They were apparently the best lobster ever tasted. The chef said southern Australia cold water lobster. Sweet and supposedly so good it didn't need the drawn butter. I don't eat lobster but i trust that input because shes eaten alot of lobster from various restaurants. If i have one bad thing to say its that they could use some sound absorption panels. The walls, ceiling, and windows are all hard surfaces that reflect sound. I believe some decorative sound absorption panels on the ceiling would reduce noise level without hurting the ambiance of the restaurant read more

Haven't been here for years and was super pleased with our experience overall. Food portions are very generous, the menu has so many options and the quality of the food was great. Our server was fun, casual and accommodating. We enjoyed drinks, appetizers, four entrees (which come with soup and salad!) and dessert which had candles added for our birthday celebrations! 5 out of 5! We had a birthday dinner at this vintage supper club. We drove out from Kenosha and it was worth it. It is actually a very easy drive. They offer plenty of parking too. Walking in, the place was crazy busy. The staff were so gracious and welcoming. They seated us at a beautiful table right by the window. The warm lighting, varnished wood and fireplace created a perfect setting. Our server Kris was incredible. She was friendly and offered warm and personable service. Although she was busy, it didn't show at all. We ordered various steaks and they were prepared perfectly. The dinner comes with so much - soup, salad, bread and a relish tray and that's fantastic. Kris brought out birthday Creme Brûlée with a candle for our birthday girl. It was a nice touch and tasted great. This was my first visit. This review is a from a few weeks ago. My husband wanted to go to a supper club for his birthday, so I made reservations at Colony House. When I made the reservation, I spoke with Karen and told her this was a birthday celebration and wanted a special celebration. When we arrived, I did see the note next to our name in the reservation book. We were seated and there was no mention. We were seated by a large group , and it was impossible to have a conversation, since we could not hear each other. May reviews stated it was loud, but I never experienced this level of loudness in a restaurant. Service was good, but very slow, to the point it was not enjoyable. Food was very good, we stared with the shrimp de jonghe. It was filled with shrimp, butter, and garlic...very good! We had prime rib, T-bone with shrimp and mushrooms and chicken piccata. All of entrees were companied with soup and salad, and a side - either potato or vegetables. The food was well prepared and we all took home left overs. Cocktails were well made and very reasonably priced. They never did acknowledge the birthday and we were so frustrated with the noise I did no ask. It is unfortunate, since the food is excellent, but the service and loudness negatively impacted the experience. Not sure if we would return. read more

The one that started it all... Colony House was my first review ever on Yelp (January 2015). Since then, I've posted over 300 reviews on Yelp. And I can honestly say, a very small portion of those restaurants are as good as Colony House! Over the years we've had many of their offerings and we've never been disappointed. Some of our favorites include: Chicken De Johghe, BBQ Ribs, Veal Parmigiana, Chicken Piccata, and any of their steaks! Dinner comes with soup, salad, and fresh baked bread! I recommend the warm spinach salad, it is awesome! Service is always top notch. Colony House has a great reputation. They always have a good crowd so you should definitely make reservations. We started at the bar having a drink with our party of 4 for my girlfriend s birthday , as for our drink our bartenders were great. and very knowledgeable . My chicken Oscar it was very tough. I couldn't cut it. I sent it back they cooked me a new piece. It came back not as tough but still tough but pure water all over the plate. I couldn't eat it. It was water logged. I didn't eat it I brought it to the manager and showed her she said it was from the chicken juices. It wasn't. beware of eating any chicken dishes. I gave my plate to the manager and left. We did pay for it but will not be back after traveling almost 1 hour as we use to come many years ago and it was great.Not worth the drive and not worth the food, money or management..So beware before going!. read more

My parents go here every Friday night and I decided to join right before the holidays! I'm vegetarian so the menu is pretty light on entree options. I ended up getting artichoke dip, a salad and onion rings! The artichoke dip was fantastic, the salad was pretty basic and small and the onion rings were yummy! Honestly the artichoke dip was one of the best I've ever had. Five stars for that dip. The only reason I rated it a four is because I think they should add another vegetarian entree option! We travel for over an hour from Chicago to enjoy the duck at the Colony House. BUT discovered that duck is no longer on the menu. New owners have made many other changes mostly on the down side with regard to pricing and value. Relish tray no longer has the large cheese ball just carrots and pickles with a tiny pate. Spinach salad now extra. Twice baked now half the size. Prime rib was not rare as ordered and was cut from the chuck end with no large pink center. It took the boss's intervention to get another piece from the chef and it was about the same. On the upside, the supper club atmosphere is still great and the people are friendly. Service can be slow when there are large tables and the noise level can be quite high. read more

