Colonial Donuts is a no frills donut place open 24/7 (even during COVID! but takeout only) which means no matter when you choose to have your emotional crisis or mental breakdown, this place will always be here for you. Their donuts are always super affordable and fresh. I've come in at 2am before and there are employees in the back frying donuts! Most old-fashioned donuts are $1.30 to $1.80 each I believe, while fancier donuts and pastries -- including muffins, bagels, cinnamon rolls, etc. -- are about $2.30 each. You can buy a cinnamon roll the size of your face for $2.30; how amazing is that???? I've never seen this place dead. Even on a Monday night during a pandemic, there was at least 3 other people waiting in line (6 ft apart with makes on) for donuts, which is testament to how much of local cult-favorite this place is. Pros: - Affordable!! I came here with my friends on a Friday night around 10:30 PM. We walked out into the store and there was a lot of people in there playing chess. The inside is quite spacious - a back door that leads into a parking lot. No bathrooms are on the premise. The only employee was an older gentleman. They take card but have a minimum. They also sell donuts that seem to be older in plastic bags. A little paradoxal when you walk into the place - it seems quite contradictory to the outside street. Donuts are about 1.75 for specialty ones. Maybe because I got them at 10:30 the donuts didn't seem as light and fluffy. Overall not a bad place to visit for a quick doughnut fix. read more

The best perk that attracted me about this particular donut shop is that it's open 24/7! Not only are they open 24/7, but their high-quality donuts and friendly staff for sure brought me to make a special space in my heart for this place! I ordered my favorite, the plain old cake donut. I go crazy whenever I have a cake donut because they're just so good, but when I ate their plain cake donut I went berserk! This cake donut was slightly crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside, giving it a perfect balance of textures. Since it was so light, it didn't leave me feeling so heavy like other cake donuts which can sometimes be quite dense. Colonial Donuts has been serving up fresh doughnuts for my entire life, and has been THE place for my family to get doughnuts for generations, as they opened in 1970 (or according to one man that worked there maybe even earlier). As long as I can remember they have also been open 24/7, turning out the fresh doughnuts at night, usually starting around 8:00-8:30pm. They do batches throughout the night. I've learned that my favorite doughnuts, the buttermilk and the old fashioned doughnuts come out first right around 8:30, so when I'm craving doughnuts I like to time it so they're still warm! The people who work there are very nice and you can also always ask them to guide you to the freshest doughnuts! There's nothing like a warm fresh doughnut. They have all the classic doughnuts, raised, cake, old fashioned, and filled doughnuts! I always like to get a variety, but particularly love their buttermilk or old fashioned doughnuts with maple glaze and some weird artificial yet delicious tasting strawberry shortcake and blueberry cake doughnuts! Sadly, this place has steered me away from my diet and workouts Regiment! I now go here Monday through Friday mornings to pick up their amazing hazelnut coffee and ube' crumb doughnut. They have a great variety but their specialty donuts are amazing! The red velvet, Oreo cookie, and crumb ones are delish!!!!! Open 24/7, Colonial Donuts is my go-to place for late night donut cravings. Depending on the time of day/night, the donuts either look really good or really sad. They would easily be 4 stars if there was some consistency. My go-to's are their raised glazed and maple bar. I've gotten a sad looking maple bar before (for some reason, they don't glaze them all the way). They were packed on National Donut Day, and we were able to snag some fresh glazed & blueberry donuts. Their donuts are on the denser/breadier side, which be a hit or miss for some people. They sometimes also fail to glaze their donuts all the way. I got a bag of donut holes and felt like I was eating dry fried dough instead of nice and fluffy donut holes. They also have a few other locations, but this seems to be the main one where all the goodies are made. Overall, a solid choice for late night donuts in the Oakland area, but probably wouldn't be my first choice during the day time. read more

We pulled up front to park on the street. Upon entering, the smell was awesome and inviting. The glass case of doughnuts had limited choices for 11pm but still offered great options such as varieties of cake, fronted, sprinkled and specialty donuts. I tried the glaze, it was really good. The donuts are made FRESH all day. I'm a doctoral student who moved up here from LA, and there are no donuts like this anywhere I live. I'm usually up LATE studying..I went at midnight, and the owner had trays full of fresh donuts. I asked him which were his most popular, and I ended up with an Ube and Red Velvet Crumble donut and an apple fritter....they did NOT dissapoint. It was love at first bite! I still vividly remember being out past 10 p.m. many, many, many, many years ago, being hungry and Colonial Donuts was right there. Ordered the raised glazed, took one bite and said to myself, "Where have you been all my life?!" The dough is so fluffy, like soft pillows. Idk what it is but those sprinkles make it taste better. 2. Pumpkin Spice cake donut holes and donuts are amazing. It's a seasonal one. I debated in my head if I wanted these or a glaze. So glad I tried these. It's delicious. I wish it was a permanent flavor. 3.
