Sometimes in Union Grove, you look around and go "I want a chefs creation, but I don't want to drive far". Well excellence at the Red Oak is their specialty. They are farm to table, and you could really taste the quality. Every plate that came out truly was something to look at. We sat at the bar and Lottie whipped up every drink perfectly. Good food albeit very slow. We went here and I liked the menu. They even had a gluten free menu. But I will get to the point - here are my thoughts: Food - great Service - very very slow People - awesome Gluten free? - kind of. But kind of not. The French fries are on the GF menu but they had other things in that fryer that had gluten. My GF burger had fried toppings?!?!! I ended up not getting an entree at all and just watched my wife eat?!?!?!!! So if you order GF here, just be careful. Someone's heart is in the right place but the execution is spotty. It is odd that they give you a speech about the nonnegotiable 20% tip that will be included right when you sit down. It is just an odd start to the experience. You don't even have a water yet and they are explaining the extra fees associated with your meal. So strange. We were all looking at each other as it was explained like "whaaaat?" Whatever. Would I come back? Maybe. The food was good but it came so late we had to woof it down to make the event we were headed to. I ordered a beer and they just forgot about it. Five Stars! My friend and I sat at the bar at Red Oak and had the most amazing experience! From the moment we sat down, our bartender made us feel welcome and taken care of. The service was top-notch--attentive, friendly, and genuinely fun. The drinks were absolutely fabulous--crafted perfectly and super refreshing. I drive past the Red Oak every day while driving to and from work. I never knew this place existed, because it sits off the beaten path. I made it a point that I must try this place, and I finally did. The Red Oak is a "hidden gem," nestled in the Kenosha area countryside. Its farm-to-table theme and culinary delights are created using local ingredients. The menu carries everything from steaks and chops, to seafood. The staff is very professional and friendly. The atmosphere is second to none. Full bar, and great appetizers. The only downside is the prices, but that's expected with the current state the economy. Reservations are suggested. read more

Well, sad to say we were disappointed in our experience last night. The Red Oak had been on of our favorite spots, we even had our wedding reception here. But unfortunately The last couple times we've went we were a bit disappointed, so we held off and haven't been back in almost a year in hopes that maybe they turned things back around. Unfortunately, once again we were not happy and spent over $100 on our meal! The last time we went, both ordered a filet ($50 each mind you, so not cheap!). Both came out well done instead of medium-medium rare as asked. We sent it back and then they came out properly cooked. When you're paying that much, that shouldn't happen! This time around, first off it took a while for anyone to come to the table at all and in between visits, it was a long wait. So the service itself was pretty slow. We ordered a charcuterie board as an appetizer, and were disappointed in this, was missing items that were listed on the menu, and it just seemed like there was not much on there for what it cost! Then for entrees... I had salmon and my husband had a burger. I believe the bun for the burger was from some local bakery shop which was literally crumbling as he ate it, that in itself was a frustrating experience. While we appreciate the fresh bun, it should be able to hold up with the burger! The burger itself was also VERY salty! My salmon was alright, but it too was crazy salty, and the risotto did not have any "Parmesan" flavor whatsoever. I don't know if Chef Josh is still there, but the last couple experiences have not been good. I love the fresh farm to table menu, however, I almost think they're trying to be too fancy, and even so, overly salted proteins, missing items, and crumbling bread, those are basics that shouldn't happen! The food was great, I had Whitefish and my wife had Walleye. We also had the Salmon Bruscheta as an appetizer. Everything was absolutely delicious! The building is very neat and clean, plenty of room between the tables. The only real knock on the Red Oak is that they automatically include a 20% service gratuity to every bill. The service was a bit on the slow side, I am not 100% sure I would've tipped 20%. I certainly would have liked to had the choice. read more

