Love that they have a vegan ice cream place. I can't get enough of it, actually. I knew we had to come here during our trip, I feel compelled to try vegan spots when I am visiting a new place. I was even more thrilled that they had superman ice cream, which I learned was a local specialty ice cream flavor during my Detroit research. Sub 20 degree temperatures were not going to stop me. The place is SO CUTE and they gave both of us a free cookie "for trekking here in the cold". The ice cream was SO GOOD. It didn't have quite the same punch of flavors that the regular version I had elsewhere but it was enjoyable nonetheless. GF ordered the cookie dough which was even better. Nice little vegan ice cream shop. Friendly service and cool vibe. They have a limited selection of ice cream and change their flavors occasionally but whatever the flavor is it is usually pretty tasty! One thing that I really like about it is that usually vegan ice cream or soft serve can lack that creamy taste but the Cold Truth blend has it! If you're vegan and in the neighborhood I suggest you try it out! read more

Popped in here with some colleagues when in Detroit on a work trip. We got there about 2 minutes until closing but they'd already shut down the machines ... but... they had pints available in the freezer case. We bought three different flavors and sat outside to enjoy them. We had the Superman, Honeycomb, and Chocolate peanut butter. They were all so good! Would love to try the fresh from the machine as I assume the texture is a bit different / softer. The employee had the door locked and was walking out within 2 minutes of our purchase, so it was obvious that she was planning to close early and was not anticipating any last minute customers. When I used to work for a frozen yogurt place, we were not allowed to shut down the machines until after closing. We are glad we had the chance to try the ice cream though. read more

Still my favorite ice cream shop around. Creative flavors like ube, espresso horchata, and pins colada. But they change weekly, so there's always a surprise around the corner. They have gotten better updating social channels with flavors weekly, but it's not always accurate. This easy to find, easy to order ice cream shop is in midtown. Street parking. Near so many fun local shops. Make a day of it walk around with your cream. There is one or two indoor tables and several on a patio if you want to hang. Hours are fairly late on the weekends too. read more

I really enjoyed my ice cream but my mom didn't like hers. It was bland. She ordered chocolate flavor so I recommend getting the toppings for sure! There was a long line which made sense because the place is the size of a shoe box but it's so so cute in there. Definitely a great stop on a Sunday afternoon. read more

Definetly the best vegan soft serve I had. They have only few flavors but I think they do rotate them from time to time, and they offer few topping options. They were out of waffle cones so we went with cups, regular size which is plenty. The ice cream is very rich and fluffy, just like a custard soft serve would be. The base is cocunt but you can't really taste it. My husband got the sweet cream with dark chocolate glaze but unfortunately the machine broke so me and my mom had to go with a different flavor so we decided on lavender with caramel drizzle. I was a little skeptical about this flavor but it was delicious. Very subtle flavor. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. They have few tables so you can sit and enjoy your ice cream and while we did that, a lot of people showed up so I guess it's a popular place. That makes me happy. Vegans or not, we all are enjoying amazing soft serve at this place! read more

I'm giving 5 stars because if you are vegan or lactose intolerant, this is great. If you're looking for an ice cream replacement though, it's kinda weird tasting. Texturally, it's fantastic, very smooth. I got the sweet cream flavor and it's good but it didn't have that richness cream usually has. I got a kiddo cup and it was still a pretty decent amount, but if I come again, I will definitely just get the small! I had a blue moon drizzle that was delicious and I'd eat a whole cup of that to be honest. My friend got fruity pebbles as a topping and when she got to the middle they put some there!! It was a cool surprise! The girls working there were so nice too, I couldn't decide between the horchata or sweet cream and they offered me samples of both! The horchata had an icier texture, but it was still really good. There's some outdoor seating and when the weather is nice, it's great. I saw a lot of people buying a cup and taking to go though and they also sell pints if that's something you're interested in! read more

Vegan Heaven. Go to here. The smell wafting from the order window is literally what Heaven must smell like. I just had the Superman popsicle with blue moon drizzle and it was everything. That blue moon drizzle... I saw some of the tempting treats come out of the window, and I can't wait to go back for a sundae. The staff is so friendly and there are tables outside as well as a dog park across the street. There are little shops nearby and with Cass Cafe a short walk away, it could be the perfect vegan afternoon. Make sure to head down this summer! read more

I get that vegan soft serve isn't for everyone, but truthfully that's their loss. The Cold Truth is a delight. Their flavors change regularly and I appreciate how natural tasting they always are! With that being said, some of the flavors aren't super potent or sweet and I prefer it that way! At my most recent visit, I got the strawberry which tasted more like a sorbet. Overall the texture is definitely one of the more creamy non-dairy desserts that I've tried. Heads up that the portions are quite generous and usually I end up wishing I got the Kiddie size (but not because it isn't delicious!) read more

