Colossal dissapointment! Got a table in about 15 minutes, but waited over an hour for our food. We were hoping that the food would be worth the wait. It was not. The bacon was over cooked and under cooked, hash browns were tasteless, and the apple walnut Brie flap jacks were very dry. Colossal waste of time! So very disappointed. Tried the new location on Grand in Saint Paul. I heard the others were good, but this one is not run well. It needs serious help! The hostess was very polite and asked if we wanted coffee while we wait. Nice touch! Only had to wait ten minutes to be seated, staff seemed very friendly, ambiance was so so. This is where it all dropped off. Service was soooooo slow. Ridiculously slow. Two hours to eat lunch. Unacceptable! Food was mostly good, but didn't come out of the kitchen at the same time for our table. Veggie burger was burnt. Salad was great. Bacon super over cooked, but we like it that way actually. Our waitress was unapologetic for the wait to order and amount of time for food to arrive. It took twenty minutes to order and food took almost forty minutes. I regret leaving her 10% tip. Also, for the sake of your customer's health, Collosal managers, please take note: who in this day and age pours water from a pitcher and touches the mouth/rim of each glass???? Train your employees! I watched as our waitress did this around the restaurant. No no! Disease! Unfortunately we had a view into the kitchen and could see as she kept scratching her head and plating up food. Nasty! Basic food service sanitation! The ceiling was leaking on the floor next to our table. Ew. I'm sure I seem like a complainer, but this is my first Yelp review ever. I just had to share this unsatisfactory experience. I hope they improve food times, get training for this unsanitary slow worker, and fix their leaky ceiling! I went there the first Saturday it was open. It did seem a little chaotic. Food took a while but was not bad. The frittata was not bad. Not to mention they were plentiful. I would go back to try something else. But I think overall it was just another experience. Nothing too crazy. read more

As a server, I realize I am overly critical of my serving experience and usually let it go and chalk it up to a bad day. However, when you get crappy service and crappy food it usually is more than just a bad day. From the start, our server Carter was less than enthused to be at work, and even less enthused to be serving our table. Had to ask for coffee refills, more cream, and finally she just stopped coming to our table and someone else dropped off our food, refilled our coffee, took our plates. She came back when we needed our check and promptly took pens out of her hair for us to sign our slips with. Didn't ask how to food was - which I would've replied the Strawberry Nutella french toast special of the day was incredibly dry, even with the syrup I had to ask for. She also just dropped off our slips and cards and left, no 'thank you' or anything. Maybe drop the attitude and provide better customer service. This location has some good things and some bad things, but when all the bad things combine - not a great experience. Probably will continue to make the St. Anthony location my spot instead of this one. read more

Good quality ingredients and lovely preparation. Breakfast specials are inventive and tasty. However I can't give it above 3 stars because it is a breakfast-focused restaurant without a toaster. Why serve such lovely bread and then make it taste like a greasy grill? Two times I've asked specifically for real toast but have been told it is impossible. Very disappointing. read more

We have been to Colossal many times before and loved it. We went this last weekend and it was TERRIBLE! We will not be back! Called and made a reservation for 9 for Mother's Day Brunch. Spoke with Rene and he set it up for 12:00N, but mentioned we might want to check in a bit early, incase the large party before us finished up early. We talked about menu and parking. We drove 30 miles, arrived about 11:45AM, and were informed this restaurant does not take reservations. I told them I had talked to Rene - they said is was not in, and there was nothing they could do but add us to the list and wait 40 minutes. read more

2 things we liked: biscuits and the tuna melts. 2 things we didn't like was the wait and waiting forever!!!! tThis is the tiniest breakfast place that's doing well I've ever seen ..buy the store next to you if you want to be stay in business. I love this place. Generally there is about 30 minutes wait on Saturdays. But I think it is worth it. So far I have tried 3 different things from the menu and I am happy with all of them. I wish I could go there every Saturday. read more

I'm impressed. My niece had told me that this was her favorite breakfast place and that if I go, that I have to try the pancakes. Her words, "they are to die for." I am not a pancake person, so I ordered the classic Colossal breakfast with one pancake on the side. After taking a bite of the pancake, I had wished that I were more brave and just simply ordered only the pancakes. They are delicious and unique. I will certainly never make that mistake again and will order just the pancakes in the future. The atmosphere was busy, but comfortable. The staff was attentive and engaging. Went for brunch with a few friends because I'd had a great experience previously at the Como location. Had to wait 45 min for a table, but that was expected and fine by us. However, we also had to wait 45 min for our food and when we got it it was barely lukewarm. They were very busy, but our server and a number of others were taking new orders and filling water glasses rather than bringing our food, which I could see ready in the kitchen for at least 10 min. We were so hungry that we started eating it anyway while we waited to flag down our server--we certainly weren't about to wait another 45 min for them to make us new plates. When the manager came to talk to us, she was patronizing. "Well I see you've eaten most of it [not true], so what do you want me to do?" she said. We managed to get them to begrudgingly bring us some free pastries. Over all, the food would have been good if it was hot, and I normally wouldn't be so upset about it being cold on such a busy day, but they were rude to us when we politely voiced our complaint and were reluctant to try to remedy it. read more

I'm giving colossal café a 1/5 today for service. I decided to take my girlfriend to my favorite breakfast spot, but the day was ruined after she found a hair in her food. We stopped a lady who wasn't our server but actually the owner who asked very bluntly if my girlfriend wanted a new meal or if we wanted to take it off the tab. She didn't apologize or anything, which was very off-putting. Our server later stopped by and didn't acknowledge what had happened or apologize until we mentioned that it was a little unprofessional the way the first lady had handled our situation. We left immediately after our conversation and thanked her because she was actually pretty good. We saw the Manager/Owner on our way out and thanked her and said goodbye but she just half-smiled and said nothing. This used to be my favorite breakfast spot but not anymore. Both my girlfriend and I are in the restaurant industry and we know good/bad service when we see it. I actually never feel the need to write reviews ever but the 1/5 overall experience compelled me to do so. read more

I love the food at Colossal, so much so that we have put up with their often slow and curt service, but our last experience there really solidified that we will not go back. A couple times now they have been off by 30-45 minutes on how long it will take to get a table, which is tough when you have a hungry toddler and are trying to gauge whether to stick around for a table or not (30 minutes waiting for a table is very different than an hour waiting, and this last time again we were told 30 minutes for a table, and we ended up waiting 75 minutes). We also realized that parties of our same size were getting seated before us even though we came before them on the list, as it seems as if they try to put all parties with small kids in one small back section and they waited until something opened up back there. They are also very slow on the table service, and this last time, never came by to fill up coffee, and when we asked for water, they didn't bring it to us until after the check came, and the water came with a lot of sass from the wait staff. We were very excited for this restaurant to open in the neighborhood. Scratch made food, local restaurant, great reputation. The food is great. BUT the service is SLOW. SO SLOW. I have been there 4 times. On busy Saturday mornings, Sunday morning and a weekday morning, with children, with girlfriends, with husband. Full, empty, doesn't matter. The service is slow. The servers are all very nice (except 1), but slow. I have been tempted to pour my own coffee on more than one occasion. I understand it can get very busy, but waiting 15 min for a cup of coffee or 30 min for your pastry is not ok. Biscuits are amazing. Love the egg sandwiches. Didn't like the flappers- too thick for me. The cinnamon rolls are really just too big and overwhelming. My boys didn't even like them. The apple cinnamon croissant was delicious! If you love good food and have patience for slow service, come here. I think 4 chances is enough. There are other great breakfast places in the neighborhood. read more