This little restaurant is hard to spot as a business if you are looking for your "restaurant" looking type building. It's looks like a red house, but you walk in and it's anything but. As soon as you enter, you walk in a bar area where you're immediately greeted. I chose the takeout option, but the service was fantastic and the food was delish. The position was standard Midwestern sized but the tastes were anything but. My chicken tarragon risotto was flavor packed, meat juicy and cooked, and packaged in a container that didn't allow for leaks. I also ordered the chocolate tarts (I ate them before I could get a photo) but these 3 tartlets were rich on a tart crust and sitting on a bed of mint. I now crave them! It's moderately priced, even with takeout, you get the vibrant experience through their flavors. I will definitely come back for more Spring flavors. read more

The Red Oak Restaurant is a delicious little gem off the beaten path that's worth the drive! In fact, my bestie and I have deemed it our "go-to" meet up spot for cocktails and brunch, even though it's not quite our halfway point between her IL location and my WI location but halfway points are hit or miss in terms of dining/drink options and this one fares well for both. We first came here right as the pandemic was happening in other parts of the globe but barely making an imprint here in the US (beginning of March, 2020). We came again just last weekend (beginning of November, 2020). I'll give you a run down of both experiences. Let's start with November 2020: -Masks required for entry -Shirts and shoes (and something covering your ass) are still required for entry -Staff are wearing masks and gloves -Social-distance seating (spaced-out seating) both indoors and outdoors -Outdoor patio open also for dining (they also have heat lamps) -Waiting area, bathrooms, and dining experience altered to meet the changing situation amidst a global pandemic -Wash your damn hands! Better than before! Yes, even when you pee! -Staff are always wearing masks. Fellow patrons, the decent thing for us all to do would be to put our masks back on when your hostess or server is approaching the table. I'm sure they don't want our germs either and, while we're dining and drinking out, they are working trying to earn some $ amidst a freaking pandemic. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. Moving on, let's talk about food and drink! They seated us down and brought out a plate of complimentary sliced baked sweet breads, one lemon poppy seed and the other pumpkin praline. Both were absolutely delicious! We were also asked if we wanted water and which kind--one of the options was water infused with rosemary and orange...um, yes, thank you! BTWs, their infused water rotates flavor combos. Here's what I ordered: -The house-made Bloody Mary (I chose a medium-level of spicy) which came with yummy lil fixings to nibble (mushroom, green bean, baby corn, pickle, etc.) -A Bloody Mary Kit to-go ($40) which came with vodka, house-made bloody mary mix and a container of garnishes -The Lamb Burger, which featured Pinn Oak Farm lamb topped with WI goat cheese, candied bacon, red onion and arugula served on a Wild Flour brioche bun. Let me just say, this was more so a 'panic order' because I was taking forever to make a decision (my brain: here comes the server, again...what to get, what to get....ugh, just pick something, your friend's so hungry she's about to eat the menu...OK, order placed...wait, what? When the heck do I eat lamb? Maybe an occasional gyro but, a burger? I hope this is good.). 15 mins later....holy crap, did I hit the jackpot! Seriously, the juiciness of the burger and combo of flavors along with the goat cheese was THE FRICKIN BOMB! -My bestie loves ordering breakfast burritos so she had their Breakfast Burrito with 3 scrambled eggs, sautéed swiss chard, cremini mushroom with hooks white cheddar and garlic aioli wrapped in a spinach tortilla served with roasted potatoes and seasonal veggies. My bestie could seriously NOT STOP GUSHING about how good this breakfast burrito was...weird food noises and all, LOL. March 2020: -Covid wasn't surging in WI and the US quite like it is 8 months later and these were the days when we could sit at the bar learning a million little tidbits of information from a friendly and very knowledgeable bartender...which is exactly what we did! The bar had ample seating, a great chill vibe, and a cute lil atmosphere. Here's what I ordered: -Pre-meal, I ordered hot coffee with Five Farms single-batch Irish-cream liquor which, hands-down blows any of that Bailey's crap right out of the water (PS check your local liquor store - Ray's in Tosa has it, fyi). This was a delish way to start off brunch and accompanied the complimentary sweet breads they give you to nosh on. -Bagel & Lox: toasted bagel, cream cheese, lettuce, Scottish style lox & capers, served w roasted potatoes & seasoned veggies. This dish was so colorful, flavorful, and hit the spot so much so that I almost ordered it again. If you're a fan of lox, give it a try! -Barrel Aged Sazerac with house barrel aged still & oak rye whiskey, Amerique Absinthe Verte, bitters and simple syrup was a great after-meal cocktail. It was liquor-forward (just how I like my cocktails) with great flavor and excellent finish. I have no idea how this place has received 3+ stars. I tried so hard to find something to like about it since its very close to my home. I will say the staff was friendly. First on service - took 20 mins to get cocktails from the bar, mind you there were literally 6 other people in the restaurant. By the time we ordered there were 4 tables with people, a few more in the bar. They server wrote down the wrong table for us so we kept getting food for the table next to us. But really 4 tables in the dinning room and you can't remember who ordered what. Food and Drink. My drink was terrible, how can you have a bar in Wisconsin and not know how to make a brandy old fashion. Bread sticks at the table were good. Meal - soup had rice in it that was undercooked. Tenderloin just OK. Sliders were very good. They add a 20% gratuity under the guise of living wage but I think its mostly because you wouldn't tip otherwise. read more

