Considering I go to Stamford, CT at least once a month for the past year I finally tried the "bar pie" pizza at Colony Grill. What is a bar pie? Extremely thin crust, smaller in diameter than a regular pizza and not alot of cheese or sauce and created to hold in one hand and fit a pizza tray on the narrow bar counters. Think personal pie. Of course I had to try their famous pepper infused "hot oil" as a topping along with mushrooms and sausage. Is the hot oil up to all the hype? Eh I don't know if I would order it as a topping. Did not know about hot oil on pizza until now. Don't judge it until you try it! Pizza took about 20-25 minutes to make on a Saturday evening so be sure to call ahead if you pick up. The crust is SO SO thin and crispy!! And the toppings go almost all the way to the edge which is great for someone like me who doesn't care for too much plain pizza crust. Everything about the pizza was perfect. The hot oil was delicious but didn't feel overly greasy with the cheese and pepperoni. Perfect cheese to crust to sauce ratio. Stopped by for dinner yesterday. Just a heads-up you have to use the right door to get in - but they offer indoor seating or seating out back. We sat out back on a picnic table in the corner. Ordered some rosé and a couple jack and cokes along with a pie with hot oil, stingers and anchovies (was mine - YUM!) and my bf got a mushroom and onion as he's vegetarian. A visit to Stamford is incomplete without eating this Stamford special hot oil pizza. Got the one with bacon, and onion toppings but unfortunately the two people who took our order completely forgot about for a good twenty minutes and only when we asked them again did they apologize and start making our order. It wasn't even that busy, but I guess mistakes happen. Everything was forgotten when the food arrived cos the taste definitely made it worth the wait. Thin, crunchy crust, just the right amount of cheese coupled with the love of my life - bacon...it's a gastronomical delight one should definitely experience. I love NY pizza cos I'm obviously biased but you can come hungry on Saturday morning and finish this whole pizza, all 6 uneven slices of it. But being the greedy little Gollum that I am, I took it back with me to NJ on the train. I live in NJ and I crave this pizza. "When I go to Connecticut" lol or just feel like getting some thin crust pizza. I always get some pizza from the colony grill. There are few spots and they all have the same quality pizza with delicious toppings. I have only gotten the bacon or sausage. And they are both delicious. And for $12 a pie with a topping I'm usually ordering two or more anyway. And eat a whole pie on the way home...calm down, remember it's thin crust lol. Don't even think about stopping to one of their locations. And order more then one bc you will be eating a whole pie by yourself. It's that good. You will thank me later. It's worth the trip. Sorry but this seems to be a love it or hate it place and I am certainly in camp hate it. Let me start with a positive ... the atmosphere here is great. Lots of locals, the waitstaff is not rude (though maybe a bit on the cold side, truth be told) and it has a great dive bar vibe with lots of aged wood, photos of regulars on the walls and a comfy vibe. Even the music selection was good. If I was rating this place purely on being a dive bar, it would get 4 stars easily. Which brings me to why only 2 stars. I'd give the pizza zero stars if I could. It was hands down the worst pizza I have been served at a restaurant. That says a lot because I put pizza in the same category as blowjobs. Even when it's bad, it's pretty good for the most part. For me to hate a pizza takes a lot. I am no stranger to different types of pizza ... give me Long Island pizza, Boston pizza, LA pizza, coal fired, wood oven, bbq, Sicillian square, chicago deep dish ... I usually like it all. Bar pizza is not new to me ... cracker crisp thin crust with a light layer of sauce and cheese. I'm good with that. This pizza was just bland and blah ... not only was it bland and gross, it actually seemed like a black hole of flavor. After one bite, I knew it needed help so I dumped shredded parmesan cheese on it to no avail. I did something I've done only twice before and salted the pizza ... still bland. I got the cheese pie with hot oil for $1.50 more. Maybe the oil absorbed all the flavor because this was like eating cardboard. The only flavor which came out was a bad one ... the crust tasted like burned popcorn. It made me wonder if some kind of ground corn flour was being used because of this popcorn taste. I was told it was 'standard wheat flower' ... I still have no explanation as to how the dough ended up tasting like popcorn. One other reviewer compared it to Elios. I disagree ... Elio's at least has some flavor. I actually would prefer Elios to this, which I cannot believe I am saying. The Colony pizza comes in one size which I'd call a medium sized pie at mosy other places. Its $10 for a plain cheese and you add $1.50 per topping. (Hot oil is considered a $1.50 topping.) Beers are $5-$7 so a shared pizza with two beers would set two people back about $35 with tip. Too much for what you get. I really hoped I'd like this place but it was just the worst pizza I've had in my opinion. CT has so many great pizza spots, I don't know how this possibly winds up on so many favorite lists. Maybe, like White Castle, it's something you need to be drunk to enjoy. I don't enjoy writing this review because I am sure they are doing something right to have been around (and crowded!) for 70 years. But it just wasn't my thing and I want to warn folks what they might be in for in case they are expecting great pizza. Come for the bar and skip the pizza. read more

