Green melon bun, passion fruit lime bun, okonomyaki danish
    Sophie C.

Cute little bakery with so much Asian cook books inside and cute little touches even from the pink pastry boxes. Def a bakery worth checking out okonomiyaki danish - 5/5 flavors on point and perfectly layered and flakey Passion fruit like bun- 5/5 super yummy and passion fruit tasted so good I don't usually like custard filling but this did not taste generic at all Lychee mochi - 5/5 truly tasted the lychee flavors and not overly sweet Taho - 3/5 prob doesn't beat the original taho at Filipino bakeries but if you're looking for something less sweet this may be the better alternative Honey due milk bun -3/5 loved the honey due taste on the crust but was not a huge fan of the custard

They have plenty of pastries here! We came after going to the new Alameda spot where they ran out of pastries because they are so delicious and they're just getting started there. I thought the savory bun, which was good at first, but later I wished I would've gotten something sweet instead. lol The people at the register were helpful. Not so pleasant, but they were busy. The café was clean with lots of lovely things to look at while we were in line. The line was pretty short so we got to get our Matchas and pastries pretty quick.

Bakesum pastries will fit your tasting needs whether it be sweet, slightly sweet or even savory. I went to the Oakland store on Grand Avenue and the counter person mentioned that they have a new shop on Park Street in Alameda. I have driven past the Alameda shop and the lines are very long while there was no line at noon on a Friday at the Oakland shop. Bought numerous items with the favorites being The Okonomiyaki Danish, Yuzu Meringue Bun and Leche Cream Bun. My Eval in order of likey: - Okonomiyaki Danish, if you like savory, get this, similar to Chinese Pork Sung Bun but with Bonito Flakes, Seaweed , Mayo, Furikake, on a crispy layered flaky Danish...my fav - Yuzu Meringue Bun, an ode to lemon meringue pie, complex combo, the yuzu is really tart and still sweet, bun is flaky, interior gooey, and the dessert is good if you like sweets, just a bit too sweet for me - Leche Flan Milk Bun, simple, not overly sweet, just enough milk cream filling and has a crunchy, exterior topping, tied for second, but simple creation compared to above two - Ube Milk Bun, same as above but I'm not a big fan of Ube this is last for me. If I had to pick one, I'd go with the first one. Not cheap pastries but worth the splurge on occasion.

First time visiting this bakery, and I was very impressed! Although we only try a few their pastries, but they are all unique is full of flavors. Enjoyed the black sesame and coconut ube cookies, and thought they did a good job bringing the flavor of okonomiyaki to the pastry too. Will have to try the other ones next time as some were sold out. As you can see in the picture the store has a soft and comfortable color theme and ambiance. We will come visit again soon!

Teeny tiny shop with only 2 small tables out front (sidewalk seating). I walked in around 9:30am on a Saturday morning and there was a small line (10ish people). Parking isn't great here, especially on Saturday morning since there is a farmers market down the street. I was able to find parking in a lot in front of CorePower Yoga. I am never in this area so ordered more than I should since it's not the easiest to get to. Ordered the Okonomiyaki Danish (2), Green Onion Croissant, Yuzu Meringue Bun, Croisubi and a Matcha Latte with a cream top (forgot the name but some sort of coconut flavor). Out of all the pastries I ordered, the Okonomiyaki Danish was my favorite and will 100% reorder whenever I find myself in this area. The flavors, filling, uniqueness - everything about this was delicious. The other pastries were good but I was slightly disappointed with the Croisubi which is their version of a ham & cheese croissant but made with Spam. I might be wrong but the Spam didn't taste like actual Spam but one of those Spam subsitutes. It wasn't bad by any means, but I was expecting the distinctive and salty taste of Spam. The pastries were all really good but I do not recommend the matcha latte for individuals who like their drinks slightly sweeter. They use a decent matcha powder but even after adding the extra cream top, my overall latte was 5% sweet. Not sure how when cream tops usually balance out the matcha taste with a bit of sweetness. But for some reason, the cream top here had barely any sweetness so keep that in mind if you order the matcha latte. I actually saw a guy who ordered a matcha latte before me come back inside the bakery to ask why it had no sweetness.

I got the latte and added pandan cream on top. It was good. Flavor of pandan could have been stronger but good. The chocolate banana croissant was SO GOOD. I wish it had a tad more banana but it was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!!!! Staff are super nice! Long line but it goes by fast. Only like two small tables outside so not really a place to sit and chat - more like grab and go. The cashier told me they recently opened another cafe in Alameda, one with a parking lot. Thank goodness! Because parking was terrible!!

