This review is going to be somewhat hard. I'm a Wayne state grad (many years ago anyway) so when my wife mentioned this place I said let's go try it. We went on a Saturday so the limited parking wasn't a problem but I'm sure that during the weekdays parking close would be a consideration. The menu has many choices so finding something you like shouldn't be hard as long as you want a potato base. Place was small with only a few tables (several carry outs while we were there eating). The food was made in a timely manner and all ingredient's that were fresh. Food also has a nice visual presentation. Food came in a plastic box so taking leftovers home was a breeze. Food had good taste and a generous portion size. OK, I'm saying all these good things, why no 5 stars? It just doesn't seem to meet that standard. Personally I thought it was a novel idea to try a jazzed up potato and it was, but going back, well I don't think I'll make the trip. If you're looking for a novel fast food meal with friendly service and fresh ingredients in a generous portion go here. If you're looking for a more sit down family type of meal go elsewhere. So you see my dilemma, there is nothing to ding this place for. It's a solid value but just isn't my cup of tea. Would I recommend this place? Sure, with the understanding of just what it is and no more. Clean fast friendly service fresh food ingredients presented well with a novel twist but I would suggest that they try putting some beans and/or chile over the potato's. The concept was ok. A baked potato situation with multiple options for a potato as high as your head. There were many different options, more than I could ever dream up on my own. Staff were great. I was with a large crowd and the place is not very big so seating was a challenge. Most people grab and go. But they have a huge menu board with pre-made potato options or you can make your own. The ladies behind the register were helpful and offered suggestions freely. Food was hot and filling as you would expect. The first thing I noticed in the upgraded interior(again I haven't been here in 15 years). They have big screens with images of the most popular items and the full menu. I ordered the house potato (chicken, bacon and broccoli) with mixed cheese and garlic butter. The cashier told me it would be about a 10 min wait so I went to sit in my car. We stopped in here after walking around the Wayne State campus as it is right across the street. The place is very clean (even the bathrooms) and we had great service. The Potato Place is okay for a takeout lunch. Some of the potatoes on the menu range in price from $10 to 16. Pretty overpriced for a large baked potato with inexpensive toppings like bacon bits and freeze-dried chives. The restaurant is around Wayne State University and it is really difficult to find free parking. If you manage to find free parking you will have to walk around the block. There are better places to eat in the area but if you are craving a lot of carbs, cheese, and butter this might be a decent option. read more

We ordered Lunch through Door Dash today. I ordered the Philly Supreme Cheesesteak Potato. Funny it didn't look like a Philly Cheesesteak on a potato, with all that broccoli. It more like mixed vegetables with cheddar cheese . Don't let me start on the firm chunks of beef some with fat attached. I was looking for tender thin slices of meat , that wasn't there either. Yeah, I was underwhelmed by this lackluster meal. It was also on the dry side. For a potato this size you'll need to use quite a bit of butter to help keep it moist. I think the quality has went down and the price has risen with this place. I really didn't want Potato Place because the last time I had it, I didn't enjoy it . Sometimes you must take one for the the team. They can definitely do better in the future with the quality, taste and presentation of their food especially if they going to charge you an arm. Oh yeah you're going to pay extra for butter, sour cream ect.. especially if it don't come on it. So this was my first time having potato place. This was delivered by door dash so my review is in food only not the service. The portion sizes are huge!! This was a nice value for the price. Topping choices/combinations are plentiful here. Food was packaged well and not one drip leaked out. Great job!! My only dilemma and reason for the one star removal is flavor. My potato was bland, which was sad. You have to season the potato, there's tons of it in the bowl. Seasoning was an option that I did select, even asking for extra garlic butter. Just blah!! I started not to go here for lunch because as much as I like this place and missed the spuds, (I hadn't order their taco spud in quite some time) the parking is tough you have to get a spot at a meter but I thought I was lucky as there was an available meter space today. The picture in the restaurant when you order is the same as I remembered but the potato I received was nothing like the picture of what I ordered or what I was expecting. My order had sautéed red peppers, possibly with green peppers and onions. It was a sautéed blend with huge tomato pieces on top. Why not tell your customers that there is no longer fresh green peppers or onions on the potato. This should not be a surprise this potato looked like a red and orange mess. Disgusting. It was very disappointing. Plus I realized the change after I made it back to work and there was no time to take the potato back. Disrespectful! I called to ask about the vegetables thinking maybe they gave me the wrong potato and the party on the line stated that is how it comes now with sautéed (overly sautéed to me seemed they were from a frozen bag) vegetables. She didn't seem to care there was customer shock. Smh! If you are charging me $14.00 for a potato at least tell me you've changed the ingredients instead of having the photo of what it used to be on the wall menu. Just awful! A waste of money and time. So darn good! Reasonable prices for the portion as well. I had the Cajun chicken potato which was everything I ever wanted: cheese, Alfredo, chicken and bacon. Incredible. I'd probably add broccoli next time. I also got the meal, which came with a dessert and a drink. The strawberry cheesecake was delicious. I have had something similar at other places, and it never disappoints. My total at the door was just over $20. Very reasonable and this will become a regular in my diet. THE EMPLOYEE proceeds to ask if I still had THE POTATO. I told her I ONLY HAD HALF (but this was not my issue.) THE EMPLOYEE ADVISED to bring EVERYTHING I had remaining back and request to speak with the manager. After work I did just that. Tried this with my son after a trip to the Charles A. Wright Museum. We were very VERY excited to try this after The Potato Place popped up in a Google search of "restaurants near me." He has food allergies and I am kind of a picky eater (I like only melted cheese, roasted/rolled onions are great but I hate them raw, etc.), and this seemed to fit both our needs. The potatoes were huge, and they were cooked totally to the right state of fluffiness. I got the Cajun Chicken Bayou Potato. A little bit of heat - I would have liked a little more, a nice creamy ranch, loads of chopped, correctly-cooked bacon, and garlic butter. It smelled heavenly when I opened it and it tasted great too. My son got the Taco Potato. Ground taco meat, grilled onions and peppers and big hunks of tomato. It was even served with tortilla chips, so he was scooping his potato like a nacho. In my opinion, it would be better with cheese, but my kid is allergic to dairy. Only four stars because I would want more spice for something labeled "Cajun," (still a really good potato) and they only had 16 ounce bottles of pop/water; I think fountain pop/water in different sizes would be better. read more
