I first came in and a Nurse Lauren helped get me into a bed into the E.R. She was very nice and very understanding. Made me feel very relaxed when going into an E.R. can feel very anxious. It set my whole experience in a positive tone. Most the E.R. staff, including Bernie and Nancy, were awesome, but I want to give Lauren extra praise . Then I was admitted upstairs. where C.M.C continued to make my stay comfortable and welcomed. They always asked if I needed anything or help with anything. I also want to give a big shout out to Eve (Evelyn.) (Hopefully I spelt her name right. For a CNA she was really impressive. She works Saturdays to my knowledge. Always checking up on me, if I needed anything then I felt comfortable enough to ask her. She is a great worker. She even got me to laugh. When you are in the hospital for whatever reason, the last thing you think you will be doing is laughing. read more

When the house supervisor, who is a licensed nurse ... was told about the situation, I suggested they walk down to the ED and take a patient care assignment themselves. It was NOT an issue of COVID or the ED beimg overwhelmed. This facility blatently IGNORES what "grave disability" is and believes in "Treat Em ( or yeet em) and Street Em" so they can maximise what they are paid. I'm not sure how any of these yelpers can give this place a 5 star review. This hospital is horrible! My father was taken here after a fall at his assisted living facility and when I first came to see him I was impressed with the facility being clean and the people at the front desk were absolutely amazing. BUT after you get up to the second floor it's all down hill. The nurses are no where to be found when you do find them they act like you're invisible, and they don't make eye contact or try and answer any questions. I would ask the status of my dad's health, and they say I have to ask the doctor. And it wasn't just one nurse it was all of them?? Absolutely horrible bedside manner. I would even call and ask for status and the same thing they would say I have to ask the doctor??? So I would ask for them to have the doctor call me and nope they never called. Just one doctor called me the whole 2 weeks he was in there. My dad broke out in a rash from something in the hospital but the nurses just ignored it or maybe they never even realized cause they don't check anything ever. Also when they do something to him like change an IV or something they leave the trash all over the floor. There was even blood still on the bed from an inexperienced nurse attempting multiple times to get a vein. They also had to relocate my dad's dialysis port before he was discharged and he said he felt the procedure and yelled in pain over and over and instead of giving a little more numbing they just said oh your ok and kept going??? Avoid this place. Memorial and St Marys aren't the best either but at least you can get info from the nurses. They were gonna discharge my dad to a rehab without even notifying anyone. I would have never known if my dad didn't call to tell us. read more

This review is specifically regarding the ER department At College Medical Center in Long Beach (Dr. Christopher B. Mcdougal and Dr. Andrew Anh Tran) on Fri, Nov 29, 2024. I came in to get my second dose Rabies vaccine due to a dog bite that happened three days ago. I came in around 10:40am and was quickly accomdated by the receptionist and nurse to check my vitals and wrist band. But as soon as I got called in, I waited for more than 5 hours. At this point, I was very hungry and a bit shaky due to my low blood sugar. I had to ask a few nurses for a snack and juice. Some of the nurses weren't that helpful, most of them were gossping or watching sports on their computer instead of attending to their patients. There was only one doctor working, Dr. Mcdougal which was an elderly caucasian man that was beyond super slow. I can understand it was the day after Thanksgiving but I didn't understand with my situation was a simple second dose Rabies vaccine was taking forever. By the time it was clos to 3pm Dr. Mcdougal finally attended to me but he wouldn't order the Rabies vaccine due to the dog that bite me was unknown vaccinated. I felt like I wasted my time waiting so long for him to not order a simple Rabies vaccine which I had already got the first dose three days ago the day I got bitten. The second doctor came in. Dr Tran took over and attended to me. At first, I thought he seem kind and accomodating but then when I told him my situation of the dog bite and the dog was unknown for rabies vaccine he was completely condescending, rude, and heartless. He asked me if I did an animal report on the dog and which I didn't know I had to do. He kept telling me to make a report which I agreed to but at this point he was so hostile to me I felt like I wasn't cared for. He kept talking down to me and repeatedly saying, "You need to contact animal control", "Google it, do you not know how to use a computer???". It was hurtful to hear someone with a Doctorate degree and speak to you in a way as if you were stupid. This behavior is unacceptable especially when your a doctor caring for others, where is the compassion? The only good thing that he did was he did order me the Rabies vaccine but that was it. My assign nurse that helped me was kind and cared for me. I didn't get his name but after he administered the rabies vaccine, I asked him if I should continue the rabies vaccine series at my homebase hospital in Torrance. As soon as Dr Tran heard me communicating with my nurse he said "What did we just talk about???" I just kept quiet. I didn't want to argue with this doctor. I don't understand why he kept scolding me as if I was a 5 year old child. Dr Tran made me feel uncomfortable and antagonizing. He does not deserve to be working with patients with that type of behavior. I feel sorry for the patients and staff that have to deal with his superiority. It makes me question is he really a licensed internal medicine physician? I will never set foot in this ER location again due to this horrendous experience! read more