If you can get past the weird announcement they make at your table about their 20% service charge on your bill, you will enjoy the ambiance. The apple salad I had last night was a balsamic vinegar soaked mess with two pieces of dried out bread, nothing on it, I'm not sure if it was supposed to be garlic or butter or what and not to mention a few pieces of dried out chicken on the top, all in all pretty disappointing. I felt like perhaps there were teenagers in the back cooking and if that's the case, then that is awesome but the business needs to know if they want to stay in business they need more training. As permanent resident of Chicago, my finance and I have spent the majority of the pandemic staying at our lake home in Racine County. Our choice was a no-brainer for maximizing our outdoor space during this time, but were certain our options for great culinary experiences that we were accustomed to in Chicago would be slim to none. This was immediately dispelled by our first visit to The Red Oak. The wait staff, manager, and bartenders provided top-level service, which common throughout Racine County, but the food and cocktails were out of this world. Over 2020, my fiancé visited the Red Oak 10 more times and we fell in love with the vintage bar, extensive cocktail list, rotating menus, staff and quaint yet elegant dining room. We enjoyed our experiences so much that we decided to hold our rehearsal wedding dinner and welcome party at the Red Oak. The manager, Heidi, was extremely easy to work with and accommodating of our needs. Our guests, which were about 150, had an awesome time and could not stop raving about the food, drink list and awesome outdoor space. Some personal favorites are first and foremost the Chicken and Fish and Chips, which are menu staples, but seasonally rotating menus and locally sourced ingredients make for great new options every time. My husband made reservations in advance, as we are from out of town and it was my birthday weekend. We were seated 10 minutes early and it all went downhill from there. First off, it was a hot day and it was just as sweltering inside the restaurant, and water must be a precious commodity because they give you a baby glass of it and do not leave a pitcher at your table. For the love of God, turn on the AC and either provide larger glasses of water or leave a pitcher at the table. I ordered a cup of soup and it arrived in a decent amount of time and tasted fine. The servers tell guests that Red Oak locally sources as much as they can, and that there is an automatic gratuity of 20% added to your bill, instead of tipping, that is distributed among the staff so that all staff are earning a living wage. The gratuity part is nice in theory, but it seemed to mean that no one felt the need to impress to earn what in every other restaurant might be a 20%, or even higher tip. We sat for over an hour after ordering waiting for our entrees. Our server was very apologetic and at one point said our meals would be out in a few minutes, but it was far longer than a few minutes. By the time my tenderloin filet and my husband's beef tip risotto arrived, we were hangry. My tenderloin was delivered cool, not hot, whereas my husband's meal was hot. Our dessert also later took an extremely long time to be produced. So here's the accountability part. Who was supposed to be in charge of the tickets in the kitchen? Why were people that arrived later than us getting their food before us? Why was my food cooked so much earlier than my husband's so that my entrée was cool (and who was at the pass that let my cold dish go out with my husband's hot one)? Why did the table next to us have to return their dishes as well? Why wasn't a manager or owner coming out to explain the problems going on in the kitchen or apologize? A waitress coming out to apologize for the long wait and saying she's never seen the kitchen is such disarray is fine to cover her own butt, but what about the lousy experience, disorganization and poor service by the kitchen as a whole - - that's where an owner or manager should have stepped in, but didn't. read more

