to whip up the creations. My fav is the Cookie-Doughn't You Want Some, with some brownie bits added in for good measure. About four years ago I had a customized cake ordered and delivered successfully. Things must've gone far downhill, because I tried for a day on the website to order a custom cake and kept getting a baffling error that said "Error, please make a selection for End of Item." I tried on Chrome on the computer, chrome on my phone, the app, remade the cake twenty times, received this same error that would never let me add the cake to the cart, though the button was indicating it was complete. I need the cake in 2 days, so I want to give 24 hours in advance, I called the store. The worker who picked it up was fine and polite, but the manager... He didn't listen, and just repeated "Yes you can order online." I know the staff probably don't have control over the app. But holy crap this guy did not listen. He just spoke over me repeating that "Yes you can order online." I wanted to see if I could order a delivery on the phone but he just... kept doing that online repeat. I once again repeated "But can I order on the phone?" He said "But you'll have to pick it up." At that point I said "sorry" and hung up. In the end I did discover that... custom cake orders online are broken, but the pre-made ones worked. But this was a special cake so it was a disappointment. I went to Coldstone today and ordered my fav Mud Pie Mojo. I mentioned the ingredients that go in it and asked him to please put them all in because last time 3 ingredients were missing. I wasn't mad or upset I just wanted it with what they say is in it. I told him that I thought the employee was new so no big deal. The man I spoke to told me another time I was there that he was the owner. After I mentioned the previous trip he said "so you want it all in there". I said yes and listed off the ingredients. It's supposed to have almonds in it. The nuts were not almonds, maybe pecans or walnuts. I called on Sunday to order a cake for Thursday since their online ordering system didn't accept gift cards. I gave the associate all the details, everything was set. It was nice that I wouldn't be baking it all myself -- I'm a cake decorator. On Thursday, I call the store and ask if my cake is ready, the guy says, "yep, it's ready!" And I said -- don't you want my name and maybe phone number so you can check to see if my specific cake is ready? He goes, oh, so you want to place an order? We can't have a cake ready by today. I was thoroughly confused. I told him I already ordered a cake and wanted to get it. He then said it was ready -- again without asking my name. I specifically asked him to check before I drove 20 minutes to get it. He takes my last name and goes to check. He asked me what flavor it was and I let him know -- then he says he found the order and the cake was in fact ready. Great! I drive across town, get to the store, the cashier brought the cake out and I looked under the order form while she rang me up -- the cake says Happy Bithday -- there isn't an "r" in the lettering. It looks pretty obvious and/or bad? $40 for a cake where "birthday" is spelled incorrectly? The cashier says "it's just a small r" hoping I will accept that answer. I took the cake and left, I wasn't going home empty handed for my husband's birthday. The cake itself was alright. The ice cream is fine, a little mushy even when it's in the freezer. Cold Stone holds a lot of memories for me when I was back in grade school. It would be the ultimate treat to get one of their ice creams and seem them make it right in front of you. The ice cream is definitely indulgent! Super creamy and dense. The ice cream is sweet, so I feel extra appreciative of the sizing options as I usually go with the smallest (I like it) size. I like how toppings are crushed right at the moment so they are larger chunks. When I arrived the first thing I noticed was how badly it smelled of cleaning ingredients, my appetite was ruined immediately. I walked up the the ordering station and as I am looking at my options I witness the owner of Coldstone Creamery stick his hands into the garbage without any gloves on, he was pushing down the trash not picking something out. He noticed me and came to get my order without gloves or washing his hands. It is already disgusting to serve me without gloves but after sticking his hands in the garbage is unacceptable. I have a peanut allergy and I broke out in hives later that night, I wonder why. I am VERY upset with this establishment. I will be considering SUING because now I am traumatized. I also saw him after take his coworker into the back and yell at her for unwrapping chocolate too slow, she came out crying. I also noticed some bugs flying around the bananas, again, unacceptable. This place either needs to be shut down or needs a new owner/ needs new management. I'm a huge fan of Cold Stone - I've loved it since I was a teenager... but tonight was the worst experience I've ever had. My husband is out of town and I wanted to do something fun with our toddlers, so I talked up the ice cream experience to them in great length. We drove 15 min in the bad weather because I specifically wanted them to have fun sampling and choosing their own ice cream as opposed to ordering it for them from a drive through. Neither of them have been to an ice cream shop before, and my oldest was beyond excited. We got there and the one employee working was in the back on her cell phone. She made eye contact with us and then walked farther into the back so that she was essentially out of view. I assumed she would wrap up her call, but she didn't. Five minutes passed, then ten, and my kids became impatient. My oldest had already picked out the flavors she wanted to try, and we were were anxious to order. Now fifteen minutes passed, and the employee clearly did not plan to end her phone call. I told my kids that we were going to have to leave, and both began to cry. I glanced over my shoulder and saw the employee walk to the doorway and peek around it to watch us leave as she continued to talk on her phone. Time has not been kind to this Cold Stone Creamery location. For a while, it was the next great thing - there always were long lines of families anxious to get their butterfat and sugar fix. The buzz has faded and now those same families flock to the local froyo joints to get their frozen dairy fix. I stopped by this weekend while shopping at Greenway Station and found the store devoid of patrons. I know it's been a long, cold winter, but we Wisconsinites love our ice cream and Babcock Hall was standing room only when I visited later that same day. So why does my ice-creaming loving family now generally eschew Cold Stone? * Texture - I really prefer a firm scoop of ice cream and that's not what you get at Cold Stone. The texture is far too gooey for my liking. It's not terrible, but I much prefer the denser texture of the product at Babcock Dairy or The Chocolate Shoppe any day of the week and twice on Sunday. The other textural problem is that Cold Stone ice cream melts too fast, so bring a gross of handi-wipes when bringing the kiddos here. * Flavor - The ice cream here is too sweet. At Cold Stone, it is all about excess, whether it be about the butterfat content, the sugar content or the oversaturated flavorings. Again, it's not terrible, but it's just not my cup of tea. * Serving Size - The theme of excess carries over to the over-the-top serving sizes. While I am not a huge fan of froyo, at least I can control my serving size when I visit the near-by Menchies or Orange Leaf. In addition, while I'm on the topic of serving sizes, can I just add that I detest the cutesy "Like It", "Love It" and "Gotta Have It" serving size names. * Service - When the place first opened, the staff was energetic and responsive. I admit it was hokey, but I kinda liked the dorky songs they sang when you left a tip. But now, a trip to Cold Stone is more like visiting a gulag. Leaving a tip rarely triggers a response, much less a chorus of "Ice cream, baby" sung to the tune of Ice, Ice Baby. My other pet peeve is that the tables always seem to be sticky, thanks to the soupiness of the ice cream. It's really kind of a depressing place to visit now. * Pro tip: If you have a peanut allergy, have them clean the stone before they mix your ice cream or you risk cross contaminating your treat. Honestly, Cold Stone has the best ice cream I've ever had. Maybe I don't get out much, but this stuff is fantastic. This particular location always comes through - it's clean, the staff are friendly, and they are very accommodating (throwing some take-home concoctions in the freezer while we eat our current order in the store). We never get Cold Stone without a coupon, however. Yes, it's fantastic, but expensive. Various coupon books (Entertainment Book, maybe the Bucky Book?) will provide BOGO coupons, or buy one, get one $.99. That helps. Favorites include: Me: "Strawberry Shortcake" (made with cake batter ice cream) Wife/kid: cake batter ice cream with brownie in it kid: well, anything chocolate, but he loved the banana ice cream too. As I walked in I was greeted with a warm hello and was surprised by their large variety of ice creams and toppings to choose from.
