I've been training at the Greenwood Village location of Z-Ultimate since 2016 and for another year…read moreand a half with Sensei Kristen at the Highlands Ranch studio before that. I had never done any martial arts before coming to Z-Ultimate, and I'm so happy that I made the decision to start! While there are plenty of kids who train here (and from what I can see they have a great time), I can really only speak to the experience of being an adult student. The teachers start from the very beginning, so that if you know literally nothing about martial arts (like me!), you will be comfortable. I have a weekly 30-minute "private lesson" in a small group (sometimes just me and a teacher, usually with 1-3 fellow students), which is where I learn most of my new material. There are also several group classes each week that I can go to or not as my own schedule permits, typically with between 6 and 16 students of a variety of belt ranks. The individual lessons teach how to do basics (punches, kicks, blocks), defensive techniques aka DTs (short sequences of moves to ward off attacks) and forms (longer sequences of choreographed moves). These are the elements that are ultimately tested when students are ready to move to the next belt rank. Group classes consist of calisthenics to get started, followed by a rotating variety of activities. Sometimes we focus on polishing and applying what we learn in private lessons (DTs and forms). Sometimes we learn unusual moves such as escaping from grabs or learning how to deal with an attacker with a club (using a foam "club") for safety. Sometimes we practice sparring with the other students. These are hour-long classes that tend to be excellent exercise! Learning martial arts is not a cheap way to get exercise. I think the standard arrangement is to pay a monthly subscription, which gets you your weekly private lesson and as many group classes as you want to attend. There are sometimes options to pre pay a yearly package to get a discount. Some things cost extra, like paying for your next belt test, buying sparring gear, signing up for tournaments, weapons training, or special extra classes with guest instructors. But I pretty much get what I'm looking for with just the standard lesson package and belt tests as they come up. I think that the cost is similar to a gym membership. For me, Z-Ultimate is my gym! I'm definitely in much better shape now, with much more physical confidence. I like the instructors and the other students. I guess that's obvious since I've been training here for years!

All while helping you, be a better you! The personalized instruction has been invaluable to me. As a person with disabilities, they help me perform what most people would think would be impossible for me to do. Doing so requires help from my instructors, to get the most our of my classes by finding ways for me, to accomplish the task at hand, albeit, sometimes a little differently. Something you don't get everywhere else. I also train with my youngest son here. Watching him grow as a person with martial arts in his life, bringing him discipline, patience, and an understanding that you never loose unless you quit, brings me enormous piece of mind.

Up until about 3 1/2 months ago, I thought it was the best dojo in the world, because it really was great. Sensei Kaz was dedicated, kind, disciplined, fun but strict when needed. He was the best instuctor you could possibly ask for. About 3 1/2-4ish months ago, right before a tournament, the masters stripped him of his position at the dojo. They moved him away and stripped one of his belt ranks and replaced him with Master Clark's daughter. They did this with no explanation to the parents or the students and when asked they said that Sensei Kaz was doing "advanced training" at the Northgate dojo, but it has been over 3 months and he still is not back. I thought that would be the end of it, but it wasn't. At the tournament, I saw Sensei Kaz looking worse than I had ever seen him, sad, lonely, and missing a belt rank and his instructors uniform. For no reason whatsoever, he was stripped of his certification, his dojo, and a belt rank. To add insult to injury, Sensei Hannah, the woman who took over for Sensei Kaz, made multiple changes to the dojo, disrupting students routine. She canceled the demonstration team at the dojo, she canceled the instructor program where students get to shadow and learn the process of being an instructor, she combined the teens and adults classes on Saturday, and she completely changed the class structure. Not only that, but she also made multiple price increases. Needless to say, I am switching dojo's and would no longer recommend Z. It used to be a great dojo, but now it has turned into a money farm and a belt factory. They used to prioritize students, now they prioritize a quick buck and it all changed in a week, surely shows how much they care about the well-being of their students. If you value proper training, useable skills, and earning your belts, I do not recommend. If you want to pay an arm and a leg for basic training plus an extra fee for belt tests just so that you can be pumped through with everyone else to increase another persons profit, then go right ahead and sign up. So sad to say this because Z really was the best part of my life for so long, but none of the instructors at that dojo care anymore, the only of who gave a crap about the students was Sensei Kaz and he was removed for just that. If you do choose to sign a contract with Z, good luck. By the way, Sensei Hannah is not the problem, she is actually verry nice, a little annoying with the amount of times she calls about minute things, but nice. It's the way the dojo in general is treating people, including their long standing instructors.