Nurses encourage that pans, diapers and catheters rather than assisting patients to the restroom with some dignity . Patient rooms are cluttered so that you cannot pass through especially if you have an IV. Charge nurse yells into her speakerphone all hours of the night and early morning so that you can't get your rest. Food is OK. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. DO NOT COME TO THIS HOSPITAL! I visited the emergency room today with my brother who was sent here from drug rehab. The young women at the ER desk need training in hippa laws and discretion when using patient information over the phone. The phone volume was as high as it can be on speaker phone while requesting authorization for a patient. Everyone in the waiting room was able to hear patient name dob and member Id number. This is an unacceptable violation of hippa laws. On top of that the wait in the er was insane seeing as there were no other patients in the waiting room for hours and we still weren't seen. The explanation that the woman at the desk gave was that patients are seen based on the severity of their issues, however there were no other patients waiting to be seen. The waiting room smelled like fences and urin and the security basically yelled into his Phone his entire shift. Customer service training is VERY NECESSARY. Insurance verification training is very necessary. New systems and processes is extremely necessary. It is very clear that patient care is not top priority at this facility. read more

This is by far the rudest, dirtiest, uncaring medical facility I have ever visited. Staff in the ER from the girl behind the ER check in window to the lazy staff in the back. E.R. dr. and staff got diagnosis completely wrong and my family member almost bled to death. He is now on life support at another hospital. ICU dr. told my family member because of his lifestyle Doctor's like him and hospitals like this don't want to use their resources to help him. My family member was brought by ambulance against his will. I believe Doctor's should check their personal opinions and bigotry attitude at the door. I did speak to the House manager in H.R. who seemed caring but clearly has no control over what happens in the facility. The doctors I saw are well beyond retirement age. The equipment is so old they are still using stainless steal bed trays from the 60's. The E.R. I was in had mold behind the sink and the floors and walls are filthy. Don't let your loved one suffer at the hands of this grossly incompetent hospital staff. read more

I went there because Memorial was packed and this is where the ambulance took me. Never again. Say "said" I was septic but I never saw an infectious diseases doctor. They wouldn't communicate with me and there was no doctor supervision or communication. I left after 3 days AMA because I couldn't get any answers or regular medication. I did see a cardiologist who told me I was ok. Go to Memorial as if your life depends on it because it does. read more

THANKFUL. GRATEFUL. APPRECIATIVE. TRULY BLESSED. I am naming names when it comes to the wonderful, caring and fully vested medical staff, support staff and cleaning staff at College Medical Center on Pacific Avenue in Long Beach, CA. They healed me through COVID-19 while my handsome hubby was being treated at another facility, in the ICU because COVID-19 is truly an ugly, nasty and devastating virus! Mask up people. Wash your hands and stay away from folks- keep things disinfected and keep your distance...this virus CAN BE STOPPED!!! On July 21st I was admitted. From day one, the ER staff were attentive, sincere and truly engaging to find out how they can help me. Leticia Angel (if my memory serves me correctly, that's her name), she was an ER nurse who swabbed me for COVID-19 as well as MRSA and something else. She kept me calm and said do not push her hand away or try to put my head back when she goes into swab my brain. I listened and all was good. Her and Ryan (maybe it was Edwin Pili???, sorry I don't remember the helpful fella in ER) but he too was kind. He's from the Aloha State sharing his aloha with all of the patients coming into the ER. Dr. Cunningham was the first doctor to assess me and give me a sense of calm. Then I met Dr. Fletcher who explained certain methods of treatment in case COVID- test came back positive- which it did, and then Dr. Hwang shared with me the results, the experimental treatment they can offer and whatever else options I had to choose from. Yes, I had options and Dr. Hwang made it clear to me that I could choose any or none at all. Dr. Hwang was so pleasant, so re-assuring and clearly his compassion exuded from him, and again, I knew I was in the right place to get treatment. Dr. Zweig, she was also refreshing and encouraging each time she came to check on me. I was safe. I was tended to around the clock and I was comfortable knowing that at this tiny hospital, tucked away in the neighborhood, they really have a successful attitude toward healing and patient wellness. They care. I thank each of you doctors, nurses and the entire crew for diligently working to keep me safe. From July 21st to July 29th, you worked together to heal me and forever grateful am I to each of you. The nurses, Kaylin, Dong, Gerry, Quang- all of the nursing staff were wonderful and very engaged in my healing. I witnessed them carefully don their PPE before entering my room, they stayed protected while in my room and then quickly removed their PPE so they can go and help the next patient. Nurse Kaylin even shared sparkling water with me because we talked about how we enjoy sparkling water without the sugars and she was so thoughtful, she brought me half a dozen of them so I can stay hydrated...super stellar!!! The level of sincere concern and the collective efforts of helping me heal, all that must be acknowledged and recognized by these miracle workers who put themselves on the front line to help others recover, recuperate and heal- on a daily basis. I'm not keeping my mouth quiet about College Medical Center, I'm telling California regulators, patient advocacy groups and anyone else interested in this hidden gem, I'm letting them know how AWESOME this team of dynamic and caring individuals operate...with compassion and true interest in healing!!! A million thanks to Dr's Cunningham, Fletcher, Hwang and Zweig. You are caring individuals and your attitude encourages everyone to heal and get better. You were also concerned with my husband and would check in to see his progress. I am thankful to report, he is out of ICU, and closer to being home with me so we can heal together!!! The nurses and doctors are working so hard at College Medical Center. I was just a patient there for 6 Days. The hospital may be old and can use some major updates that are only cosmetic. However, the professionalism and training they have going on is exceptional. Dr Fletcher, Dr Hwang whom is under Dr Fletcher are so fabulous. They all have such great bed side manners, I wish I knew all the names of the wonderful nurses. I can't say enough great things about the staff and great health service I received. My family member was recently transferred here during a 5150-72hr hold. The "psychiatrist" Dr. Mangasep automatically placed them on a 5250-14day hold without any type of re-evaluation. She doesn't visit everyday and if she does, she hardly speaks to the patients there. With no proper evaluations. They were given meds that only worsened their condition, meds to have you zombied out. She prescribes antidepressants without evaluating patients. Patients are supposed to be evaluated everyday, to monitor their improvements so they can be released before the 14-day hold expires. As others have mentioned, they greatly exaggerated their diagnosis and create diagnosis out of pure lies. Retrieving any type of information from the staff about your patient is a complete hassle. You receive so much contradicting information you're playing a guessing game of who is telling the truth and who is lying. Most Registered nurses there are arrogant and are bothered by any questions you ask. Even the social worker in change of your patient's case is difficult to reach. You have to literally dig out any type of information out of these people. Keep calling them over and over until you get the information you require. You must threaten this facility with a lawyer for them to take you seriously. This was the WORST medical treatment I've ever witnessed. I'm 100% certain their practices are unethical and illegal. Their facilities are old, dirty, and haven't been updated in decades. Patients here have worse living conditions than inmates in prison. These are the type of psych wards you see in horror movies. Then only honest people here are some of the nurse assistants and janitor staff. They're compassionate, and sympathetic and they know the people in charge are completely corrupted.. Unfortunately, they have no authority there. I urge anyone who has had a similar experience to file a complaint with the Medical Board of California. If they receive enough complaints they will make sure this place is investigated and bring justice to patients who can't defend themselves and are basically being held hostage legally. If you or a loved one is being held here, you DO have rights. Reach out to a LA County Patients Right's Advocate, arm yourself with knowledge. read more

