I've been coming to Colonial since I was little, and yes, I once was little. I grew up on Colonial which makes me like the doughy donuts a little more than places like Krispy Kreme. 24 hour donut plus, pretty clean facility, sort of nice staff, good donuts. They aren't a lot of 25 hour places in Oakland so you do what you need to. There's often times people playing chess at late hours of the night, I wish I was good enough to challenge them but they look serious. I recommend the Maple Old Fashioned. Nice local hangout spot when the bars close or you don't know what else to do. read more

They have an amazing assortment of donuts at this place that is constantly being replenished. There is always a line when I come here but it goes by fast and is totally worth it. The women always have a smile on their face and are efficient at what they do. One of my favorite places when I'm craving something sweet. This Colonial Donuts has been around for a long time. I used to come into this doughnut shop back in the mid-70's when one of my friend's husband worked here as a doughnut maker. I was tending to business across the street (AT&T store) that I decided to make a pit stop here to get a few doughnuts. It's been a while since I had doughnuts. I don't eat them too often, but my favorite is the glazed French crullers. I'm not much of a cake doughnut fan. I remember French crullers used to be 75 cents each; now they are $1.50 each. Even the cake doughnuts have gone up...50 cents each to $1.00 each. (Yeah, like 20 years ago they were reasonably priced.) Colonial's has a nice assortment of cake donuts (coconut, sprinkles, blueberry, devils' food, crumb, etc.), croissants, twists, maple bars, apple fritters and cookies. Cake doughnuts can be dry and heavy on my stomach, but the blueberry one was quite moist and tasty. I guess that's why some people dunk those donuts in coffee - soften the doughnut and sweeten the coffee. My husband likes crumb doughnuts, so I got him two. One glazed French cruller, one blueberry cake and two crumb cakes = $4.50. I will come back. I noticed they also sell lotto tickets...who knows maybe a change of venue to purchase lotto tickets might bring me luck. read more

I went head and bought an Apple fritter, a Coconut glazed, and a Red velvet old fashioned. I liked the Red velvet donut the most. The Coconut donut I picked was a gluten free one, and I wasn't a fan of that one. Apple fritter was ok but I'm a Apple fritter fan and it wasn't bad, but not spectacular either. I had a super friendly gal help me and everyone who was a customer there were regulars and knew everyone who worked there. It wasn't too oily but was just moist enough. The buttermilk glazed doughnut was also good. The real downfall of this shop was the service and the ambience. There was a long line, and it took a while even at the front of the like until anyone helped us out. The overall ambience of the shop doesn't make you want to stay and hangout. They don't deserve the one star My brother who no longer lives in the state and retired went to Colonial remembering his days as a teen almost eating his way through school out of Colonial donuts. We live in the Glen and he went in about 7:30ish. So nasty was the woman behind the counter and with no customer service manners or for that manner manners at all, he picked out his choices. As the woman stuffed the donuts gruffly into the bag he realized he had loose dollars bills in his shirt but needed more money for his choices and reached for his wallet that he left in the car. So nasty again was the woman when he asked her to remove two donuts because he couldn't pay. We have lived in Lakeshore neighborhood for more than 50 years and this business has changed hand many times but by far her service is beastly appalling and unprofessionally disagreeable. Who does THAT! Who is that ARROGANT?? I want people to know how one tasteless act can put pen to ink!!! Never will I or anyone in my network buy from Colonial ever again!!