The food was absolutely amazing. Never been, will be returning. The food was so tasty, flavorful and hit the spot. Had the brunch menu. Beef tips and Eggs was FIRE. Excellent meal in an unassuming building that we have driven by for a few years thinking it was just a local hole in the wall bar. Boy were we wrong! The inside has been totally remodeled with an upscale country vibe and a huge fireplace. Tables were appropriately space given the current covid recommendations. There appeared to be a patio outside for sitting and having a drink in warmer weather. Very small bar area inside. Local and regional artwork for sale is hanging on the walls. The menu is unique and imaginative. Since the menu concept is farm to table, food is sourced locally. This means the menu will be modified according to what is available in the region and the season. When we inquired the waitress inquired, and came back and offered her a drink or dessert. This was a major dissatisfaction as we had expected a great meal. We had a group of five on a Saturday night. Very nice place, friendly service. The wait for things was quite long. Like and hour and a half from sitting down until dinner arrived. Not sure if they were maybe understaffed. Was not a big deal as we were in no rush. The menu is not huge but has plenty enough to choose from. Prices are up there but this is a gourmet presentation. A few at our table ordered the fillet but all of them were over overcooked by at least one degree above requested. But they still said they were good. I had the roasted chicken over risotto with some sauteed bok choy that was amazing. Loved it. The portions are not overly generous and I could have eaten twice what they brought me. These are more like European sized portions. If you come here really hungry, consider an appetizer and a salad. I would certainly try this place again. read more

We stopped in to try this "farm to table restaurant". A cute converted house to restaurant with a cozy atmosphere providing indoor and outdoor seating. Social distancing was utilized with seating and all staff we saw were wearing masks. Their menu changes ever so often as to provide a variety with the claim of locally sourced produce which could mean a number of things. The fried green tomatoes was okay with a type of sauce that resembled Franks Buffalo Wing sauce. I had the grass feed burger with hand cut fries. The burger was cooked as request topped with cheese and thick bacon. Very tasty. However the fries were not crisp or drained very well after being taken from the fryer. My wife had the chicken breast with risotto and honey glazed carrots. The risotto was over salted and rather bland. All in all not what we expected for the price. There are other local non-chain restaurants with better food and prices. One great thing is that gratuity is included with the meal as to support living wages for the staff. This place is definitely worth trying to say "I've been there", but head south about six miles to the Bristol 45 Diner or west to Salem for better dining. read more

