    Mango milk tea

This is new tea for me. It's pretty well as he described it. Great mango flavor against milk. I picked almond milk and it was still delicious. Also, great enthusiastic service.

Stopped in here for an afternoon pick-me-up before heading out to the airport. This small shop is family owned and operated, and has the feel of 'neighborhood favorite' as soon as you walk in. For starters, this spot has a variety of sweet and savory snacks for purchase. Some of the snacks on the shelves were very familiar to me as I grew up eating them, and others were your standard snacks for the road. Also, there are really cute pieces of handmade jewelry for sale which after conversing with (who I learned later was the owner) the barista -- I learned that his mom hand makes the jewelry so they could sell them in their family business. Love it! Next, let's talk about what I ordered. I chose the Durian Smoothie and it was legit the real deal. Now, Durian is generally not a popular choice because of its unusual stench but you will learn to love it with time. The smoothie was so creamy and had the perfect consistency of what Durian mixed with ice and cream should look and taste like. Definitely a 5/5 for me just solely on my drink. The owner was friendly and we were able to exchange small talk about life, family, and business venture ideas. Told him he should open another shop because the concept is dialed in. I'm happy to see this small family owned business keep the boba, coffee, and smoothie scene alive in midtown Detroit. I'll be in Detroit a lot in the new year, so I look forward to becoming a frequent visitor!

I originally visited Tou & Mai when I first moved to Michigan. Back then, it was one of only a handful of boba shops in the metro and the only one within city limits. As such, they didn't have much competition and were a little more lax with their drink construction than a typical boba shop. I have it in my notes that on that visit, the drink I had ranked in the bottom 10%. Well, nowadays, there are boba shops popping up on every street corner* and since Tou & Mai is still open, I figured they must have improved. Hong Kong's Finest ($7.59) - We subbed the herbal jellie with boba. Given the name of the drink, I expected a Hong Kong-style milk tea, but this is anything but. The barista also assured me that the drink isn't very sweet. I'd say that's a bit far from the truth - this drink is quite a bit on the sweet side and I regretted not adjusting it down. The tea taste is barely perceptible over the amount of condensed milk and sugar added. Unlike a proper HK-style tea, the kind of bitter/astringent punch of a strongly brewed tea is not apparent. The drink isn't bad, it's just too sweet and not something I would consider a HK-style milk tea. The boba is surprisingly decent. Unlike my previous visit, where the boba was rock hard, on this visit, the pearls had a nice chew on the exterior. The interior is still on the firm side, but it isn't terrible. (3/5) Although I still consider Tou & Mai to be a slightly below average boba shop, I can see that they have improved. If you're in Metro-Detroit and you want boba, you could do worse. Bathrooms - No customer accessible ones that I could see. *Okay, technically even now there are only two boba shops in Detroit proper, but there are a ton in the suburbs.

"Hello Hello" (Halo Halo inspired shaved ice dessert)

Four of us got the "Hello Hello" (Halo Halo inspired dessert) and one of us got the peaches and cream frozen treat. All were happy! Service was friendly and quick-very good attention to the building of all Hello Hellos-FULL of goodies!!! Yum! I have had two here and both were made with love. I really like the white cubes (coconut? Lychee?) and green jellies-floral... I do not know what every thing is, but I'm grateful that they have a really good variety. Such an interesting and fun dessert! I looked forward to it as it was my birthday and it was my "cake"! They gave me a second cookie in my dessert to make it even more special! I am a Michigander and am just fine with an icy dessert in January- especially when it is this epic! I hope everyone goes here and enjoys something new and extra special. I like bubble tea as well, but try something new! It's worth it! They have a bunch of cool imported snacks for purchase as well (chips, candy, frozen stuff, noodles...). A definite stop in the D for something refreshing in the summer too!

Avocado Smoothie with Almond Milk and Cheese Cap

Tou & Mai is the best place in downtown Detroit to get a smoothie, milk tea, or fruit tea. I first tried Tou & Mai last year at a Yelp event. See my review here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/yelps-elite-boba-break-at-tou-and-mai-detroit?hrid=0r-2nf0WTcUAwwpfNuWSfw&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) I returned recently to try an avocado smoothie with almond milk and cheese cap. It tasted so fresh and delicious. The service is friendly. Right now they are letting in one customer at a time so please wait outside until it is your turn to order.

Mango real fruit smoothie with boba and lychee jelly

Detroit is usually late with any major food trends and it's no different with bubble tea. Though the Asian communities in Madison Heights/Warren/Sterling Heights are blessed with plentiful bubble tea options (Ding Tea, Kung Fu, OneZo, Kuma, Quickly, Bambu, etc), there is a clear void in Downtown Detroit. I was hoping Tou and Mai would've been the one to take the reigns and become king of bubble tea in Downtown Detroit. Truth be told, my T&M experiences have left me controlling my bubble tea cravings for when I'm back in Madison Heights. Don't get me wrong, T&M provides all the bubble tea menu mainstays, toppings, and even specialized Asian desserts like the Filipino "Halo-Halo" named "Hello, Hello". They even have a small bodega-like shop inside, showcasing unique Asian candies and snacks as well as staple items, and boutique goods from local purveyors. But each and every one of my 3 visits have left me saying "meh". I've gotten the mango real fruit smoothie with boba and lychee jelly twice and each time I've regret-sipped all the way home while I begrudgingly drove by Bambu and Kung Fu as they mocked me and said, "told ya so". Maybe one day, a truly impeccable bubble tea place will finally settle into Downtown Detroit and dominate the market and get the whole damn city addicted to bubble tea. It just isn't now. Not yet.

