Cute business for Asian treats and boba. It's been around for a while. Staff greeted me when I walked in. It's very small space wise. I had a free boba coupon that "never expires" on it. Finally stopped by today and they did not honor it. The staff said that was something with the old owner. Not sure of how that goes or why as it didn't say subject to change anywhere. I bought some Choco pies that looked interesting. $6.89 for a box of 12. They were good and remind me of a moon pie. No pricing listed on the shelf if that matters for you as a shop. read more

Stopped in here for an afternoon pick-me-up before heading out to the airport. This small shop is family owned and operated, and has the feel of 'neighborhood favorite' as soon as you walk in. For starters, this spot has a variety of sweet and savory snacks for purchase. Some of the snacks on the shelves were very familiar to me as I grew up eating them, and others were your standard snacks for the road. Also, there are really cute pieces of handmade jewelry for sale which after conversing with (who I learned later was the owner) the barista -- I learned that his mom hand makes the jewelry so they could sell them in their family business. Love it! Next, let's talk about what I ordered. I chose the Durian Smoothie and it was legit the real deal. Now, Durian is generally not a popular choice because of its unusual stench but you will learn to love it with time. The smoothie was so creamy and had the perfect consistency of what Durian mixed with ice and cream should look and taste like. Definitely a 5/5 for me just solely on my drink. The owner was friendly and we were able to exchange small talk about life, family, and business venture ideas. Told him he should open another shop because the concept is dialed in. I'm happy to see this small family owned business keep the boba, coffee, and smoothie scene alive in midtown Detroit. I originally visited Tou & Mai when I first moved to Michigan. Back then, it was one of only a handful of boba shops in the metro and the only one within city limits. As such, they didn't have much competition and were a little more lax with their drink construction than a typical boba shop. I have it in my notes that on that visit, the drink I had ranked in the bottom 10%. Well, nowadays, there are boba shops popping up on every street corner* and since Tou & Mai is still open, I figured they must have improved. Hong Kong's Finest ($7.59) - We subbed the herbal jellie with boba. Given the name of the drink, I expected a Hong Kong-style milk tea, but this is anything but. The barista also assured me that the drink isn't very sweet. I'd say that's a bit far from the truth - this drink is quite a bit on the sweet side and I regretted not adjusting it down. The tea taste is barely perceptible over the amount of condensed milk and sugar added. Unlike a proper HK-style tea, the kind of bitter/astringent punch of a strongly brewed tea is not apparent. The drink isn't bad, it's just too sweet and not something I would consider a HK-style milk tea. The boba is surprisingly decent. Unlike my previous visit, where the boba was rock hard, on this visit, the pearls had a nice chew on the exterior. The interior is still on the firm side, but it isn't terrible. (3/5) Although I still consider Tou & Mai to be a slightly below average boba shop, I can see that they have improved. If you're in Metro-Detroit and you want boba, you could do worse. Bathrooms - No customer accessible ones that I could see. *Okay, technically even now there are only two boba shops in Detroit proper, but there are a ton in the suburbs. read more

Four of us got the "Hello Hello" (Halo Halo inspired dessert) and one of us got the peaches and cream frozen treat. All were happy! Service was friendly and quick-very good attention to the building of all Hello Hellos-FULL of goodies!!! Yum! I have had two here and both were made with love. I really like the white cubes (coconut? Lychee?) and green jellies-floral... I do not know what every thing is, but I'm grateful that they have a really good variety. Such an interesting and fun dessert! I looked forward to it as it was my birthday and it was my "cake"! They gave me a second cookie in my dessert to make it even more special! I am a Michigander and am just fine with an icy dessert in January- especially when it is this epic! I hope everyone goes here and enjoys something new and extra special. Though the Asian communities in Madison Heights/Warren/Sterling Heights are blessed with plentiful bubble tea options (Ding Tea, Kung Fu, OneZo, Kuma, Quickly, Bambu, etc), there is a clear void in Downtown Detroit. I was hoping Tou and Mai would've been the one to take the reigns and become king of bubble tea in Downtown Detroit. Truth be told, my T&M experiences have left me controlling my bubble tea cravings for when I'm back in Madison Heights. Don't get me wrong, T&M provides all the bubble tea menu mainstays, toppings, and even specialized Asian desserts like the Filipino "Halo-Halo" named "Hello, Hello". They even have a small bodega-like shop inside, showcasing unique Asian candies and snacks as well as staple items, and boutique goods from local purveyors. But each and every one of my 3 visits have left me saying "meh". I've gotten the mango real fruit smoothie with boba and lychee jelly twice and each time I've regret-sipped all the way home while I begrudgingly drove by Bambu and Kung Fu as they mocked me and said, "told ya so". Maybe one day, a truly impeccable bubble tea place will finally settle into Downtown Detroit and dominate the market and get the whole damn city addicted to bubble tea. It just isn't now. Tou & Mai is IMO the only boba shop worth visiting in Detroit although there currently is little competition. It's a small shop attached to Go! Sy Thai, so it's convenient to be able to grab some boba while you wait for noodles next door. The menu is by no means extravagant as you might find at other shops, but they have the basics and have add-ons as well. I typically stick to a classic milk tea with boba here and when I feel adventurous I let the employee make me their favorite drank (they get excited to do this and allows me to try something I may not have otherwise ordered). While you wait for your drink, you can also peruse their small goods section. They sell some Asian trinkets, drinks, and on-the-shelf food items as well which is very convenient without an Asian mart close by. read more

