I put a request for a consultation on his website. It took him 4 days to respond. OK, no big deal. On Friday, April 19th, he calls me, we arrange for a meeting that day for him to review the job. I asked him if 3:00 PM was convenient as I wanted my wife to meet him and discuss the scope of the project. He confirms 3:00 was fine, and mentions that he lives in Columbia, so it was not an inconvenience. 3:00 nothing, 3:30 nothing, 4:00 nothing, 4:30 I call his number...no answer. NO CALL, NO SHOW, NO NOTHING. What makes it even more frustrating is he was referred by a really good friend of mine, whose opinion I value highly. I cannot recommend David and his crew highly enough. The bottom third of our walkway was completely cracked through when we moved in, with a broken, badly done DIY patch from some previous owner. I initially called looking for a quotes on a repair, but David gave me some straight talk about the repairs I was asking for and explained the reasons those repairs would not last long term. I googled around and verified that what I was originally asking for was indeed actually a shoddy patch job. After getting updated quotes from other vendors, I realized that not only was Dave's quote competitive but that he had also proven himself honest I would rather have a contractor who was willing to do things right the first time. I'm so glad we did. Dave and his crew were respectful, efficient, and (based on the learning I did in between) following best practices to make sure the job was done well. He was also incredibly kind with my kids, who were oogling through the window at his and his crew's work. They went above and beyond the job I expected of them, including fixing the concrete when-- unbeknownst to me-- my excited toddler ran out right as they were cleaning up and messed up their fresh concrete job (ack!). They cleaned my little man, and repaired the damage at no extra charge, bless them. These are people I respect, who do excellent work, and would hire again in an instant. read more

So I had a little leak in my foundation. I dug out around the leak location and after thinking about how to fix it, I called Columbia Concrete. I spoke with the owner who listened to my issue and provided logical guidance on the proper was to solve my issue. Turned out I was able to do it myself as he suggested which only cast about 100 dollars. At a time when I wasn't sure what to do, I appreciated the honesty and the reassurance. But I mostly appreciated the fact that they didn't use this as an opportunity to take advantage of someone. If I ever need real concrete work done, Columbia Concrete will be my first call. read more

Our experience with Dave Bell and his guys has been quite pleasant. They did several jobs for us to include: 1. Replacing and widening our driveway 2. Replacing the existing paver patio with bluestone and adding a wall 3. Building a fire pit 4. Forming a slab where we could sit our log holder Dave was responsive, professional, and personable throughout the process. He offered suggestions and solutions for us to accomplish our vision. There were ideas that we had that sounded good in our minds but Dave was quick to point out either better looking options that were actually more cost efficient or letting know that maybe we could explore different options to still have a beautiful final product, but not break the bank. Our driveway was relatively straightforward in terms of design and expansion. We received very little cooperation from Mother Nature which caused unplanned delays, but that was obviously no fault of Dave and his crew. Dave walked us through our concrete options and we went with a straightforward pour without aggregate stone. As long as weather wasn't a factor, Dave and/or his crew were there as planned and they worked incredibly hard. His guys were pleasant and professional, even offering to help me move a few items that were certainly not in the scope of their work order. Our patio was more involved in terms of discussion. Dave walked us through all options available to us. Gave us pros and cons of each. We wound up going with bluestone and boy were we happy with the final product! We were interested in having a wall built into patio and Dave was able to incorporate that beautifully. After seeing how the patio was coming along, we decided we wanted to move forward with a matching fire pit. Logistically, Dave accurately pointed out that we wouldn't be able to have matching stones and caps with a circular pit. However, he asked if we were interested in a square pit. We hadn't considered it, but he showed us some pictures of previous jobs and we agreed to move forward with it. Again, the only delays were due to rainy weather, and not Dave or his crew. Lastly, he poured a form for us to sit our log holder on and it turned out really well. We're very happy with the work that was done and would certainly utilize his services again in the future. We were very satisfied with the work Dave and his crew did in expanding our driveway. I initially called Dave just to gather some information about the process of expanding our driveway. He was very helpful and honest with me about the entire process especially since I had to work with HOA. Dave made a suggestion to replace the walkway leading up to the house. This was a great suggestion as it would have cost us more to have that replaced in the future for just the walkway. All of our questions were answered promptly throughout the process. Columbia concrete replaced my driveway a number of years ago and did an excellent job. Recently I had some work done by a tree company and their truck broke a section of the driveway. Due to the scoring that Columbia Concrete did on the original pour, the cracks stopped in the one section. Columbia concrete replaced the cracked Section and I am very pleased with the work they did. After the concrete dried, the crew removed the forms, replanted some plants that had been moved during the pour, and cleaned up. I am very satisfied with their work and would recommend them and use them again in a heart beat. read more

