The Tree Planting Disaster One of the first major problems we encountered was with the landscaping aspect--specifically the planting of trees. Out of the nine trees planted, six died within a relatively short time frame. We had been informed that these trees were under warranty for a year, which gave us some initial reassurance. Unfortunately, when we sought replacements for the dead trees under this warranty, the company did not honor their commitment. This was deeply frustrating and marked the beginning of a series of disappointments in dealing with Land Designs by Colton. Contract Issues Another frustration arose when we attempted to obtain a copy of our contract. We had initially accessed the agreement through Google Docs, but it was mysteriously deleted. When we reached out to Land Designs by Colton for a copy, they claimed they could no longer provide it due to changes in their system following an update. This lack of accountability and transparency added to our growing unease with the company. The Deck Extension Debacle The most costly and distressing issue was related to a deck extension they built for us. After the work was completed, we discovered that the extension had not been permitted--they assured us that this was not necessary. As we began the process of obtaining necessary permits, we learned that the construction itself was not done to code. Specific deficiencies included: * Footings that were not deep enough * Railing spindles with uneven spacing * Stairs that failed to meet code requirements These violations have forced us to reconstruct the deck to meet code standards, incurring additional expenses totaling thousands of dollars. In essence, the deck project has doubled in cost due to their negligence. This has been an incredibly stressful ordeal, both financially and emotionally. Conclusion Our experience with Land Designs by Colton has been nothing short of disastrous. What began as a promising relationship quickly deteriorated due to unfulfilled warranties, lack of transparency regarding contracts, and substandard construction practices that led to code violations. I paid him half up front and he did some work. When I needed him to return to finish the lawn after the fence was installed, he strung me along on a finish date for months. I tried to press him to finish the job, and he got nasty. I'd often get trapped in circular conversations with his assistant, who hides behind legalese language, while Jonathan's correspondence was filled with condescension, personal attacks, and threats. (As an example: See below his assistant's response as evidence of the kind of legal speak they use, and how they twist it around in their favor. Pegging blame on the customer without accepting responsibility for their own awful service.) And they're thugs. I had to file a police report after he and his workers broke into our backyard _and garage_ to reclaim what he says are his materials. Some $10 pipes. This is something they'll point to in the contract as a thing he has a right to do. Upon terminating his contract for stringing me along, severe unprofessional behavior, and even violating our safety and security, he charged a termination fee. This would be laughable if it weren't so vindictive. Despite it all, I did pay him whatever ridiculous invoice he'd excuse with his contract in order to get rid of all the vitriol he was turning my way. So... Be wary of his, and his assistant's, predatory contract which they rely on to get away with crappy service. You'll know he deems your project to not be lucrative for him, when he gives you side comments about him "doing you a favor." He lacks follow through to complete a job unless it's on his terms, and he lacks professionalism in dealing with client requests. He gets nasty and personal if you get on his bad side. He loves to tout his educational background, as if to reassure you he's somehow different or that you'd be getting excellent service. Don't fall for it. There are plenty of other contractors in the Denver area who do amazing work in a timely fashion without all the drama. Save yourselves the headache.

Fantastic Customer Service (Thanks Maya!)…read more I don't even have my actual service scheduled until next week so I'll try to remember to update then, but I just had to post this right after my first phone call. I called to schedule a general yard cleanup and spoke with Maya. She gave me very straightforward pricing, told me what to expect, and asked all the right questions about my needs. She was so knowledgeble that I kept her on the phone for quite a while, asking her details about various potential projects such as gravel, sod and sprinkler system installation (they do all of these). She gave me an overview of what each of these projects entailed, the general time/maintenance/cost involved, and was super patient answering all my questions thoroughly without ever trying to "sell" me anything. It was so refreshing to have a dedicated, knowledgeable human pick up on my first call and answer all my questions right away; Versus other places where it's usually someone who is either (1) only trained to schedule and sell services without any deeper understanding of the business; or (2) a busy foreman in a rush to their next site with no time for questions. Not their fault, just makes it a little tougher to know what you're getting. Assuming the quality of their work match that of their customer service I will be using them for future projects for sure!

