They have your standard donuts - decent sized, and tasty enough but there's nothing imaginative or memorable about them .... except imagining why would you pay $13 for 6 when their fillings are measured in teaspoons and do not compare to Market Basket quality donuts, which are half the price. If you're contemplating Dunkin' Donuts and Colonial - I'd go with Colonial. But if you're heading up 138N, I'd go right by here and get the far superior MB donuts. read more

I know this is about a year too late, but Colonial Donut is back in Taunton, and I couldn't be happier. I grew up here, and even though I've been away for a while, coming back to this spot feels amazing. When it closed a couple of years ago, it felt like we lost a piece of Taunton, but the new owners brought it back in 2024 and absolutely nailed it. On my visit I tried a coffee roll, a plain old-fashioned donut, a chocolate old-fashioned, a blueberry old-fashioned, a honey-dipped glazed, and a bagel with cream cheese. Every single one was fantastic. The donuts were fresh, flavorful, and bigger than what you'll find at any chain. The bagel deserves its own mention: toasted before being served, with that perfect chewy texture and smooth cream cheese--it was exactly what a bagel should be. First off, thank you to the new owner for bringing back a local legend. Colonial makes the best old fashioned donuts I have ever had. The blueberry glazed is my favorite donut in the world. The flavor is fantastic and they are very generous with the glaze. I haven't tried any flavor here that I didn't enjoy. It took less than two minutes to place and receive my order. The staff was very friendly and clearly happy to be there. This shop is a time capsule. It's like stepping back into the 1950s. The decor is very basic, but exactly what I would expect from a restaurant of this era. If you want to know what donuts were like 70 years ago, this is the place to go. This place is incomparably rad. In fact, should I get pancaked by a dump truck on my way into work tomorrow, my final wish is to be interred at Colonial Do-Nuts. I spend a dangerously high percentage of my life in donut shops anyway, but only because that's where the donuts are. I certainly don't frequent them for the ambience. Probably because they invariably provide the most depressing retail experience this side of "undertaker" or "discount plastic surgeon." Long before you mosey into any independent New England donut joint, you know what you're going to get: Dirty beige walls and a thick crust of grease and leftover cigarette smoke on everything, up to and including the 87-year-old VFW rejects who are the only other customers. Colonial Do-Nuts is the one, glorious exception. It's like Willy Wonka's Donut Factory, only way less creepy. The brightly colored wall panels are awesome, the logo's some sort of hipster antique, and the gleaming, inviting counterspace is loaded with people who actually look stoked to be here. Standing behind huge piles of (stupendous) donuts, the staff are more than happy to shoot the breeze about rainfall and Red Sox while you spend waay too long deciding just to screw it and get one of each. And while you're hemming and hawing, dudes are bustling around in back, bringing out huge trays of fresh donuts and otherwise giving the general impression that you've stumbled into the world's only dough-based theme park. About thirteen seconds into my first stop at Colonial, I just wanted to stop everything, throw my arms in the air and spontaneously start raising the roof. Simply put, it's the first donut shop in the universe that's totally reflected the joy I feel when I'm eating a transcendant donut. And I've eaten a lot of those here. Their cake donuts don't quite have a perfect fry -- it's a little too much like a hard bake, with not quite enough grease to juice it up -- but they're fried so deep and thoroughly that it's impossible to complain. There's no wasted cake. Every square centimeter is pure, unadulterated donut. Start with the chocolate honey dip or the butternut, depending on how much of a sugar depth charge you're looking for that particular morning (butternut is lethal) and follow your heart from there.