Our experience was extremely poor and I would avoid working with this company at all costs. If you hire this company, be prepared for lots of sweet talk and promises but with ultimate work that is poor and an owner who will not stand by it in any way shape or form. He agreed to raise and seal some concrete steps outside out home. We waited and waited and waited for the original work to begin and kept calling and calling and checking in to no avail. Finally, after about two months of waiting, he called and asked if he could come the next day. We agreed and a team of three men were out with David Bell supervising. I was relieved and excited because of all the good reviews. However, I was quickly disappointed. The steps were raised, although they were not completely level. I was ready to accept the steps not being completely 100% level and wasn't going to even say anything about that. However, the caulking job was really, really bad. Awful. Messy, uneven. Caulk all over the place like they had been painting with their fingers. I was already concerned, but then about two days later and after one rain, the caulk basically disappeared in spots and there were gaping holes EVERYWHERE. The interior of my house was left to the elements even worse than it had been before they raised and sealed the steps originally. I called Mr. David Bell out to look and he was originally clearly very offended that something could be wrong. He wanted his money. I was actually kind of embarrassed for Mr. Bell and nervous to show him because of how badly it looked and how the holes were gaping everywhere. However when he saw the work, he agreed it was awful and called it that much as well as a "s*it job." His exact words were "My guys did that?!" He agreed to personally come back and do the caulking himself. However, we did not see Mr. Bell for about THREE weeks. Meanwhile, we experienced a strong rainstorm and water poured into my house and flooded the basement to the extent that water was seeping through the walls in our half bathroom. I called Mr. Bell and informed him that we needed him out immediately to fix the caulking that he had left to the elements and his only response was basically "oops, sorry, besides, your house had already been receiving water for years." We had never, ever had water seeping through out walls this way. We had only had only had visible water damage like this when Mr. Bell left our home foundation completely open and unsealed for 3 weeks. Strangely enough, Mr. Bell acknowledged that the house was very much unsealed and that he left it that way. (Why on earth would you ever leave someone's home foundation unsealed and open to the elements for 3 weeks?!) The icing on the cake is when he finally came out to fix the caulking and I told him I wanted to wait a little while to see how this caulking would take before we finally gave him the full payment. I would give him 75% now and the remaining 25% once I could confirm that there would be no further holes. He basically had a full- on tantrum. I won't get into the details, but it was ugly. He kept pushing back that I needed to pay him 100% immediately as regardless of what would happen, he would stand by his work and fix whatever needed to be fixed. I insisted on paying only 75% and gave him partial payment. I was nervous that we would have rain and would have holes once again. He re-did the caulking, and what do ya know, after a single rain storm, the caulking cracked the entire way across the steps. Holes once again and my home foundation is open to the elements and rain, once again. I called him back out and we had a heated exchange. I have never been spoken to so poorly by someone I am supposed to be doing business with and by someone where THEIR work has been the issue and I am just trying to get it fixed once and for all! Ultimately he agreed that the caulking needed to be re-done and that maybe it was bad caulking and he needed to use a different kind. He promised to come back to our home withing a few days. That was October. It is now December, and despite repeated email inquiries, there has been no no sight of Mr. Bell. He took the partial payment and ran. He also refuses to send us a receipt for the partial cash payment (75%) we gave him. He does not perform quality work and he does not stand by it. Further, expect to be yelled at, and belittled and if you dare bring up a quality issue and try to get it resolved. Because Mr. Bell just wants his money and that's it. and he told me that much many times -- "I just want to get paid". Whether the work is done well, or right., that doesn't quite matter. I am considering a formal complaint with the BBB. read more

Columbia Concrete has completed 2 jobs for us. The first was 8 years ago and was a retaining wall. 8 years later is looks great! Because we were so pleased we contacted the same company again. This job was a "planter box" 9 feet by 30 feet (hardly a box) with a 2 foot high stone retaining wall all the way around. It is now the highlight of our back yard and looks beautiful!! We couldn't have been more pleased with the owner and his workers. They were polite and came every day until the job was finished. I now have another vision -hubby is going to kill me :-) I want to extend our current driveway for more parking and turning. When I get the "green light" from my husband I will be contacting Columbia Concrete to do the job!! read more