He was also very communicative about getting our project scheduled (BONUS: he was able to get us started sooner than originally planned). His crew is some of the nicest people too. My son was running a fever for the few days they were working on our yard and they asked about how he was doing each day (one gentleman even asked if he could pray over him which was so unexpected and nice). They are considerate of your space. At the end of each work day, they sweep up and consolidate their tools to one area so it doesn't feel like you're in a construction zone. The finished product is very polished and well done. When there were things I wanted adjusted or trimmed a little bit more, Josh was very agreeable and happy to oblige. And yes, I was that high maintenance client who had a request to add more flagstone AFTER they were done and they were so great to get a team out the next day to make that little addition. And how often does a project come in under budget?? Was nice to see that they are very precise in what they do. After the project is done, Josh takes measurements of the actual work and adjusts to actuals which made our project come in a little under budget (yay!). I would happily work with them again!

HIs team of landscapers were early, worked hard during sun and rain, and they took time to clean the sidewalks and streets every night before leaving. The estimate was well written and Joshua kept us up-to-date every day on the progress. We had old grass removed, and old cottonwood tree and roots removed, rocks cleaned and weed barrier replaced, bushes replaced, sprinklers replaced and metal edging added. The final product was better then we could have imagined. Denver Tree and Landscape is an outstanding business because of Joshua and his great team of employees. Our email conversation started with making the appointment to meet. Then Janice asked for a survey, so I sent over the plot plan so she could put together a rough plan as she asked for "must haves" which I sent over same day. That was Thursday. So now it is Sunday, we are at the house, waiting. As time passes we discussed how long we are going to wait etc. My wife tells me I should email Janice, but I told her she is not going to see it if she is driving. At about 11:20 I called Janice, went straight to VM. I called a minute or so later to leave a message, it rang a few times and then went to VM, so I left a voice mail to find out if she was still on the way, to call back to let me know, and I left my number. 6 or 7 minutes later, Janice emails me. WTH? Why can't you return my call?! Let me know you are not going to bother to attend a meeting that was scheduled 5 days ago?! This is what I got in return via email, to my phone calls and voice mail: "Sorry for any confusion this morning. I was going to work on the estimate and concept before we met to make sure my print is in line with your budget." Needless to say, Janice, I will not be calling or emailing you again...

Unfortunately, the project with the owner,Janice Vogt, was plagued by poor practices and unfulfilled promises. ​They removed some established plants without permission and never replaced them. Worse, when they took up my existing flagstone--which had been perfectly stable and safe to walk on for 14 years- to lay a new layer of mulch they proceeded to re lay it directly on top of that loose mulch. When I pointed out how unstable this was, she charged me an extra $2,300 to take it all back up again and pack that mulch properly and put a layer of rock for the flagstone to lay upon. This should have been figured into the original bid. ​Despite the extra fee, the work did not hold up. Now, just less than a year later the stones are shifting, wobbly, and creating severe tripping hazards. As an older homeowner, this is a major safety concern. When I called Janice to come and look at the situation this past month, she did finally agree to come out but then refused to fix it. In the end she used the excuse that she "doesn't normally use the clients material" (something that she'd NEVER mentioned before) and that my flagstone wasn't good. (In the contract itself it says "Colorado Native Landscaping warranties all hardscape materials and 'workmanship' for a period of two (2) years. They cut corners, didn't solve my weed issue, and left me with a hazardous situation in my back yard, which I will have to pay someone else to remedy. Disgusted. Avoid this company. He has stayed in touch throughout our summer of 100+ degree days to ensure that our plants and flowers are staying alive. Al and his crew did an incredible job removing all of the grass, leveling out the ground and cutting all of the pavers to fit the space.
