Unprofessional work, safety hazards, and refused to fix mistakes and stand behind their work--do not recommend. ​I hired Colorado Native Landscapes last year to reduce weeds in my backyard and reset a rock wall and 'refresh' the area. Unfortunately, the project with the owner,Janice Vogt, was plagued by poor practices and unfulfilled promises. ​They removed some established plants without permission and never replaced them. Worse, when they took up my existing flagstone--which had been perfectly stable and safe to walk on for 14 years- to lay a new layer of mulch they proceeded to re lay it directly on top of that loose mulch. When I pointed out how unstable this was, she charged me an extra $2,300 to take it all back up again and pack that mulch properly and put a layer of rock for the flagstone to lay upon. This should have been figured into the original bid. ​Despite the extra fee, the work did not hold up. Now, just less than a year later the stones are shifting, wobbly, and creating severe tripping hazards. As an older homeowner, this is a major safety concern. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I called Janice to come and look at the situation this past month, she did finally agree to come out but then refused to fix it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] In the end she used the excuse that she "doesn't normally use the clients material" (something that she'd NEVER mentioned before) and that my flagstone wasn't good. (In the contract itself it says "Colorado Native Landscaping warranties all hardscape materials and 'workmanship' for a period of two (2) years. They cut corners, didn't solve my weed issue, and left me with a hazardous situation in my back yard, which I will have to pay someone else to remedy. Disgusted. Avoid this company. This is the kind of review I REALLY do not like to do. [[HIGHLIGHT]]To start, I had been emailing with Janice over a few days, and scheduled a meeting at our home build for today, Sunday at 11 AM.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Our email conversation started with making the appointment to meet. Then Janice asked for a survey, so I sent over the plot plan so she could put together a rough plan as she asked for "must haves" which I sent over same day. That was Thursday.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]So now it is Sunday, we are at the house, waiting. As time passes we discussed how long we are going to wait etc. My wife tells me I should email Janice, but I told her she is not going to see it if she is driving. At about 11:20 I called Janice, went straight to VM. I called a minute or so later to leave a message, it rang a few times and then went to VM, so I left a voice mail to find out if she was still on the way, to call back to let me know, and I left my number.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]6 or 7 minutes later, Janice emails me. WTH? Why can't you return my call?! Let me know you are not going to bother to attend a meeting that was scheduled 5 days ago?![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is what I got in return via email, to my phone calls and voice mail: "Sorry for any confusion this morning. Janice demonstrated professionalism and a strong ethical approach throughout the initial stages of our project. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We appreciated her knowledge during the site visit and early design discussions, and the process of signing the initial $1,738.93 design agreement was straightforward.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] However, as the project progressed, we encountered significant challenges. The design provided was quite basic-limited to a 2D, black-and-white format-and did not fully address the complexities of our sloped backyard. After agreeing to an $80,000 project and providing a $28,000 deposit, we were surprised when, the very next day, Janice raised new concerns about the need for additional retaining walls and major changes to the grading plan. [[HIGHLIGHT]]These issues had not been anticipated or discussed in earlier phases, and we think Janice was caught off guard when her subcontractor visited the site.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There was no grading plan included, nor was there a clear intention to consult with an engineer, despite the technical demands of our site. The scope of earthwork required was revised dramatically, from an estimated 20 cubic yards to a possible 120 cubic yards, with the associated costs left undefined. Janice was unable to provide updated cost estimates for these changes, and her contract specifies that any additional expenses resulting from inaccurate estimates are the homeowner's responsibility. [[HIGHLIGHT]]While it was clear that Janice believed she was acting in our best interest, the lack of detailed planning and communication about potential complexities led to considerable frustration.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Based on our experience, her team may be better suited to straightforward projects that do not involve significant engineering or sloped terrain. We would advise future clients to review contracts carefully, verify insurance coverage, and clarify whether the designer will coordinate with city officials, engineers, or other professionals as needed. In our case, all design work was handled solely by Janice, and the limitations of this approach became apparent as the project unfolded. Yet took the design fee, and the $28k deposit for the work, and could not determine, from November '24 to June, '25, that it was not a site they could work on? Then on the start week, decided we needed to Tier the slope of the yard and add an undefined cost and then, after contracts signed, check taken, then, decide to tell us the project as designed was not feasible. She was right - I do not have an unknown, unlimited budget, for work that is not as per the agreed contract. read more

This was one of the best experiences I've had with a contractor since buying my home. My house had ZERO curb appeal or privacy from neighbors and was a boring patch of grass and a lot of weeds. I called several landscape companies, but they either didn't return my call, didn't show up, or were downright sketchy. Janice went to CSU and studied landscape design - and you can tell. Her design was spot-on and she took everything into consideration. She had great questions and reassured me that my 10,000sf lot had a lot of potential. They literally transformed my outdoor space into the best house in the neighborhood! I have a gorgeous, natural, mountain look with siloam steps and paths. They planted beautiful privacy trees, perennials for pollinators, and everything on my plant "wish list." My water feature and endless stream adds a serene, mountain calm to the heart of Arvada. I'm getting on her list for next year to add an outdoor kitchen and pergola. Colorado Native Landscapes and Design ROCKS!!! Janice and her crew did the landscaping for a new-build home back in 2023. From start to finish, we could not have been happier. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Two years in and we LOVE it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]A great experience working with Janice and Colorado Native Landscapes![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was looking for a natural look and did a lot of research for companies that provide this aesthetic - and it turned out perfect. It was a pretty big project with lots of granite boulders, native perennials, evergreens, shrubs and ground covers. They reworked my irrigation system to be much more efficien. The flow is seamless with different areas for firepit, waterfeature, dining and relaxing. This was our first major landscaping project, and we loved working with Janice and the crew! They demoed our patio and built a new herringbone paver patio. They also helped us with a stone walkway and brand new sod. At the beginning, we took a while to settle on the scope of work and budget, and throughout that process, Janice was very understanding and collaborative. I had reached out to her in January so we could begin discussion on converting our entire front lawn and back side yard to a drought tolerant space. she worked on design and took our feedback to make adjustments as well as listened to our budget. We had also worked with Resource Central through the city of Westminster and the conservation options they were offering and she was able to meet the timelines we had set up with them.
