Wonderful people, wonderful bike shop. My hybrid Trek bike was braking rough, and something was rubbing. The owner promptly found the problem (derailer was rubbing), adjusted my tire pressures, then watched me ride to assess the brakes. He proceeded to make necessary adjustments. While I was waiting, I talked to him about bike seats and he explained the different styles and densities. I chose one that he immediately offered to switch out, then had me ride again to check seat height and position. My bike is MUCH more comfortable now and rides like new. Pricing was fair. Walked in with my Cannondale which I bought here years ago. Have not ridden as much as I used to but wanted a tune up on my bicycle. It has been a while, but I have been cycling for 30 years and have done a high number of rallies, races and criteriums. The employee (not sure if owner) just stared when I entered. I asked if they could do a tune up and he turned and walked away and said sure as if I was bothering him and then he said nothing. I told him if he could not do it I could go somewhere else. He then questioned me and asked how I knew the bike needed a tune up. He started listing issues that could be wrong. As an avid cyclist I decided at that point I was done and that I did not need to do business here. I picked up my bike and walked out but I did let him know that it was a bike I specifically purchased at colonels and had paid over $1200 back then. While I was putting my bike back in my vehicle he came out and asked if WE could start over. I told him he had his chance to take my business and that I did not need to do business there. He tried to tell me he needed to get the bike on the stand to see what it needed. I told him I was not asking for the service right then and there. I have shopped in many bicycle stores over 30 years and I know it is not like driving in to get an oil change and I knew Colonels was one of my favorites at one time. I had only recently gotten back into bicycling and recently found the shop after several years of not being able to engage in the sport. I am at a point in my life where I can start to get back to a sport I have loved for many years. However, that experience was ruined on this day at this bicycle shop. I have owned and operated stores myself and have never placed myself in a situation to ask a customer if WE could start over. I am a former elementary teacher and school principal and would never tolerate that behavior from myself or my staff. I am currently an HR Director and would definitely be coaching up this any employees engaging in that conduct. I took my bicycle to another great shop in River Oaks and was never questioned about what, I the customer did not know, but only that it would be checked out. I was happy walking into Colonels bicycles that day in June but left disrespected. I know many will continue to do business here but I must now remove the Colonels sticker from my bicycle. read more

Where do i even start! Gordon...you are amazing! i came in for a flat tire and Gordon assisted me yesterday while having small talk he pointed out things on my bike that i have paid no attention to, broken spokes, long chain etc. and he went above and beyond to assist me and make sure that i and my bike made it to my destination, which was Arlington, i am somewhat still an amateur cyclist and have been riding for years, ive had this bike in particular for over 6 years, even my front tire tread is the same age lol, but i normally ride an hour to and hour and a half, immediately when i got on my bike it felt like i have never felt it before, i ended up cycling over 75 miles yesterday! a first for me, i wouldn't have been able to do it without Gordon. thank you very much and after 36 years of passion i hope you have many more to come. read more

My impression is that Colonels is great if you're an avid biker, into high-end gear and passionate about all things two-wheeled and unmotorized. I recently went in with my beater of a mountain bike and my kid's bmx bike for various problems with brakes, chains and other deferred maintenance, and didn't have the greatest experience. They sized me up as a moron when it came to bike maintenance, which is accurate. We talked about their 'minimum' which was to give the bikes a tune up to the tune of $50 for my bike and $30 for my son's bike. It seemed steep for the work involved, but again, not my area of expertise. After 3 weeks (They were clear about the timeline on the front end, but this seems like a lot of time for two tune-ups, no?) we got the call to come get the bikes. $80 bucks later, I guess you could say they did the work as promised, but we're still having issues with the brakes on both bikes and they couldn't really explain what work was performed. Long story short, next time I'll know to take my bikes to somewhere less about Lance and the Tour and spandex shorts and more about rudimentary bike maintenance. That said, if you're into big time biking, this place seems to be the place to go, complete with an air superiority to round things off. read more