One guest or party at a time allowed. It's good it's not too freezing out then. Ordering a passion fruit, iced with tapioca pearls. Also ordered a sweet mango smoothie as well, neat. They sell masks, Japanese and korean snacks and conical hats too. The passionfruit is a tea, it's dark and tastes okay. The mango smoothie tastes chalky and powdery, not fresh as claimed. :( My husband and I were both equally disappointed with each of drinks.

Tou & Mai is IMO the only boba shop worth visiting in Detroit although there currently is little competition. It's a small shop attached to Go! Sy Thai, so it's convenient to be able to grab some boba while you wait for noodles next door. The menu is by no means extravagant as you might find at other shops, but they have the basics and have add-ons as well. I typically stick to a classic milk tea with boba here and when I feel adventurous I let the employee make me their favorite drank (they get excited to do this and allows me to try something I may not have otherwise ordered). While you wait for your drink, you can also peruse their small goods section. They sell some Asian trinkets, drinks, and on-the-shelf food items as well which is very convenient without an Asian mart close by.

This place is right by the Wayne state campus and it's perfect to go to on a hot summer day or any day. I tried their butterfly effect drink and it was very refreshing! My friend got a milk tea which also looked tasty. The place is small but they have some seating outside and since it is attached to a restaurant, it would be nice to get food next door while drinking your drink from here :)

    Small honey longan tea
    Jessica L.

Tou & mai is my go-to spot for good boba. Their longan honey green tea taste exactly like the honey green tea back home. Small ~5$ The tapioca are a bit soft and not that sweet but the overall drink is still a solid choice.

I love coming here after-school the boba tea here is good. The staff are very nice and friendly and quickly get your orders to you.

I was even more thrilled that they had superman ice cream, which I learned was a local specialty ice cream flavor during my Detroit research. Sub 20 degree temperatures were not going to stop me. The place is SO CUTE and they gave both of us a free cookie "for trekking here in the cold". The ice cream was SO GOOD. It didn't have quite the same punch of flavors that the regular version I had elsewhere but it was enjoyable nonetheless. GF ordered the cookie dough which was even better. Such a great spot

I love ice cream, so I could taste that the base was coconut. I actually initially thought I was given coconut instead of the sweet cream flavor. The Oreo is layered at the bottom of the cups which I appreciated. However, the size was a lot smaller than I expected for the price (regular size with Oreo came out to around $7.50). The service was quick. There are inside and outside tables. The store is a cute shop right off of Cass. Ultimately, I probably won't be back, but I like to see this is an option for those who are vegan in the area.

I forgot this place was here as the bridge over Anthony Wayne drive to 3rd Street got taken out,…read moreseemingly forever and the bridge over Second was awol for the longest time, getting replaced by a new one that's trying really hard to be a landmark. All that made this area a big dead end it made no sense to venture into if you're not a Wayne State student or employee. This Sevs does some serious business. I'm guessing it does the most volume of any 7-11 in Detroit. Only the one on Jefferson between downtown and Belle Isle and the one in Cadillac Square offer any real competition and I'm guessing this college Sevs crushes em. Parking here sucks. I'm not keen to feed the meters and even if i was spaces are scant. Late night on the weekends, though, after metered hours, when I'm getting off my restaurant job grind and have a taste for some junk food this place is banging. Like crazy busy. Like I almost feel like I'm in an 80s movie or TV show where the convenience store is this happening hangout. There's more space here for hot food - pizza, wings, hot dogs, taquitos, etc - than I've ever seen at a Sevs and they keep it moving, too. The hot dogs are no doubt unhealthy but I at least feel like they haven't been rolling around on those metal cylinders for hours. The slurpee and Big Gulp stations are bigger than usual as well. And there's usually three employees on as opposed to the one or two you'd usually see. Even still the line at the checkouts gets stacked pretty deep - seven, eight or nine at times. One night I came in a bit earlier, around ten and it wasn't jumping, only a couple other patrons besides me. Late night, though, students with snack attacks are rolling deep. As you can imagine things can get pretty messy here sometimes with all that foot traffic. The employees do a reasonable job I'm sure but the customers just work even harder at tearing this place up. The trash can by the hot dog station just isn't close enough to it either. The cops are ALWAYS in here, too, even more than a regular 7-11. That night I came in earlier than usual was I think the only night I didn't see police in here and I've probably been to this Sevs at least 7 or 8 times by now. No good cheap dollar beverages here, they only stock the big Arizonas and even waters run more than a buck. They do actually have a couple functioning water fountains, though, for some reason. This 7-11 is just really extra and sometimes I'm in the mood for that and sometimes not. If you need late night convenience around here after the mighty Marcus Market closes and you don't feel like fighting the crowd here I recommend Midtown Market.