Loved that I finally got an opportunity to try Tou & Mai! :) When I started working in downtown Detroit, I was wondering where all the bubble tea spots were. Turns out, the closest one was Tou & Mai all the way in Midtown! We seriously need more boba tea representation in Detroit, but I digress... As a Taiwanese American, I am always excited to try new boba. I was delighted to find this one is Hmong-owned & I think it really shows in their menu. There were quite a few interesting options that you don't normally see on a bubble tea menu & I'm very excited to come back and try them all! This time around, I got the mango milk (soy milk) tea + flan custard & the pairing was ON POINT! Mango milk sounds like the most delightful drink ever - I loved that you could get it as soy milk because I'm just not a fan of regular cow's milk - and their flan custard was PERFECT. A lot of places that have flan custard (more commonly referred to as "pudding") are often way too sweet and it overpowers the entire drink. Tou & Mai's flan was perfectly light & flavorful, but far from overpowering. The mango, soy milk, and flan all equally shared in flavors within the drink & it was the most enjoyable experience! I discovered bubble tea a year ago so I'm not an expert by any means lol. But the milk teas are really good and customer service is ALWAYS great. The baristas are really helpful if your interested in trying a new flavor. I typically get honey dew or mango milk tea but today I tried the "Hello Hello" (not a drink bit a layered dessert) and Matcha milk tea. I'm going to save the Matcha for tomorrow, I'm enjoying the "Hello Hello" ALOT more then I expected. The flavors complement each other and it's not overly sweet. I'd definitely get it again! I first tried bubble tea in Cincinnati OH. The spots I went to there definitely had a larger selection of teas. We were in the area taking our doggies out for a play in the doggie park. My husband mentioned th as Hubby and I ordered a large taro-coconut and the sister in law fancied the straight taro. Pretty good flavor actually since I do prefer my tea a little stronger. I'm one of those weird ones that like to taste the tea in my bubble tea. Not just milk and mix. So yes! The product does score big in my mouth. #WINNING This joint seems to be an mini grocery extension of Sy Thai,, the grocery items are minimal. Probably just the stuff that the "Americans" are used to seeing. Noodles, sriracha, chili sauce, etc. That kind of stuff. Everything is nice, neat and organized. This place was awesome we drove up to Sy Thai to go and couldn't find the place it's in the same building and connected by a little walk through. I had seen pictures of the Hello, Hello and just had to try it for its uniqueness and color. This isn't a dessert for those on a diet and here's why. The Hello, Hello consists of ube (purple yam) & mango ice cream, coco de nata, aiyu jellie, basil seeds, red adzuki bean, sala cider, coconut milk, condensed milk, wafer roll, toasted candied coconut with a cookie straw I really appreciated the mix of flavors and textures. I was able to mix different ice cream with different jellies and or shaved ice and I felt like I was eating something special. For the price of $5.95 you couldn't make this at home and it's something cool to try with friends from out of town or on a date. read more

As a huge boba fan myself, I was excited to try this new spot out. Unfortunately left a little disappointed. Not sure if there was miscommunication or if my order details were just missed or what, but unfortunately since at the time they didn't have tapioca balls (was well after opening and they said they still wouldn't be ready for 40 mins), which was a bummer in itself, I opted for the jelly substitute. Unfortunately I was multitasking and busy with other things so I never really gave a trial sip or much attention to my drink till I was much further away from the place. Only to notice, no jelly! This place is so cute and literally close to everything. It is the perfect place to stop by and grab a tea on your way to the dog park which is just around the block. The have plenty of milk teas or fruit teas to choose from. I tried the Jasmine Blossom Tea and the Strawberri with Mango Popping Boba. Both were simply delicious I also got a package of their Macarons, which are not made in house, but are made in small batches. They were the perfect texture and the flavors were unique and subtle. The store had lots of snacks you could grab and was easy to navigate. They also had a lot of cute little gifts you get people. Cute little bubble tea spot adjacent to Go Sy Thai at the corner of Canfield and Cass. They have a variety of boba teas, boba milk teas (with add on garnishes such as traditional tapioca pearls or basil seeds, etc), tropical fruit smoothies (like durian, mango, jack fruit, taro, etc), plus a few coffee drinks and shaved ice desserts. Two sizes for most beverages -- 16oz or 24oz and the prices range from $3.50 for the basic boba tea to $6.95 for the smoothies. During my visit this past weekend, I went with the basic passion fruit boba tea with the tapioca pearls and it was really refreshing on a warm sunny day. They also have a few treats like macarons and such as well. The shop is also part Asian market with plenty of imported snack foods, basic groceries, and accessories and beauty items (like face masks and the like). There's also a small frozen section with ice cream novelties, mochi, and a few other frozen grocery staples. They also have a few pre-made snack cups of more exotic fruits like baby bananas and a few other items that I can't quite recall but was curious to try at a later date. Service was pleasant and helpful as I was trying to figure out what to order. Price is about on par with what I've seen at other boba tea shops. Admittedly didn't look too hard at the prices on the grocery/housewares so I can't price compare that. Boba and halo halo in Michigan? Count me in! We made a stop at Tou & Mai after I saw it on Instagram. I'm a huge boba and halo halo fan and it's not something I'd expect to get in Michigan. Granted, it's Detroit, and not Dearborn, where BF lives, but still! I was super excited because BF loves taro milk tea, but there aren't any places near him to get it. He really enjoyed his taro milk tea, but I think I definitely enjoyed my halo halo more. It really hit the spot, since it was about 90+ degrees that day. The taro bubble tea here was just OK, and was a little flavorless even and the boba was standard. I asked for a JASMINE MILK TEA. probably the simplest and most standard drink that a Boba Tea place could make. After my sixth visit, I can with certainty that this is my favorite boba joint / specialty drink hook up in Detroit. They have the standard bubble tea fare, but their specialty menu is just insanely good. The black tea milk cap is SO GOOD, definitely more on the dessert side, but oh-so worth it. That flan is just yeeessssss. The magonada is pure artwork, and it's a great take on the traditional Mexican drink, very true to flavor.