We called ahead to ask if they buy bicycles. Went in and finally were greeted by someone working on a bike. She informed us the person we spoke to went "across the street" will be right back. After about 30 minutes she said she would text him. Another 45 minutes later we asked if he was coming back ..that is when she said 'oh sorry I didnt realize he left for tge day' so some other person glanced at the bike and gave us a crazy low-ball offer much less than the blue book for bicycles even suggested. I broke my rear derailler hangar on my Salsa Vaya last Sat afternoon. It was my mistake as I over torqued it while putting the wheel assembly back in. I called Col's and they told me if they did not have the hangar they could grab one off a bike on the floor. They did this, adjusted my bike and got me going in 30mins for a nominal labor charge plus parts. I rode 15 miles that evening and am a Happy Colonel's customer. Awesome job. read more

I called Colonels Bicycles to see if they could adjust my brakes. I had purchased a new bike online and for safety sake, I wanted to ensure everything was operating properly. "Sure," I was told, "just bring it in tomorrow." The next day, I loaded the bike and drove to Colonels. They are near the Movie Tavern in a strip mall. First you have to find a parking space. Then you tote your bike up the stairs where you reach their door. There were three people working. As I struggled with the door trying to keep it open and pull my bike in, do you think anyone tried to help? No. At the service counter is an older gentlemen; probably in his 50s, wearing a grey shirt with his name on it. I mentioned that I called in the previous day and I was told to bring it by this day. "Sorry," I was told, "we've gotten at least ten bikes today and I don't think we could get to for at least a week and a half." I asked how long did brakes take to align? He replied that wasn't the point. They could find other issues. "Yes," I said, "but it is a new bike that has never been ridden." To this guy, it wasn't going to happen. His best offer was to leave the bike and they'd try to have it done in two weeks. Well, that wasn't going to work for me, so I told him I'd find another way. As I left, the employees watched me struggle with the door and with my bike as I left the building and traversed the steps to load the bike back in my car. In the parking lot, I called Trinity Bicycles. They said to bring it in. Two days later the bike was ready and they did a great job. I'll never recommend Colonels, but I will Trinity Bicycles. read more

I go to Colonel's Bicycles because the staff are very knowledgeable. They live and breathe bicycles. I have to say they definitely cater to a more-than-recreational bicyclist crowd. They've got a small space in the trendy So7 district, and most of the real estate is devoted to bicycle sales and service. (They know where their bread is buttered). They don't have a lot of accessories or clothes hanging around, but what they have is QUALITY stuff. Expect to pay for quality stuff. I've had my bike in to have some accessories installed and some anti-theft locks cut off. I did schedule my service ahead of time (not a big deal because the fenders had to be ordered anyways). As promised, when the fenders arrived, they called me and I brought my bike in. I dropped it off at lunch and I picked up the bike after work. They charged me $80 for the service, but Tommy (one of the techs) had to custom make a bracket, and saw the locks off and replace them with regular skewers. The tech was cool enough to roll my bike out and show me how the fenders went on and what I'd have to do to accommodate any other accessories. $80 was totally fair and totally worth it. Nathan helped me find a good helmet, recommended some luggage, and even steered me AWAY from buying a high-dollar wide-ass seat. He said, "Ride the seat you have for a while, if you hate it, then come back and buy this". How often does the sales guy tell you "Hey, you probably don't need that"? Rockin! I commute to and from work and log about 60+ miles a week on the bike. So for me, Colonels is right up my alley. read more

These guys are "old school", unassuming, full of knowledge and willing to go the extra mile to satisfy a customer. If it's not in the shop they will go out of their way to try and get it for you. As for Jeff B's review, one must understand that operating a bike-shop is very expensive and the profit margin on parts and bikes is very low. Properly servicing a bicycle doesn't come cheap. Think of the overhead, utilities, payroll etc... . Bike shops like this are becoming very rare for that exact reason. This is a great shop, one that is capable of adapting to the customer, be it a semi-pro, or a weekend recreational rider. I went in looking for a certain bike for my wife and went to Colonel's because they were a Salsa dealer. They didn't have the one I was looking for but went to the ends of the earth looking at local shops, online, thru the dealers network, etc. Top notch service even though they weren't probably going to make the sale because they didn't have the bike in stock. To the folks that complained they don't understand how bike shops work. Beater bikes are hard to fix period because they were never good brand new to begin with , and if you want top notch service buy the bike locally and support local shops, NOT ONLINE, and then have them fix it. The shop I worked at had a policy to not work on Walmart bikes to begin with. Repairs usually cost more than the bike itself. read more