My parents treated us to dinner at Colony House for our anniversary, as it has always been one of their favorite special dinner spots and it did not disappoint. We made reservations for right when they opened to beat the crowds; service and ambiance was fantastic. It is a relatively small place but they spaced the tables out well and the noise level was minimal so we could enjoy conversation. We started with the baked escargot appetizer which was another first for us; it was delicious. They also bring our fresh baked bread. All entrees come with soup, salad and starch choice, which we're all good. I opted for the steak Diane, which was cooked perfectly and the bernaise sauce was great. My mom and husband had the beef Wellington which was one of the daily specials. Both enjoyed it but said the liver pate was too much and made the pastry a little soggy. My dad had chicken dinner and my daughter got the kids prime rib, which was huge! Everyone enjoyed their meals very much. Normally we can't eat that much food but the portion sizes were perfect and everyone opted for desert as well; crème brûlée, chocolate cake, chocolate lava cake and a chocolate mousse. Oh how we love this place! My favorite thing about it is well..everything! Haven't had a bad experience ever. The escargot is so good we have to get our own to indulge. The wine selection is decent however, definitely more than 100% markup on that. The staff though is wonderful and the food delicious. We'll see you again very soon! read more

We just returned home from what used to be one of our favorite restaurants to go to, Colony House Restaurant in Trevor, Wisconsin. I had the Fish and Chips, and my husband had the Chicken Dijon. Several things have gone downhill since our last visit here. The fish and chips consisted of a soggy piece of salty breaded fish; it seemed like it had been sitting and warmed up prior to being served. It also came with three small smashed "fried" potatoes that weren't even crispy. The chicken Dijon was extremely dry and very salty. In the past, the salads that came with the meal were visually appealing and appetizing. The salad they serve tonight was basically flat in the sense that they have become very skimpy with the salad. The only saving grace for tonight's meal was the cup of potato soup that was pretty good, and that the servers were attentive as always. The real kicker is that all the prices have gone up anywhere from $3 to $8 on the entire menu, with most of the menu items leaning towards the higher price increase. The prices they show on their website do not match the prices on the menus we were provided. (See attached photos.) Also, the restaurant was way too noisy which made it difficult to visit with the friends we were with. Apparently, new management took over on October 1. Sadly, in my opinion, they're going in the wrong direction as the quality of the food and the value just isn't there anymore. read more

Came in for dinner at 5:30pm on a Sunday evening. We made reservations the day before and those are highly recommended, particularly if you want a specific table. It was our first time, so we didn't request anything special. There were two of us and we were seated at a table in the middle of the dining room. We noticed that we were seated in a high traffic area and there was a lot of noise. We noticed a small room at the end of the dining room that was kind of closed off that had an empty table for two. We asked if we could be moved there, but were told that someone else had already reserved that table. Each entree came with choice of soup, salad, and potato. I got the garden salad, chose the chili as my soup, and the twice baked potato. The garden salad was your standard fare (lettuce, cucumber, onion, etc.) and was a good start. The chili was also decent, but again it was a regular everyday chili. We also requested some cooked carrots (an option with the entree), and those arrived for the table. The carrots were tender and sweet. Yummy! The duck was wonderfully cooked, served with some apple slices and a delicious glaze. The service was particularly friendly, as one might expect at a "supper club" style place. The biggest challenge with my experience was the noise level. I had to raise my voice to have a conversation with my wife who was sitting next to me, and I had a hard time hearing her as well. Mind you, my hearing is perfectly fine, having had it tested recently. The issue is the acoustics in the dining room make conversations very difficult. It really ruined my experience. Bottom line is that the food and service are good, but the noise level makes conversation difficult. There are a few tables in the bar area. Perhaps those might have less noise. Anyway, for the noise reason, I don't expect to be back. read more