I've tried going to bake sum on like three different occasions, but always gave up because I couldn't find parking lol well we finally made it in a few weeks ago and it def lived up to the hype! I loveeee flaky savory pastries so the okonomiyaki danish and the croissubi were right up my alley. My fave was hands down the okonomiyaki danish. The flavors blended together sooo well and the puff pastry on the outside complemented it so well. I reheated it in the air fryer when I got home, and it was perfection. The croissubi was also good but I think I just don't like the flavor of seaweed and spam together that much lol I get that that's exactly what a spam musubi is, so that's a me issue. Maybe it would have been better if there was more spam. Then we also got a jasmine and honeydew milk bun because I also love cream filled pastries. Surprisingly, I actually liked the honeydew more than the jasmine, even though I'm normally more into tea flavors and don't particularly enjoy the flavor of honeydew. But this one was fragrant and not too overpowering or artificial tasting. Overall rlly nice. I also love that the shop sells art from local creators and small batch goods! I was able to pick up some hey doh silky soy sauce, which was really nice and better than I expected!

After drooling after these fun, creative ideas online for a while, I was happy I finally got to try Bake Sum! They switch up the menu every month, so it's fun to see what creative ideas with Asian flair they come up with next! ** Strawberry kinako croissant (4/5): cute croissant muffin shape with a soybean powder cream filling topped with a few strawberry slices. It was a very straightforward soy flavor without any discernible strawberry flavor. I'm a fan of that soy flavor, so it paired well with the sugary croissant bread (which was nicely laminated and textured)! Wonder if it would taste better with more strawberry flavor? :) ** Croissubi (4.5/5): this one is one of their signature pastries. I didn't try this one but MT really enjoy this and gobbled it all down! He said it wasn't as salty as a traditional spam masubi and really enjoyed it. ** chocolate banana croissant (3.5/5): I'm biased as I'm not a huge banana fan and this one was stronnnnng on the banana flavor. The topping/filling is also on the runny side so it's a messy treat! The croissant bread portion wasn't very light and airy but the heartier texture probably worked better with the liquidy filling. I can see banana lovers really enjoying this one though! ** mochi bites (2/5): tried the brown butter and the black sesame-- the first one didn't taste like anything and the black sesame was fragrant but not sweet enough for me. They might have tasted better warmed up though? ** black sesame snickerdoodle cookie (3.5/5): crunchy crispy edges with a softer, chewier but still slightly cakey interior. It had the fragrance of black sesame but mostly tasted like a sugar cookie instead of a snickerdoodle (I'm a cinnamon lover so really missed the cinnamon on this!). ** cocobae cookie (4/5): coconut and ube! Definitely fragrant and flavorful with both the coconut and ube flavors. The texture was also crunchy/crispy on the edges and softer/slightly chewy/slightly cakey in the middle. Not my favorite texture but this had a better flavor profile than the black sesame cookie in my opinion. Service was pleasant and straightforward. There are some cute stationery, pins, cookbooks, etc. to browse too. No inside seating, but there are a few tables outside to enjoy your treats. I'm happy that I checked out this super cute shop, and although I probably won't be back in a while (I'm from out of town), it's worth checking out if you're in the area!

First, I want to give special recognition to the okonomiyaki danish. The creativity of this pastry truly surpassed my expectations. I was especially impressed by the distinct layers of flaky, buttery dough. The flavors were spot on, highlighting the signature cabbage along with a rich brown glaze and mayo that perfectly captured the essence of okonomiyaki. Another standout was the milk conchas. My favorite was the strawberry--it was exceptional. The concha shape and texture were beautifully executed, and the addition of luscious cream made it even more indulgent. I'm still thinking about how delicious that strawberry one was.

Pastries with an Asian twist and flavor. The later in the morning, the lesser their inventory and the longer the line. Seems the coffees are the most popular although I did not try.

The puff pastry/croissant dough is super flaky buttery, crispy and perfectly cooked. It's a super small operation, seems like there are only two people manning the front. If you order a drink, it will take them a little bit, be prepared to sit down outside or read one of their many lovely Asian influenced cookbooks. This also means drink order slow down the service in general and do create a bit of a line. Overall, they work quickly and politely and are happy to discuss the pastries. I ended up buying a Filipino American cookbook as a gift for my wife.

Adorably curated selection of greeting cards, books, and tchotchkes
    Jen L.