This was our first visit to T.R.O. and it wont be our last. We are pretty tough critics when it comes to going out to eat. Most places get a decent rating from us. This was a true surprise. Let me tell you, from the breadsticks through main course, even the side dishes, were nothing short of exquisite. A culinary delight. I had the fried COD. What would be considered a typical friday night dish "fish nite," right? Wrong! Every aspect of the meal was outstanding. The fish, high quality, tender, not fishy, lightly battered and fried to perfection. The cole-slaw, homeade, melt in your mouth. The tartar sauce was homeade divine. They accompany the plate with a side of homemade applesauce, OMG downright the best tasting applesauce I have ever eaten. Even the fench fries were just drop dead tasty and crunchy. Not one part of their food needed salt or pepper. There were other dishes, like the mushroom / rice soup - out of this world. The shrimp and peach appetizer no words to describe. Can wait to go back and try the ribs, steak and other delights. The ambiance, quiet dining, cloth table coverings and cloth napkins, tethered with great service, made it a meal never to forget. Visiting from out of town. Joining my sister and her soon to be mother in law for dinner at a place they have been before. Reservation for 5 at 7pm. There's about half the tables open. Order drinks and apps within 10-15 minutes of being sat. Place our dinner order by 7:30-7:35. Server is very attentive with asking if we need additional drinks, more water, clearing dirty app plates. We are enjoying our conversation and the server checks in around 8:10 telling us the kitchen is really backed up and our food will be out as soon as it can. More time passes, she comes back again 8:30, apologizing again. Around 8:45 we suggest the manager is made aware. Meanwhile, tables around us have come and gone enjoying their meals. Manager comes to the table to explain the process of how they run the kitchen. I've worked in the industry before so I know how it goes. After questioning why other tables have come and gone while we've been sitting here for over an hour and a half, she grabs kitchen tickets to show when our tickets were sent to the kitchen. According to our ticket, our order was sent to kitchen at 7:50. First of all, this doesn't check with when we verbally placed our order but our server was young so maybe she forgot to place the order right away after leaving the table. Secondly, our food didn't hit our table until after 9:10. That ticket time is 1 hour+!! Food was warm-ish. We had nothing that needed extended cooking time and we understand it's "made to order" but over an hour is not acceptable. Additionally, I think the server was uncomfortable to even come to our table and check on drinks because after the second apology about the kitchen, she didn't return until after our food was dropped off. Not once did a manager approach us to inform us of a kitchen delay before we requested. It is not good customer service to basically just say "sorry but you'll just have to wait until it's out here." We were rightfully frustrated with the delay. They took off the added gratuity (don't get me started about how frustrating it is to see this happening) and 20% additional off the bill to "make it right". Food wise: Beef skewers were ok, very dry. Could have used more sauce. Eggplant and rice: over salted and room temp. Went to this restaurant for the first time with a large group of friends to celebrate a birthday. We brought our own cake which the hostess offered to refrigerate for us. Our waitress proceeded to explain the restaurant policy of automatically putting a 20% gratuity to the bill. She then started to take our drink orders but made it thru half of our 12 people. After bringing half of the drinks, the food order was taken. When the food arrived, the orders were mixed up and it took a while to straighten that out. When our meals were completed we sat for 30 minutes with no waitress asking if we wanted anything else. We had to ask for them to bring the birthday cake we brought to the table. They brought the cake and cake plates. However they didn't bring clean silverware for the cake and they never cleared the dirty dishes from our meals off the table. We scrambled for our forks from our meals. The food, on a whole, was mediocre and served lukewarm. The service did not warrant a 20% gratuity. Plus they charged an extra $1.15 per person for the cake plate with no clean silverware. We had a 5:00p reservation and didn't leave the restaurant until 8:00p. We watched people coming and going, being served promptly with quick food delivery, then leaving while we waited repeatedly, asking for everything. Fresh, delicious farm to table food, rotating seasonal menu, fabulous cocktails and mocktails! Everything was so good - we had the strawberry & Brie crostini and the Wisconsin cheese and meat board for appetizers, and they were so creative. The halibut with peach salsa was incredible- cooked perfectly. Strawberry creme brûlée was unique and tasted like summer. Cozy atmosphere, they accommodated our group of 13 like CHAMPS! After reading the reviews, I have chosen to not go to this establishment for an upcoming event. ANY establishment that feels they need to AUTOMATICALLY add your gratuity instead of the staff earning it is absolutely delusional. Gratuity is earned based on the service provided, not an automatic recompense. Glad I read the reviews before booking. read more

The food was very good and the service was great. Beware and check your receipt closely. Only 2 of us in the party and they automatically added a 20% tip and never said a word. Unfortunately I did not look close enough at the receipt and left a cash tip on top of the already charged tip. I will not be returning. read more

I'm from Houston. Looked for someplace where I could get a steak better than the usual Outback or Texas Roadhouse. I saw the menu on Yelp and decided the 8 mile drive might be worth it. Charming and warm on a cold winter night. I sat at the bar with some regulars in the corner. I was greeted warmly and sat down to a wonderful beer selection, (they even had my favorite wine Prisoner, but only by the bottle). I tried a couple different beers from local breweries and ordered the filet. The steak was juicy, tender and loaded with flavor. When I get back to Wisconsin a return visit is guaranteed. read more