This place is cute and has a lot of history. We were seated in the basement and at a table that was right next to saloon doors that went into a server station. I don't believe this was a great seat but in general the others looked like it would be a nice experience. We all ordered cocktails and they came out in good time and the drinks were good. A couple brandy old fashioned and a few glasses of wine. We placed our ordered and received soup - I got the stuffed green pepper soup and it was great. The bread they bring to the table is amazing and the salads were good. We had a mix review of dinner. I got the chicken parmigiana and when it came out it looked good but the chicken was very tough. It was a very thick cut (which is not normal for this dish) and it was very rubbery. My husband got the broiled cod and said the actual fish was good but was very under seasoned. He added salt and pepper and said that helped. He enjoyed his french fries. The other two at our table got the fried fish and liked it and the last person got the stuffed flounder and enjoyed that also. All in all I would come back and give it another go. read more

If we weren't with such good company, the evening would have been quite unpleasant. The restaurant was so noisy you wind up just staring at your dining partners because you cannot hear them talking. The restaurant does not make an attempt to add sound buffers like rugs. We sat for about ten minutes before the server approached us and when she discovered that one person was in the rest room, she walked away. Another ten minutes and I finally asked the bus person for a menu. She was shocked no one had given us menus. When the server finally showed up, we ordered the wall eye fish fry. The fish itself was delicious but the coating was soggy and lukewarm. It tasted like it had been in a warming over and not freshly fried. The potato pancakes were the same. They tasted more like hash browns and were not crisp. Instead of giving each person their own cole slaw and tartar sauce, you have to share a small cup with someone else. I must say that the two bus girls were outstanding. They kept an eye on things and except for the fact that they try to clear your plates while you are still eating, they worked hard. The service was amazing and we even got to meet one of the owners as he was sitting in the bar, such a kind soul. Our server was witty and knew her stuff! She recommended great items and everything tasted fabulous. It was quite busy on a saturday night so it was pretty noisy where we were sitting in the bar, but the place is so quaint and adorable. I loved how every entree came with soup salad and most with a side (pasta didn't get a side though). We also got warm fresh bread and it went amazing in our soup. We also got two desserts but I forgot to take a pic- carrot cake and 3 layer chocolate mousse cake. Both fabulous and came with fresh whipped cream. New owners and a new reservation system which is a disaster but the hostess was able to accommodate us when our reservation disappeared even though we had made it only 2 hours earlier. First time at Colony House. Tried to get reservations in past but could never score a good time. Went with another couple on Friday @ 5p. It was nice. Old school supper club at Christmas time which made for a festive ambiance. Twi people had the Fish fry (Cod and Perch). They really liked it. One had the Fried shrimp and also really liked it. I had filet Oscar and it was good, but I ordered Medium and it came medium well to well. I did not send it back as most of it was ok. Appetizers were Fresh oysters and crab cakes which were good. Also, I had the barley soup which was just ok and spinach salad w'/hot bacon dressing which was also ok. Drinks were made very well along with good wine selections. Service was good, no issues. Big menu to select from with a lot of classics. Prices were very reasonable. We stayed and talked for quite awhile w/o being hassled to leave. All in all a great night out and will be back soon to the try Prime Rib and Fried Chicken. read more