Very yummy ice cream that has fun holiday flavors! I initially thought they had non vegan options but it turned out everything was vegan and I was pleasantly surprised! The soft serve was velvety smooth with nice vanilla bean flavor. Then topped with fruity pebbles made it even better. The line can get long is worth a try! The area is really nice with shops nearby to browse as you eat this delicious dessert. read more

We were finishing off our evening and there was one last stop. Despite all of us being too full to move, he wanted my niece to try this very cool vegan ice cream spot. I have never had vegan ice cream so I literally had no idea what to expect! Would it still be tasty? Would it be gross? Who knows? This spot is located almost next to the dog park. This made me so happy. I wanted to go into the dog park and lay down and let all the puppies come and roll all over me. But I decided that may be a little weird so I refrained. This ice cream spot serves the ice cream out of a window and there are several spots to sit outside. It was a beautiful evening in Detroit and the streets were bustling! This was clearly a very popular location. My niece and I ordered the chocolate banana ice cream and he decided on the chocolate coconut. Both were so delicious. The servings were generous and the cost was on par with the quality. I would absolutely come back. I adored this little area and everything was within walking distance! Fantastic!!! read more

Rating a generous 4 stars. We made a special trip to try this soft serve. To be entirely honest. ..it was super regular. The flavor wasn't robust and actually pretty flat and faint. Great texture though. The Fruity Pebbles cone was probably the best part. The service was exceptional and efficient. Another one of those places that isn't bad, but considering the hype is was a let down. 2.75 stars for the soft serve. ..bumped up for service, photogenic qualities and in support of small business during difficult times. read more

The chocolate ice cream with the chocolate drizzle and Oreo topping sounded pretty good. It was $6.83. It's all vegan here. Here goes nothing. It looked good. The chocolate ice cream wasn't too bad, the drizzle was a bit crunchy. The Oreo tasted decent, the small crumbs of it all around the perimeter. The ice cream wasn't bad, it had an oddly unique flavor to it, must be the lack of dairy in it. I can't say I loved it, it was okay. read more

I don't know why this is listing Cold Truth as closed, but it's not! It's open & operating safely during the pandemic through a walk-up, to-go window & it's absolutely delightful! All the options right now are vegan & it's my new favorite place to get ice cream! I'm not a huge sweets person, so I really prefer Cold Truth soft serve to anything else I've found recently. All the flavors I've tried are much more creamy than they are sugary, which I love, and it makes the ice cream feel a lot more light as well. They currently have a flavor called Big Gretch & I strongly recommend EVERYONE try it (everyone who ordered after us & while we were sitting at one of their patio tables eating it sure did)! It is named after our wonderful Michigan governor & tastes like fall in a CUP. There's pumpkin & vanilla soft serve with roasted pecans (which were honestly my favorite part & I normally hate any nuts in my ice cream) and an spiced apple drizzle! It was truly perfect! Cold Truth is always changing their menu on a day to day, week to week, and month to month basis, so every time you go - there will be different options available to you! Surprisingly delicious soft serve vegan ice cream I've tasted for the first time. The pineapple with blue moon drizzle was a perfect combination together, while the chocolate soft serve with caramel drizzle was a mistake. At first was in doubt of trying vegan ice cream so we opted for the kiddo size starting at $3 each cone. Never doubted since then. Service was fast and I liked the different size choices! I got the chocolate with biscoff and it was mediocre. Unfortunately, the chocolate had a grainy, icy texture compared to the vanilla. It also tasted more bitter than other ice cream alternatives I tried. Would love to try a different flavor, but was not worth the $6 I paid. read more

This place was delicious! We got in line right before a number of other people got there. The line moved a bit slowly, but the employee was super nice! They didn't have any waffle cones, so that was a bit disappointing, but the soft serve was great! My husband and I got chocolate - him with biscoff and me with caramel. My dad got sweet cream. Everything was great and my dad said he would travel out of his way to eat here. Too bad we don't live in Michigan! read more

Be careful going here. If your tip is not to owner's liking he tracks you down (using your credit card) and shames you online. The ice cream tastes fine, but there are other places that taste just as good where you won't get shamed if you don't leave a huge tip. read more