As a beginning cyclist, I bought my first bike from Colonel's in 2001. I shopped around quite a bit, and the folks at Colonel's were not only more interested in helping me find the right bike, they also listened to my needs and suggested a less expensive bike than I planned on purchasing. As much as I like money in my pocket, I was more than willing to spend my extra dough on pedals, helmet, a pump, shoes, blowout bag, and I walked out with all of the above for less money than I would've dropped at another store, for a bike alone. I still have and use all of those things, except for the pump, which broke. Here comes the fun part: it had a lifetime warranty but had been discontinued. Colonel's, without asking any questions, replaced the pump with an equivalent model, even though they no longer carried that particular brand. Fast forward a few years of cycling under my belt, and I was ready to buy a bike for my wife. We visited Colonel's probably six times-it was the only store that actually measured my wife and was interested in finding a bike that fit.... And they were interested and attentive every time we visited, no matter how many customers were there. Sully (Randy) worked closely with me to build a bike, again, that met our needs and was within our budget. When our son came along in 2011, we decided to build the piece de resistance, a cargo bike for the whole family. We got suggestions and information from every single member in the shop, which was helpful because every single member in the shop rides bikes, every day. We were able to custom build our bike to our exact specifications, down to the spokes... And this is not a bike that requires spandex shorts of any kind, mind you! Not to mention, the staff accommodated our toddler on multiple occasions. The moral of this story is this: I've dealt with Colonel's as a novice and as an experienced rider. I've been a single guy on a budget, a married man looking to find the perfect gift for my wife, and now a parent who wants to enjoy time outdoors with my family. I've seen the shop full of customers, and there have been days when I was the lone shopper. Consistently, I received competent and professional service from these guys. This is the place any rider can buy any kind of bike, and I encourage anyone to give them a try. read more

My husband and I went in to this store last weekend (saturday), which I understand may be a busy day.... But, we experienced horrible customer service!!! Actually we received no customer service at all. First, as we were approaching the front door, we had to hold the door open for an employee who was leading another customer to show bikes that were outside. Neither of them acknowledged that we held the door open for them, including the employee! Once inside, we walked all around, looking at all of the bikes and products. We passed many employees (all with customers), but there was no acknowledgment that we were there and looking. I have worked in retail, it is okay to say, "Welcome, look around, we will be with you just as soon as we can!" At the very least, after walking around for 15 mins as if we were invisible, a simple "hello" would have been nice. We left and went to Oak Cliff Bicycles and received wonderful customer service and a fantastic bike! read more

I have never been to Colonel's since I do not live or work near the shop. However, I had a warranty issue with a frame(it developed a crack) and my regular bike shop no longer sold the brand. Colonel's was the near bike shop selling my brand. They went to bat for me and bent over backwards to get my frame swapped out for a new frame. My bike was over 10 yrs old and the frame warrantied for 5 years, but with the help of Colonel's and the bicycle manufacturer being nice to a long time customer, they sent a new and better frame at no cost. Colonel's even understood that I would have my regular bike shop switch my components over(more convenient for me). Thank-you Colonel's!! You guys are great. read more

I would highly recommend Colonel's Bicycles to anyone looking to purchase a quality bike and get quality service! We bought two Giant road bikes over the course of a weekend, along with cleats, petals, helmets, hitch rack, and other accessories. We were purchasing a car that weekend as well, and our sales associate at Colonel's, Sully, was more than gracious about dealing with how in and out we had to be with fittings and so on in order to finalize all our car stuff. Sully and one of the owners, Doug, even stayed late on a Saturday to help us install our bike rack on our new hitch and show us how to properly hold the bikes on it. Of course, we love our new bikes! But more importantly, we are extremely happy with the top notch attention that Sully and Doug gave to us in this process.