If you want to make a friend, then great... do it... Food: ... to be desired. Seriously....Soups started out great (chicken dumpling), but after that it snowballed down from there. Wife had the lamb chops, was not medium rare (more like medium to well done), under seasoned had a funny aftertaste, and the baked potato was... well - hard. How the heck can you screw up a baked potato!?!?? But they did it. I had duck... and it was more than dead. I'd say before it was dispatched, they roasted its ass then put it out of its misery. Honestly, parts of it was crunchy, if you like duck jerky, or never tried it: then you're in for a real treat. Wife's tossed salad had some dirt on the grape tomato, and my Ceasar salad was drowning in a Mayo sauce of some sort. We made reservations for 4 pm, and ended up staying in the basement, it was cold down there,... all the warnings told us to go, but we decided to stick it through... don't know why... but we thought we'd give it a chance anyway. Another suggestion, outside needs some paint work and maintenance...inside, shut the place down, and get a real good top to bottom cleaning. Bathrooms were dirty, and I'm sorry to say this, but it looks like you haven't dusted inside for at least a few months or so... possibly a year.... Yes: Very disappointed, saw all the rants and raves from the reviews here on Yelp. What I realized is that those who highly recommend this place honestly don't know how to cook at home or none at all. They honestly don't know their ass from their elbow... Most here for this place probably clap for joy and squeal about a Denny's Grand Slam Breakfast and giggle happily to themselves for extra syrup on their pancakes, but if you seriously have even the dullest pallet after a hard night of drinking mai tai's , cosmos, and cheap whisky shots, you'll know the damn difference... so... honestly... Keep driving till your gas tank runs dry... fill up and Keep going...till you hit the outskirts of Chicago. Then start looking... Sadly, not as great as I remembered. Still love the historic part of it! The parking was okay - they're in a remote area so there's ample room. The bar was pretty full on a week night but we had a reservation and were seated promptly. Our server was nice but busy with a number of tables. Left mid-order to bring food to another table. The menu has plenty of options and they had a number of specials. I ordered the strip steak and it was pretty fatty and I ended up cutting most of it off, sadly. Also, the mushrooms tasted off. The twice baked potato was small but flavorful. Enjoyed the soup and the bread though. We also went on a 1/2 off bottle of wine night so that was a pleasant surprise. Big surprise at the end was the chocolate cake. The table shared it though we could have all each ordered one for ourselves. Very rich and very good. When I came in and sat at the bar I was greeted as I alway have been here. What do you want and why are you bothering me? Not stated but definitely expressed. Service during dinner at our table was good, food not so much. We had the potato soup which was tasty and had a good chowder base. Both had filets and mine was over cooked. We also added the 15oz lobster tail. It was disappointing to say the least, but our server removed it from the bill. To end the evening we had a dessert which was like a walnut pie with ice cream. That dish is made at the restaurant. It was worth the calories. Coffee was nothing special. Service was worth one of the stars. While writing this review I was asked to move from my table because the next seating was ready to sit. I had my credit card sticking out of the bill bifold waiting for the waitress to pick it up and run my card. read more

We're been here twice and it's become our favorite place for a celebration meals. We've tried the burgers, prime rib, the fish fry, and though they're not on the menu, the onion rings are outstanding. What a complete disaster! Our birthday celebration was awful and ruined!! From being forgotten downstairs and the last ones to leave just after 10p.m. (mind you our reservation was at 7:30)! The waitress was rude, service was beyond slow, with at least 30+ minutes between courses, and people being forgotten when brin ging out courses. The waitress, Mary was unaccomodating, blamed all of her mistakes on new ownership. Food was cold, everyone except 1 in our group was served and then that one was told after the fact, that they were out of the mashed potatoes that she ordered with her dinner 2 hours prior! The lights were turned up full blast by the waitress at the bar looking at bills and she wouldn't dim them when she was done. I'm leaving out so much more! In all of our years going to Colony House we have never, ever had an experience even close to this dumpster fire of a night. There are plenty of places to dine and next month when it is my birthday our group will go elsewhere. read more

My wife took me here for my birthday. The ambiance was good. The steak was boring. But everything else was great.

The new owners have some work to do. Possibly reevaluating the chef or kitchen help. Ordered a signature dish chicken st James. Swimming in sauce and they did not cook the four. Tasted like raw flour. I could not eat it because I didn't want to be sick tonight or tomorrow. Husband ordered lobster scampi and they burned the garlic in the sauce and served it anyhow. The taste of burnt garlic is lasting and they had to know when it was sent out it was burnt. Quality c control is non-existent. 3 out of 8 dinners were bad. Chicken Marsala was awful too. Twice baked potatoes were flavorless and lacked what a true twice baked should have in it. So sad because I used to like it. Also they said they would remove the chicken from the bill and they did not. What a shame read more

We were there in 2010 the first time. Tonight we went back ( we have moved back to the area and I wanted to go back so bad). Anyway the place as changed. Very dark, drab and very loud. Service was very hectic to say the least. We had reservations and our table ( for 2) was not ready when we arrived. But the place was not packed . We ordered our beer and waited 15 minutes. We then ordered our appetizer and main meal at same time.( not my preference but that is what they did) our appetizer came out luckily before our meal . It was OK. Then our main meal came out. Fish should not be cold. Not icy cold but you could tell it was done long before we got served . I ate it because I saw the table next to me waiting for 2 meals that they had sent back and it took them a long time to get them, in fact they just boxed them up after they got them since the rest of their party ate , and I did not want to wait forever. So I ate cold fish. The fries were not cooked, I did not touch them. So I had to base my food on taste. The baked fish was very good. The battered fish, it was pretty bad. Honestly, we could have made the meal we had way cheaper, hotter ( as in temperature) at home but Colony House was on my list to visit again after we moved back to the area.