The saying goes "truth is beauty, beauty truth". But Keats never got a chance to try Cold Truth, because it might have been more like "truth is beauty unless it's vegan, then it's not. Really really not" To be fair, sometimes the truth can be a shock and disappointment. So maybe the owners took that into account when naming the place. I should be honest here: I don't think vegan ice cream works. I think there's really delicious vegan pastries, brownies, etc. But frozen coconut water tastes like coconut. No matter how much lavender you put into it, it still is just liquid coconut. Now with a slight hint of laundry detergent. I'll admit, though, it's very pretty. So it'll make a good addition to your instagram. But not to your belly. I guess you could say I couldn't handle the truth. read more

BEST. VEGAN. SOFT SERVE. EVER!!! It's that simple. It's THAT good. Came 45 minutes before they closed. They only had two flavors left: sweet cream and pumpkin. I tried the sweet cream vanilla flavor with two toppings: strawberry dust and graham cracker on a waffle cone! Honestly, the serving is huge! I could have had a kids size and would have been satisfied. The sweet cream is this thick luscious vanilla with a smooth creamy consistency. Nothing about it watery or lacks flavor. The graham cracker topping seems to be home made graham cracker and was delicious. That strawberry dust though.... I wish I could sprinkle on everything. It's made from freeze dried strawberries and added a great flavor. Overall, I WILL BE BACK SOON! Don't overlook this place! read more

THE. BEST. Soft serve vegan ice cream in town. They'll be getting a storefront of their own, supposedly just in time for winter. I loved them when they slung cream in an alley, and I love them at Grandma Bobs... I'm super excited to see how brick and mortar of their own can continue to improve upon the perfection that is Cold Truth. Sooooo good. I seriously would never know their ice cream is vegan, and I'm very picky about it. (Lactose intolerant but vividly aware of gritty, chalky substitutes, which this is not. This is perfect smooth amazing soft serve.) I love all of the seasonal specials and the portion sizes are super generous. If you're covid conscious, this is a walk up window as well, so ideal for that. read more

FIRE!!!! We ordered black vanilla and lavender swirl. The vanilla was so smooth, rich and full of flavor. It was black in color just for Halloween! Lolol a great touch. Vegan ice cream, bagels, and hot chocolate...what's not to love?! We always enjoy stopping by for a treat at Cold Truth. They make each item to order, so don't expect lightning fast results, but it's worth it! Just bundle a bit extra during these cold months. The storefront is welcoming, as are the workers. The merch is on point. I do wish the toppings were a bit more gracious, but the ice cream itself is so good it makes up for it! read more

Once my flavor was selected I went to the very best part of Menchie's, the topping bar. They have a variety of toppings from fruits to Nuts, cookie crumbles and what is probably my favorite waffle wafers. To make things even better, the store was offering a cup that you could fill without weighing, for $4.99! If it fit in the cup it was yours! I would definitely return. All that made this area a big dead end it made no sense to venture into if you're not a Wayne State student or employee. This Sevs does some serious business. I'm guessing it does the most volume of any 7-11 in Detroit. Only the one on Jefferson between downtown and Belle Isle and the one in Cadillac Square offer any real competition and I'm guessing this college Sevs crushes em. Parking here sucks. I'm not keen to feed the meters and even if i was spaces are scant. Late night on the weekends, though, after metered hours, when I'm getting off my restaurant job grind and have a taste for some junk food this place is banging. Like crazy busy. Like I almost feel like I'm in an 80s movie or TV show where the convenience store is this happening hangout. There's more space here for hot food - pizza, wings, hot dogs, taquitos, etc - than I've ever seen at a Sevs and they keep it moving, too. The hot dogs are no doubt unhealthy but I at least feel like they haven't been rolling around on those metal cylinders for hours. The slurpee and Big Gulp stations are bigger than usual as well. And there's usually three employees on as opposed to the one or two you'd usually see. Even still the line at the checkouts gets stacked pretty deep - seven, eight or nine at times. One night I came in a bit earlier, around ten and it wasn't jumping, only a couple other patrons besides me. Late night, though, students with snack attacks are rolling deep. As you can imagine things can get pretty messy here sometimes with all that foot traffic. The employees do a reasonable job I'm sure but the customers just work even harder at tearing this place up. The trash can by the hot dog station just isn't close enough to it either. The cops are ALWAYS in here, too, even more than a regular 7-11. That night I came in earlier than usual was I think the only night I didn't see police in here and I've probably been to this Sevs at least 7 or 8 times by now. No good cheap dollar beverages here, they only stock the big Arizonas and even waters run more than a buck. They do actually have a couple functioning water fountains, though, for some reason. This 7-11 is just really extra and sometimes I'm in the mood for that and sometimes not. If you need late night convenience around here after the mighty Marcus Market closes and you don't feel like fighting the crowd here I recommend Midtown Market.