Had a whole room to myself, the cook was mexican, everyone said they heard his music and also because i had chilaquiles that morning! I just had an over all experience. The nurses were amazing! I will never let anyone I know come here ! They moved a woman to the hall way , after a few test! The staff on the ER is more concern with the games than with the people that are sick. Mr. Hawaii is big here. And they like their haircuts! If we don't have a room by 10 , I am pulling Mary out and we are going to ST. Mary's . When I was finally "discharged", I was trying to get my paperwork and they just kept sending me back and forth around the hospital. Plus, this hospital is a scam. NEVER GO HERE. Update, they charged me over a grand in early 2022, and I ended up paying close to it and the insurance covered the rest. Now it's near July and they sent me a bill stating I owe $6,445.96. According to the statement, total charged were $11,109.00. (I was held against my will as hostage for 3 days, I'm guessing it's so they can rack up money on me). AGAIN, THIS PLACE IS A SCAM. He was not seen by any physician , or even taken his vital signs . Now College medical is billing him $580.50 for walking in and asking if they can admit him for detox . The ER is the worst! Horrible service, the employees there are horrible and have no ethics. As i came in to the hospital that only respectful and welcoming employee where the paramedics. As i was in the emergency room there was a white elderly male employee whom was very rude. I notified him that i was a diabetic type 1 and not feeling well and needed my medication (insulin) and he refused to allow my to tale my prescribed medication and yelled at that i was under a doctors care and was not able to take outside medication, when this is my prescribed medication by an actual doctor not physician assistant and the nurses are not qualified this nurse poked my arm like three times saying "there is no blood flowing". I thought my hip was dislocated, as there was a large protrusion sticking out of the area where I had had a hip replacement a while ago, called 911, and they told me that every other ER was full and closed to ambulances, so they were taking me to College Hospital, which I'd never heard of. Upon arrival, I was taken through cluttered, messy hallways, every corner crammed with people sitting unattended on gurneys. I was put in a room which had 2 beds. My first "roommate" was a quiet woman; when she left, she was replaced by an older, alcoholic man experiencing a manic episode, restrained to his bed, and loudly spewing an endless stream of profanity and nonsensical stories. I'll spare you the unappetizing details, but sanitation lapses caused me to decide that I would not allow them to perform any invasive procedures on me, and started texting friends in the medical field to see how I might get out. Everyone's response was, "What are you doing there? That's a mental and drug rehab hospital!" The staff argued with me that my only options were to be admitted and let them treat me, or to sign an AMA (against medical advice) form and walk out on my own (but I couldn't walk). Two friends finally arrived and took me to another hospital where I was treated. Never again! read more