5-star for me - as it's pizza like no other place I've had, and it was outstanding. I ordered with "hot oil" and bacon. Thin crust - I was able to eat the entire pie on my own. Washed it down with cold beer. Staff was also very attentive and pleasant. Our orders came out quickly despite all tables being full. I was on a road-trip from DC to Boston and this was my only planned food stop. So after 5 hours of driving, I was pretty hungry and couldn't wait to try a Colony Grill bar pie for the first time! When the pizza showed up, it was actually larger than I thought - a nice surprise - and my first bite could be best described as "crunchy and chewy". Historically speaking, I've typically described an amazing pizza crust as being "perfectly crispy and chewy", so this Colony Grill bar pie threw me for a loop. The underlying crust is even stiffer than I expected it to be. Overall, it's delicious! The Hot Oil topping is really oily - it will run down your chin if you're not careful - and I'm not convinced that it is as necessary of a topping as all of the locals say it is. You do get a bonus Stinger (hot pepper) in the middle of your pizza if you order the Hot Oil topping, which is cool. But I think I would've been just as happy with crushed red pepper flakes and grated cheese. (I always unscrew the tops and dump a heap of each on my plate prior to grabbing a slice.) Interestingly, when I ordered half sausage and half mushroom (see uploaded pic), I received a full order of sausage all on one half, and a full order of mushrooms on the other. You will be charged for 2 full toppings, but the way they distribute them makes it fair. This famous bar pie is delicious in it's own way, but would I call it the best pizza in America like many chefs and critics have proclaimed it? I tried this out for the first and last time recently. It wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't really good. There is no menu, really. They make pizza and they have a dozen or so toppings to choose from. Or a salad pizza. Those are the food choices. And they have a full bar. If a restaurant only does one thing, such as pizza, they should be experts at it. There's no excuse not to be. But the pizza had way too much moisture in it. The crust and the whole thing was just soggy, which means to me that they're not prepping their toppings correctly. The whole experience was pretty bland, from the indifferent service to the no-frills dining experience (napkin dispensers on the table, for example, typical of a neighborhood pizzeria but not a restaurant) The building is nice inside and out. It is brick, I assume a repurposed ex-industrial building of some kind. It has a large dining room with high ceilings and cozy colors. There is a nice outdoor deck on the river as well. read more

My bff, Pots & Pans, and I visited the Norwalk location last fall, and rated it 5 star. We were in the area today (after just having two dogs each at Joey B's), and decided to visit the original location in Stamford. Ample parking. We arrived just after it opened at 11:30 and were seemingly the first customers. We were greeted and seated by Melysa. I could write an entire review just on her (10 stars), but suffice to say Melysa is affable, unflappable, more than capable, and just plain able. We each ordered a personal, 6-slice, pie. I added hot oil (infused), sausage, and meatball; Pots & Pans ordered his w ho, sausage, and black olives. We each ordered pint drafts and shots of Jameson... hey, you only live once (and thanks to my nephew, Joey, for the generous gift card). The pizza was, once again, outstanding. Definitely thin crust, slightly charred on the bottom, and generously topped. We both liked the pie better at this location than Norwalk, but just by a smidgeon. As mentioned in my last review of Norwalk Colony Grill, they were rated #43 in the ENTIRE COUNTRY by The Daily Meal. If you like thin crust, this is a unique place. And get it w hot oil. Definitely worth it. And oh, btw, they probably sold about 20 pies to go while we were there. One last note, P & P did NOT use a knife and fork even though it pained him not to. Nobody compares when it comes to bar style pizza. I can down a cheese pizza easily all by myself (unfortunately, considering the calories!).

We went to this place on the way back from a pizza tour in New Haven, so we originally were going to skip it (we had our fill in New Haven) but decided the pizza was different enough it was worth the stop. And it delivered. We had the hot oil pie and it was delicious. The crust is the perfect bar pie crust, the cheese was perfectly cooked, and the hot oil added to the flavor. My first impression of Colony, this pizza staple in Fairfield County, was from friends who were obsessed. In fact, since then, any time Colony was mentioned, it was with this inexplicable infatuation with this place. Hot oil? WTF Mate? Well, maybe it's the nostalgia from people who have been eating this pizza since they were a kid. Maybe it's because their pizza is somewhat unique (Riko's is similar) as far as what you expect nearby. Whatever the reason, there is a cult following with Colony that I just can't get behind. Maybe it's the fact that their menu is just pizza, no salad, no nothing else. Fine, you have something people love, why add the complication of more choices. But their pizza is just okay. It's too thin, too much cheese, and just lacking in what I want in a good pizza, which is more sauce, less cheese, and better quality all around. I want brick oven, mozzarella, chewy dough. Their quantity of meatballs is lacking, and the quality is ok. The amount of bacon was decent. I know the pitchforks might come out because of this review, and I don't intend to insult those who have come to call this place home, but I will never be a fan when people think this is the best pizza around. Went there because we had heard that the hot oil thin crust pizza we liked so much at a competitor restaurant originated here. We ordered that pizza, plus a salad pizza, and a meat pizza. Bottom line, it may have originated here but the competitor makes it better - at least to our palate. The salad pizza was sloppy and coarse, the meat pizza was greasy (cheap meats?) and the hot oil was good but not exceptional. So we went back to the competition. COVID-19 era review: in case you just got here, this is pizza, not a bar and grill, and you'll only hear the word "pie..." and it is indeed the finest pie in the world. Colony pies are thinner than New York and New Haven style, and sturdy without being tough. Years ago this was a dark spot with velvet clown painting in the dining room and military/fire/police in the barroom. Today it's the same dark interior but with new lighting, and presently, plexi dividers between booths. Salad pizza joined the menu years ago, if that's your thing, but I'm sticking with stingers, onion, sausage, meatball, or plain cheese, all of which are awesome. Hot oil and stingers? Whoa! Being a takeout order, or order was ready exactly when we were told, and the masked staff were friendly as always. Parking isn't awesome, but is much bigger than it used to be, and thankfully cash-only went with the velvet clowns.