The line looks intimidating, but it moves pretty fast, and they make the interior cute so you're not bored while you're in line. I love that they have a variety of both sweet and savory pastries. Of particular standout were the gochujang pull-apart bread and the spam crossubi - a very interesting take on spam musubis that I loved so much, I stood in line a second time to buy two of them. I also love their sweets. I thought that their almond cake was velvety and delightful, and I loved indulging in the matcha ice with the sea salt cream top. I was so full I wasn't able to sample the passion fruit lime cruffin; it's sitting in my fridge right now and I can't wait to dig in as a treat later. Really lovely!

01/17/26 Another successful delicious trip to Bake Sum! How do they come up with the ideas for these insanely delicious pastries! Here's Joyce, the brains behind the magic. She doesn't claim all the glory. She said it's a team effort... but we know it takes leader with a vision The Vietnamese Coffee Milk bun is oh so delicious!....delicate milk bread filled with a rich Vietnamese coffee cream... not sweet but just right! The lilikoi tart is perfect with the crispy shortbread like crust and tangy filling... croissants are always perfect. I still didn't try the yuzu meringue bun but Im confident it's another winner!

Is there anything that's milk free? Egg is okay.

Hey Amber - we do have a milk free mooncake currently on the menu. thanks and let us know if you need anything further!

Hi, do you offer substitution for the Bake Sum Box?

We offer substitutions for allergies. Thanks!

My loved one has a severe allergy to peanuts. Do you use peanuts/peanut products in your bakery?

We do not bake with any peanuts in our kitchen. I do want to mention that we do have almonds in many of our products.

Is there anything that's gluten free?

Hi John - All our mochi bites are gluten free and Lola Zenny's Leche Flan is also gluten free, but we don't currently have the Flan on the menu currently. We hope to offer more gluten free items in the future!

    Has anyone tried their cookies?

I tried the black sesame snickerdoodle! I heard other cookie flavors are crunchier but this one was chewy and of course, very nutty. It's huge so it will fill you up/ share with someone!

Overall, it's been a good experience every time. Parking can be challenging depending on the time of day. Most of the parking is on the street, so you'll need to keep an eye out for pedestrians and bicyclists while looking for a spot. That's probably the biggest inconvenience of visiting this place. There is usually a 15 to 20-minute wait whenever we come for dessert, but we've always been seated within the quoted wait time, which we appreciate. The restaurant itself is fairly small, so the dining area can feel crowded. Tables are very close together, and you're practically sitting back-to-back with other guests. Because of this, the noise level can get pretty high, and it's easy to overhear conversations from nearby tables. The desserts are the highlight here. The BingSu is excellent, and the lava cake is one of our favorites. The menu is accessed through a QR code, making ordering simple and convenient. Food portions are decent, although prices are definitely on the premium side. Service is efficient, and the food and desserts usually arrive pretty quickly. We used to go to their city location regularly, but over the years we've found ourselves visiting this location more often because the area feels more comfortable and convenient for us. That has made this our go-to spot whenever we're craving dessert. Overall, this is a great place for dessert. The quality of the desserts keeps us coming back, but the difficult parking situation and cramped seating prevent it from being a full 5-star experience. Would definitely return for the BingSu and lava cake.

I originally came in for Dubai inspired chocolate pistachio cheesecake but was instead greeted so warmly by head pastry chef Nile! She is full of life and so passionate about her baked goods. I almost wanted to buy one of everything after hearing about each item. Desserts: *Blueberry Ube Cheesecake *Pistachio Ricotta Cake *Dubai Pistachio Chocolate Cake with Biscoff Cookie Butter *Red Velvet Cheesecake Cup Nile just baked the Dubai cake and mentioned she would have a slice for herself that night. It was sweet and decadent for sure. Definitely perfect for sharing! I loved the blueberry ube cheesecake and so did Mom! I was looking for my leftovers and they disappeared from the fridge. Creamy and slightly fruity with that thick buttery crust-- amazing! Pistachio Ricotta cake was light and moist. Perfect when you want something delicately sweetened for tea time. Red Velvet cheesecake cup was just ok for me due to the cheesecake frosting. I think I would've preferred a whole slice of cake instead. This bakery kiosk is a part of Turkish-Mediterranean restaurant Moussaka. Interior has the cutest cafe tables and chairs. Love the grey with baby pink + mint green color scheme. Step inside and go directly to the dessert display to place an order. They're also on DoorDash. Can't wait to see what Chef Nile comes up with next!
